Toy Story 5

2026-08-02 04:00:00 • 2:33:10

-

I don't know, Jesse.

0:23

I mean, Toys are for play, but podcasts.

0:27

Toys are for everything.

0:28

I have to say, I don't like that line, but it's the closest thing to a line in the trailer.

0:34

It feels like a trailer line.

0:35

It's a real trailer.

0:36

It feels like a sort of mission statement line.

0:37

It's a mission statement line.

0:38

Now, here's what I want to say.

0:40

And I felt like I had to open the code.

0:42

He's saying tech is for everything, right?

0:44

Yes.

0:45

Here's what I want to say to open the episode.

0:48

Toy Story in five.

0:49

Oh, we did it.

0:52

Oh, the sigh emanating from a re-barnisling.

0:55

Toy Story in five.

1:00

He's referencing the Nick's pen.

1:02

I got it.

1:03

The Toy Story won the movie franchise championship in only five entries.

1:08

Marie, why so sad?

1:11

I just want to say that Woody wears cowboy boots with spurs on them.

1:17

Oh, so you're saying he's a San Antonio fan?

1:20

Yes he is.

1:21

I'm all I'm saying is that Toy Story won.

1:24

That's all I'm saying.

1:25

That's what that Toy Story, the first movie.

1:26

I'm saying that Toy Story won the championship.

1:28

It didn't just to be clear, but it's interesting that you're saying that

1:30

because you're saying there's a movie franchise champion.

1:33

Ben and I have talked about this like what would we have seen in this movie?

1:36

And it's like what would we have seen in this movie?

1:37

Is there a more consistent five movie run?

1:40

I would argue mission impossible.

1:43

I know people don't.

1:44

But he's going to exclude it because it has more than five.

1:47

No, I know.

1:48

No, because what would you call the five run?

1:52

One, three, five.

1:54

Like I love two.

1:55

I'm sorry, I know people don't like you.

1:57

What about them?

1:58

What about four through eight though?

2:00

Like you kind of go like the true.

2:01

Right.

2:02

Right now.

2:03

Isn't it eight?

2:04

I think so.

2:05

Yeah, it was eight.

2:06

Oh, Jesus.

2:07

Okay.

2:08

Well then, you know, because you could do even four through eight is kind of a,

2:10

obviously mission possible three sort of a prologue.

2:12

Right.

2:13

Like that's the confidante.

2:14

It's a wash.

2:15

To me, that franchise is more impressive, maintaining quality.

2:18

Or you could do three to seven and just be like, and then they had a weird cliffhanger.

2:22

And you're made another one.

2:23

Weird.

2:24

I mean, we do have to live in a world where they botched the ending really badly.

2:29

Now Griffin, take it easy just because you want Toy Story to win.

2:32

Doesn't mean you have to say that they botched it really badly.

2:34

It is a botch it really badly.

2:36

I think that movie sucks.

2:37

Who is that?

2:38

I find that movie so frustrating.

2:41

He's going to be weird.

2:42

Anything we throw at him, he'll be like, I actually turns out it's bad.

2:44

No, I want to say, I'm ready to be normal about this movie.

2:47

This is not my favorite movie of the year.

2:50

We need like a big lot.

2:51

Ready to be normal.

2:52

How many tote bags of merchandise did you bring today?

2:58

One, I had one already here.

2:59

We're going to take some social videos on this.

3:01

How many pieces of Toy Story apparel are you wearing right now?

3:05

Currently three.

3:07

What's the third?

3:08

You have a hat, a shirt, a shoe.

3:10

I got the Adidas before they sold out.

3:13

That was a multiple alarms drop.

3:16

I'll have you now.

3:17

Those are cool shoes.

3:18

Thank you.

3:19

You're welcome.

3:20

He's just like, you know what?

3:22

I'm going to, I'm just, I'm on board.

3:24

I'm just on board.

3:25

I'm about to correct what you're about to ask.

3:27

Well, no, I'm going to say Griffin, you have now added a new case to your iPad?

3:31

Well, I've joined the pond.

3:34

I'm on the pond.

3:36

I have a lily pad case.

3:37

I have smarty pants and I have snappy here on my desk.

3:40

I noticed snappy before.

3:42

This is the lily pad.

3:44

It's just a case for it.

3:46

It's like an actual iPad.

3:48

Is that that makes sense?

3:49

There was a tweak going around that was semi viral of like, why are they producing the

3:53

evil toy?

3:54

It was basically a version of, you know, the classic like, at long last we've created

3:59

the torment nexus.

4:00

Yes.

4:01

Famous from the novel.

4:02

Do not create the tormentor.

4:03

At long last we've created the lily pad.

4:06

Yes.

4:07

Famous movie.

4:08

Do not create the lily pad.

4:09

Well, because it's right.

4:10

It's like, obviously you make toys of villains, but this is saying we made the device for

4:14

real.

4:15

The device that breaks Bonnie's face says is right.

4:18

It's a flawed device.

4:20

Now I want to clarify, there are two main lily pad toys.

4:22

There's this, which is just an iPad case that you put your own tablet into.

4:27

Yeah.

4:28

So in that case, don't hate the case.

4:30

Hate the tablet, right?

4:32

If the tablet's causing psychological damage.

4:35

Sure.

4:36

The other one is like a super nerfed down dumb like learn your ABC's led tablet.

4:42

I assume it does not have social network.

4:44

They have held off from making anything that dangerous.

4:47

Yes.

4:48

But we will, I will give these to you on social, Marie.

4:52

The snappy I have the camera character break out, break out star of the new film.

4:57

It is a functional camera.

4:58

I have been taking stealth picks the last couple of weeks, including a snappy version of

5:03

Stavvy of Tracy Letz.

5:06

I have some very goofy pictures on this low quality digital camera.

5:10

I can't wait.

5:11

I can't wait to, how do we get them off?

5:13

Well, much like in this movie, you got hard wire.

5:17

You got to plug it in.

5:19

The double A gang, they all need cables.

5:22

Oh my God, what was I going to ask you?

5:24

I had another toy story related question.

5:26

I don't know.

5:27

I think we've both just so overwhelmed.

5:28

Was it due to shoes light up?

5:29

They don't.

5:30

You saw a post that the shoes light up and I want to make it clear those were the child

5:35

versions and I bought the adult.

5:37

Yes.

5:38

I don't let the adult versions light up.

5:39

I wonder what.

5:40

No, thank God I am one size over being a child.

5:41

Footwise.

5:42

What size?

5:43

I think it's seven and a half.

5:45

It depends on how much flexibility I want.

5:47

I think I'm a men's five.

5:49

Yeah.

5:50

What were you going to ask?

5:51

I was going to ask, how old is Bonnie?

5:54

Bonnie, she's eight and a half in this film and blaze is supposed to be about nine, nine

5:58

and a half.

5:59

They say she's nine.

6:00

Yeah.

6:01

She's eight and a half in this film in Toy Story 4.

6:03

She's starting kindergarten.

6:04

Someone assume she's five.

6:05

Okay.

6:06

Okay.

6:07

So three, three years in change.

6:08

I think it should be illegal for illegal for eight and a half year olds to text.

6:16

So, yeah.

6:17

Other people.

6:18

You know, there's, Britain's bringing in a band.

6:20

It's, it's the future of the world.

6:23

We all saw this film together.

6:24

Basically, the smartphone band for any kid under 16 is sort of, it seems to be the sort

6:29

of future.

6:30

At one point, David, you screamed.

6:31

This is a movie about, sorry.

6:32

It was put it to you.

6:33

It, but it was a loud whisper.

6:35

It was at this movies about bad parenting.

6:38

I was, I was feeling a little chuckle.

6:39

I was really upset.

6:40

You were getting worked up.

6:41

I was, I was really upset by how all the kids just talking to strangers on the phone.

6:46

On the internet.

6:47

Yeah.

6:48

It's just, it's just one of those things.

6:50

It's just like, I don't know.

6:51

We got to this thing and I'm like, you know, read the manual before you maybe hand your

6:55

child a smart tablet.

6:57

It's like Club Penguin where you're like, this is a closed loop safe space only for children.

7:01

And then of course, there have been 15 years of like Club Penguin lawsuits.

7:05

Of course.

7:06

But also Club Penguin was in like the beginning days of this.

7:10

And this is just, you know, Bonnie's parents, I just have a lot of questions about Bonnie.

7:14

Love Bonnie.

7:15

Yeah.

7:16

She's great.

7:17

Bonnie is a genius.

7:18

She's an incredible kid.

7:19

Look, the, here's the thing they, that's working against them.

7:23

They live in a world ascension toys who are plotting at all times to do all kinds of shit

7:27

that they don't know about.

7:28

So that's so true.

7:29

Yeah.

7:30

I don't have to deal with that.

7:31

I have to deal with a lot of stuff as a parent.

7:32

The toys are not alive.

7:33

The toys working possibly against me.

7:36

Yeah.

7:37

You don't know.

7:38

I actually do know because I'm a grown up.

7:39

Yeah.

7:40

I will say.

7:41

I will say.

7:42

I will say.

7:43

I will say.

7:44

I will say.

7:45

The toys turn out to be alive.

7:46

Yeah.

7:47

Okay.

7:48

It is, it is well established that Bonnie's dad is a dope and the toys love fucking with him

7:52

in particular.

7:53

In the fourth one, I feel like that's a big narrative.

7:55

They find it fun.

7:56

I mean, they get the cops called on.

7:58

They almost killed that whole family.

8:00

Yeah.

8:01

They're like driving the cars.

8:02

They're like driving the cars.

8:03

Yeah.

8:04

Into a crowd of people.

8:05

Right.

8:06

I think it is the greatest bit this movie has as a sort of like large global bit across

8:10

the film.

8:11

There are four movies where the toys have to be so strategic about what they do to not

8:15

break the rules of the world.

8:17

And in this one, they're like no one's paying attention.

8:19

No one's paying attention.

8:20

And if it is, that is their hack a little bit.

8:23

They'll lie to themselves.

8:24

Yeah.

8:25

People are so addicted to computer.

8:26

Seems like the rules are that they just kind of automatically shut down when they're

8:30

seen.

8:31

Well, we'll get true, but I would say they break it more and more and they're by this

8:35

point, they're kind of breaking it a lot.

8:37

Like, you know, the toys are trying to animate unless they are truly in like the hands

8:42

of a child.

8:43

And then there's a point of finger at a lingering question from the first movie, which

8:46

is her question.

8:47

Why does Buzz shut down if he thinks he's not a toy?

8:50

It's a question people have always had in this movie is sort of a knowledge.

8:54

Yeah.

8:55

Really cool.

8:56

Cool.

8:57

And it's not just like even though Buzz for some reason is not blessed with the knowledge

9:02

that he is a toy that most toys seem to be blessed with.

9:04

He still has the subconscious need to go limp.

9:09

And what's the internal logic there?

9:10

And I don't think they guild the lily pad on that one.

9:12

I think it's a pretty simple one line.

9:14

I think I'm going to go.

9:15

Nope.

9:16

No, no, no.

9:17

This is the bed we made.

9:18

This is the bed we made.

9:19

It's not the bed we made.

9:20

It is.

9:21

You said that on a prior.

9:22

It's a bed we made.

9:23

It is.

9:24

You said that on a prior.

9:25

It's a bed we made.

9:26

It's a bed we made.

9:27

It's a bed we made.

9:28

One person made the bed.

9:29

There's one bed maker in the room.

9:30

Although you don't drive me as a person that makes their bed.

9:33

So much.

9:34

You know what?

9:35

I do like constructing things.

9:38

No, we mean we don't mean making a bed out of like wood.

9:41

We mean like making your bed like pulling the sheet out.

9:44

He interpreted that way.

9:46

It's all we need.

9:47

He's telling us.

9:48

It's storytelling.

9:49

Griffin, can I?

9:50

It depends on the day.

9:51

It's a big depends on the day.

9:52

Can I ask you a question?

9:53

Please.

9:54

Because I don't think any of us have ever been to where you live.

9:57

Uh-huh.

9:58

Do you have like novelty sheets bedding?

10:00

No, no, no, no.

10:01

I have grown up bed sheets.

10:02

Oh, grown up bed sheets?

10:03

I've got to say I'm a little surprised.

10:06

Yeah, bed threads.

10:07

I can call out the company bed threads.

10:09

I was always a Brooklyn guy and then I feel like they haven't sponsored the podcast in

10:15

a while.

10:16

I'm sorry.

10:17

Come on back Brooklyn.

10:18

Please.

10:19

Brooklyn and I need to get new to you.

10:20

Yeah.

10:21

I need to do that.

10:22

I'm a good.

10:23

A very good company called bed threads.

10:24

Romely gifted me and then I bought some additional stuff from them.

10:26

Okay.

10:27

Yeah.

10:28

It's a mature brown and cream linen.

10:31

Okay.

10:32

It feels still feel very woody coated to me.

10:34

Maybe subtly.

10:35

Very subtly.

10:36

Maybe you can add some like red and yellow throw pillows.

10:40

Uh, sure.

10:41

Kind of like Disney bound your bed a bit.

10:43

Yeah.

10:44

Ben to answer your question.

10:45

The other toys choose to shut down.

10:48

So it's not to be caught, right?

10:50

And obviously in the first movie they willingly break the rule because Woody reveals himself

10:53

to be alive to sit in order to save the day, right?

10:57

But it feels like it's more like a moral code kind of thing and buzz always would just

11:02

go into seemingly hyper sleep without it being acknowledged.

11:06

And in this one, there is the moment where the human guard comes when they're by the

11:10

dock.

11:11

The future buzz.

11:12

The tech buzzes, the high tech buzzes and they go like, why did we just shut down?

11:15

Yeah.

11:16

Right.

11:17

But they basically say that it's like a defensive protective maneuver in star command

11:21

programming or whatever.

11:22

Okay.

11:23

That they enter like a shutdown mode in self defense.

11:26

And then they start to unpack what's going on.

11:28

You know, yeah.

11:29

I think I should buy some more Nick's gear.

11:31

I'm trying to remember what movie this episode is about.

11:35

Oh, Toy Story 5.

11:36

So what is the podcast?

11:37

Blank Trek with Griffin and David.

11:38

I'm Griffin.

11:39

I'm David.

11:40

It's podcast about filmography's directives who have massive success early on in their

11:43

careers and are given a series of blank checks to make whatever crazy passion projects

11:47

they want.

11:48

And sometimes in one year, they make the least existent film of 2026 going straight

11:54

to Hulu.

11:55

This is true.

11:56

No offense to it.

11:57

I mean, maybe the smidge of offense to it by the.

12:00

And then within mere months within the blink of an eye one might say yes.

12:06

Have another movie open over like $150 million to mess.

12:09

It sure seems like it might not hit 200, but it's going to do a very solid 150 plus.

12:15

It did 17.5 Thursday.

12:17

Very good.

12:18

Preview number.

12:19

That's a big movie that is.

12:20

I don't know if you know this.

12:22

Yeah.

12:23

Or children.

12:24

It's for children.

12:25

Allegedly.

12:26

The only animated film that has beaten that as a Thursday preview is Incredibles 2 which

12:29

is 182 open is the current record holder for animated film and it beat it by one million.

12:35

Yes.

12:36

Right?

12:37

That did it inside out to didn't beat it.

12:39

No.

12:40

Yeah.

12:41

Inside out to was just this incredible moment.

12:42

A hold.

12:43

Well, the hold was no no is this moment where everything had been opening poorly.

12:47

And people were like for like three months.

12:49

The box office is dead.

12:50

People were back to like movies are over.

12:52

Yes.

12:53

And then inside out to is coming on everyone was like no, and even cares about this.

12:56

The trailers have been kind of whatever.

12:57

And then it opened huge and everyone was like, oh, well, all right.

13:01

You know, like sort of the start of people being like, well, I guess some stuff does work.

13:04

And then more and more stuff started working.

13:06

And I mean, this is kind of turned around.

13:08

Yeah.

13:09

So story four had a 12 million preview.

13:12

They were projecting last night that this was doing 1314 and it came in.

13:15

It came in high.

13:16

Many millions about that.

13:17

I love it.

13:18

It's like it's over performing in a year where the box office is doing great.

13:22

And not only that, there is a robust variety of different types of movies.

13:26

I love the movies.

13:27

I love the movie.

13:29

We loved movies.

13:30

There was people pocket watching disclosure day because they were like, it feels like

13:34

they're not even trying to advertise this to Gen Z.

13:37

And then it opened and in the opening weekend, which was above estimates or above projections,

13:42

then they were like, oh, and look at the exit tracking.

13:44

It was 75% over 30.

13:46

And I'm like, what's the problem?

13:48

Yes, fucking one.

13:49

Every movie doesn't have to be for everyone.

13:51

Right.

13:52

They successfully got 50 year olds to go to the movies.

13:54

Good.

13:55

I agree.

13:58

There was just a really funny post on the blankies right.

14:01

I wanted to find it, but it's, I don't know where it ended up.

14:04

But someone talking about the film's mantra stand.

14:07

We have.

14:08

We have in the mini series is of course called Pazzi.

14:11

Pazzi.

14:12

Pazzi.

14:13

Someone just said that the Star Wars, the Mandalorian and Grogu standee had tipped over

14:19

at their and someone just posted the manda flore and I just haven't really gotten

14:24

it.

14:25

That's what it feels like.

14:26

The movies are back in Mandalorian.

14:27

It's just like on the like face down and I was like, who cares?

14:30

There couldn't be a better failure amongst the successes.

14:34

And it's not even that I have spiked for that movie, but it just represents every bad

14:37

habit of studio filmmaking for the last 15, 20 years.

14:41

Even you're not quite beloved, but you're some, you know, masters of the universe, which

14:45

you sort of enjoyed.

14:46

I feel like I haven't seen you yet.

14:49

But like that one too, it's just kind of like, nope, this form, this rulebook is going

14:52

to get tossed like I don't think it's bad for that movie to flop.

14:56

I think it's probably beneficial to the movie culture.

14:58

Yeah.

14:59

And in fact, everything I dislike about that movie is the stuff is the formula of

15:03

stuff.

15:04

The formula that is I think causing it to fail and that I think we need to get a wash

15:09

out of the system.

15:10

I still think obviously, you know, it seems Spider-Man will do well.

15:13

Some of these things are going to well and we're sticking today talking about the fifth

15:16

film in a film and we're talking about Toy Story 5, which is potentially going to break

15:21

records for the franchise.

15:22

That movie that I think is successful and very enjoyable, but obviously, I'm happy

15:30

you have it and I'm happy people have it.

15:32

Easy.

15:33

I don't think it really, it does not quite justify its existence.

15:38

If you, you know, if you pointed gun at me, sure, I'm like, I don't know that it really

15:42

added enough new that we had to have it, but at least it's good and at least it's doing

15:46

well and it's well made.

15:47

And I'm like, I'm kind of basically like, it's all good.

15:49

Yeah.

15:50

Like, wow, yeah.

15:51

They had a whole, you know, sort of room in the Toy Story world that they never explored.

15:57

I'm like, I feel like we're hitting a lot of the stuff we've thought about before in

16:01

Toy Story, but that's okay.

16:02

Here's what I'll say.

16:03

I think I put the other four above it.

16:06

I rate four much higher than most people.

16:09

I do two.

16:10

You like three less than the size of it.

16:11

I think I put this over three.

16:12

I just don't like three.

16:14

I rewatched three and four after we saw five and four grew in my estimation.

16:19

I just love it.

16:20

Four is great, but four is very controversial.

16:22

Whatever.

16:23

The thing's on the reddit you would not believe.

16:26

I would say the Toy Story reddit.

16:28

Yeah, where people call Bonnie a and I quote the normal zone.

16:31

The what?

16:34

Someone did the Anthony.

16:35

I almost said this to Ben before the record and then I said, I'm when we were in the theater

16:40

and I was like, I'm going to save this for the on mic response.

16:42

Ben is stunned silence.

16:43

I don't think that's acceptable.

16:45

I think that person should apologize.

16:47

I just want to say that the cartoon character Bonnie, before you got here, I was telling Ben

16:53

and David that I have spent some time on the Toy Story reddit recently and the range

16:58

place.

16:59

It's a really it's a really sad place.

17:00

But sad and scary.

17:01

I used to be on the blueie reddit because I just wanted to know like when new episodes

17:05

were dropping.

17:06

And after a little while, I was like, I think I cannot see even just headlines from this

17:11

thing anymore.

17:12

These people are out of their mind because three quarters of them are like, childless

17:16

adult here, but I love blueie more than I love my own family.

17:19

And you're just like, oh my god.

17:21

Right.

17:22

It's a, you know, it's a special interest or whatever.

17:24

But like, I wasn't getting like, calling a child the seaword vibes from the reddit.

17:31

I was getting more like, I'm like, you know, a 30 year old man and I'm trying to decide

17:37

what, which of my toys to bring with me to the theater.

17:39

I would say that's half of the reddit.

17:41

Okay.

17:42

I would say that's half and that's the sweet half.

17:45

And that's the sweet half.

17:47

That's the emphasis I put on that.

17:50

That is the innocuous.

17:51

I'm not saying sweet.

17:52

I'm saying like, that's the like, oh, that's sweet.

17:55

I understand that it's not at least a level in, but it's maybe a little less.

17:58

You know the Anthony Bourdain meme about Henry Kissinger where it's like, you read about

18:02

what he did and you're going to want to attack him with a hammer, a restaurant or

18:06

whatever.

18:07

Uh, people, someone recently posted that with Bonnie where when you just, it's once

18:12

you've been to Cambodia, you'll never stop wanting to be Henry Kissinger to death with

18:16

your bare hands is the is the Bourdain line.

18:18

And it was once you read the full, you know what it was?

18:21

It wasn't even the full plot breakdown.

18:23

It was that the little golden book had shipped.

18:26

So people were breaking down the spoilers from the story from the children's book adaptation

18:30

and it was replacement.

18:32

Once you read the little golden book adaptation of Toy Story 5, you'll never stop wanting

18:36

to beat Bonnie to death with a hammer.

18:39

Right.

18:40

Why?

18:41

They don't like about it.

18:42

They're like, Bonnie is disrespectful to the toys.

18:45

What?

18:46

She's a child who doesn't know they're alive.

18:48

Okay.

18:49

All right.

18:50

I think we got a, we got a pivot away from it.

18:52

I know.

18:53

I'm like actually really upset by all the sad Bonnie's their maniacs on the internet.

18:57

Their maniacs on the internet.

18:58

And what they don't understand, of course, is that Andy is a cuck loser in Bonnie Rock.

19:01

Andy is absolutely a cuck loser.

19:04

With every increasing film, Andy is found dead in a ditch.

19:06

Bonnie is such a champion.

19:08

Especially because the plots of the, the first, the Andy movies, the way he plays,

19:15

well, basically on a spot.

19:17

It's so one and it's so one and it's so one and it's so one and it's so one and it's

19:21

so one and it's so fun.

19:22

It's so fun.

19:23

Now, I mean, I think they also realize as they made these movies, like, oh, right.

19:27

That's interesting.

19:28

We should have more and more fun with that, depicting the play or whatever.

19:33

But the first two United States, from outside, there's a bad guy and then Woody and Buzz

19:37

fucking kill him.

19:38

People talk to a pork shop.

19:39

Yeah.

19:40

Or one I bought one of the baddest guys of all time.

19:42

He's terrible.

19:43

Well, I mean, once you read, once you read about what evil doctor pork shop day, you'll

19:48

never want to stop eating the death of a hammer.

19:50

And if you beat him to death of the hammer, you'll get a bunch of coins inside of him.

