Walmart sponsored 'Welcome to the Football Club' segment featuring listener story and extended Walmart plug for football weekend shopping
"The listeners, this is welcome to the football club, look out Robyn Ryan, because we have teamed up to build a club with our friends at Walmart. Our club celebrates football fans across this beautiful nation. All of you listeners can send your stories in this week. We welcome Amanda Jane and Lily from the Magnificent City of Portland, Oregon. Roar, do the honors. My name is Amanda Jane. Not mine. And my daughter, Lily and I, have loved tuning into the World Cup every four years since she was a kid. But this year's was the first World Cup that has happened since Lily moved out. Now she has young kids of her own, and I honestly wasn't sure if we'd watch this World Cup together in the same way we had in the past. Thankfully, perhaps because it all went down in America, it captured her interest. In fact, I think we watched more games together than ever before and felt completely in love, which is actually my experience of watching the World Cup with Raj. Is that why you want him to read this one? Well, I know. It's really about, it's a thinly veiled allegory. Is this to you, right? This is much better. Well, am I Amanda Jane? I don't know. Are you Amanda Jane? I don't. Rory Lily? Am I the only one? Maybe. A bit of Amanda Jane and all of us. Roar, keep going. As the tournament near the end, I realised with sadness that without it, I would lose this new tune-etching and quality time shared with my daughter. Imagine my delight then when Lily asked if we should find a Premier League team to support. We started to search. I've got a sinking feeling. We didn't want a team that would be winning all of the time. Yep, I know where this is going. We'd like to experience all of the emotions in the end. No lesser character than Jordan Pitford, Red Flag, won our hearts. So to cut a long story short, we are now fanatical evertonians. I don't want to editorialise this is a terrible way of keeping in touch with your children. The Toffees give us everything we were looking for. The highs, the horrors, the nail biting. I get to spend all weekend in anticipation of how, of wondering how we are going to lose this weekend. Most importantly, now we watch every game together. I'm sleeping over at her house, so we do watch the game. It ain't its whole this weekend. Everton has helped change our relationship in such a positive way. Each week, I looked around the room at my daughter and her small kids and seen not only three generations of football fans, but the thousands of hours that football will bring us together with regularity and the realisation that it's less about the football it has to be with Everton. And more about the joy of this game, making us a bigger part of one another's lives. I can't describe to you how thankful I am for the World Cup, for the English Premier League, for bringing us together even more, and yes, even the Toffees. There's then a four letter acronym which I refuse to read. UTFT. Yeah, UTFT and I don't like it. It's a beautiful letter. Everton's bringing generations together through shared trauma. I admire the sentiment, but I just think it's a terrible choice. Do you, I admire F2C, is someone who is a very plastic Liverpool fan. I am someone who has that perspective of I came to support a team that I didn't have any connection to other than just, they mean, we feel nice and might tell me when I watch them. I think to pick a team like Everton, where the best you've got to look forward to is getting a 1-1 draw away at Anfield instead of... Right, you're on like, you've won the Champions League. There's something very... There's something noble about that. That's the purity. That's the magic of football. And I admire that. I love Walmart, Best Mart, since I'm a derogate. No store helps. A football fan stock up on everything you need. For the football weekend at Walmart, I've got to say, I look forward to my weekly haul from there before the games, the snacks, the coffee, the pies, even the anti-assids for when the top is approach full-time. You get it all from the aisles, or via Walmart's Express delivery directly to your home, following the greatest of wins and the worst losses. If you like Amanda Jane and Lily, fell deeply in love with football during the World Cup. Send us your story. We want to hear it. We'll read the best ones out via manyblazersatgmail.com. Each winner will be sent a special custom. We're making them now, sewing them half and half scarf, celebrating your connection to each other. Amanda Jane and Lily, it's beautiful. Ah, to the sport, and to us at MIT. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And God bless you, big Walmart. Moving right along to one last big thing,"