19:56

Today we're talking Toy Story 5 directed by Andrew Stan, which is a fascinating case

20:00

of a fifth film in a franchise directed by someone who's directed none of the previous,

20:05

but has quietly kind of been the author of this whole franchise.

20:09

He's always had a hand.

20:11

Yes.

20:12

The reason why he's silent evolved.

20:13

He's the author.

20:14

And so many ways he was, I mean, he's certainly been driven to the same.

20:17

He's been driven to try to erase the participation of one hugging fella.

20:20

Yeah.

20:21

Here's my thing with lots of hugging, Lassiter.

20:23

You look at the movies he made where he didn't have everyone working with him.

20:28

And you're like, huh, where is the juice?

20:30

Is that cars?

20:31

Is that what we're talking about?

20:32

Yes.

20:33

But also like the fucking Sky Dance animated film.

20:37

Oh, he's now over seeing.

20:38

Yeah, but he's not, he's not even directing.

20:41

I think Lassiter was quite vital to the original Toy Story.

20:44

He was.

20:45

Yes, yes, no question.

20:46

But Stanton was always involved.

20:47

You're saying?

20:48

Yes.

20:49

Three?

20:50

Three is the one he's least involved.

20:51

That's the worst one.

20:52

You know what?

20:53

That was my take rewatching it.

20:54

Yeah.

20:55

It, it, it's so nasty.

20:58

I mean, I've, I've ranted about it before.

21:00

Like I just, yeah, I think it's a movie that's just like about grownups feeling guilty or

21:05

what about growing up, whatever.

21:06

And I'm like, you need to take a pill and relax, like calm down.

21:09

I also think the moment where they're all going to die in the furnace sucks and is ruined

21:13

by a stupid day of six mocking.

21:15

It makes so bad.

21:16

It makes no sense.

21:17

The whole thing sucks.

21:18

That movie is stupid.

21:19

And now Tarantino's out here being like, that's the best movie ever made.

21:23

Why they ever make more please come on our podcast, Quentin.

21:25

I respect a lot of the movies he've made, but you're also.

21:27

He's too busy hanging out in Tel Aviv.

21:29

Yeah, that's right.

21:30

Today we'll tell you what movie he almost did on this podcast.

21:33

Let's keep what we're not going to talk about it today.

21:36

Um, it is this weird thing though.

21:38

We're right.

21:39

There's a portion of people who also were just like, that is the best ending the franchise

21:42

we'll ever have.

21:43

And it is disgusting.

21:44

David is putting a middle finger up to that person to me.

21:47

And then he successfully pivoted to a strong man.

21:51

Here's the thing I like about this movie.

21:53

And this is sort of the, the internal battle of what you're saying.

21:58

This is the first one to not even attempt to be an ending since totally right.

22:03

Yes, exactly.

22:04

Four still had that responsibility.

22:06

It seemed where they were like, well, I guess we'll make it a good bite of Woody.

22:09

People are so upset at the idea that we're ruining the sanctity of the three ending that

22:13

we need to have an ending that's similarly kind of emotional and built around closure.

22:18

And this one is like, who are we fucking kidding?

22:21

You know, I probably keep making these as long as Dana Walden said recently that this

22:27

is the most streamed franchise on Disney+.

22:31

Can confirm.

22:32

For my asshole.

22:33

Right.

22:34

Above any other Disney Pixar Marvel star worst thing.

22:37

This is so infinitely valuable to them.

22:39

These characters are so beyond evergreen that this movie does feel in certain ways a little

22:44

bit more like the Toy Story shorts and Toy Story of Terror, which I love where it's just

22:49

like, let's just have another adventure.

22:51

Right?

22:52

Yeah, basically, it's got a, it's got a defined angle.

22:55

It's a bit smart.

22:57

And it's cleaning up some nerd business.

23:00

It does some good clean up for your nerds out there.

23:03

I'm taking my daughter to it on Sunday.

23:05

Wait, what screening are you going to?

23:07

I don't.

23:08

When?

23:09

I think noon.

23:10

Because we're going with the year-old.

23:11

We're going to the 11.

23:12

I thought you were leaving.

23:13

Aren't you?

23:14

That night.

23:15

Red eye.

23:16

No, I'm taking her Sunday.

23:17

Yeah, we're going Sunday.

23:18

Okay.

23:19

Well, I know I won't be at that one.

23:20

I think it's noon.

23:21

It's sorry.

23:22

But I wonder what she will make of.

23:27

I'm constantly questioning what kids get out of, especially this movie.

23:33

Well, make up the big tech message of the kind of like kids should play like this

23:37

on like this, because it's like, this is a little old for like, you know, like that.

23:41

I don't know that my daughter has thought too hard so far about like socializing, right?

23:45

You know, which is a big part of me.

23:46

Well, your daughter's very bonny coated in a lot of ways.

23:47

Your daughter reminds me of Bonnie.

23:49

That's totally fair.

23:51

I know what you mean about how she plays, but you know, this is heavy for a five year

23:55

old.

23:56

I'm not sure it'll translate.

23:57

And I'm almost certain.

23:59

And again, she's five.

24:01

So like, you know, she's not the only viewer of this movie that she will not understand

24:05

the Jesse, the big Jesse plot.

24:07

I think that's going to go completely over her head to the point of confusion.

24:11

Interesting.

24:12

But she's seen too.

24:13

Yeah, she's not going to get it.

24:14

She's not going to get the like Jesse named her daughter after.

24:17

Like that's just not going to make sense.

24:18

I love that.

24:19

That's the one thing in this movie that I didn't like, but we can talk about it.

24:26

That emotionally devastated me.

24:27

And I thought in a way that was not overstated, which I appreciate that they didn't make

24:32

too much of a meal out of the moment.

24:34

And that it's not the ending point.

24:35

Yeah.

24:36

That it is a beat to beat.

24:38

Are you going to name your potential future child after a toy?

24:43

I had always said I was going to name my kids Brewster and Shriplie.

24:47

After a movie.

24:48

Brewster and Ripley.

24:49

Yeah, after Ellen Ripley and Brewster McLeod.

24:51

Yeah, I know.

24:52

I mean, after Ellen Ripley or Alan DeGeneres.

24:56

That's so true.

24:57

I could name my child Little Ellen or David's mom.

25:00

Yeah, sure.

25:01

And not an homage to a great woman if you're if you so choose.

25:05

Yeah, I should name my child after David.

25:07

What is it?

25:08

I'm not sure that Ripley's, I'm trying, I'm trying everyone Ripley's first name becomes

25:12

is Ripley's name in the first alien I forget.

25:15

Ellen, you mean?

25:16

Yes.

25:17

Like does Cameron give her for, you know what I mean?

25:19

Like is in the first movie like everyone's got like a last name and like, you don't

25:23

really know much about the readouts.

25:26

You might.

25:27

Yeah, I don't remember.

25:28

Yeah, I might memory she's Ellen from the beginning.

25:31

Let's find out.

25:32

I'm Ellen.

25:33

I mean, I think it's definitely harder for young boys to have toys that have like names

25:37

that you would give your child.

25:39

Like, Bionicle, you know, like if you call your child Bionicle, like you get put on a

25:44

little list.

25:46

For the government, you know, I mean, while my favorite toy was named Samantha Parkington,

25:52

which is a totally normal name for a girl.

25:54

Why Annacle is also the name of the property.

25:55

It's not the name of a character.

25:56

Okay, what are the names of the characters?

25:58

Yeah, I'm looking at a Bionicle.

26:00

I'm looking it up.

26:01

But I wonder, I wonder what she will make it to.

26:04

I'm very interested to see.

26:06

I'm very like in dream to know what her what her take will be if she has one.

26:10

She also might just kind of be like, you know, that was great.

26:14

Like Jesse and Forky and all my friends were in a movie and I had a great time.

26:17

I think that's always been the magic of these movies though, is that they move fast enough

26:20

and they're bright enough.

26:21

And there is the sort of cheat code they have of, oh, you can like explore existential

26:26

themes because your movie stars a cowboy, a spaceman, and a dinosaur.

26:30

And they're fun.

26:31

Like visually, you know, but I do think it's why she likes three lilies because three

26:35

is the kind of the slowest and kind of the most about like the experience of grown-ups.

26:41

So it's a little, it's a little, it's her least favorite she never asked for.

26:44

It's my least favorite.

26:45

I guess I would, I think I do put this above three.

26:48

Wow.

26:49

Wow.

26:50

I'm like, I'm working on it in real time.

26:52

I've certainly, I've only seen this movie twice.

26:56

And it's been a mad rough to see it twice.

26:58

Really?

26:59

Griffin seen this movie twice and it technically was released last night.

27:02

Yes.

27:03

And I'm only holding two more sets of tickets.

27:05

I also saw it twice.

27:06

Yeah, I'm sorry with with Griffin to both screenings.

27:08

Yes.

27:09

You sure did?

27:10

You're saying this like you're admitting it to the police.

27:13

Let's be clear.

27:14

We want that out of the theater of the previous screening.

27:17

And you said, is there a way to see that again before we record?

27:20

Because I would like to.

27:21

You do say that screening because our screening was, you know, we're recording this.

27:25

We could go.

27:26

I remember when we was coming out.

27:27

Really enjoyed it.

27:28

And I really connected with the message of talking about technology.

27:32

Yeah.

27:33

27:33

Totally.

27:34

In our contemporary society.

27:35

I know.

27:36

But what does it make a torture about how podcasts are bad?

27:38

And we're fucked.

27:39

The toys are very sick.

27:40

Is like Bonnie's listening to too much podcast.

27:42

Toy Story 6 should be the toys start doing a podcast and pretend they're humans.

27:47

Right.

27:48

And then but they say they have to like hide their identities and then hire actors to

27:50

play.

27:51

And then people are like trying to push them to pivot to video.

27:53

And they're like, oh my god, Griffin, I love this.

27:56

Yes.

27:57

Because it's building up what we established in Toy Story 5, which is now the toys can communicate

28:03

for us at.

28:04

I don't think you learn Ellen's name until the camera one.

28:07

There's no readout.

28:08

There's no like moment where you like see a screen being like Dallas Ripley.

28:12

You know what I mean?

28:13

So like I think they came up with that later.

28:15

The other characters all have first names.

28:17

They have later given first names, but like they're credited just as in the uncrossed

28:22

Dallas Ripley Lambert Brett Kane, Ash Parker.

28:26

You're looking at the uncredits for that.

28:28

And like, and like it kind of makes sense because of course famously Ripley was sort of written

28:32

without a gender.

28:33

Yes.

28:34

And so maybe they didn't think about it.

28:37

I think most of the characters were sort of that was the idea and no gendered and erased

28:41

or whatever.

28:42

And then like obviously in Cameron's film, he's like, no, she's mother.

28:46

Yes.

28:47

You know, we're going to get into all of this.

28:49

And she has a first name.

28:50

But even in the aliens, I mean, how many times does she say like, I'm Ellen?

28:55

Like does she say that to Newt?

28:57

Like I think she says I'm Ripley.

28:58

Every time the DJ drops a track and she does a little dance to welcome her next guest.

29:01

Of course.

29:02

I'm Ellen.

29:03

Okay.

29:04

Before we lose this thread, Ellen Centric series, when you think about all the doors, I

29:08

wonder.

29:09

Yes.

29:10

Go ahead.

29:11

You're discussing how your daughter is going to react.

29:13

I wonder.

29:14

And I'm wondering just like with her and kids overall, how is the screen time of it all

29:21

to connect with kids?

29:23

Like what is your daughter's relationship to tech?

29:26

She watches TV on an iPad and she knows that we often are like, that's enough TV on the

29:32

iPad.

29:33

And she doesn't say that is her only relationship.

29:34

She doesn't do anything else on the iPad.

29:36

Yeah.

29:37

She doesn't even really know how to use the iPad.

29:38

Like I know that that happens at a certain point that they kind of like start to be like,

29:43

oh, I get that if I, you know, scroll over to this and press this like a read politic.

29:47

The most she can use, but she loves propolis.

29:50

And I'm just like, no, like, you know, you can't read that stuff like daily wire.

29:55

That's where you're going to get your new hair and like, use max.

29:58

Right.

29:59

No, she doesn't even know.

30:00

She knows that if she knows how to press a button to make the next episode play, that's

30:04

the most she's learned so far.

30:06

Yeah.

30:07

You know, when frickin' Peppa Pig has, you know, been spooling up.

30:12

What is the angle on Peppa?

30:14

Why is that stuck around?

30:15

I don't see the appeal.

30:17

I don't either.

30:18

Yeah.

30:19

I'm not a fan.

30:20

I don't like Peppa.

30:21

Oh, Peppa herself.

30:22

Yeah, she seems like a nice girl.

30:24

She's a bit naughty.

30:25

Oh, okay.

30:26

No change.

30:27

Interesting.

30:28

I don't know.

30:29

I don't know.

30:30

I get it now.

30:31

It's just one of those things that Peppa Pig were just like, what do you like?

30:35

And I'm like making eggs in the, you know, for everyone in the street.

30:38

I'm just like, I like mounting in money bottles.

30:41

I'm like saying it to myself.

30:42

I'm like, it's all she fucking says.

30:44

She says it every time she does.

30:45

It's like her catchphrase.

30:46

It's like, I'm Peppa Pig and I like jumping in muddy puddles.

30:48

Yeah.

30:49

I just really respect that they're, that the animation style for Peppa Pig is so crude.

30:54

Yeah, it sure is.

30:55

It's an interesting design.

30:56

It's interesting.

30:57

It's got to be getting more, more like uncanny valley shit.

31:01

Like, well, yeah, that right.

31:02

I don't, I don't truck with the right, the weirdly like low-stake CGI human people.

31:07

That sucks.

31:08

Well, my friend Spike often refers to as a cartoon shows that look like shampoo bottles.

31:12

Exactly.

31:13

Exactly.

31:14

Exactly.

31:15

Yeah, just human slop.

31:16

Whatever you want to hear.

31:17

Like, Peppa Pig, yes, I'm like, this is artfully made in its way and it's got it's

31:20

bit.

31:21

And I find it a little grating, but I'm not like, this is evil like Coco Melano or

31:26

whatever.

31:27

Yeah, they're British from what, what kind of region?

31:30

What's their accent?

31:31

This is just sort of living the countryside.

31:32

Okay.

31:33

I also just find the dad kind of annoying.

31:36

I don't like that.

31:37

He's kind of a buffoon.

31:38

I don't like that he has the hair.

31:39

I don't like the hairs either.

31:40

He needs to change.

31:41

It makes sense because he's a pig on his chin and chin and chin.

31:43

Exactly.

31:44

He's got the kind of like, like, spikey hair.

31:45

Yeah, I don't like it.

31:46

Yeah, Ben likes it.

31:47

I'm, you know, I'm so, you know, I'm a blueie loyalist and blueie is just so much better

31:52

than Peppa, but Peppa is fine, you know.

31:54

She's fine.

31:55

I like Peppa.

31:56

Like, I mean, I don't like Gabby like, I don't like the Washington.

31:59

Gabby isn't like Gabby's dollhouse.

32:00

Yeah, but I mean, like, my daughter likes Gabby and I'm like,

32:02

Gabby's fine.

32:03

She's all right.

32:04

Yeah, exactly.

32:05

And then when you look at a little loud, when you leave the room, Gabby's like, listen,

32:08

they're out to get us the great replacement theory.

32:12

I guess that wouldn't make sense for Gabby.

32:14

Yeah, right.

32:15

Yeah, right.

32:16

Yeah.

32:17

Yeah.

32:18

Yeah.

32:19

Yeah.

32:20

Yeah.

32:21

Yeah.

32:22

Yeah.

32:23

Yeah.

32:24

Yeah.

32:25

It terrifies me as like, same.

32:27

I'm like, do I become Tab Kazinsky?

32:30

At the minute I have children.

32:31

Why not just moderate?

32:33

Why must you be Tab Kazinsky all of a sudden?

32:36

Well, I mean, as a parent, I really am interested.

32:39

It's not that hard.

32:40

It's not hard now because she can't read.

32:44

Well, she's gotten there, but yeah, sure.

32:46

But what's it going to get harder when she's like, you just want to have the tablets?

32:51

But the way that Bonnie is.

32:53

Yeah, the problem is, it's not so upset by the group chat.

32:57

Yeah.

32:58

It really, it really, they'll effect it be.

33:01

Yeah.

33:02

It may feel like so much empathy, especially for younger generations.

33:06

Oh, and that this is just from day one, they're growing up with feeling with all of this

33:12

shit.

33:13

Cyber bullying.

33:14

I will say just to provide the more measured take as the only parent in the room, I think

33:18

that the worst of it kind of already happened when there were parents who had no experience

33:24

of their own with.

33:25

I think you're right.

33:26

And we're kind of just letting kids, because it's like, oh, your friends have a cell phone

33:29

you can have one too.

33:30

And now there's a lot more awareness.

33:32

And like my parent generation is a lot more kind of like those things are like cigarettes.

33:36

Like, you know, we're going to keep away as long as possible.

33:40

You should do it.

33:41

You should.

33:42

Not a dick.

33:43

You can't get up anytime.

33:46

Doctors recommend.

33:47

Right.

33:48

And like there's just a lot more hyper awareness about that.

33:52

Your kid, you know, obviously, this movie depicts essentially like very low stakes, but mean

33:57

bullying, right?

33:58

And like your kid will experience social stuff at school anyway, that sucks.

34:04

But yeah, obviously nobody should be socially networked.

34:07

I shouldn't be none of us.

34:08

No, I'm not sure barely.

34:09

But you see how they behave.

34:11

If this movie had been made 10 years ago with this subject matter, it would have been

34:15

a nightmare.

34:16

And this is the right point to make it because of what you're saying, where we are in the

34:19

cultural bell curve.

34:21

And it's sort of in this like we've all now kind of engaged with the worst of what this

34:26

can be.

34:27

It's also not going anywhere.

34:29

I always say this to like my friends who I made on Twitter, including this loser.

34:34

This is true.

34:35

The podcast wouldn't exist.

34:36

Like I'm like, I'm like in the future going to say to my daughter like, oh yeah, you

34:39

know, I made all these friends on Twitter and she'll be like, the website that's illegal,

34:43

the elected Donald Trump.

34:44

That's like in history, books is like, you know, a low point in society.

34:50

Yeah.

34:51

But you know, sometimes like there'd be good memes.

34:53

Yeah.

34:54

There's a lot of funny stuff on that.

34:57

Drill was there.

34:58

Drill, yeah.

34:59

You don't even know about horsey books.

35:00

Oh my god.

35:01

Horsey books.

35:02

Oh my god.

35:03

Oh my god.

35:04

And it'll be like, you know, when our parents were like, oh yeah, back in the day, you would

35:09

just leave the house at the age of five with a guy.

35:11

Right.

35:12

You just get on your horse and ride into the woods and the parents assume they'd see

35:15

you later.

35:16

You do a quick stand by me.

35:17

You learn something from it.

35:19

What was everyone's screen names?

35:22

I was a brother fallout.

35:23

I still have been a lot of things.

35:25

Oh yeah, you're that's too far on.

35:26

Yeah, brother fallout.

35:27

That's me.

35:28

But when I was really young, my first, my hotmail address was King Daza 2000.

35:32

Yeah, very good.

35:33

This is what I'm talking about.

35:34

King Daza 2000.

35:35

That's they let a 13 year old pick his own email.

35:37

Yeah.

35:38

Right.

35:39

I'm going to get a picture on episode, but after the release of a bug's life, I was briefly

35:43

flick lover 98.

35:48

That's a little preview for free.

35:50

And the full discussion can be found on Patreon.

35:52

And you know, I was like, yes, please subscribe.

35:55

Please subscribe.

35:56

But then I very quickly pivoted to I am a fool.

35:59

Are you one, too?

36:00

Oh, yes.

36:01

What's that?

36:02

Is that a song there?

36:03

Or something?

36:04

It was a bit from a, I think, mad magazine had like a counterfeit money drawing and that

36:09

was the serial number on it.

36:12

And I thought it was really funny.

36:13

I am a fool spelled out.

36:14

And then letter R letter U number one number two, which when I got older, red as I am

36:19

a fool are you 12.

36:21

And then of course, in high school, I changed it to fly Brewster fly.

36:25

Yeah, right.

36:26

That's it.

36:27

That's it.

36:28

Which was my original Twitter Twitter, Twitter handle.

36:31

David's opening five with me.

36:32

He loudest bag.

36:33

Yeah, I need some.

36:34

I need some pop a job.

36:35

I'm sure they're in.

36:36

Yeah.

36:37

Oh, yeah.

36:38

I did some social videos after this.

36:40

What are they?

36:41

What are you doing?

36:42

Keto bite.

36:43

Keto bites.

36:44

You know, thank you.

36:45

Papa John says three promotional pizzas right now and I will read them.

36:49

Space Ranger Roni.

36:51

An intergalactic pizza mission awaits this out of this world personal pizza.

36:54

That's what makes it intergalactic.

36:55

Yeah, that's out of this world has double pepperoni cheese and pizza sauce on original

36:59

crust serve with root and tuton ranch.

37:02

So the pizza itself sounds pretty normal other than of course that hyper special root

37:06

and two.

37:07

Okay.

37:08

Okay.

37:09

Then we got reached for the pie.

37:10

This ain't just any not bad.

37:12

Not bad at all.

37:13

This ain't just any personal pizza.

37:14

It's got Italian sausage, banana peppers, cheese and pizza sauce served with.

37:19

You guessed it.

37:20

Rooted in ranch.

37:21

Only in U.S.

37:22

Markets.

37:23

And then the third pie is Sheriff's Roundup.

37:25

This personal pizza's got grilled chicken, onions, cheese, and barbecue sauce on original

37:29

crust.

37:30

And interestingly enough, it comes with a side of, let me check my notes here, root and

37:35

Tutan Ranch only in the US and candidates replaced with special garbage.

37:38

You guys sit Frank Stallone.

37:40

Can you guess that route in Tutan Ranch be my new you guessed it Frank Stallone with any

37:48

cast list?

37:49

That's good.

37:50

I'll have the one with the banana peppers please.

37:52

We're getting all three.

37:53

Okay great.

37:54

No, we're going to get them all.

37:55

I'm just trying to figure out how to order.

37:57

Okay.

37:58

So sorry, just to go back to this, my screen, I had several screen names.

38:02

One of them was Cloves, Lover, Thirteen.

38:05

Cloves?

38:06

Cloves like one wears on one spot.

38:08

Yeah, because I was in a fashion.

38:11

And then punky monkey, oh, I know, stuck around for a while.

38:15

That was like when I got into Green Day.

38:18

And it was a combination of Green Day and God, what was the name of the whole Frank?

38:26

Whole Frank.

38:27

That's the most curious the monkey.

38:29

The monkey.

38:30

Yeah, wasn't same Julius?

38:31

Yeah, but I just was, I had all of that fucking shit.

38:33

This makes sense.

38:34

This checks out.

38:35

Yeah.

38:36

So it was a combination, combining my two interests and Ben Hossley.

38:40

I had briefly cyber-bend 85.

38:43

That's great.

38:44

That's great.

38:45

That's great.

38:46

That's great.

38:47

Straight down the middle.

38:48

Do you remember?

38:49

The whole thing.

38:50

The whole thing.

38:51

The whole thing.

38:52

The whole thing.

38:53

The whole thing.

38:54

The whole thing.

38:55

The whole thing.

38:56

The whole thing.

38:57

The whole thing.

38:58

The whole thing.

38:59

The whole thing.

39:00

Packers.

39:01

Packers, lawnmower, man.

39:02

lawnmower, man.

39:03

You know, do we put antitrust in there?

39:05

You want?

39:06

Never seen that one.

39:07

For chewacity.

39:08

I'm starting our order.

39:09

You're putting it through.

39:10

Yeah, through.

39:11

I'm doing the order because I have an account.

39:14

Just tell me what you're getting though, because how many are we getting here?

39:16

I'm getting three pies, right?

39:17

No, I get four.

39:19

You get four?

39:20

Yeah.

39:21

So people in this person.

39:22

They're personal.

39:23

There's a toy storey five, create your own personal.

39:25

Oh, interesting.

39:26

Yeah, let's, right now.

39:28

Can we get the root and tutin' ranch though?

39:30

Oh, we can.

39:31

Okay, thank God.

39:32

Listeners are gonna love this.

39:33

I'm sorry.

39:34

I haven't, I haven't had Papa Johnson.

39:36

God knows how long.

39:38

You can get Alfredo sauce on the side of your pizza.

39:41

It smells just like.

39:42

What kind of fucked up individual is like, you know what?

39:45

This thing that has cheese in it really needs a little bit more of.

39:48

What kind of fucked up individual?

39:49

His name is Papa John Schlautter.

39:51

We know he's one of us fucked up metal eyes.

39:53

He is a, a squid.

39:54

A squid pizza.

39:55

No, you don't grab flesh.

39:56

Get two of the space ranger ronies.

39:58

Okay.

39:59

Because that one's the most appealing to me anyway.

40:00

Okay.

40:01

David.

40:02

Yes.

40:03

I've had some bad meals in my life.

40:13

I can imagine.

40:14

You know about hew-o?

40:16

I know about hew-o.

40:17

Okay.

40:18

Beloved sponsor of the show.

40:19

Right.

40:20

They're not a supplement.

40:21

This is complete food.

40:23

Very easy to make and very easy to assemble.

40:27

You know, for, you know, 40 grams of protein, you mix it with water, milk in about 30 seconds.

40:31

And it's a complete meal you have instead of food.

40:33

Not a shake on top of food.

40:35

It's got 27 essential vitamins and minerals.

40:38

Got no artificial sweeteners, colors or flavors.

40:41

You can get an RTD bottle that's the Grappin Go version that's got 35 grams of protein,

40:46

7 grams of fiber.

40:47

It's under $5 a meal.

40:49

I like the RTDs.

40:52

I got the chocolate peanut butter.

40:54

I keep those in the fridge.

40:55

You know, we often record in the morning.

40:57

I don't remember to eat breakfast.

40:59

I'm watching the movie.

41:00

And then I'm heading out the door.

41:01

Ugh, I didn't eat anything.

41:03

I just grabbed one of those.

41:04

I chuck it down.

41:05

I feel great.

41:06

I'm ready to do bits.

41:07

Right.

41:08

H-U-E-L.

41:09

So, we've got 15% offline for new customers.

41:13

Code check at hew-o.com slash check.

41:17

That's H-U-E-L.com slash check.

41:21

15% offline for new customers.

41:23

Thank you to hew-o for partnering and supporting our show.

41:28

Okay.

41:29

So maybe we should try and guide us back to talking about the movie and like the tech of

41:40

it all.

41:41

Like how did the message hit with you guys?

41:44

It's portraying like looking at a screen as their sector saw by mess.

41:49

So Toy Story 4 is very successful.

41:52

Very successful.

41:53

I feel like not quite the barn born burner they wanted it.

41:57

We've talked about that a lot.

41:58

It made basically the exact same amount of money as three.

42:01

Yeah, right.

42:02

But there had been this big show.

42:03

And it had been a long time since three, obviously.

42:05

In between three and four, Finding Dory comes out has a huge growth from Finding Emo.

42:10

Incredibles 2 comes out, has a huge growth.

42:13

It made a good 250 mil less than Incredibles 2.

42:16

And it was like isn't Toy Story the number one franchise?

42:19

That was the thing.

42:20

It was like does Toy Story actually have a ceiling and three established it?

42:24

And now it's sort of flat here.

42:26

But these characters endure, they want to make another money.

42:30

They make money.

42:31

Right.

42:32

Andrew Stan has said basically that he, they went to him and said do you have any ideas

42:37

for five?

42:38

And he said let me sit in a room and see if I can come up with something.

42:42

And if something actually excites me, I might noodle with it.

42:46

And he was like, I wasn't gunning to make a fifth Toy Story movie.

42:49

But I didn't like the idea of anyone else doing it.

42:52

And he said I sat down and the two things I thought of immediately were how do they react

42:56

to tech and what if there was an island of 50 buzz layers?

42:59

He had that idea immediately.

43:01

And this is the thing he's always said, which is, and this is why I'm saying like not

43:05

that I'm taking away John Lassler's credit as a director on the first two movies, but

43:09

that he has been the main screenwriter of all but three.

43:13

One is the guy who writes the text of these characters.

43:16

And most of the big ideas tend to trace back to Stan including forky, our greatest friend

43:21

right who Marie has constructed and placed on her desk.

43:23

Yeah.

43:24

So David's wife is sitting on my desk right now.

43:26

She is very, very quietly and respectfully.

43:31

And so he, he built from there.

43:33

And then once he had written the script, he was like, this is what I find interesting.

43:38

If you guys want to make this, I'd happily direct this.

43:40

If this is too weird for you, totally understand.

43:43

He goes ahead and makes it.

43:44

He appoints Kenna Harris to be his co-director, which we've talked about as kind of an apprentice

43:49

position, but really tried to elevate them on this film and say.

43:52

And they have a co-writing credit on it.

43:54

Correct.

43:55

And said that he felt like I don't want to just be like a dude in his 50s or 60s, like

44:00

steam rolling this franchise.

44:03

I need to get like a younger voice in here.

44:05

I need someone who grew up with these movies and now works at Pixar and sort of talked

44:09

about it as a Woody Jesse dynamic.

44:13

And the two of them have said that when they started writing it, they were much more

44:16

kind of binary of, well, tech is bad and the movie is about them defeating tech.

44:21

And they said they kept getting to like the halfway point of the script and realizing,

44:26

Lily Padd's a really uninteresting character.

44:28

If all of what drives her is get rid of the fucking toys.

44:32

And so they had the hook of, well, what is what drives Lily Padd?

44:36

She thinks that she's actually better for Bonnie than the toys are.

44:41

She thinks they're outmoded, but she's still serving the same function, which is to help

44:45

her connect.

44:47

It would be different if she was actively like, I want to ruin a kid's life.

44:51

You would kind of be like, this doesn't, that kind of breaks the sort of universe because

44:55

like toys are always ostensibly there to serve the child.

44:59

They know that that's their sort of deep purpose or whatever.

45:02

I think it was more that she's so against the toys that she doesn't even notice that

45:06

she's harming Bonnie was the kind of thing.

45:10

If that ran throughout the entire movie, they found it dramatically flat.

45:13

Of course.

45:14

And I was, as the movie was starting up, I was kind of a boy.

45:17

Totally.

45:18

Just them fighting a thing because then it's just right.

45:19

That was my greatest concern from the trailers.

45:21

And I heard them say that in an interview and I felt a little relieved.

45:24

And I do think that's the smartest thing the movie does is like, you're not beating tech.

45:29

It's here to stay.

45:30

Yes.

45:31

There would be good that can come from it.

45:33

Right.

45:34

I would say as a parent, I've already encountered people who are trying to like keep

45:38

their kid from ever looking at a screen impossible.

45:41

And it's just sort of like, well, that's silly.

45:43

And in my opinion, I'm not, you know, I know people very, very, touchy about parenting.

45:50

But like every school has like a smart board.

45:52

My wife's a teacher.

45:53

She uses a smart board.

45:54

Smart boards are screens.

45:55

This is like a smart blackboard, basically.

45:59

Exactly.

46:00

It's like, you know, it's become the default in a school.

46:01

It's just like, you know, they can put lots of things on it.

46:04

They can put, you know, just stuff.

46:06

They've written on it.

46:07

They're also show you a video once in a while or whatever.

46:09

And I'm like, we all watched videos in class.

46:12

Like this is not, this is just to the real thing.

46:15

Yeah, this is a streamlined way of a thing that's always existed.

46:18

But there are some parents who are so worried about screens that I, you know, they're just

46:22

like, well, I really don't want my kid to really ever look at a screen.

46:25

And it's kind of like, well, that's ridiculous.

46:28

We live in a society that, yes.

46:30

And I was happy this movie, right, did not just charge at this as like, well, tech's

46:35

evil and kids should never like, yeah, you know, like, and like, it's a, right, it's

46:40

a war we're going to fight.

46:41

There's absolutely balance.

46:43

But I, as an adult, will say that I've not been participating in social media.

46:49

I know you were going to.

46:50

I don't know when I hit that point.

46:53

As we often would say, maybe the only person who knew how to do social media.

46:56

I would just check in from time to time.

46:59

But at this point, I just, yeah, I'm really off it.

47:03

It just makes me feel bad.

47:04

It is really funny that your Twitter profile picture is still a picture of your peer

47:08

steer.

47:09

That is, see this more sad.

47:10

I'm going to be keep on good at it.

47:13

And I also feel like too with just like the texting of it all and how that's become so

47:18

much more prevalent in our lives.

47:20

Yeah.

47:21

I struggle with it.

47:22

Yes.

47:23

I really do.

47:24

I do as well.

47:25

I find that it overwhelming.

47:27

And I find that lately I've been really struggling to even just keep up with it.

47:33

I like kind of just can't deal with this.

47:35

See, I enjoy texting because it's social.

47:38

So it kind of like it feeds my extrovert energy of like I like to have social contact.

47:42

I enjoy texting just fine.

47:45

I mostly use it to bully eight year olds, obviously.

47:47

So I see the movie resonated for me in that record.

47:49

If it's on the pond all the time, he's playing what's it called?

47:53

Frog Russia.

47:54

I can't say I remember.

47:55

Turtle Russia maybe.

47:56

Yeah.

47:57

Turtle.

47:58

So it was a tag or something.

47:59

There's something with Turtle.

48:00

Turtle Tag maybe.

48:01

Yeah.

48:02

You know, it's what they call frictionlessness, right?

48:05

Like it is bad.

48:06

Anything that's frictionless is increasingly just like this is a big thing in gambling, right?

48:11

It's like, it's different if you go to a place, you gamble some money like it's not like

48:17

we're not saying like that's that can be harmful and that can make people crazy.

48:20

But like if you can just kind of like bet a thousand dollars by going like, boop, like

48:25

it's a little too easy.

48:26

There's no friction.

48:27

And then suddenly you can get yourself very hooked very quickly by a colleague, Mike K.

48:31

He's got the thing that happens, you know, the Atlantic who is Mormon and thus banned

48:35

from gambling.

48:36

But a whole article about how basically the Atlantic were like, what if we steak do 10 grand

48:42

to see what happens if you start gambling on your phone?

48:46

Like just to explore like this new thing and he got fucking addicted.

48:50

Like, he's fine.

48:51

But like he writes about like, yeah, man, like very quickly, like I was like going to the

48:55

bathroom to check my phone to like, you know, like look at the day.

48:58

It's a serotonin hit.

48:59

Of course.

49:00

And it's too easy, too easy.

49:02

It doesn't feel real.

49:04

Obviously, right.

49:05

So especially with your kids, you worry about, you know, exposing it.

49:09

Yeah.

49:10

Yeah.

49:11

I think this movie has kind of the right balance of those things.

49:13

And I think a problem that the Toy Story franchise is always fighting against is that two,

49:20

which I like as much as any movie I've ever made, is reaches such a satisfying dramatic

49:26

point, which is Woody and Buzz have come to an understanding of their own inevitability.

49:31

Yes.

49:32

It's why three irritates me.

49:34

Yeah.

49:35

Two, and five, I think you will agree.

49:38

Basically has the same ending as two.

49:40

It's Jesse having the realization or whatever, but it's the same thing with the like, right.

49:45

I'm a toy.

49:46

Yeah.

49:47

Yes, your kid will grow up.

49:48

It's about the journey.

49:50

You know, that we all have to accept that and we're going to have a great time while

49:53

we're being played with.

49:54

And like that's what it's all about, baby.

49:56

And then of course three just makes the huge mistake of being like, in my opinion, the

50:00

huge mistake of being like, well, so much time has passed.

50:02

We should explore what happens when Andy is older and has to give away the toys.

50:06

And I'm like, I don't know or you could do what five does, where it's just like, I

50:09

don't know, and Bonnie's still a kid who cares.

50:12

Well, three, I think the thing I bump on in three is that it feels like, A, it's just

50:17

kind of taking subtext from the first movie, it first two movies and making a text.

50:21

And B, it is a lot of it's a double beat of one and two.

50:28

It's stuff that the characters have like come to understand, but now they're facing it.

50:33

And it's less interesting because they've already expressed their understanding of what's

50:36

coming for them.

50:38

And I know they've always said about three words like, well, but it's different to say

50:41

you understand what's happening and then to actually live through it.

50:44

They say in three, right?

50:45

That's like, that's like the line, right?

50:47

Right.

50:48

It's different in this and what I liked about it and I thought was a good distinction

50:51

is, Jesse's kind of crisis is, does it even matter?

50:56

It's not like, is it coming to an end because she has this thing of like, I've been through

51:01

two kids already.

51:02

I know that this ends.

51:04

What I'm questioning now is, it's less about, are we going to be thrown away and does

51:08

that make me feel useless?

51:10

It's more about whatever they sort of serve as an idea.

51:15

And this gets into the sort of stretchiness of the toy story metaphor of like, how are

51:19

toys supposed to help a kid?

51:21

She's like, are we oblivious and is this kid suffering?

51:24

And am I going to be forgotten?

51:25

And there's just like no impact.

51:28

And I think to a certain degree, I was saying to Ben, I think, you know, the toy story movies

51:32

change what they map onto.

51:36

What I like about toy stories is that they're always 50% literally just about what if you

51:40

were a toy.

51:42

I think exploring the internal logic of that and the comedic and the dramatic possibilities.

51:46

And then the other 50% and Jane Nicholson did a great video about this when toy story

51:50

four came out is they don't all ascribe to the same kind of map metaphor.

51:56

One is sort of about being a child, two is sort of about being a parent.

51:59

I think three is more about religion, four is about retirement.

52:02

I'm lost.

52:03

Three is about religion?

52:05

Well, I think it's about like the idea of reckoning with a god who is abandoned you,

52:10

but it's also about reincarnation and new ownership.

52:13

I thought it was a lot so it's like a cult.

52:15

Sure.

52:16

Okay.

52:17

I thought it was like a week.

52:18

It'd be cool if we did like a prison escape movie with toys.

52:21

But you know, that's the best stuff in the movie.

52:23

My problem with Pixar as I say in my review, it's not just toy stories inside out.

52:29

It's inside out in Toy Story, the biggest culprits.

52:32

There's other ones that I can do.

52:34

Is there like, well, this inanimate thing is alive and you should feel guilty that you're

52:40

killing them by ignoring them.

52:42

And like it's something I struggle with very much in the Toy Story movies.

52:45

And it's why I don't like the Jesse plot in two where she's like, I was abandoned by

52:49

my owner and I'm like, no, your owner grew up like a normal person and stopped using toys.

52:54

And Jesse's like, I was killed.

52:55

That can still traumatize.

52:56

I'm traumatized.

52:57

She's saying she's killed.

52:58

There's a difference between saying I'm traumatized because that hurt me and saying I was killed.

53:02

She's not killed.

53:04

The movie presented is a traumatic horrible thing that happens to her when toys leave her

53:09

like dresser and she has normal things teenage girls have clothes and makeup and things.

53:15

And the movie just I have always I ran to about this on the page.

53:18

It irks me.

53:19

It really drives me crazy.

53:21

I think we're just hearing a lot of guilt you have.

53:23

I don't have any unprocessed guilt.

53:24

I mean, what a guilty man.

53:26

Obviously, the most audacious thing the average was inside out where they're like, when you

53:29

forget about an imaginary friend you had when you were a kid, that's murder.

53:33

He's dead.

53:34

He's just like, I'm sorry.

53:36

I didn't realize he had feelings.

53:40

I have the exact opposite read of these things, which is I think they're about the sort

53:45

of existential dread of being in a universe that doesn't consider that you have consciousness.

53:52

And so these things are not being done to you in a way that is hurtful.

53:55

These things are being done to you out of like obliviousness.

53:58

But it's not real.

54:00

I think there's, I know these aren't real.

54:03

It's a dramatic, there's a nice sentimentality.

54:06

There should be.

54:07

There should be.

54:08

Well, it should be.

54:09

Right.

54:10

But then like Jesse's like, I can't do it.

54:12

You know, like we're in here like, right, she's like a whole person.

54:15

And that's why I like for because it's kind of about like, should we reckon with that these

54:19

are conscious beings?

54:20

Yeah.

54:21

But that's, I assume also why fans got mad at it where it's like, well, now we're just

54:25

sort of breaking the convention because it's like, what now would he can just kind of

54:29

live where he wants?

54:30

But that's the distinction to me.

54:31

Even a toy?

54:32

I feel like what you're describing falls a little more into velveteen rabbit territory,

54:36

which is like, right, right, right, the ultimate original real trait.

54:40

Right.

54:41

Like you're just teaching your child like, right, when you stop loving your toy, like

54:44

it's sad.

54:45

You literally killed him.

54:46

He's thrown on the fire because you infected him with your human sickness, right?

54:51

Like that's, that's what that is.

54:53

I'll never read my good that fucking evil book.

54:55

I'll say, yeah, bud.

54:56

What I've always loved about toy story is, right, there, that's, that's the metaphorical

55:00

element where you're sort of discussing, right, and how it relates to like the human

55:03

condition.

55:04

And then the other 50% of it is quietly this sort of bizarre sci-fi premise, which I like.

55:10

Why are they alive?

55:11

What is it?

55:12

What's the outer boundary?

55:15

Are they?

55:16

Immortal?

55:17

Like, they don't need food or air.

55:19

No.

55:20

But they can be destroyed.

55:22

Yes.

55:23

Like, and then they're dead.

55:25

Right.

55:26

I guess they're destroyed.

55:28

I think it's, and also if you put them in a box, they're sort of like, they're

55:30

not quite dead, but they seem to basically kind of, there's also the forky of it all,

55:34

where, and then forky of the greatest character of all, if you are played with.

55:40

Like, he's made by a child and he is the child's plaything.

55:43

So thus, he is cursed with consciousness.

55:46

Right.

55:47

Like, you know, and, you know, I love forky.

55:50

So he's like, I reject consciousness.

55:52

I wish to be trash.

55:53

I'm trash.

55:54

Right.

55:55

Trash is warm, trash is safe.

55:56

I'm wearing, I'm wearing a forky t-shirt that says love is trash, which is, of course,

55:59

against the message of this movie, which is forky is happily married, although, of course,

56:04

there are struggles in a relationship.

56:05

There are, although, like, to forky trash is good.

56:08

So maybe love is trash is a positive message for him.

56:11

You know what?

56:12

You're right.

56:13

That's a very positive read on my T-shirt.

56:14

Right, like, he likes trash.

56:15

Yeah, he's protract, he is trash.

56:16

He's made of trash.

56:17

He's made of trash, he's protract, his wife is trash.

56:19

I have a question for you, Griffin, because,

56:21

Please, just wait for me again.

56:22

Karen Beverly, duh.

56:24

This is the great bit, is that forky is, of course, a spork.

56:27

Yes.

56:28

They made him, they designed him, they showed him to the

56:29

child of a Pixar employee and they said, what would you name this character?

56:33

And the child said forky.

56:34

And they went, it's funnier that the kid gets the utensil wrong, right?

56:38

Of course.

56:39

And then they similarly designed Karen Beverly and they went, this kid's going to name

56:42

her Nifey.

56:43

And they said, what's her name?

56:44

And the kid said Karen Beverly.

56:46

Pretty fun.

56:47

So that's why that is the line of a kid.

56:49

Go with the logic of what an actual kid would do, don't explain it.

56:52

Absolutely.

56:53

Forky, so you had, like, a list of topics you want to do address on this episode.

56:57

One of which was forky status as a gay icon was in this business.

57:00

Forky has become a queer icon.

57:01

There's a lot of, there's a lot of forky pride stuff.

57:04

These, that's so, which I've been fascinated by.

57:05

You're sure that says love is trash has a big rainbow on it.

57:08

So he's got a rainbow on his foot.

57:10

Oh, you're right.

57:11

There's a rainbow sticker on his foot.

57:13

That's why forky.

57:14

This is what I'm trying to figure out because LGBTQ fork icon, there is so much forky pride

57:18

merch.

57:19

And it's not just forky with a rainbow on its foot.

57:22

It's like forky holding a pride flag.

57:24

This is what I'm trying to figure out because it's like it's just the boba duke where

57:27

they were just kind of like, I don't know, we just decided.

57:30

He's our claim him.

57:31

He's speaking to the culture in some way and speaking of cultures and respectful relationships

57:36

to cultures through the toy store franchise.

57:39

Yes.

57:40

Marie, of course, on her trip to Japan got for me one of my grails.

57:43

Samurai Woody the cowboy, which has been house on his desk.

57:47

You've been added to.

57:48

And we're going to pull the string, which I promise them is not offensive.

57:51

Yeah.

57:52

Okay.

57:53

He said something in Japanese.

57:56

He did.

57:57

Do we know that is he saying like, well, that's not a samurai effect.

58:04

I was.

58:05

I'm sort of out of breath on that one.

58:09

That's very Tom Hanks.

58:10

Is he saying the classic Woody phrases or is he saying something completely different?

58:14

I guess that's my question.

58:15

I don't know.

58:16

Richard the sky.

58:17

Samurai sword.

58:18

Right.

58:19

I don't know if anyone, if anyone, if anyone listeners, like is he saying there's a snake

58:22

in my boot.

58:23

What I should I should record these and send them to wiger and get him to translate.

58:27

And wiger speak Japanese.

58:28

He's a Japanese job.

58:29

We found this out recently.

58:30

Wait, what?

58:31

When wiger went to Japan, he's like, of course, I'm bilingual.

58:33

For him?

58:34

Yeah.

58:35

Yeah.

58:36

You're my favorite deputy.

58:40

Hey, buddy, it's wiger.

58:43

Thanks to Griffin for the shout out.

58:45

I don't want to overstate my proficiency with the Japanese language, but I have been learning

58:52

and I, a big part of that has been my studies with my tutor.

58:57

So because my tutor is also a professional translator, I figured we just throw her into

59:03

the mix and see if she can help us puzzle these out.

59:06

Konichiwa Tanaka Sensei.

59:08

Konichiwa.

59:10

So are you familiar with the Toy Story franchise?

59:12

Oh, yeah, I see this.

59:14

Yes.

59:15

Did you see Toy Story 5, the most recent entry?

59:18

No, yeah.

59:19

You, of course, know Woody, the cowboy, the protagonist of this series.

59:24

Yes.

59:25

There is a samurai Woody toy and it has some lines of dialogue.

59:31

And so I'm going to play these for you one at a time.

59:33

Okay.

59:34

And then if you can just talk them through what your translation might be.

59:40

Okay.

59:41

So here we go.

59:43

He said,

59:47

Choto mata, oi, yamero, choto is little.

59:52

Mata, wait.

59:55

Yamero, stop it.

59:58

So he say, wait a little stop.

1:00:01

Got it.

1:00:02

Yes.

1:00:03

Would you have any idea with the content?

1:00:05

Is that a common Japanese phrase you might say?

1:00:08

I wouldn't say because it's masculine.

1:00:12

Yamero, when do I say that?

1:00:15

Can you stop if somebody was, I don't know, play my hair or something?

1:00:21

I don't know.

1:00:22

Oh, so I wonder if what's happening is that's Woody the doll kind of being like, hey,

1:00:26

stop pulling my string.

1:00:27

Something.

1:00:28

Do you think it's maybe, okay, so that's a little bit of a fourth wall breaky there.

1:00:33

And directly addressing the person playing with the doll as if they are the toy.

1:00:39

Maybe.

1:00:40

Okay.

1:00:41

All right.

1:00:42

Next up, let's listen to this one.

1:00:44

And again, it's the samurai Woody.

1:00:49

So we have that little sword clash at the end.

1:00:52

Yes.

1:00:53

He said,

1:00:54

So this is like, this is like, bullseye run like the wind is like, that's like his, he's,

1:01:08

he's right like the wind.

1:01:09

I guess his way is what they would do it say in English.

1:01:12

Yes.

1:01:13

So this is like the thing he would say to his horse.

1:01:14

And this is a Woody catch phrase.

1:01:17

You know the horse bullseye.

1:01:19

He's in, he's a, he appears in the second one when Woody has a bunch of addition.

1:01:23

Right.

1:01:24

Ah, I see.

1:01:25

That's unnecessary context, but there you go.

1:01:27

Okay.

1:01:28

All right, let's see, let's see what this third one is.

1:01:32

Okay, what is being said there?

1:01:36

Okay, so again, scolding the person, pulling his string.

1:01:53

He's telling somebody to stop something, whatever they are doing.

1:01:56

There again, it's directly addressing the kid, which you would not do unless you were trying to scare them.

1:02:01

Um, yummy. If you're samurai, I don't know. Yeah, that sounds...

1:02:06

The point is it doesn't feel samurai-specific, right?

1:02:09

Yeah, it doesn't have a samurai spirit in it.

1:02:11

Okay, all right. We got one more.

1:02:14

He said you beat me.

1:02:19

He said you beat me.

1:02:21

Uh, he said you beat me.

1:02:23

You used a dirty hand.

1:02:27

So he did it.

1:02:28

You used a dirty hand? Wait, does it mean a literal dirty hand?

1:02:31

Like the child is selfie?

1:02:33

No, like a...

1:02:35

You know when you compete, you do a right?

1:02:38

And sometimes they cheat.

1:02:40

Uh-oh, okay.

1:02:41

It's like whoever was doing something to Udi was using like a cheating.

1:02:47

Like a dirty trick.

1:02:49

Yeah.

1:02:50

My, my, my, my saying English got a good...

1:02:52

Yeah, this is a kid story though.

1:02:53

This is a child's toy.

1:02:55

I mean, perhaps the samurai-faming is meant to age it up a little bit, but I don't know.

1:02:59

It, it seems, it seems like only one of these is at all specific to Udi as we know him,

1:03:05

which is his ride like the wind line.

1:03:08

Wait, Toy Story 5 was shot in Japan?

1:03:11

No, it's, there's not really a Japanese connection.

1:03:14

It's just, this toy just happens to exist.

1:03:17

Oh, got it.

1:03:18

Well, I go, thank you so much.

1:03:20

Uh, before we, uh, before we go, I, I, I did want to add.

1:03:23

This is a movie podcast.

1:03:25

Um, and you are, in addition to being a, a translator and an excellent teacher,

1:03:29

you are an actor and a comedian.

1:03:31

And in fact, you played one of the cowgirls at the starting line in the film,

1:03:36

the fast and the furious Tokyo drift.

1:03:39

Yes.

1:03:40

Your line was seto, is it?

1:03:42

Yeah, so, uh, we supposed to start the race.

1:03:45

Yeah.

1:03:46

Somebody else says, my friend Kyla says, very, I says, seto, another person said, go,

1:03:51

because as you know, in Japanese, it's seto.

1:03:54

We have to announce it about, but people are complaining.

1:03:58

They're like, she's saying set, go, she's saying it wrong.

1:04:01

I'm like, I don't think Universal Studio would publish the movie with my, you know,

1:04:05

right?

1:04:06

Yeah, but I lost the voice.

1:04:08

I don't think my voice was, I think they might have done a D.R.

1:04:12

Got it.

1:04:13

Because I lost the voice because so much.

1:04:15

Fume and gas.

1:04:17

Do you have any, any, any specific story you remember from your time?

1:04:21

Uh, because you have a, you're, you have a couple of scenes.

1:04:23

One of them is with Vin Diesel.

1:04:24

I'm not sure if he was actually there.

1:04:26

I was with, um, uh, this, uh, rapper actor, little bow.

1:04:34

Wow.

1:04:35

Yes, yeah.

1:04:36

And he's my size, but he was so popular.

1:04:40

Like all these women were around him.

1:04:44

So I was really shocked by that.

1:04:46

Like a short king.

1:04:49

He's a short king and he was just so popular.

1:04:52

So shocked.

1:04:54

Like toy story, a franchise that will be around for a long time.

1:04:58

Uh, I go, thank you so much.

1:05:00

Uh, uh, how do you get it?

1:05:02

I'm sorry.

1:05:03

Uh, uh, uh, I guess I'm sorry.

1:05:05

Uh, there you go.

1:05:12

Not really very illuminating clips don't seem to be in character for Woody and frankly,

1:05:17

don't make a lot of sense.

1:05:19

I seem to mostly be scolding children for playing with a toy, um, improperly.

1:05:26

Um, anyway, my review of toy story five, uh, Bonnie's mom thicker than a hand spun milkshake.

1:05:31

Bye, buddy.

1:05:32

There's a snake in my boot.

1:05:36

It's many mysteries to that man.

1:05:38

The greatest man there ever was.

1:05:41

Yeah.

1:05:42

Number one person tied with my grandchildren.

1:05:44

Sure.

1:05:45

Of course, let's not forget.

1:05:46

He's going to be Mike.

1:05:47

Mitch is going to be so angry about the three seconds where we said,

1:05:49

why go was number one?

1:05:50

Luckily, he never.

1:05:51

Does Mike does.

1:05:52

Does.

1:05:53

Does.

1:05:54

I know.

1:05:55

Any other languages besides English.

1:05:56

Uh, Boston.

1:05:57

Boston.

1:05:58

Yeah.

1:05:59

Yeah.

1:06:00

No, I couldn't think of a better job.

1:06:01

Yeah.

1:06:02

Okay.

1:06:03

So this movie, the plot, what are the, it opens.

1:06:04

I love the opening of this film.

1:06:06

It opens with, uh, uh, desert island.

1:06:10

Yeah.

1:06:11

That's right.

1:06:12

Forget about that.

1:06:13

First person POV inside the bus like your helmet.

1:06:15

Cargo.

1:06:16

Uh, right.

1:06:17

Okay.

1:06:18

You, you scan the wreckage.

1:06:19

You hear the breathing.

1:06:20

It's similar to buzzes awakening in the first toy story.

1:06:23

Right.

1:06:24

But then you see, right, like a cargo ship that's turned over.

1:06:27

The beach is littered with buzz light years and they all start to turn on and activate.

1:06:31

And these are the new high tech buzzes.

1:06:33

Right.

1:06:34

These are Wi-Fi enabled buzzes that look very much like the original buzz but have kind of a

1:06:39

kind of a game job.

1:06:40

And they've got a device in their chest.

1:06:42

They're simple glows.

1:06:43

Yeah.

1:06:44

They're in the little screen.

1:06:45

They have everything's got the internet kind of screen.

1:06:48

And they function as like, I don't know, they are lesion.

1:06:52

They are like a hive mind.

1:06:53

They have a high.

1:06:54

A horrible situation.

1:06:55

And you just have this thing of all of them like waking up and waking each other up like very

1:07:00

lost post crash.

1:07:01

Like, are you okay?

1:07:03

They don't really have language yet.

1:07:05

No, they don't speak.

1:07:06

It cuts to them at night.

1:07:08

Like, this is already a surprising cut to just be like, where are we in this?

1:07:12

How much of this were you prepared for?

1:07:13

Because I assume you've been, you've been scanning the lead with rumors.

1:07:17

Yeah.

1:07:18

Yeah.

1:07:19

Yeah.

1:07:20

Yeah.

1:07:21

And I believe they screened this opening at Cinemacon last year.

1:07:24

Like they had this done.

1:07:25

Sure.

1:07:26

And so a year ago, there were some stories that were people like the opening of Toy Story

1:07:29

5 is really bizarre.

1:07:30

Right.

1:07:31

I'm curious to see what this movie is now because I was not expecting this.

1:07:35

It's an MMA fight.

1:07:36

Yeah.

1:07:37

And not MMA.

1:07:38

Sorry, wrestling.

1:07:39

It starts with an AW wrestler tricking.

1:07:41

Yeah.

1:07:42

I want to say someone in the reddit because I made-

1:07:44

I'm like, I'm just watching Ben fix, Samurai Woody.

1:07:46

Yeah.

1:07:47

Marie Cawdby.

1:07:48

He's like, he's trying to make sure he's really okay.

1:07:50

He's really really looking at him.

1:07:51

Like he's a little person.

1:07:52

And I'm like, you know what?

1:07:53

Ben's glowing.

1:07:54

Sweetie.

1:07:55

Look at that.

1:07:56

What was the thing I was going to say?

1:08:00

Oh, people were calling out that I said AEW instead of WWE in the disclosure day episode.

1:08:05

Sure.

1:08:06

And they were like calling it up positively.

1:08:08

No, just that I used a different specific that I didn't go for the most obvious wrestling

1:08:12

league.

1:08:13

Yeah.

1:08:14

And they said, like, how funny would it be if Griffin got really into wrestling and went

1:08:17

to the AEW all or nothing?

1:08:18

I want people to know.

1:08:19

You went?

1:08:20

I fucking went.

1:08:21

You went with the singer, right?

1:08:22

I went with Matt Singer, Brendan McDonald, Friends at the show.

1:08:25

They took me to my first ever wrestling event.

1:08:27

It was really fun.

1:08:28

And I sat next to a blankie who bought me drinks in a t-shirt.

1:08:31

I just want people to know.

1:08:32

Well, I had a great fucking time and I like orange Cassidy.

1:08:35

Is this going to be your sport now?

1:08:37

I feel like you've always had a little closer to the theater.

1:08:40

It's a closer to the theater.

1:08:41

It is.

1:08:42

Right.

1:08:43

And that's why.

1:08:44

It's sketch comedy.

1:08:45

Let's call it what it is.

1:08:46

Athletics, sketch comedy.

1:08:47

It's very athletic.

1:08:48

It's like it's a crazy stunts and you know orange Cassidy's bit is that he's a guy who's

1:08:52

sort of like too cool to wrestle.

1:08:54

So he shows up wearing a Canadian tuxedo in sunglasses.

1:08:57

His hands in his pockets and he does crazy moves refusing to take his hands out of his pockets

1:09:02

because he doesn't want to show any effort.

1:09:05

It's a pretty funny bit.

1:09:08

Buzz Lightyears all make a campsite.

1:09:10

They make a fire.

1:09:11

Then they look up at the night sky.

1:09:13

They see stars and they start remembering star command.

1:09:16

I think this is such a good bit that the movie finds a way to like exploit like seven

1:09:22

different ways across the run time.

1:09:23

I just feel like they could shout it out light ear more.

1:09:26

Yeah, it's an important movie.

1:09:27

It's part of the canon.

1:09:28

But David, these are the toys, not the man that the toys are based on.

1:09:32

I'm just waiting light ear too.

1:09:34

Do you know?

1:09:35

Do you know?

1:09:36

I have it on good authority that they had a trilogy planned.

1:09:38

Of course they did.

1:09:39

I mean, that makes sense.

1:09:40

I'm sure they thought it was going to be a big deal.

1:09:42

And the second movie we add the aliens.

1:09:44

Right.

1:09:46

It's like the big.

1:09:47

The clock.

1:09:48

Are the aliens not in this one?

1:09:49

The first time I saw it, I thought they were not in it at all.

1:09:52

And this time I look there in some of the group shots early, but they're like, even

1:09:57

when they go to the garage, they're not in the box.

1:10:00

Yeah.

1:10:01

Yeah.

1:10:02

They've had their time.

1:10:03

It's cool how the buzzes are able to climb up the crane by like climbing on a

1:10:07

Saturday.

1:10:08

Yeah.

1:10:09

I love seeing the action of these new buzzes.

1:10:13

I like that.

1:10:14

Yes.

1:10:15

They can sort of form like larger shapes and things.

1:10:17

I was a little afraid of them.

1:10:20

I think they're too powerful.

1:10:22

Yeah.

1:10:23

Sure.

1:10:24

Let's stop them.

1:10:25

Yeah.

1:10:26

I think we need to stop them.

1:10:27

I think they can be weaponized.

1:10:28

They're drones.

1:10:29

Well, I think the limitless, like you can't hurt.

1:10:32

You'll hurt yourself thinking about it.

1:10:34

These toys have access to the internet now.

1:10:36

They're sentient beings.

1:10:38

They seemingly can do all kinds of things online without a snowing.

1:10:41

Wait.

1:10:42

Did I get it commenting?

1:10:43

Well, this is the thing I actually discussed this with someone.

1:10:46

Yeah.

1:10:47

And I was like, it's something movie doesn't want to deal with and that's fine.

1:10:50

But I was like, if toys were talking to each other on the internet as they basically

1:10:55

do in this, that's actually creating a paper trail, which I feel like kind of violates

1:11:00

there.

1:11:01

We can't be seen being alive.

1:11:04

It's like at a certain point, the government might kind of be like, hey, like there's

1:11:09

like five other beings.

1:11:11

Just talking on these apps, like what is this?

1:11:15

But that's already started in three.

1:11:17

I mean, Trixi, the Kristen Shaw character does have a texting relationship with other

1:11:21

toys.

1:11:22

Yeah.

1:11:23

She's emailing at least.

1:11:24

Yeah.

1:11:25

Trixi, I feel is the most Marie like of all of the characters.

1:11:29

Absolutely.

1:11:30

She doesn't really, she has like a line in this maybe.

1:11:32

She's got a couple jokes.

1:11:33

She does.

1:11:34

Like Jeff Garland's character is silenced on surprise.

1:11:36

He is still dead.

1:11:37

He is still dead.

1:11:38

He is silenced for speaking the truth on how he wanted to hook people as well or whatever

1:11:42

it is he did.

1:11:43

He kept saying, ow, my vagina on set.

1:11:46

That was his joke.

1:11:47

Um, who do you relate to the most?

1:11:50

Uh, Rex.

1:11:51

No.

1:11:52

No, well in the early films, it was Jesse and then Forky.

1:11:56

I unsurprisingly really very hard.

1:11:58

My face when I learned Jeff Garland was not going to voice anyone into this movie.

1:12:02

What is it that you're showing?

1:12:04

The uncanny valley.

1:12:05

They made like a CGI Jeff Garland for like the finale of the Goldbergs because they'd

1:12:11

already fired him, but like they didn't want to like kill the dad off.

1:12:14

I think they did.

1:12:15

Am I wrong in thinking they did one season post his death, like post the character death.

1:12:20

I don't think but that was to finish off the season they already had shot.

1:12:23

I'm not even sure that he died though.

1:12:25

Did they just kind of like, you know, say like he's on vacation.

1:12:29

My memory is that they've not in.

1:12:31

Let me see.

1:12:32

Yes.

1:12:33

Yes.

1:12:34

Yeah, but he was used for a graduation episode in season nine.

1:12:38

Right.

1:12:39

And they had fired.

1:12:40

There was a season 10 where Wendy McClub and Kovie got like a big pay raise.

1:12:44

It deservedly so.

1:12:45

It's so funny because he became the only parent.

1:12:48

But now show us your impression.

1:12:50

You're about to go into it.

1:12:51

Yeah, Marie, can you take a picture of this?

1:12:54

Uh, no, he's not facing me.

1:12:56

You got to face me.

1:12:57

Um, basically he was so annoying and would just make hypersexual jokes all the time to

1:13:02

the cast and crew that for years, they built.

1:13:04

What are you getting?

1:13:05

It's funny.

1:13:06

For years, they did a thing where they basically would shoot him out of every episode in one

1:13:11

day, isolated from most other actors.

1:13:14

And then finally it got like that's too extreme, but they had a bunch of episodes that already

1:13:18

had been written with the assumption they'd get the one day out of him for the end of

1:13:22

that season.

1:13:23

So they finished it with weird CGI.

1:13:25

And I think they threw in some outtakes and some whatever, you know, like they did with

1:13:29

the patching together.

1:13:30

Um, he doesn't talk in this.

1:13:31

Uh, the potato heads have been recast.

1:13:34

They also only have a couple lines.

1:13:36

I think this is kind of smart.

1:13:37

And I heard Stanton and Harris talk about this where they were like, the cast has gotten

1:13:41

too big.

1:13:42

It's an embarrassment of riches.

1:13:43

Sure.

1:13:44

Anytime we cut to the Bonnie's room, we try to put them all in the same frame so you can

1:13:48

at least see everyone.

1:13:49

Yeah.

1:13:50

But like realistically, everyone's getting three lines in this movie outside of our main

1:13:53

cast.

1:13:54

Totally.

1:13:55

Who do you relate to or who do you feel like you are in this universe?

1:13:59

Uh, you are so neat.

1:14:01

You're so cute.

1:14:02

I'm fucking.

1:14:03

It is survivor.

1:14:04

Uh, Griff here at the Toy Story expert here.

1:14:07

Is there a, is there a David coded Toy Story character?

1:14:10

Uh, I'm not saying I'm not thinking too hard about sometimes that potato head.

1:14:14

I was going to say potato head.

1:14:15

I'm very fond.

1:14:16

I'm a married spot.

1:14:17

He's too grumpy.

1:14:18

I actually like potato head in the early movies.

1:14:21

I'm kind of like, can you fucking roll axles?

1:14:23

Well, he's always so young.

1:14:25

He's a roast.

1:14:26

He's sure he loves his wife.

1:14:28

He does.

1:14:29

He's got three children.

1:14:30

Yes.

1:14:31

The monkeys.

1:14:32

The monkeys are in his butt.

1:14:33

The monkeys are in his butt.

1:14:34

Uh, you're also a little bit of ham, I think.

1:14:38

Sure.

1:14:39

Ham know it all.

1:14:40

Ham in those early movies is also kind of just like kind of an ombudsman type.

1:14:46

Like he's always kind of in the mix and organizing and stuff.

1:14:49

I don't know.

1:14:50

Bradson burger was always of course the Pixar Good Luck charm.

1:14:52

He was in every film.

1:14:53

And then since Lasseter was outstead, he stopped doing them.

1:14:57

Sure.

1:14:58

I did notice that his billing is very low on this movie.

1:15:01

Does he have a line?

1:15:02

Ham says something.

1:15:03

He says a couple things.

1:15:04

And I was like, that's really similar to a joke from three or that's really similar

1:15:07

to joke from four.

1:15:08

I'm wondering if Don Rickles style they did just use outtakes for him on this one and pay

1:15:13

him.

1:15:14

Interesting.

1:15:15

And he wouldn't come in.

1:15:16

It's pure speculation on my part.

1:15:17

But I noticed that the the billing order of the end credits was not alphabetical and he

1:15:22

was all the way down at the bottom.

1:15:24

Yeah.

1:15:25

Well, he noticed.

1:15:26

He noticed some bluth over here.

1:15:27

Yes.

1:15:28

Did you make a post on the toy story right at about this?

1:15:30

No, I refused to engage with that place.

1:15:32

Good for you.

1:15:33

It's a place for heathens and maniacs.

1:15:35

I'm Duke Kaboom.

1:15:38

You are not Duke Kaboom.

1:15:40

You're not Duke Kaboom.

1:15:41

Why not?

1:15:42

Because Duke Kaboom is like a failure with an inflated ego, you know?

1:15:46

Yeah, but he's, you know, he's come low and he's come, I guess I'm not really good for

1:15:50

rules.

1:15:51

He's great character.

1:15:52

He's great character.

1:15:53

He's great character.

1:15:54

He's great character.

1:15:55

Okay.

1:15:56

I'm just trying to think your characters.

1:15:57

I'm the doll from four.

1:15:58

What's your name?

1:15:59

Dollies.

1:16:00

You are kind of guy, yeah.

1:16:01

You're a hangar girl.

1:16:03

You're a hangar girl.

1:16:04

She's kind of like lost in her, like, like, she's never been able to escape high school

1:16:09

even a way.

1:16:10

Yeah, like, she's just kind of watching the map top.

1:16:14

Yeah, love the math.

1:16:16

Like, one of us must, I beat the Phillies.

1:16:18

David's wearing that, I don't care about the Phillies.

1:16:21

Yeah.

1:16:22

Let's go, Matt.

1:16:23

Hey, just to finish this, uh, uh, loop, Timothy Dalton, not back as prickly, and

1:16:29

he's who gets a couple of pictures.

1:16:30

Oh, really?

1:16:31

I didn't notice that.

1:16:32

Was he not in for either?

1:16:33

I feel like he had to be part of the role already.

1:16:35

He was in for an in toy story of terror.

1:16:38

He, someone else voiced the character for Forky asked a question, and it's a different

1:16:42

guy who's doing it for this.

1:16:44

Right.

1:16:45

And I looked up this guy and I was like, what do I know this guy from?

1:16:47

And the answer is he played Jeffrey Epstein in the Netflix movie about the Prince Andrew

1:16:52

interview, which is when I watched that film, it's a non-speaking role.

1:16:57

I was like, this is the worst role you could ever have as an actor.

1:17:00

You are just physical double for Jeffrey Epstein in close-ups, non-speaking, walking through

1:17:07

central park with Prince Andrew.

1:17:08

Can I just read a great, um, great Ben Halsley tweet out?

1:17:12

Please.

1:17:13

I've just been scrolling through some of our finest.

1:17:16

This is from April 2021.

1:17:18

Uh-huh.

1:17:19

Vanity license plate that says Fang.

1:17:21

Oh, God.

1:17:22

He's so, he never misses.

1:17:25

We're so lucky to have him.

1:17:28

And he never misses.

1:17:30

Ben, can you talk about some of the things you liked about this movie?

1:17:34

Because I feel like you, you were surprised by how pro you were.

1:17:37

Great jokes.

1:17:38

I thought this was really funny.

1:17:42

The parents win Bonnie and Blazer finally connecting towards the end and the parents are

1:17:48

watching.

1:17:49

And when they start to come in, they're like, get out of here.

1:17:52

Like normal.

1:17:53

This is Ben's favorite moment.

1:17:54

He like, he did the Leo point at the screen last night when it happened.

1:17:57

Like it's your favorite part.

1:17:59

Well, we should know, I know that feeling a little bit when you're like, when I brought

1:18:03

my daughter over to someone's house for a play date and you are kind of doing the like,

1:18:07

it's like, we're introducing the fish to a new, you know, tank and we'll see if she

1:18:11

can thrive or you know, where you just they kind of just like run off to their room

1:18:15

and you're like, good, good, great, great, great, great.

1:18:17

Like they're doing it.

1:18:18

They're doing it.

1:18:19

Okay.

1:18:21

Yeah, your daughter does say I, my daughter does say I, my daughter says that too.

1:18:25

Yeah.

1:18:26

Yeah.

1:18:27

Our daughters have that in common.

1:18:28

When we go to Bonnie's room, we open with the wedding being staged, I feel like, or

1:18:35

very quickly get to that.

1:18:36

Forking Karen Beverly or getting the trod, Bonnie's in a phase where she just wants to watch

1:18:40

marriages all the time.

1:18:41

You're reading another Ben tree.

1:18:42

So good.

1:18:43

I ate too many pasta and my app is small.

1:18:47

I don't know what that means.

1:18:49

What is March 13th, 2020?

1:18:51

So it's right before lockdown.

1:18:53

Maybe you're just kind of like, you know, exploring like what it felt like to kind of be

1:18:58

carb, maxing and not being able to go out.

1:19:00

My app is small apartment.

1:19:02

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:19:04

Okay.

1:19:05

Feathers are bone hair, right?

1:19:07

That's a, that, that, that, that, that's just what's bouncing around that.

1:19:10

Not going to hit all the time.

1:19:12

What a brain.

1:19:13

Feathers are bone hair.

1:19:15

Bonnie's in the stage where she's really enjoying putting on fake weddings.

1:19:21

And so forking and Karen Beverly or getting married, which is the thing the movie treats

1:19:25

as if Bonnie gives you a wedding, then that counts.

1:19:28

It's legally binding, but also a prickle pants.

1:19:31

If he's officiating, it's legally binding because there was one playtime where he was

1:19:35

a haunted priest, I think, or a haunted reverberation.

1:19:38

He's ordained.

1:19:39

Right.

1:19:40

Yes.

1:19:41

Right.

1:19:42

And the, the, the sweet Bonnie vision to the, you know, it's very like it's like kind

1:19:48

of pastel.

1:19:49

I was going to hold in book style, which I really, I thought it was clever because like we

1:19:53

never gone into playtime vision in this kind of way.

1:19:56

No, because in, in two UC Andes, is it two or three?

1:19:59

No, it's three that begins with the train creation of, of play from prior toy stories.

1:20:04

Yes.

1:20:05

But it just looks like an epic movie.

1:20:06

It doesn't have like a style beyond the style we know.

1:20:09

And I would say that's, that's what we've done.

1:20:11

Like, if you go to play the bus video game and two is like, you know, it just looks like

1:20:17

toy story.

1:20:18

I think this is like a really, really cool visual choice.

1:20:22

And I like that it's always a murder mystery that they imply that there's always a who

1:20:25

poisoned blank to these wedding so accurate.

1:20:29

Yes.

1:20:30

To my playtime as a child.

1:20:31

Oh, I thought you were going to say to your wedding.

1:20:33

Well, no, but no one died.

1:20:36

But it was always like soap opera level.

1:20:39

Sure.

1:20:40

Like, people were having affairs.

1:20:43

There were weddings.

1:20:44

There were secret children.

1:20:46

This is a big thing about Bonnie.

1:20:47

There were murder.

1:20:49

The problem with Andy that gets exposed more and more as we're deeper into the Bonnie

1:20:53

verse is that Andy is incredibly non-specific.

1:20:57

Beyond just how creepy he looks as like an early CGI human.

1:21:01

He does look awful.

1:21:02

It is like the Pixar people all had children who weren't yet at this age.

1:21:06

Yeah, I mean, Andy likes cowboy because he like Woody.

1:21:09

So he wears a cowboy hat and then he like goes to the cowboy like buzz.

1:21:12

So he wear a helmet.

1:21:13

I'm going to read another Ben Tweet.

1:21:14

Okay.

1:21:15

Good.

1:21:16

November 2019.

1:21:17

I hope the Star Wars universe reveals the chocolate planet.

1:21:21

This is what's incredible.

1:21:22

They're all good.

1:21:23

Ben would just sit down and just spit out a thought like that.

1:21:27

And he would, you know, every few weeks like he would, you know, he would take his time.

1:21:30

Yeah.

1:21:31

Yeah.

1:21:32

Yeah.

1:21:33

I always had the tone of imagining Ben just sitting in his study stroking his chin and then

1:21:38

going, huh?

1:21:39

And then sharing this misive with the world.

1:21:42

You know that like, Giff was like a guy with like a quill.

1:21:45

Yes.

1:21:46

And it like is on fire because he's not the right.

1:21:48

It's so fire.

1:21:49

I was like, everyone of Ben's tweets.

1:21:51

All of Ben's tweets feel like they were written in ink with a feather.

1:21:54

Yeah.

1:21:55

100%.

1:21:56

Or I'm sorry, a bone hair.

1:21:57

Right.

1:21:58

Right.

1:21:59

Right.

1:22:00

Yeah.

1:22:04

This episode is brought to you by Facebook.

1:22:09

So you were scrolling on marketplace and there it was.

1:22:12

The bike you've been searching for, you sent a message and it turned out the seller was

1:22:17

super chatty, kind of funny and an avid cyclist.

1:22:20

The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew, well, a community cycling group.

1:22:26

The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for.

1:22:31

This summer, find more on Facebook.

1:22:37

Hey, it's Kelly Rowland.

1:22:38

You may not know this, but I have Exama.

1:22:41

So I get how it can steal your time.

1:22:43

But why let Exama take over when you can talk to your doctor about Epglis?

1:22:47

Epglis, lubricism app, LBKZ.

1:22:49

A 250-mg per 2-mg leader injection is a prescription medicine used to treat adults and children 12

1:22:55

years of age and older, who weigh at least 88 pounds or 40 kilograms with moderate to severe

1:22:59

Exama.

1:23:00

Also called a topic dermatitis that is not well controlled with prescription therapies

1:23:04

used on the skin or topicals or who cannot use topical therapies.

1:23:07

Epglis can be used with or without topical corticosteroids.

1:23:10

Don't use if you are allergic to Epglis.

1:23:12

Allergic reactions can occur that can be severe.

1:23:14

I-problems can occur.

1:23:15

Tell your doctor if you have newer, worsening eye problems.

1:23:18

You should not receive a live vaccine when treated with Epglis.

1:23:21

Before starting Epglis, tell your doctor if you have a parasitic infection.

1:23:24

Any partnership with Lily?

1:23:25

Respect your time.

1:23:26

Ask your doctor about Epglis and visit Epglis.com or call 1-800-LilyRX or 1-800-545-5979.

1:23:34

Okay, so what's happening?

1:23:44

You have a forkie, is married.

1:23:46

You know, I love forkie so much, but you know, relegated to minor care.

1:23:50

It's good jokes.

1:23:51

It's a couple of times.

1:23:52

I have no offense at this.

1:23:53

I'm not defensive about it.

1:23:54

I think he gets good stuff to do.

1:23:56

Forking how to movie.

1:23:57

He had a movie, exactly.

1:23:58

And I think this movie very smartly is like, let's really lock in on four kind of main

1:24:03

characters and then our double-a game, which we'll get to.

1:24:07

The thing I was going to say is, this is another thing that feels like a nice little

1:24:10

correct of cleanup.

1:24:11

A thing I don't like in three is the subplot of buzz has spent 10 years trying to build

1:24:17

up the courage to hold Jesse's hand.

1:24:20

It's so infantilizing.

1:24:21

It is.

1:24:22

Well, they are toys and they're romance.

1:24:24

No, I don't.

1:24:25

I agree with you.

1:24:26

I don't like this.

1:24:27

I don't like my buzz being a bitch.

1:24:29

No, but buzz, this is sort of addressed in both three and four right buzzes, crush.

1:24:35

Like what, what are the other?

1:24:36

His crush develops at the end of two in three.

1:24:38

Yeah.

1:24:39

It is.

1:24:40

He has spent 10 years in a toy box with her not saying anything, just being awkward.

1:24:44

Right.

1:24:45

And at the end, he accidentally holds her hand and they look at each other.

1:24:48

Right.

1:24:49

And then they're like kind of together, but they don't get that much time.

1:24:51

Four really doesn't know what to do with Jesse.

1:24:54

Yeah.

1:24:55

Which is my biggest gripe with four.

1:24:56

Yeah.

1:24:57

And then this one, I like that it's like he's jealous that he hasn't gotten to do the

1:25:00

wedding with her.

1:25:02

They are clearly in a relationship and I have a work relationship as well.

1:25:06

Do you know, just think like the topic of romance in these movies between toys is just, it's

1:25:12

a naughty topic.

1:25:13

This is my other take that I shared with Ben is I think this is kind of like the romance

1:25:18

movie because I think what Jesse is working through in her like past owners and the

1:25:23

sphere of losing it is more of a breakup thing than it can I commit.

1:25:27

Can I?

1:25:28

Can I?

1:25:29

Yeah, sure.

1:25:30

It hurts so many times before.

1:25:32

It's that.

1:25:33

And it's also like if it ended badly, then did it mean anything in the first place?

1:25:38

That's what she's looking for.

1:25:39

That's what the tree moments about for me.

1:25:41

You know, it's like, can you have something that meant something that didn't last forever?

1:25:46

Did you name your child after an X?

1:25:49

No, that's an insane.

1:25:50

That seems like a bad idea.

1:25:52

Yeah, I agree.

1:25:53

That's where the metaphor gets stretchy.

1:25:54

I also will get to the tree moment, but there are some other angles I think you need to

1:25:58

consider there for why I think I buy it.

1:26:02

So Buzz is now her like right hand deputate.

1:26:05

Jesse is leading Bonnie's room.

1:26:07

Right.

1:26:08

She's got the chair.

1:26:09

She's a new Woody.

1:26:10

Yes.

1:26:11

Right.

1:26:12

Which is something Stanton said he wrote into four pointedly.

1:26:14

Yeah, it's four ends with that idea of Jesse giving Woody giving Jesse this star.

1:26:18

Not thinking that he was going to do five, but saying I think that is where the franchise

1:26:22

should go.

1:26:23

I think we've put so much story on Woody's shoulders.

1:26:27

The movies are ready to move over to someone else and Jesse's probably overdue to be the

1:26:31

center at one of these.

1:26:32

So very quickly, Bonnie's parents notice that she has no friends.

1:26:40

I mean, she says it to them.

1:26:41

She does.

1:26:43

Because she sees like neighborhood kids.

1:26:46

Why does no one want to play with me?

1:26:47

She just doesn't know how to talk to them.

1:26:49

She's so shy.

1:26:50

There are these twins next door and she's trying to build up the courage to play with them.

1:26:54

The movie does not address whatever is happening at school, which you know, it can't

1:26:57

because it would be like that's just too much to deal with.

1:27:01

But I guess the idea is that Bonnie is struggling to make friends.

1:27:03

She's shy.

1:27:04

You see that in four, too.

1:27:05

You see that the other kids at school are not particularly nice.

1:27:08

She makes four.

1:27:09

That's why she makes four.

1:27:10

Because she's a move.

1:27:11

Right.

1:27:12

But four is set on the first or even like a preliminary day of kindergarten.

1:27:15

So you don't really know what that's.

1:27:16

Right.

1:27:17

It was orientation.

1:27:18

Exactly.

1:27:19

Yeah.

1:27:20

She's shy.

1:27:21

She's struggling to whatever socialize or whatever and her parents, you know, who again

1:27:28

are mediocre parents.

1:27:31

To deal with this by buying her a tablet computer called Lily pad.

1:27:35

Here's the thing.

1:27:36

They like dump it on her fucking bad being like, here you go.

1:27:38

This will help you make friends.

1:27:39

But the implication is that this is like a very popular device being marketed as like

1:27:44

help your kid connect to other kids that's connected to sort of a closed loop for kids

1:27:48

social network.

1:27:49

Right.

1:27:50

The Lily pad.

1:27:51

And that's the cell that has successfully worked on the public.

1:27:54

I did think watching it a second time, do her parents oversights make a little more sense

1:28:00

if they have a second kid?

1:28:02

If in between four and five, if they're just kind of like, she's, you know, I don't

1:28:05

know, we're like, we're stretched thin.

1:28:07

It's true.

1:28:08

Bonnie is an only child.

1:28:09

Right.

1:28:10

I was like, they, they seem hyper focused on Bonnie and also making some easy mistakes.

1:28:15

I may, maybe I don't, I mean, it's also the movie has to have the movie has to happen.

1:28:20

Yeah.

1:28:21

Maybe one of the guys, like, yeah, they're not, they're not taking enough of an active

1:28:25

role.

1:28:26

Correct.

1:28:27

Where they should have, the parents should have made a, like a play date.

1:28:30

Right.

1:28:31

Like, what are they for?

1:28:32

Versus like, like, waiting for her to kind of make it happen through like a group chat.

1:28:37

I guess I get your, look, I'm analyzing the behavior of cartoon parents in a cartoon movie

1:28:44

that has to have her have an iPad to have the move story happen.

1:28:48

Obviously, it's hard to make your kid make friends at this age.

1:28:51

I'm sure because you can't like go to school and be like, Hey, you, you know, my kid wants

1:28:55

to be your friend.

1:28:56

Like, you know, that's not going to work.

1:28:57

Yeah.

1:28:58

That's how kids make friends.

1:28:59

For sure.

1:29:00

Uh, so I mean, obviously she goes to dance class as we know because that's who she's

1:29:03

connected to via Lily pad.

1:29:04

That's true.

1:29:05

She's going, they have signed her up for classes.

1:29:07

Yeah.

1:29:08

Clearly she's struggling to make friends.

1:29:09

Another lesson of this film is that dance is really clicky.

1:29:13

Yeah.

1:29:14

And the girls are mean.

1:29:15

This is the thing I love and, uh, uh, friends of the show, uh, Adam Volrich, Dom Niro,

1:29:20

host of the I, the duck podcast.

1:29:21

I was texting with them about the movie and they said, a good thing this movie does in

1:29:26

their opinion that I agree with is it definitively establishes some kids are just shitty.

1:29:32

Lily gets redeemed.

1:29:33

Yes.

1:29:34

It makes no effort to be like, Oh, and those kids, they didn't mean it.

1:29:37

It's just kind of like, yeah, I guess some kids suck.

1:29:40

Yeah.

1:29:41

People are just bullied to each other.

1:29:43

Totally.

1:29:44

It's just the nature of the world because the sit argument you can always say like, it's

1:29:47

creative.

1:29:48

He doesn't know he's hurting them.

1:29:49

He doesn't think they're alive.

1:29:50

Like he's not in the island.

1:29:51

It seems like his home life is.

1:29:52

There's a lot of stuff going on.

1:29:55

There are a lot of kids with fucking negligent parents who are growing up shitty in the

1:29:59

world of toy story.

1:30:00

Five.

1:30:01

I guess.

1:30:02

Yes.

1:30:03

Again, it's like you can only control so much in the world.

1:30:06

Of course, kids will be means which other to how kids explore everything.

1:30:10

They don't, they don't have fully developed senses of empathy or whatever.

1:30:13

They're not, you know, it's, it's, you know, it's happened in pre-k, like, you know,

1:30:18

like, of course, kids are mean.

1:30:20

Jesse's very invested almost like a parent in how do I get her to connect and feel

1:30:25

that she can help.

1:30:26

Which is the one he facilitates.

1:30:27

Like Woody is like that in three and four, especially in four, like the whole idea is,

1:30:32

he's like,

1:30:33

to take for key, yeah, to help Bonnie and it's like, bro, you know, being too extra.

1:30:38

This is the dramatic.

1:30:39

Where they're being a bit of a fuck what's the ranch called?

1:30:43

Root and Tudon.

1:30:44

You're being a little Root and Tudon ranch.

1:30:45

A little bit about this.

1:30:46

You're putting a little too much Root and Tudon ranch dress on.

1:30:49

But yes, she tries to do it and then realizes that she accidentally embarrasses Bonnie that

1:30:54

other kids are growing out toys.

1:30:56

Now, I remember when the trailer came out, David, you were like, I reject this premise.

1:31:00

My daughter loves toys more than anything.

1:31:02

That is a...

1:31:03

No, I'm right with this one.

1:31:04

What do you mean?

1:31:05

You did text this.

1:31:06

The idea that it's like toys are outmoded.

1:31:07

No one cares.

1:31:08

She's not gonna want to play with her toys because she'll only want to play with the iPad

1:31:12

or whatever.

1:31:13

Uh-huh.

1:31:14

1:31:14

Okay.

1:31:15

What is a sort of like studied thing is that kids are aging out of toys at an earlier

1:31:19

age.

1:31:20

Sure.

1:31:21

And tech is often thought of as the sort of like, that's what's bridging the gap.

1:31:24

And Jesse keeps saying throughout the film that technology is making kids grow up faster.

1:31:29

I know it's gonna end.

1:31:30

That is true.

1:31:31

I agree.

1:31:32

Yeah.

1:31:33

Right.

1:31:34

And that Bonnie seems a little bit younger.

1:31:36

She seems.

1:31:37

And like how you said, Jesse says that, like, like, it's like, Jesse, who's a professor of

1:31:40

toy knowledge, correct, with a degree from the University of Toy.

1:31:45

Yup.

1:31:46

Yeah.

1:31:47

You know, kids are growing up faster.

1:31:48

I'm like, Jesse, you live in a closet.

1:31:50

Like, you know, what the fuck?

1:31:51

You're not reading any shits.

1:31:52

Are you very radical, buddy?

1:31:53

It's a special.

1:31:54

It's a walk in.

1:31:55

Yeah, where is she getting it?

1:31:56

Like, where is she getting all of this exposure to other...

1:32:00

She gets on the walkie talking.

1:32:01

I live in a skunk room.

1:32:04

Yeah.

1:32:05

And I'm here and a lot of things too.

1:32:06

You have to remember, Jesse and Woody

1:32:08

have been alive for like 60 years.

1:32:10

Yeah, they've been alive right, like 60 to 70 years.

1:32:13

If they're like 50s or 60s toys, right?

1:32:15

That's the idea.

1:32:16

The whole thing was that Jesse wasn't played.

1:32:19

Jesse wasn't played with for like 30 years.

1:32:20

Jesse was abandoned for this.

1:32:22

The thing the movies won't touch is

1:32:24

who was Woody's owner before Andy.

1:32:25

I thought it was his family.

1:32:27

But they won't say he won't talk about it.

1:32:30

He talks about Andy like his first owner.

1:32:33

That's true.

1:32:34

And he's not like, of course I'm a fucking old toy

1:32:36

and I was played with by Andy Senior

1:32:39

before he went off to the war.

1:32:40

Right.

1:32:41

I died.

1:32:42

Or whatever.

1:32:43

I really thought four was going to do one line.

1:32:46

Uh-huh.

1:32:47

And they didn't.

1:32:48

It's all just clearly kind of like,

1:32:49

it's just complicated.

1:32:50

Who cares?

1:32:51

Right.

1:32:52

And also the third answer, they also

1:32:52

want to explain like, why is there a Pope car

1:32:54

in the car world?

1:32:56

Are the cars Catholic?

1:32:57

Well, because they need guidance.

1:32:58

What do you mean?

1:32:59

23 is about religion.

1:33:01

Some folks are Catholic.

1:33:02

Some cars are Catholic.

1:33:04

The Vanessa Redgrave car is Catholic.

1:33:07

Vanessa Redgrave voices.

1:33:09

Yeah, Franco Nero.

1:33:10

They play Luigi's Italian Uncle Car.

1:33:13

Sounds very not so.

1:33:15

This is a real.

1:33:16

This is real.

1:33:17

This is the movie that makes the other movie

1:33:18

look like the other movie.

1:33:19

Cars 2 is the most expensive film ever made.

1:33:21

I rewatched it again recently to be like,

1:33:23

Vanessa Redgrave voices an Italian car.

1:33:26

In a small role, I would even say.

1:33:28

An insignificant role.

1:33:30

She maybe only speaks Italian in the movie.

1:33:33

In the English dub.

1:33:35

Yeah, her and Franco Nero play Italian relatives

1:33:38

who they visit in a small car's town.

1:33:41

Wow.

1:33:42

Okay, so Bonnie gets the tablet.

1:33:43

No, I was going to mention in, in, in, in,

1:33:45

in Jessie's failed attempt.

1:33:47

Because this pre, this predates it.

1:33:49

In Jessie's failed attempt to try to set Bonnie up to make friends.

1:33:53

She ends up behind the house with the toys

1:33:56

who are all now traumatized by being abandoned by their owner.

1:33:59

They're in a kitty pool or whatever.

1:34:00

There's the kitty pool.

1:34:01

It's some of our party source, Rex friends.

1:34:04

And all these toys are like,

1:34:05

Doomsday, like tech is coming.

1:34:06

You don't understand.

1:34:07

It's over.

1:34:08

There's like a, the monkey with the symbol,

1:34:11

wind up dolls.

1:34:12

That's pretty funny.

1:34:13

There's calling out funny moments.

1:34:15

The bunny with the dry face.

1:34:16

Yeah.

1:34:17

He's like doing the homework.

1:34:18

Taps and me.

1:34:19

Taps and me.

1:34:20

Taps and me.

1:34:21

Sure.

1:34:22

They was just giving me a blank look.

1:34:23

Yeah.

1:34:24

I mean, I remember.

1:34:25

He's giving me the bank.

1:34:26

So Jessie's got this warning of be beware.

1:34:30

Right.

1:34:31

They're all I've had a.

1:34:32

Tech is coming.

1:34:33

And then she sees the box arrive.

1:34:34

Lily pad comes out.

1:34:35

And immediately she's got an attitude.

1:34:37

A attitude.

1:34:38

She's also just like fucking addicted.

1:34:41

Exomed.

1:34:42

Yes.

1:34:43

But she, but Ben's a Griffin saying that Lily,

1:34:45

the character has an attitude.

1:34:47

Lily has an attitude.

1:34:48

Bonnie.

1:34:49

She's kind of snarky.

1:34:50

She's kind of like, well, I know what's best.

1:34:51

You know, like she's got that vibe called Jesse Jessica,

1:34:54

which I think is funny because I think that is kind of the vibe of tech of like,

1:34:58

well, I've solved all the problems.

1:34:59

I as technology and my voice by Greta Lee,

1:35:02

uh-huh.

1:35:03

In the grand tradition of Pixar being like, I don't know, who's like kind of been in some

1:35:07

good, grown up movies recently.

1:35:08

Yeah.

1:35:09

Also, who was sort of cresting three years ago when we started developing this movie?

1:35:13

At one point it was announced that Anna Ferris was in this movie.

1:35:17

And it's unclear, Greta Lee replaced her or if she was supposed to play a different character.

1:35:20

It would make sense as like a kind of chirpy tech, you know,

1:35:23

Anna's so good at that kind of like, you know, making fun of that.

1:35:26

But it's almost better to have a voice that's a little steeler.

1:35:30

How's Anna Ferris in a scary movie section?

1:35:33

She doesn't look well as all I will say.

1:35:35

I would agree with that.

1:35:37

She is so good in scary movie six.

1:35:40

And it helps that she's doing the Jamie Lee Curtis.

1:35:42

I've been going crazy in my house waiting for my revenge.

1:35:46

I haven't seen the film.

1:35:47

I haven't seen it multiple times.

1:35:49

I mean, twice.

1:35:50

I think it's very funny.

1:35:52

I think it also is like really good at the legacy bullshit.

1:35:56

Sure.

1:35:57

The whole movie is the legacy characters being so angry at the young characters who are

1:36:01

like trying to be like, we're the leads now and they're like, fuck you guys so hard.

1:36:05

This sucks.

1:36:06

No one wants to see your movie.

1:36:07

And Anna Ferris plays the sort of shell shocked PTSD, trauma plot survivor character.

1:36:13

She's, did I see scary movie?

1:36:16

How many times did you see it?

1:36:18

Marie's just, Marie's just looking at me.

1:36:21

She's going into the sunken place.

1:36:22

People don't even say that whether you saw it, they just look at you like this.

1:36:26

David's doing well.

1:36:27

Except, no, wait, and the whale meme, he's actually doing a different face in that.

1:36:31

Yeah.

1:36:32

Yeah.

1:36:33

I mean, it's a different face.

1:36:34

And in the whale meme, he's thinking the people are amazing.

1:36:36

People are amazing.

1:36:37

No, I didn't see, I've never seen a single scary movie.

1:36:39

I'm sure that I've ever seen one in full, be honest.

1:36:42

This one has a really good K-pop demon hunter's parody.

1:36:45

That is fully animated.

1:36:46

I think you're the only person like.

1:36:48

I will say, people are generally negative about this film.

1:36:51

I'm like a little surprised.

1:36:53

I'm not like saying like five stars.

1:36:56

I'm, go see it.

1:36:57

I was like, I think this is funny.

1:36:59

And I rewatched all the previous ones recently.

1:37:02

And they're not better than this.

1:37:04

But are they worse?

1:37:06

Yeah.

1:37:06

Several of them are.

1:37:07

Right.

1:37:08

And I feel like, no, I get, sorry, but are they good?

1:37:11

Uh, some of them are, half of them are not.

1:37:14

Four, five is not.

1:37:16

In memory, they're kind of all bad.

1:37:18

Five is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

1:37:20

Right.

1:37:20

That's one on a fairs is even in.

1:37:22

Correct.

1:37:23

That's one of the worst films like ever

1:37:24

to get a wide release.

1:37:26

Truly.

1:37:27

And maybe you just couldn't handle the truth of all this.

1:37:29

Satire.

1:37:30

Five was written and shot directed by Malcolm Delie

1:37:34

to primarily be a black swan parody.

1:37:37

And then in January, Mama came out and opened pretty well.

1:37:41

And they panicked and went, what if the movie's Mama instead?

1:37:44

And they reshot the movie to be 50% Mama six weeks

1:37:48

before it came out.

1:37:49

Sounds good.

1:37:50

With David Zucker taking over.

1:37:51

Yeah, that's what I say.

1:37:52

That sounds good.

1:37:53

Yeah, it feels like that.

1:37:54

It feels like a movie made in a month.

1:37:55

December 2019.

1:37:57

In the soprano's pilot, Christopher mentions his cousin

1:38:00

went to my high school, then shoot someone.

1:38:03

It's true.

1:38:04

That's the, that's the tweet.

1:38:05

This is a fact.

1:38:06

This is a high school.

1:38:07

Bonnie gets on the pond.

1:38:08

She starts making friends.

1:38:09

She gets invited to a sleepover.

1:38:11

Jesse and Bullseye sneak into the suitcase to accompany her.

1:38:16

And she is embarrassed by having toys.

1:38:18

Yes.

1:38:19

So this is the thing, right?

1:38:21

Like Bonnie is now being seen as a baby by other kids

1:38:25

because she wants to play with toys and do goofy voices

1:38:28

and pretend.

1:38:29

Yes.

1:38:30

Right.

1:38:31

And Lily Pad really takes it as a like, see, I'm right.

1:38:34

I'm right.

1:38:35

She just needs to be networked.

1:38:38

She needs to be keeping up to date

1:38:39

and all the games they play on my OS.

1:38:42

Every morning before school, she has to be like, you know,

1:38:45

checking in with the group chat.

1:38:47

Right.

1:38:48

Even the way that they engage with each other,

1:38:50

is they're all just sitting next to each other

1:38:53

but looking at a screen.

1:38:54

Yes.

1:38:55

I just have to address this.

1:38:56

Ben is basically acting like we just watched like a news hour.

1:39:00

Absolutely.

1:39:01

I know.

1:39:02

Can I have a PBS news hour documentary about how kids actually are?

1:39:04

It is a movie.

1:39:06

I'm not sure they're all actually in their rooms.

1:39:09

Dapping away on tap.

1:39:10

I don't know.

1:39:11

I see teens out.

1:39:12

Well, the teens are different.

1:39:14

And they're sitting at the teens.

1:39:15

It's bad.

1:39:16

They're sitting at the table, you know, at the whatever, at the fast food place

1:39:19

and they're all just staring at their phone.

1:39:21

They're not engaging with each other.

1:39:22

I kind of like that.

1:39:23

Right.

1:39:24

We're all we've all been guilty of this.

1:39:25

I mean, David, you have been you, but I'm trying to get away from it.

1:39:29

For a court every episode staring at a screen.

1:39:32

Well, that's true.

1:39:33

I mean, I mean, how also would I tell you Ben Hossley on my birthday in 2019 tweeted,

1:39:39

I've decided my new bit is I'm serious, which is funny.

1:39:45

No greater bit.

1:39:46

Oh, shit.

1:39:47

Okay.

1:39:48

I was I was not sure if I was going to do this.

1:39:51

Do it.

1:39:52

We don't have to do it.

1:39:54

Screen time challenge.

1:39:55

Guys screens down.

1:39:56

So what are you?

1:39:57

It's a screen time.

1:39:58

Oh, to literally do the count.

1:40:00

Like looking up.

1:40:01

Yeah.

1:40:02

Can't be good.

1:40:03

Okay.

1:40:04

I just need to preface this by saying my job is phone.

1:40:06

Yeah.

1:40:07

I mean, I mean, so we're all kind of in job is tech territory.

1:40:12

It's that is the thing I wore.

1:40:14

I deal with a little bit to it's not so much job, although I don't like that it's job.

1:40:18

Mm hmm.

1:40:19

Wait, are we doing daily average?

1:40:20

Yeah, whatever it says every week.

1:40:22

I got five hours, three minutes.

1:40:24

Oh, I'm four hours, seven minutes.

1:40:27

That's great.

1:40:29

But that's because my job is phone, but also my job is computer.

1:40:32

I thought to say, say, I think that hurts as do I and I slack from yes.

1:40:37

Yeah.

1:40:38

Mine is I've hours 12.

1:40:40

I seemingly either turn mine off or never turned it on.

1:40:44

So it has no report for me.

1:40:46

It says look here.

1:40:47

18 hours.

1:40:48

App and website activity.

1:40:49

You never know.

1:40:50

Oh, wow.

1:40:51

You broke it.

1:40:52

I have the problem also of like, because I'm always like actually one of those brick things

1:40:56

and I should break my phone more often.

1:40:57

Yeah.

1:40:58

And then I'm like, but like it's so irritating how so much of my life is on the phone.

1:41:02

Yes.

1:41:03

That's a bad man.

1:41:04

You know, that kind of like the school shit, the class app, like the fucking shopping I

1:41:10

do for the family or whatever.

1:41:12

I just pick up Asa at school once and I had to download an app for it.

1:41:16

That's really class.

1:41:17

Dojo, you had to get something.

1:41:19

Yeah.

1:41:20

That's really funny.

1:41:21

I'm like, this is fucking nuts.

1:41:22

That is.

1:41:23

You know, pick up this child.

1:41:25

I try to push away, but it is like the nature of what we do in this being a thing that

1:41:29

exists on the internet.

1:41:30

There's just like a constant amount of stuff that we need to respond to that happens through

1:41:35

devices.

1:41:36

It's annoying.

1:41:37

In addition to obviously watching a lot of stuff and like researching a lot of stuff.

1:41:41

And then, you know, obviously there's a blitz event right now with Lily Pat and Bonnie

1:41:46

and I'm trying to unlock.

1:41:47

Oh, Jesus.

1:41:48

Oh boy.

1:41:49

I bet your Disney emoji blitz time is probably bigger than that.

1:41:52

That might be a scary one.

1:41:53

I will say this.

1:41:54

I went to battery usage and it does say that 20% of my battery usage is emoji blitz, which

1:41:59

I think I got down a little bit.

1:42:00

What would happen if you stopped playing Disney emoji blitz?

1:42:03

We can throw any sort of wild hypotheticals in this.

1:42:07

Oh, wait.

1:42:08

What happened if there was no planes in the sky?

1:42:10

It took their place.

1:42:11

It flew.

1:42:12

All right.

1:42:15

So Bonnie's gets quickly hooked on the pad and she's just a little zombie and she doesn't

1:42:21

want to play with her toys.

1:42:22

She's getting bullied for playing with toys, which is constantly what we do to Griffin.

1:42:26

This is true.

1:42:27

Of course, Griffin is not a year.

1:42:28

I laugh all the way to the bank.

1:42:30

Here we should say, because Jesse and Bullseye, right, they go off with Bonnie and then end

1:42:36

up getting sent over to Bonnie's original.

1:42:39

No one has left.

1:42:40

No one has left.

1:42:41

You're skipping a couple steps here because of course, what happens first is she gets

1:42:45

on the walkie talkie with Woody.

1:42:47

This is my hottest take in the movie.

1:42:49

I think Tom Hanks remains great at playing this character.

1:42:53

I think everything they do with Woody is funny.

1:42:55

I do think this movie would kind of work better if Woody was not in a peer here.

1:42:58

What sure if it's out of the movie for sure, but I don't remember feeling that he was

1:43:02

actually like actively a drag on the movie anything like, but it is certainly the movie

1:43:08

is basically like, well, you're here because you have to be, but the joke will essentially

1:43:11

be like, we don't really, you don't really have a purpose.

1:43:14

He's kind of bald now.

1:43:15

No, I mean, that's your five.

1:43:17

I was poncho.

1:43:18

I was poncho.

1:43:19

Is it cool?

1:43:20

Oh, he is.

1:43:21

That's the poncho, but his poncho.

1:43:22

He got a poncho.

1:43:23

I'm poncho, which actually I struggled with the physics though.

1:43:26

This stuff thing has come loose.

1:43:28

It's redistributed in his body.

1:43:30

It makes actually perfect.

1:43:31

So then why does he suck it back in because he's self conscious, much like his bald spot.

1:43:36

Because he has air.

1:43:37

The heap reeks.

1:43:38

No, he's like pushing it back.

1:43:40

David, David, stop.

1:43:41

Okay.

1:43:42

It's a posture thing, but Woody is firmly supporting and is a supporting character in the film.

1:43:48

I think I didn't like a walkie talkie.

1:43:52

Why, why, you know, like, buzz doesn't know it exists.

1:43:55

Yeah, I'm not sure why that needs to happen, except for the plot mechanics of buzz kind

1:44:00

of accidentally thinks he needs to get involved.

1:44:03

I read it as, yes, a Jesse insecurity thing of that I consult Woody for help and also buzzes

1:44:09

insecurity of if he knows me or whatever.

1:44:13

It's both of their fragile male egos.

1:44:15

I buy this.

1:44:16

It doesn't feel like it undoes for.

1:44:18

You're like, if Woody's whole thing is that he goes around saving toys.

1:44:21

When we see him saving a little Maddie Matheson out of a tree with his gang.

1:44:25

Yeah, no, I don't care.

1:44:26

I was, he comes back.

1:44:27

It doesn't feel like it's undoing anything.

1:44:29

And then he's just funny.

1:44:30

It's just a lot of bits of him in buzz fighting and people joking about how old he looks.

1:44:35

But he is firmly supporting his.

1:44:36

I assume there are people on Yon Internet who are like, they were, you know, toy store 4

1:44:41

ends with an emotional goodbye.

1:44:42

How could they undo this?

1:44:43

They're ruining the emotion of that moment and I to that might say, you know, it'll be

1:44:47

okay.

1:44:48

I also think the ending still stands.

1:44:50

I know.

1:44:51

I love her.

1:44:52

Right.

1:44:53

And it's like the ending is still like, yeah, well, if he got a call that he needed, so

1:44:57

they needed help, he would do that.

1:44:58

He's a down.

1:44:59

And then he'll leave again, which he does.

1:45:00

Sure.

1:45:01

Yeah.

1:45:02

Does it ever come up?

1:45:03

Do you think Bonnie's ever like, hey, whatever, I'm not, I don't know, they're fucking

1:45:06

cowboy.

1:45:07

Well, you have to remember in four, she doesn't really like Woody.

1:45:10

So I know, but she doesn't come.

1:45:11

I'm sure it comes up.

1:45:12

Yeah, oh, we lost that somewhere.

1:45:14

Right.

1:45:15

They just don't care that much about Woody.

1:45:16

Yeah.

1:45:17

But do you think Andy ever who lives next door is like, hey, where's Woody?

1:45:20

My fucking beloved toy.

1:45:22

David, you sound like the red it now.

1:45:23

They're like, Andy gave it to her with a speech explaining that he was the most important

1:45:27

character.

1:45:28

And she didn't even know.

1:45:29

And he doesn't live next door.

1:45:31

Isn't that how he ends up giving her the box?

1:45:34

No, because the mom, Andy's mom, yeah, I get it.

1:45:38

But it's like Andy's moving.

1:45:39

Andy's mom, there's going to call it.

1:45:41

Yeah.

1:45:42

And he's mom's donate to him to the preschool.

1:45:44

Bonnie's mom runs the preschool.

1:45:46

Yeah.

1:45:47

And then why is Andy there?

1:45:49

At the end because Andy's mom is like, I don't know.

1:45:52

Maybe he's like, that's a little next door.

1:45:54

No, he drove off.

1:45:55

He drives.

1:45:56

I just rewatched the book.

1:45:57

He gave him a license.

1:45:58

He's going to college.

1:45:59

He's 18 years old.

1:46:00

No, but what state?

1:46:01

Where do they live?

1:46:02

Try county area, of course.

1:46:04

He got a try county license.

1:46:05

Try county.

1:46:06

One of them fancy try county licenses.

1:46:08

Once Woody comes in, they try to really go aggressive against Lily pad and.

1:46:13

Right.

1:46:14

They go to war.

1:46:15

They unplug her.

1:46:16

Right.

1:46:17

They're like, and they, when do they discover that if you

1:46:19

say, Hey, Lily, she snaps into Siri mode because I thought that was later.

1:46:22

Later.

1:46:23

That's very funny.

1:46:24

Yeah.

1:46:25

I liked the running bit that every time a tech toy is running low on battery.

1:46:30

They're drunk.

1:46:31

They're drunk.

1:46:32

That was good.

1:46:33

Well, this is what kind of a trying to get us to.

1:46:35

All right.

1:46:36

I just had to establish Woody coming back for.

1:46:38

You're just he gets knocked out of the house and then found by an elderly hippie burn out

1:46:42

couple.

1:46:43

Which I love that they're just specific people.

1:46:45

You know, it's very California.

1:46:47

Yes.

1:46:48

Did we say and funny a lot?

1:46:50

Who?

1:46:51

I thought movie was funny.

1:46:52

I had a good time at this movie.

1:46:53

I was, I was having a good time right watch.

1:46:55

I was sitting there being like, well, well, well, her own.

1:46:58

Just pay some respect to the Ben Hossley news hour.

1:47:00

Also every time he's speaking in this way, he is sitting at his desk with his work.

1:47:04

I'm trying to find a way to read a Haasley treat right now.

1:47:08

Did you guys talk about how we got new chairs in the office and that they're like better

1:47:11

for a posture?

1:47:12

Yeah.

1:47:13

This is from December 2018.

1:47:15

Hey, country roads to curvy.

1:47:17

It's true.

1:47:20

So who voices do you know is it?

1:47:22

You know what fun I didn't notice anyone's specific.

1:47:26

But they notice, of course, that Emily Jessie's original owner wrote her name inside the

1:47:30

trap.

1:47:31

Right.

1:47:32

She'd oh, and her address.

1:47:33

And her address.

1:47:34

And so they take her to this sort of, I guess it's like in the boonies or whatever.

1:47:37

Yes.

1:47:38

Because it's kind of a far.

1:47:39

Farmer.

1:47:40

Right.

1:47:41

A horse girl named Blaze is the now occupant of this home with her parents.

1:47:46

Now, Griffith, are you feeling worried?

1:47:49

I know that like, I'm sure this was a big part of the rumor mill.

1:47:53

Yes.

1:47:54

Of like, okay, they're going to, they're going to dig into the Jesse owner thing.

1:47:57

Yeah.

1:47:58

Are you sitting there like, I hope we meet Jesse's original owner?

1:48:01

Are you worried?

1:48:02

I'm like, this is my, that was my guess that you're worrying like, oh no, Jesse's owner

1:48:06

will be a character.

1:48:07

Some pictures.

1:48:08

This is something that'll be in the movie in a big way.

1:48:10

Some pictures and stuff hinted at the original house and people were like, that looks like

1:48:15

the tire swing from the circle.

1:48:16

Right.

1:48:17

People were kind of picking up on the thing.

1:48:18

And I was like, her going back to the house is interesting.

1:48:21

I like her sort of reckoning with stuff.

1:48:23

I don't want her to see Emily.

1:48:26

Yeah.

1:48:27

That was a big thing for me.

1:48:28

I obviously, I'm less emotionally invested in this series than you, but I too was just

1:48:32

kind of like, I think that would be a mistake.

1:48:33

Yes.

1:48:34

And I think, again, I'm thinking about it from my kids perspective.

1:48:36

I'm like, I think my kid wouldn't get it because she would be old.

1:48:40

Yes.

1:48:41

And it would just be kind of confusing.

1:48:42

I mean, Emily's quite, quite likely dead at this point.

1:48:45

Either dead or an old woman because like what assumes she's going on.

1:48:48

Her daughter owned Jesse in the 60s or whatever.

1:48:50

Yes.

1:48:51

Correct.

1:48:52

So I didn't want them to do that.

1:48:53

And I was very relieved that it's like, no, this is a new family.

1:48:55

There's a new family in the house.

1:48:56

It allows for the tackle, new issues while also dealing with the echoes and the reminders

1:49:00

of the past.

1:49:01

And when we get to this house, I do wonder if my kid will be like, I don't get it.

1:49:06

Like because it is weird that it's like, wait, so this is Jesse's house, but it's different

1:49:10

people.

1:49:11

I wonder, we'll see.

1:49:12

Again, she might just be like, I like the potty robot.

1:49:14

Like, you know, who knows?

1:49:15

Yeah.

1:49:16

I mean, I like the internal logic whenever Toy Story gets into like the different types of

1:49:21

toys and the different types of psychology.

1:49:23

But we basically go to the pool house at this ranch, the garden shed that has mostly kind

1:49:28

of like pool toys and beach toys and things like that.

1:49:31

They haven't played with in years.

1:49:33

This is like combat car.

1:49:34

I don't think it's a pool house.

1:49:35

I think it's just like a garden shed.

1:49:36

It's a garden shed.

1:49:37

It's a little playhouse.

1:49:38

It's a little playhouse.

1:49:39

It's not.

1:49:40

It's a lot of like beach toys.

1:49:41

I guess so, but it's one of those little plastic houses you got a child.

1:49:44

Yeah.

1:49:45

Yeah.

1:49:46

Whatever.

1:49:47

But combat car is not an outdoor toy.

1:49:48

He's not, but she's like drawn tattoos on him and put it to two on him and a different

1:49:52

combat car.

1:49:53

Yes.

1:49:54

1:49:54

1:49:54

Yes.

1:49:55

This is voiced by Ernie Hudson because of course, Karl Weathers was previously combat

1:49:58

car and has passed away.

1:49:59

I also love little pizza guy played by bad bunny.

1:50:02

Of course.

1:50:03

That really made me laugh.

1:50:04

Pizza was sunglasses.

1:50:05

That's the kind of Toy Story joke that'll get a chuckle out of old Simzi right here.

1:50:10

And then we meet Smarrie Pants.

1:50:12

Yes.

1:50:13

So they've all been sitting here waiting for blaze to return for a tea party.

1:50:16

It's been years, but what killed them all, what ended the tea party was tech.

1:50:21

The first device that ended everything for them and it was Smarrie Pants, which Jesse

1:50:24

revealed she was sitting on.

1:50:25

The MVP of the movie, right?

1:50:26

Obviously.

1:50:27

Conan is killing.

1:50:28

He's on fire.

1:50:29

Yes, fucking thing.

1:50:30

What I liked about what he's doing is he's giving a real performance.

1:50:34

It's real.

1:50:35

It doesn't really sound like Conan.

1:50:36

No.

1:50:38

The Conan we all listen to on the first and only podcast.

1:50:41

Conan O'Brien needs friends.

1:50:42

Best in last.

1:50:45

Keith, you know, he's sort of thought up a character here.

1:50:48

Like obviously when you see him in Bonnie's pretend verse and he's got the Conan hair,

1:50:53

that's a clever little nod to who's voicing him.

1:50:56

But my friend was like, I didn't realize I was Conan.

1:50:59

It almost feels like when Conan voices the angry audience member on his show, when he

1:51:03

goes like, what are you doing?

1:51:05

Yeah, right, right.

1:51:06

It's like it's sort of a kind of like voice in his repertoire, but it's him turned all

1:51:11

the way up.

1:51:12

And this is the other part where I was like, I think I see what the movie is doing and

1:51:17

it's smart.

1:51:18

There was this sort of bridge era of tech toys that Jesse is going to view as enemies.

1:51:25

They're just like Lily pad and they are obsolete.

1:51:28

They're the same as her in a way.

1:51:30

They're limited tech toys who had an emotional relationship with her because they weren't

1:51:34

just a tablet to the internet.

1:51:35

They had specific purposes.

1:51:37

Smarty pants as he likes to point out is not a chair.

1:51:39

He is a potty training tool.

1:51:42

He is meant to help you log your P P and your poop.

1:51:45

That's so funny.

1:51:46

I wonder if it's so funny every time that he gets really kind of like high and mighty about

1:51:50

his position.

1:51:51

Right.

1:51:52

Right.

1:51:53

I mean, I think all those gags are good.

1:51:55

Always.

1:51:56

Like every little joke.

1:51:57

Every little.

1:51:58

Yes.

1:51:59

It's like a you log one for P and two for poop.

1:52:02

And then what is it?

1:52:03

A fart.

1:52:04

Yeah.

1:52:05

Or should like a heavy fart or what he's doing this sort of like.

1:52:07

It's a number one.

1:52:08

And number two.

1:52:09

Like a really pudding.

1:52:11

I would say a lot of root and tuton ranch on his line.

1:52:13

And the bit of, you know, he.

1:52:16

What was his batteries of batteries have died.

1:52:20

So he's kind of drunk.

1:52:21

It's like foster.

1:52:22

It's good.

1:52:23

Yeah.

1:52:24

Yeah.

1:52:25

But he gets really excited at the idea of Jesse being able to reconnect him.

1:52:29

His batteries are low, but she has a common purpose.

1:52:31

She needs to get back.

1:52:33

He has tech.

1:52:34

He can help her get back.

1:52:36

So she lets him into the house.

1:52:39

He finds Atlas and snappy, a GPS for kids and a like low tech digital camera who all three

1:52:45

of them connect to each other with like outmoded USB plugs.

1:52:50

Yes.

1:52:51

Yes.

1:52:52

Snappy voice by Shelby Robara.

1:52:54

Yes.

1:52:55

Not an actress.

1:52:56

I know.

1:52:57

She's from Steven Universe that on a Ferris was supposed to play snappy at some point.

1:53:00

It was never clear.

1:53:01

And then Atlas is Craig Robinson.

1:53:04

It's reliable figure.

1:53:05

Yes.

1:53:06

These three are basically able to like together linked up with new batteries installed, form

1:53:12

a little like social media tech team.

1:53:16

I like that they sort of have consciousness, but then they also have access to the outside

1:53:20

world.

1:53:21

Snappy can see things, Atlas can locate things and smarty pants can do text.

1:53:27

This is the Pixar thing.

1:53:28

You're so smart how they decided to create these characters and how they'll be used throughout

1:53:35

the movie.

1:53:36

I said to Ben, I think this is a real stand and thing where he really likes the internal

1:53:39

logic of what's a different type of toy.

1:53:43

What would be the psychology of that toy we haven't explored before and what's a specific

1:53:47

way that character can play into the story and activate something that couldn't be done

1:53:52

by any other character.

1:53:54

Like there's no character put on the board in this movie in a major role who doesn't serve

1:53:59

significant story function in the third act, unlocking something.

1:54:04

And we were talking about me.

1:54:05

You said it, Ben, the second the movie ended last night, you went, I cannot believe that

1:54:09

is the same person who made in the blink of an eye.

1:54:11

It's crazy.

1:54:12

A movie that feels so kind of like mill misconceived on a basic level.

1:54:16

And this movie is so goddamn tight.

1:54:19

It just feels like every story idea it has has been worked down to its tightest possible

1:54:23

point.

1:54:25

This is not as funny, Ben, but this is a saga I forgot about from your life October

1:54:29

2018.

1:54:30

Yup.

1:54:31

I'm locked in my apartment.

1:54:32

I went from homeless to too much home.

1:54:35

Help.

1:54:36

You couldn't open your apartment.

1:54:39

I just moved into a new apartment after couch serving for many months and the door knob

1:54:44

just broke off in my hands.

1:54:46

There was an episode we canceled because of it.

1:54:49

And I will leave you not trapped inside.

1:54:51

Yes, we put in record.

1:54:52

And your your landlord said like the bottom lock wasn't his problem and you were like,

1:54:57

is he just a top lock guy?

1:55:01

Was that the place of cross the coast?

1:55:04

Yeah.

1:55:05

Yeah.

1:55:06

One more June 2018.

1:55:08

Slanderman is Slenderman's lawyer.

1:55:10

That's

1:55:11

That's

1:55:12

I'm just saying, I think you need to publish a book.

1:55:17

That's what it means.

1:55:18

You need to be like one of those urban outfit or like wisdom of the town of Ben.

1:55:23

We need these musings, but I don't think it has to be on social media.

1:55:25

I mean, certainly I'm like Instagram only these days and I wish I spent even less time

1:55:30

in Instagram that I do, but I mostly lurk and then repost things.

1:55:35

And I certainly feel healthier for it, not being on any of the text-based apps.

1:55:39

Yeah, I don't use Twitter anymore.

1:55:41

I'll look at it sometimes for sports.

1:55:43

I don't I use Instagram, but you know, I don't post much.

1:55:47

I guess I'm on Blue Sky, but that's kind of like I post once a week on Blue Sky.

1:55:53

I lost the poster urge.

1:55:55

Same myself of that.

1:55:57

Same.

1:55:58

I don't post.

1:55:59

I used to have the thing when I had Twitter where I was like any thought I'd be like,

1:56:02

oh, that'd be fun.

1:56:03

You know, like, and I just I spent enough time Twitter did like to start behaving in a way

1:56:08

after this one guy bought it that really started to distress me.

1:56:12

Like, I know all you're talking about.

1:56:14

And I just was like, I guess I'll stop.

1:56:17

And then I did the stop long enough that I was like, I lost the poster disease.

1:56:20

I'm just imagining someone like replying to a Ben tweet being like, at Grock, what is

1:56:25

this?

1:56:26

Right.

1:56:27

At Grock explains.

1:56:28

And that's the famous thing of like early AI being asked, uh, would Ben Hossley like

1:56:35

the movie Slumdog Millionaire?

1:56:37

And the response was it's impossible to say Ben alternates between liking wet things

1:56:41

and dry things.

1:56:43

The movie has both, we don't know which one he likes more these days.

1:56:46

And we were like, Ben has outsmarted AI.

1:56:49

You can't track his bits.

1:56:51

Yeah.

1:56:52

Love it.

1:56:53

Um, Triple A gang is trying to figure out how to make a post through the pond to alert

1:56:57

Bonnie that her toys are here.

1:57:00

And then Jesse very quickly realizes, wait a second, is this an opportunity to also connect

1:57:05

these two kids?

1:57:06

Cause she knows that Blaze who has grown out of toys and grown out of these tech toys

1:57:10

is an animal kicker.

1:57:12

But she likes animals and she's still got a creative sensibility.

1:57:15

She's, yeah, plays with the animals like their toys, which I also thought was smart

1:57:19

in terms of like any hand-wringing panic about like is tech the death of everything.

1:57:24

You're like, well, like our toys getting us away from us existing with nature.

1:57:28

Like that's also a technology, right?

1:57:30

Yeah.

1:57:31

And so the only toys she still has like on display are her horse shelf because she's a

1:57:35

horse girl.

1:57:36

Right.

1:57:37

And that's just sort of for display.

1:57:39

But otherwise she has her pig, Jimmy Dean and her horse, Daffodil and Jimmy Dean, she

1:57:44

talks to like it's a toy she does routines with love.

1:57:48

Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean fucking rolls.

1:57:50

Jimmy Dean's the pet pig.

1:57:52

Yes.

1:57:53

I like.

1:57:54

He's so cute.

1:57:55

I just wanted to slumber on.

1:57:56

I like that he's also not like a cartoon pig that he's like kind of a gross pig in a way

1:57:59

that makes him cute.

1:58:00

He's like, like Peppa Pig's dad.

1:58:02

He has like chin hair, whatever.

1:58:04

But I like it.

1:58:05

It doesn't bother me.

1:58:06

It tells to the class, you know, people are like, I want a little pig.

1:58:09

You know, Piglet for a pet and it's like, you know, it's going to turn into like a big

1:58:13

pig.

1:58:14

Turn to a gym.

1:58:15

Even if it's like a miniature pig or whatever, like they turn into big old pigs.

1:58:18

And that's what happened when she loves her pig.

1:58:20

She loves Jimmy Dean.

1:58:22

And Jesse recognizes it.

1:58:23

Bonnie's not like other kids.

1:58:24

She plays.

1:58:25

She's creative and blazes got this thing.

1:58:28

Can we set the two of them up to hang out?

1:58:30

Right.

1:58:31

Woody and Buzz have followed after Jesse are committed to trying to save her and are sort

1:58:34

of fighting about who's actually number two, who's the deputy.

1:58:39

Because they get there because Bonnie, yes, has been, uh, realized she's lost Jesse.

1:58:48

Bonnie gets the message.

1:58:50

Right.

1:58:51

Right.

1:58:52

It goes to her, her iPad.

1:58:53

Lily pads trying to block this.

1:58:54

This is when Woody and Buzz are sort of triangulating like, what if we unplug her charger,

1:58:58

she loses battery, she'll get kind of drunk.

1:59:01

Then can we interrogate her?

1:59:03

There's the lizard that they use to activate her.

1:59:05

That was really funny.

1:59:07

They've realized the voice activation thing.

1:59:09

They're trying to figure out how to outsmart Lily pad and she just keeps leveling up.

1:59:13

They're like, can we, we just got this message.

1:59:15

Oh, right.

1:59:16

From Jesse, here's where she is.

1:59:18

Here's the address.

1:59:19

Here are the toys.

1:59:20

Let's print it out so they find it.

1:59:22

They say, but they, I think one of them says send it to all or something.

1:59:25

Yes, send all.

1:59:26

Yeah.

1:59:27

And so it prints out.

1:59:28

But then like Lily pad activates the Roomba.

1:59:31

Which I like the idea that the Roomba also because Bonnie has played with it has also now

1:59:35

sort of gained a little sentience.

1:59:37

Oh, I mean, think about it later in the film.

1:59:40

Right.

1:59:41

Lily pad of course wants to fuck the Roomba.

1:59:43

They don't fuck the toys.

1:59:46

She wants to.

1:59:47

Mine did.

1:59:48

I would go boom, boom, boom.

1:59:49

Yeah, so I have sex with these.

1:59:50

Smashy blood.

1:59:51

The barbies.

1:59:52

Yeah.

1:59:53

Perfectly healthy.

1:59:54

There's nothing wrong with this.

1:59:55

I was literally thinking the exact same thing.

1:59:57

I'm getting loopy.

1:59:58

Should be here in 15 minutes.

1:59:59

I ordered it.

2:00:00

So one thing to credit this movie and it felt this way above four as well.

2:00:06

It just looks fantastic.

2:00:07

It does.

2:00:08

It's that Pixar thing where they're just, they're so next level now with the environments

2:00:12

and the way they make the like lighting and the air and all that look.

2:00:16

We talked about this very impressive after the screening we went to where it was like

2:00:21

a lot of the shots specifically in the like buzz hive mind segments are studying.

2:00:28

Yes.

2:00:29

Beautiful sunsets and like the fog in that one moment.

2:00:34

I'm like, this is, this is really pretty.

2:00:37

It uses color like unbelievably well for mood and story.

2:00:41

You know, it's one of those things where I know he said like this is my last animated film.

2:00:45

I really only went and I'm just kind of like you're good at this.

2:00:47

You're good.

2:00:48

Like are you sure you want to stop?

2:00:49

I mean, his thing is like I'm not primarily a fan of animation.

2:00:53

I'm a fan of movies.

2:00:54

I fell into this thing.

2:00:55

I've never wanted to limit myself to that.

2:00:57

But I think what he does that is so unique is he's, and this is a lot of what Pixar did

2:01:02

in general, but I think he was at the forefront of pushing him towards this is like marrying

2:01:06

the visual language of the two things together.

2:01:09

Like a thing we commented on afterwards that is so cool in this movie.

2:01:13

Is it acts like it's sort of mostly done with handheld camera and it's very subtle?

2:01:19

But beyond like, Stanton's always been the stickler guy who's like, can we make the virtual

2:01:23

camera operate by the real rules of a camera?

2:01:25

Right.

2:01:26

So beyond this, what is our lighting source?

2:01:29

And in this you see the camera struggling to keep the characters in frame.

2:01:33

Like the camera sort of like moves quickly to readjust as if the performance isn't planned.

2:01:39

And it's a very, very subtle thing, but it like it, it psychologically has an effect

2:01:43

on you.

2:01:45

We should say the tech buzz is they've been activated.

2:01:48

They go to this construction site.

2:01:50

They use the crane.

2:01:51

They're just in search of a star.

2:01:54

They find a campsite for land.

2:01:56

They're trying to find civilization.

2:01:57

They're trying to find star command.

2:01:59

And at this campsite, one of them is taken.

2:02:02

They realize, oh, this is not scary.

2:02:04

Maybe this is good to be played with.

2:02:08

This one buzz seems happy.

2:02:09

And then they look onto the kids' devices and they see the Jesse message from Blaze's

2:02:15

house.

2:02:16

Right.

2:02:17

They look up the address.

2:02:18

And when they use Google Maps or whatever, it places the address with a star.

2:02:21

I just like it's smart all the ways that they're just sort of like she has a star on

2:02:26

her chest.

2:02:27

There's a star in the sky.

2:02:28

There's a star on the map.

2:02:30

We're just simple.

2:02:31

We go wherever the fucking star is.

2:02:32

And when Bonnie goes to Blaze's house for the first time and then the group chat plays

2:02:38

out where they send the crying baby images and then they all laugh.

2:02:42

Yes.

2:02:43

It was awful.

2:02:44

So fucking mean, man.

2:02:45

Fuck those girls.

2:02:47

Yeah.

2:02:48

Yeah.

2:02:49

The shitty kids.

2:02:50

Shitty kids.

2:02:51

They get docks.

2:02:52

But I do think I might use that joke if someone sends me a stupid text.

2:02:58

Trying baby.

2:02:59

Yeah.

2:03:00

Like, winds about something.

2:03:01

I do think there's potential there.

2:03:03

Maybe that'll be my first tweet.

2:03:05

December 2017.

2:03:06

My nickname for Dan Lewis is the method man.

2:03:09

My boy.

2:03:10

My boy.

2:03:11

Incredible.

2:03:12

The snack wrap plus Caesar sauce equals extra crispy chicken scenery greatness.

2:03:27

Sounds delicious.

2:03:29

Caesar sauce at McDonald's for limited time.

2:03:32

Bottom up.

2:03:33

Buh-buh.

2:03:34

Right.

2:03:35

So Jesse.

2:03:37

Right.

2:03:38

So Jesse, the whole time is like, you know, like you're saying, like, well, I got a band

2:03:45

of before I, this Bonnie thing, I'm half want to help her.

2:03:49

But I half him, like, what's the point?

2:03:51

I'm only going to get forgotten again.

2:03:54

And the thing she realizes is that no, her owner didn't forget her because she named

2:03:59

her daughter after.

2:04:02

And there's, how do you, it's like, you see a picture?

2:04:04

What's the, like a buried lunch box?

2:04:06

Yeah.

2:04:07

Yeah.

2:04:08

Yeah.

2:04:09

Right.

2:04:10

You made a little time capsule.

2:04:11

2:04:11

Jesse was here.

2:04:12

And she goes, she's like, what's that?

2:04:13

It doesn't make sense.

2:04:14

They're up pointing down time capsule.

2:04:15

And it's a kid with a bunch of like 80s 90s stuff.

2:04:17

Yeah.

2:04:18

And she's like, this stuff is too new.

2:04:20

What's going on here?

2:04:22

And then she realizes it's her daughter.

2:04:24

Now here's why I buy this.

2:04:27

You have to remember that Jesse was a character on a TV show.

2:04:30

Sure.

2:04:31

I guess so.

2:04:32

Right.

2:04:33

What he's round up.

2:04:34

Right.

2:04:35

And he watched a lot.

2:04:37

If you named your kid Jesse after the doll you had, why put the doll on the side of the

2:04:45

road?

2:04:47

That's why I'm saying it's just a character.

2:04:49

It's the character more does that.

2:04:51

I think it's like later in life, she looked back.

2:04:54

Yeah.

2:04:55

With nostalgia for that doll and like the name.

2:04:58

Sure.

2:04:59

I think it makes sense.

2:05:00

It's like it's enough.

2:05:01

Like if Ben named his son Spawn, even though he had given away his spawn toys when he

2:05:06

was a child.

2:05:07

But technically, Spawn's son will be Spawn.

2:05:11

He will be Spawn of Haasley.

2:05:12

Yeah.

2:05:13

That's true.

2:05:14

But you could name him medieval Spawn Haasley.

2:05:16

Future Spawn Haasley.

2:05:17

I'm sure my wife would love to say.

2:05:19

You know what I'm thinking about it.

2:05:21

We should just talk about like your hypothetical future Spawn.

2:05:24

Your daughter, she spawns Haasley.

2:05:26

Future Spawn.

2:05:27

Future Spawn.

2:05:28

Future Spawn.

2:05:29

That's technically quite literally what they are.

2:05:33

This is true.

2:05:34

Your future Spawn.

2:05:35

You know, it's an exciting thing.

2:05:37

I want to do it.

2:05:38

At some point in my life have a family and I'll love the kid for whatever they are.

2:05:44

You'll love your future Spawn.

2:05:45

Yeah.

2:05:46

That will be great.

2:05:47

Maybe don't call them Spawn.

2:05:48

That's just my, just my tale.

2:05:49

Spawn's the middle name.

2:05:50

Is that better?

2:05:51

Abigail Spawn Haasley.

2:05:52

Uh, US World Cup star out.

2:05:57

Christian.

2:05:58

Yeah.

2:05:59

He will miss today's pivotal game with like that's tough news for them with a Cav injury.

2:06:04

We're dating today's episode.

2:06:06

I know this has been a freer because he'd had the he came out of the last game.

2:06:09

Well, we're this will come out like six weeks after the movie comes out, but we're recording

2:06:15

it the day the movie is technically being released because I'm about to go to Spain to

2:06:19

do a shoot.

2:06:20

He's off to Spain, the rain in Spain.

2:06:22

I've seen him mainly on the Griffin.

2:06:24

I've been feeling so suffocated by the amount of World Cup stuff and then I'm like, oh

2:06:28

right, I'm going to Spain.

2:06:30

It is going to be a lot of you feeling so, but how is it that sports guys keep fucking

2:06:36

with me?

2:06:37

You know the way the Ben says that everyone fucks with him all the time.

2:06:39

It's true.

2:06:40

This only happens to me with sports guys when they're like a vet.

2:06:44

People are like fucking with me on the subway and like because you're wearing like a choice

2:06:49

because I'm just like not an alpha male.

2:06:52

I swear to God, this happens.

2:06:53

But it's the soccer guys that are both both.

2:06:57

Because we want to talk about next fans being bullies.

2:07:00

I'm, yes, let's have that conversation.

2:07:02

I'm ready to talk.

2:07:03

I don't belong to anyone.

2:07:04

They're victories.

2:07:05

It just feels like there is a sort of sports bar culture that breaks containment when

2:07:09

things like this happen.

2:07:11

That is all I'm saying.

2:07:12

I'm so sorry that people are harassing you.

2:07:14

It's annoying.

2:07:15

David, after the screening, I left my credit card out of bar.

2:07:20

Oh, yeah.

2:07:21

That was somewhat nearby.

2:07:22

Sure.

2:07:23

You go to the bar.

2:07:24

Yeah.

2:07:25

I have a beer.

2:07:26

Yeah.

2:07:27

I have to show my ID to get the card back.

2:07:29

Our tender looks at it goes, this picture's terrible.

2:07:31

Oh, that's crazy.

2:07:32

That's crazy.

2:07:33

That's crazy.

2:07:34

So then I'm like, dude, what do you mean?

2:07:38

It's an ID picture, whatever.

2:07:40

Right.

2:07:41

It's just like you are so much more handsome.

2:07:43

Okay.

2:07:44

Maybe it's trying to hit on you.

2:07:46

Yeah, maybe this was kind of like a neggie kind of flirt.

2:07:48

I guess now actually that I'm reflecting on.

2:07:50

And then he did give you his phone number.

2:07:52

I'm hearing.

2:07:53

Well, no, because then I was like, let me see your ID picture.

2:07:55

All right.

2:07:56

I was like a flirt.

2:07:57

This is flirt, I said it looked like shit.

2:07:59

Oh, wait.

2:08:00

Now I want to see your ID picture.

2:08:01

But he started crying.

2:08:02

Yeah.

2:08:03

No, he didn't cry.

2:08:04

I did.

2:08:05

But it was there's some tension.

2:08:07

Wow.

2:08:08

Uh, no one ever looks good in their ID picture.

2:08:10

I would agree with that.

2:08:11

It's just like a rule.

2:08:12

You have to look.

2:08:13

You have to look like shit.

2:08:14

I hit some photo.

2:08:15

All right.

2:08:16

I'm going to take a look at Ben's ID photo.

2:08:17

Okay.

2:08:18

Ben's going to show us.

2:08:19

Can I see your first please?

2:08:20

Can we pass it around?

2:08:21

Yeah.

2:08:22

I think you look exactly the same.

2:08:25

I think that is an incredibly rude comment.

2:08:29

That is a handsome picture of a handsome man with a great brain.

2:08:31

I think this man was flirting with you.

2:08:35

But it is true that people just say shit to Ben.

2:08:38

It is a pretty good photo.

2:08:39

It is.

2:08:40

It is for a driver's license photo.

2:08:41

It's an accurate representation of our handsome friend.

2:08:44

Yeah.

2:08:45

But people do be fucking with people to be honest.

2:08:46

They do.

2:08:47

I've witnessed this.

2:08:48

It's wild.

2:08:49

Remember when we were in Austin, you were like, why are these guys outside of bar in

2:08:51

Austin?

2:08:52

You know, just like being mean to me for no reason.

2:08:53

I just walked down the street.

2:08:55

I'm just going to start.

2:08:56

There are definitely people who unconsciously in fight.

2:08:59

They fight.

2:09:00

They fight.

2:09:01

They fight.

2:09:02

They fight.

2:09:03

Like, kind of like you can talk to me.

2:09:04

It's okay.

2:09:05

You know what I mean?

2:09:06

Like, or like guys will just kind of, yeah, come up to you or like the sort of weird

2:09:08

guy in the park will think you're ready for a conversation.

2:09:11

Absolutely.

2:09:12

Absolutely.

2:09:13

Absolutely happens to me.

2:09:15

It feels like all the time.

2:09:17

I guess I just have one of those faces.

2:09:19

July 2015.

2:09:20

2015.

2:09:21

Going back.

2:09:22

Oh.

2:09:24

I've been to little Italy.

2:09:25

It's small.

2:09:26

Good.

2:09:27

Pretty good.

2:09:28

It's getting smaller or smaller.

2:09:33

You like the toy story movies, Ben.

2:09:36

I actually have always kind of just been like this was my question.

2:09:40

It's the one that has for whatever reason.

2:09:42

Maybe because you have this kind of future parent anxiety.

2:09:45

Maybe because you remember being a kid.

2:09:47

They get the future parent anxiety.

2:09:50

Like that it just sort of like hit you a little harder because I do feel like I'm trying

2:09:54

to remember your general toy story.

2:09:56

I had no really.

2:09:57

You were 10 when the first movie came out.

2:10:01

I'm not sad.

2:10:02

I love sad.

2:10:03

But you like him in retrospect.

2:10:05

You're like, hey, Sid, he's cool.

2:10:06

He's got a skull on his t-shirt.

2:10:08

He's creative.

2:10:09

I agree.

2:10:10

I'm personally.

2:10:11

I think I saw Toy Story one in theaters.

2:10:12

I did.

2:10:13

But you were you're a little younger than me and that's where it's right.

2:10:15

I was six.

2:10:17

But I also was very gendered at the time and I was like, this is a boy movie.

2:10:23

So I just didn't bother with it.

2:10:25

I know.

2:10:26

I kind of like this movie because it was about girl stuff.

2:10:28

I know.

2:10:29

I'm one again wondering if Jesse is my daughter's favorite character.

2:10:32

If she'll be like that movie had more Jesse.

2:10:35

Like I like that.

2:10:36

Yeah.

2:10:37

So I appreciated all of the girl stuff.

2:10:40

And that's why it really upset me when a Griffin said that people on the Toy Story

2:10:45

Reddit were calling Bonnie a C word because I think Bonnie is an incredible young woman.

2:10:50

You know, I mean, one who does that is obviously needs to touch grass.

2:10:54

When I was rewatching Toy Story 4 and watching her make forky.

2:11:00

Yes.

2:11:01

I was texting you guys and I was like, this is insane.

2:11:04

Like she is so advanced.

2:11:06

She's pretty advanced for making this thing.

2:11:08

Sure.

2:11:09

She makes forky.

2:11:10

Even the way that she writes her name on forky, like her handwriting's really good.

2:11:14

She has to have like excellent fine motor skills to like craft this thing.

2:11:18

My daughter couldn't write as well as Bonnie does.

2:11:21

She can't read but Bonnie can't read, I guess, whatever.

2:11:26

That doesn't come up.

2:11:27

I was reading at Bonnie.

2:11:28

I was reading it.

2:11:29

Yeah.

2:11:30

That's show off.

2:11:31

Sure.

2:11:32

I'm sure Bonnie coded.

2:11:33

Also, I just want to communicate to everyone what just happened in the bathroom.

2:11:36

It's going great.

2:11:44

I pushed the number one button.

2:11:46

Oh, thank God.

2:11:47

I was really, I was kidding.

2:11:48

He didn't say number one.

2:11:49

Really, really upset if you press number two and I was like, oh, Griffin.

2:11:55

Griffin, you annoyed with that toy.

2:11:57

It feels like you were a little out down by it.

2:11:59

A little bit.

2:12:00

It doesn't work as well as I wanted to.

2:12:01

We're hoping it would solve your bathroom problems.

2:12:03

Yes.

2:12:04

So, it's buying it would be the final piece of the puzzle.

2:12:07

We have had smarty pants in our studio bathroom for several.

2:12:12

Can't say I've noticed.

2:12:13

I've been eating him.

2:12:14

He's been a little easter egg in the bathroom.

2:12:16

When I saw the movie, I was like, oh, that's the weird thing that Griffin has in the bathroom.

2:12:21

The thing about art is that it was an actual potty train.

2:12:24

There's so many griffin toys.

2:12:26

You kind of get toy blindness and you kind of don't even notice them.

2:12:30

There aren't that many toys in the bathroom.

2:12:32

That's true, but I would honestly had not noticed.

2:12:35

I don't think I realized that he was meant to be a role of toilet paper.

2:12:38

Yes, which I love.

2:12:39

It's really smart design.

2:12:41

The handle on top of him is sort of like the toilet paper holder in the wall.

2:12:45

A couple of things to discuss about the movie.

2:12:48

I really loved that all of the horses got to participate.

2:12:55

Yeah, fun little counter to the Buzz Army is that the horse is right.

2:13:00

I love that Buzz gets her right a horse that's like more of a unicorn.

2:13:03

He loves it.

2:13:04

He's a lot of light up horse.

2:13:06

What did you think of the buzzes turning into drones?

2:13:09

The big third act they finally fly.

2:13:12

It's a good fucking 30 years later joke payoff.

2:13:14

The buzzes can finally fly.

2:13:15

I think I like it.

2:13:16

Because Lily feels so guilty.

2:13:19

She don't know how she's a lot of it.

2:13:21

She was long to herself.

2:13:23

She unilocks herself.

2:13:24

Which I thought into like a box.

2:13:26

I was happy that she did that because she served it.

2:13:28

No, no, I was just kind of like it like it follows in this sort of like red of these movies

2:13:34

that the toy would be like, well, I do want the child to be happy.

2:13:38

And I know I've made a machine.

2:13:40

I'm happy.

2:13:41

Yes.

2:13:42

So it's my fault.

2:13:43

I like that it's not like someone else teaches her to be good.

2:13:46

It speaks to like she actually thought she was doing the right thing.

2:13:49

She was Robert Oppenheimer.

2:13:50

That tracked for me best.

2:13:52

Right.

2:13:53

Yeah, she's like often.

2:13:54

Like Oppenheimer until they build a bigger lollipad.

2:13:56

They should have safty crying lollipad.

2:13:59

About even Bowser Jr.

2:14:01

My daughter's favorite character in all media ever.

2:14:04

Like just I mean, she talks about Bowser Jr. like Putin.

2:14:08

Where does she say she's just like that's the scariest bad guy in the world.

2:14:13

That's the most incredible bad guy.

2:14:16

She loves him so much.

2:14:17

And she thinks he's scary.

2:14:18

Well scary, but like she's she's just like that's the baddest one.

2:14:22

She thinks pretty bad.

2:14:23

You know, like and I think it's because his paintbrush is so powerful.

2:14:26

It's real.

2:14:27

She's just kind of like he owns Bowser.

2:14:29

Bowser doesn't even have a paintbrush.

2:14:31

Wow.

2:14:32

And in the second movie he's small.

2:14:33

Yeah.

2:14:34

He's mostly comic relief.

2:14:36

Yeah.

2:14:37

Whereas Bowser Jr.

2:14:38

is out here painting up a storm I guess.

2:14:39

Some character arc on Bowser in that second movie.

2:14:42

It's a little disjointed.

2:14:44

He starts off little, but desperate to prove that he's a good guy.

2:14:47

He's kind of their friend sort of.

2:14:49

He's guilty that he maybe wasn't enough of a present father.

2:14:53

Even though every night he did a bespoke puppet show for his son.

2:14:56

He's like, he feel like he was.

2:14:57

Yeah, he's putting in some effort.

2:14:59

His son is causing so much terror that he's like, I feel guilty.

2:15:02

And his son is like, Dad, I did this for you.

2:15:03

And he's like, never mind.

2:15:04

I think I've you rock only made great decisions.

2:15:07

And then all his skewering off.

2:15:09

And he's a skeleton.

2:15:10

And he says he's the Lord of bones.

2:15:12

Oh, that happens in the movie.

2:15:15

Yeah.

2:15:16

That's what happens in the movie.

2:15:18

Interesting.

2:15:19

Um, buzz, uh, drones.

2:15:22

It's basically a strong big extended final chase sequence where they have to save Lily

2:15:26

because Lily's the only way they're going to be able to finally get these two kids

2:15:29

together.

2:15:30

Right.

2:15:31

And the stakes are she wants the two of them to meet.

2:15:33

She thinks they could both use the friend.

2:15:35

I like those stakes.

2:15:36

Yeah.

2:15:37

The stakes is basically just the kind of like, can we get them to hang out and not be shy

2:15:39

with each other and kind of connect?

2:15:41

Here's another thing I thought of watching.

2:15:43

Those are some real parenting stakes.

2:15:44

Those are the stakes that inside out two tries to establish that I think it does not execute

2:15:50

well.

2:15:51

And I rewatched inside out two last night to be like, was I too hard on this at the

2:15:54

time.

2:15:55

And I think that movie shitty.

2:15:57

And I think that movie makes it too much about like fucking hockey camp and shit.

2:16:01

I don't think it's shitty.

2:16:02

I think it has a really, it's fine.

2:16:04

I think the representate, like the visual representation of what anxiety feels like I

2:16:08

thought was really meaningful to me.

2:16:10

Everything with that character works for you.

2:16:12

I wish it was gayer because I think I think that that is kind of like, sorry, David.

2:16:18

It's just really, it's just there.

2:16:20

They're, they're presexual characters in, there's a children's film.

2:16:24

No, they already establishes as crushes.

2:16:27

Yeah.

2:16:28

What's really, actually like, Riley, if if she's like a,

2:16:31

you know, a adolescent, yeah, and it felt like she had a crush on the girl on her hockey

2:16:37

stuff.

2:16:38

It really does.

2:16:39

And the girl is coded kind of.

2:16:40

Yes, but yes.

2:16:41

So I was like, okay, like that's interesting.

2:16:44

I wish they actually like had the balls to do that.

2:16:47

I know.

2:16:48

Well, maybe they should have.

2:16:49

Maybe that's what they should have done inside out too.

2:16:52

I also just don't like that the movie is once again.

2:16:54

Oh, no, they get kicked out of the console and they have to make their way back.

2:16:57

Yeah.

2:16:58

Yeah.

2:16:59

Yeah.

2:17:00

Yeah.

2:17:01

Yeah.

2:17:02

Yeah.

2:17:03

2:17:03

Yeah.

2:17:04

Yeah.

2:17:05

Yeah.

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

2:17:06

It's not very rich because it is right.

2:17:08

It is just I was like, all right, here we are in the back.

2:17:11

And we're either like, go down a road.

2:17:13

In the consular, they're not.

2:17:14

Yeah. Yeah.

2:17:16

I just never stuck.

2:17:17

My daughter ever also has never cared about them.

2:17:20

So I've only seen them like twice, like total.

2:17:22

Yeah, she doesn't like that one.

2:17:24

Maybe she will eventually.

2:17:26

Just one more important thing that we need to address,

2:17:31

Buzz and Jesse Kiss.

2:17:34

They do.

2:17:34

Yeah.

2:17:35

Yeah.

2:17:36

You didn't like that, David?

2:17:38

I don't. I just you the king of kissing on camera.

2:17:41

You love kissing their toys.

2:17:43

I just so care.

2:17:44

Let their little plastic faces.

2:17:46

What I'm not stopping.

2:17:47

Let them.

2:17:49

Don't say that.

2:17:50

Buzz is in love with Jesse because he's in love with Woody.

2:17:54

But no, you're forgetting the moment at the end of Toy Story 2 where Jesse

2:17:59

does the rescue.

2:18:01

Yeah, sure.

2:18:01

And it's he's impressed with her because she's high status.

2:18:05

That's another thing I like that this movie does that I think it does very subtly

2:18:08

is Jesse the character in the TV show.

2:18:11

Of course, her divining thing is that she talks to animals that she's a yodelink out

2:18:15

girl.

2:18:16

And she communicates with critters.

2:18:17

Right.

2:18:18

In this, they sort of imply that she has that power on real animals as well.

2:18:21

She thinks she does.

2:18:23

And yeah, maybe she does.

2:18:24

We don't have to deal to dig up the tie capsule.

2:18:27

I'm not mad about it.

2:18:28

She gets Jesse Dean to work for her.

2:18:30

Yeah.

2:18:31

But Woody does that with the with Buster.

2:18:33

Yeah.

2:18:34

And the other movies.

2:18:35

I guess it's more that it's toys can talk to animals that Jesse believes in it more because

2:18:41

that's what her right, right, her source material is.

2:18:45

But then this whole like you get your kind of final extended chase of like how do they

2:18:48

save Lily pad?

2:18:49

How are they going to get back to the respective homes?

2:18:52

But like, yeah, it's just it doesn't fall into the trap of we need to be bigger.

2:18:57

No.

2:18:58

And which I feel like four also didn't.

2:19:01

I think it's the right kind of picks our trap of like, oh my God, how do we out do our

2:19:04

sort of final set piece scale or whatever?

2:19:07

Two remains.

2:19:08

I feel like the craziest thing they ever did where they like stop a plane or whatever they

2:19:13

do.

2:19:14

But I love that they're not trying to top that.

2:19:16

No.

2:19:17

And it is just so funny for me.

2:19:18

It's my favorite gag in the movie of like, you know, they're using Atlas's GPS to try

2:19:23

to get themselves to Lily pad and they're sort of like, well, we're supposed to take

2:19:28

a left here.

2:19:29

There's a house there.

2:19:30

It used to be a road.

2:19:31

The maps out of date, what do we do?

2:19:32

And they just ride through the house and you get this tracking shot that feels like it's

2:19:36

out of weapons where they go from room to room and everyone in the family is just on a

2:19:40

different device.

2:19:41

And no one notices there are 50 buzz light years on horses riding through.

2:19:45

I think that's really funny.

2:19:46

Yes.

2:19:47

I enjoyed that.

2:19:48

So funny.

2:19:49

Yeah.

2:19:50

I was laughing.

2:19:51

You were laughing.

2:19:52

It was a time.

2:19:54

And then the film ends with what I would argue is Taylor Swift's best song in like five

2:19:59

years.

2:20:00

Let's acknowledge it ends with.

2:20:01

I don't think that's a hot thing.

2:20:02

I knew it.

2:20:03

I knew you.

2:20:04

It ends with buzz and Jesse finally getting married.

2:20:06

Yes.

2:20:07

And soon, Taylor Swift will finally get married at Madison Square Garden.

2:20:10

God.

2:20:11

I've been so stressed out.

2:20:12

I just don't get it.

2:20:13

I don't understand.

2:20:14

Also, the Taylor Swift fans keep harassing me on the subway and pizza parlors and so

2:20:19

oppressed.

2:20:20

The Omni culture.

2:20:21

But did you tell them I put hundreds of dollars in this woman's pocket because how many

2:20:26

versions of the vinyl did you buy?

2:20:28

I excuse me.

2:20:29

There were two versions I bought both.

2:20:32

I sent the receipt to the group and I was like, I hate that she's fucking got me.

2:20:37

Sure.

2:20:38

That I'm like fallen prey to this Taylor Swift shit with the countdown clock and the

2:20:42

like it's going to sell out.

2:20:43

And then a week later, I saw an article that they're going for hundreds of dollars.

2:20:46

Wow.

2:20:47

Randy Newman's quite old.

2:20:50

This is the first movie he didn't write a song for.

2:20:52

He did a score.

2:20:53

He did a score.

2:20:54

There are some new themes in it I like, but a lot of it is repurposed.

2:20:57

A lot of it's reusing previous and at the premiere, they played together.

2:21:02

You see, Randy's moving pretty slowly.

2:21:04

One of my favorite people of all time.

2:21:06

My father of course, Randy Newman.

2:21:09

But it was a pretty fucking insane coup for them to get Taylor Swift to do this.

2:21:13

What was the last time did she write a song for any movie previously?

2:21:16

For Hunger Games.

2:21:18

Right.

2:21:19

I don't know if she's done anything besides that, but I remember also liking that song

2:21:23

too.

2:21:24

She didn't write a song for Amsterdam, brutally.

2:21:27

No, she did not.

2:21:28

I mean, that's her song about how a car ran her over insane that they were like, if

2:21:32

we put Taylor Swift in this, the Swifties will go see it.

2:21:35

And you're like, what's the movie about investigating Taylor Swift's murder?

2:21:39

Maybe they don't want to see this.

2:21:41

She did, of course, do a song for 50 shades darker called I don't want to live forever.

2:21:46

Okay.

2:21:47

She did a song called Carolina for a little movie in which you heard a crad ad.

2:21:53

Oh, my God.

2:21:54

Oh, my God.

2:21:55

She crad added it up.

2:21:56

I believe she also is a co-writer on beautiful ghosts.

2:22:00

The song they did for cats.

2:22:01

Yeah.

2:22:02

You are right about that.

2:22:03

Of course, she appeared in that film as well as Bumble-Lena.

2:22:06

Bumble-Lena.

2:22:07

Bumble-Lena.

2:22:08

Bumble-Lena.

2:22:09

Do we have anything else to say about the Toy Story 5?

2:22:11

I like it a lot.

2:22:12

It made me really happy.

2:22:13

I'm glad it made you happy.

2:22:14

Yes.

2:22:15

But I also like, I keep not making you sad.

2:22:17

These which is good.

2:22:18

It's honestly the bigger thing.

2:22:20

I do feel like I've been brute force in therapy for a thousand different reasons.

2:22:24

And I'm not in a place where I was like, if this movie is bad, it's going to destroy

2:22:27

me.

2:22:28

I was joking to Ben before the movie.

2:22:30

Like I'm chill.

2:22:31

It's only my psychology at stake.

2:22:33

But I don't actually feel that way.

2:22:35

However, every time one of these movies is good, I feel a tremendous sense of relief.

2:22:40

Now, have you noticed, and it's just coming out, you know, the movie just came.

2:22:44

So it's just being like, more negative.

2:22:47

What's the reality about this movie online, then say the other one?

2:22:50

It's weird, because I've seen, like, I've seen, like, letterbox, I've seen tweets,

2:22:53

like, it's always hard now to tell, like, what's kind of fake out, right, and what's

2:22:57

real.

2:22:58

I think four was greeted more warmly and then had more negativity, like, search up later.

2:23:05

Right, yeah.

2:23:06

And then I think this one, oddly, is, like, people going, like, A, a return to form,

2:23:12

or B, they finally lost the juice.

2:23:14

Yeah.

2:23:15

It's one or the other.

2:23:16

And like my friend was like all my friends hated it and I was like and she liked it

2:23:21

But I was like hated it like how can you feel

2:23:25

It's so well made it's well done right exactly even if my note was basically

2:23:29

It's like because Jesse at the end is like it's about the journey not the destination

2:23:33

Yeah, and I'm like right that's the lesson of two. Yeah, I do feel like we're out of ideas on that front

2:23:38

So I was kind of like there's a ceiling on this movie for me quality was but like yeah, it's like it's just well done and like

2:23:44

I had a good time watching it. I can't really be too mad at it

2:23:47

You know especially because these movies are just gonna continue to happen

2:23:50

These movies continue to struggle with how expansive two was thematically right that it just bit off so much

2:23:57

Successfully that there's not as much left for them to explore

2:24:00

But I thought this movie had like many new ideas it had a new concept. Yes

2:24:06

It comes to an old idea, but the tech stuff

2:24:09

I was like I appreciate just running at an idea like that. I thought that was good

2:24:14

It's what I said in my review, which is on the Atlantic you can hear it if you want. How would you rank the stand?

2:24:18

Yeah, it's about to oh good call. Yeah, cuz it's gonna be our our last episode

2:24:21

So yeah, true now you have to make them it out. Can I pitch my idea for the next and the toy story franchise?

2:24:29

We need to know which which Griffin do you think there will be a toy story six this

2:24:35

The fact that they don't even attempt to

2:24:40

Make some sort of here's the end of the series. Yeah finale to this. I think it's all but guaranteed

2:24:45

I hope they continue to pace them out the way they have

2:24:49

It's nice that these movies are coming out every two years. Yeah, sure

2:24:53

Okay, it's more of a prequel the first toy story sticking hoop

2:24:58

This is a well you like to go to I

2:25:02

Like to go almost prehistoric

2:25:04

Yeah, but I think it would be interesting

2:25:06

Keep going. It's like a rock. It's a rock. Okay. Yep, and like mud

2:25:10

Yeah, and it's like you know primitive people and it's like the blurring the like what it isn't mean to be a toy like as the first

2:25:19

Toy but that sort of feels like forkey territory if it's like I made a toy out of some stuff and now what is play

2:25:26

Right? And

2:25:29

Toy game consciousness childhood is a modern concept. Yes. This is true

2:25:33

That's why I think it's got to be like you know 20th century stickin hoop and it's a toy that's really nauseous all the time

2:25:40

It's like I'm just fucking chased

2:25:43

But you see like ancient Roman

2:25:47

You know dolls or right like we we unearth these things sometimes I guess I do do that a lot love that you love that

2:25:53

And it's not an accusation or

2:25:55

It's made six films

2:25:58

Correct, I'm not missing anything. Yes, so I have a ranked thusly from one to six

2:26:03

Okay, Wally

2:26:05

Finding Nemo toy story five finding Dory John Carter in the blink of an eye. I'm sorry John. Yeah

2:26:13

The ambition of John Carter is higher than the than the animated sequels sure

2:26:19

I I can't get there with I think it's better than the animated sequels which are two movies where I'm like

2:26:25

Obviously these are no masterpiece is what they're well done enough that I consider them better than John Carter

2:26:30

I think I think I have the same rank, but I have it over in the blink of an eye. Yeah, I go

2:26:37

Wally then finding Nemo then I go to a story five then finding Dory of the same

2:26:44

Ray John Carter and and unfortunately we're gonna end with a blank I think that's where one must yes one must

2:26:50

Marie do you prefer like Nemo to Wally do you have a hot take on these lists? No, I love Wally. I'm very curious to rewatch John Carter

2:26:59

I saw it opening weekend at the Ziggfeld it was like the last movie

2:27:02

I saw at the Ziggfeld before it closed down and there were like five people in the entire theater and

2:27:08

Like one of them was Rob Malone, you know

2:27:14

Some weeks in advance and I asked the question on the episode is there any chance I like the Mandalorian and Grogu more than John Carter

2:27:21

And I can definitively say no, I think John Carter is better than the last three theatrically really Star Wars movies sure

2:27:28

Definitely last two

2:27:33

So I want to fuck that Troy no, it's I like the what's the lady proxy lady proxy mo the original skimble shanks

2:27:43

But I remember like defending John Carter at the time and being like this movie's good at it's got stuff in it

2:27:49

I it's fun to defend even if it doesn't completely work

2:27:54

But that's been our

2:27:55

Interesting journey and now of course

2:27:57

We're going on to Martin Scorscheese that's so true. It's actually right on to him right on to him

2:28:03

We've recorded a good chunk of them. Yeah, we've recorded eight Martin Scorsese episodes already out of you dirt jerks

2:28:10

23 yeah, we've done about a third. Yeah, my estimation. Yeah, I'm Italian. We're working on it

2:28:15

I think I think our pizza might be here. Hold on. Sure. Yes. I'm sure it was delivered long ago

2:28:23

I just hate this is gripping calling from the and I was like I wonder how he's ending that sentence

2:28:30

Okay, thank you

2:28:32

I pulled a sams

2:28:34

Did you it delivered to your house? Yes, but my house is very close

2:28:38

See I could have stuck your house is a mac than whatever

2:28:41

I was very close. I mean, it's pretty close. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're hungry. So let's end the episode and I'll go get the pizza all right

2:28:47

Yeah, I'm just gonna say the little dispoying they didn't do a bad bunny pizza

2:28:53

I did see nighthawk they are I will be ordering it special is the

2:28:57

Oh, maybe I'll get that yeah, they have a flat bread pizza with sunglasses flat bread

2:29:01

They got a new what's it called a paedina?

2:29:04

Italian flatbread sandwich. Oh, yeah, I saw that on the menu

2:29:08

I got a term-member movie. It's got a ham and mango. It's that's the

2:29:13

And it's sort of like a fun like Hawaiian pizza

2:29:17

Yeah, yeah, it's a better version of a lion right? I love I

2:29:21

Love it. Maybe I should get this

2:29:25

But Ben's taking a buzz light ear this is the bucket we got yesterday when we saw the movie. Oh

2:29:31

Bucket yeah, it's pretty good. Oh, it's the high-tech buzz in the package and you can take the buzz out to put the popcorn in yeah, it's like these

2:29:40

God these things get so elaborate now

2:29:42

Yeah, like we're just the popcorn yeah, yeah, yeah

2:29:44

It's really nice. It's very fancy. Yeah, but we're gonna end this episode so I can get pizzas or a final thing you want to say Marie

2:29:50

I'm just wondering like this you know

2:29:53

Toy story 4 definitely felt like a Woody and Bo Peep side adventure. This is a Jesse side adventure right where do they go next because I feel like

2:30:01

Do they go back to the buzz well?

2:30:04

Or is there what is the next character to get their own well the NTs of course is that the the high-tech buzzes have

2:30:13

Drown their way down to a playground to find themselves a bunch of kids and then high-tech Zerg is revealed

2:30:19

Yes, I couldn't wait to find out with that the greatest villain voice by no the greatest villain is Bowser Jr

2:30:25

But right Andrew Stanton understand. Yes, I learned that from the fine anymore. Was there a second post credits thing?

2:30:31

Yes, we missed it bad bunny bad bunny and forky wrapping along with all the other toys. It's pretty fucking great

2:30:38

It's actually great

2:30:40

I would call it a bump

2:30:42

Cool. Yeah, that's great. Yeah, but like what is your as someone who's very dialed into this? What do you think?

2:30:47

Just were you happy?

2:30:50

I know it's just like I feel like that's just it's just you're just no I was just

2:30:54

We just want you to be happy Christmas. Yes, and you major. Are you major smile? I major smiles. Stand and stand and strong stand and tall

2:31:02

No, I think the big thing is and and this is another thing I hold against three is like three is the movie

2:31:07

I imagined would be the third movie and four and five and two all did things I never could have guessed

2:31:14

And that's what I like about the series and I think that's what stands really smart at is he continues to kind of sit down and not go like

2:31:21

A to B on the story stories now this is a Ben Hossley tweet from November

2:31:27

So this is before blank check wow he maybe knows us a little bit. Okay

2:31:34

Writing a prequel to the movie my girl about the bees

2:31:37

This is what I'm saying he's always done this well. Yes. He does want the first you love a prequel art

2:31:43

I guess I want to I want to know where it started yeah

2:31:48

In a behi and where did this podcast start what is the prequel to blank check why of course it's the phantom menace

2:31:55

That's so true. It all comes back to pre-house. That was the beehive of our

2:32:00

10-year-long allergic pack that has been this movie. I'm gonna go get these pizzas. He's so hung

2:32:05

Thank you all for listening. Please remember to rate review and subscribe next week is who's that knocking in my door and box car birth
