1:17

What's up everybody?

1:18

It is the ringer NFL show Tom Pellicero, Shield Capati, a Billy Gill joining the momentarily.

1:26

Are the Falcons the best team in the NFL?

1:29

If you had no frame reference and all you did was watch two straight national TV performances, you might think this looks like a really tough team.

1:40

When we make it the Saints, when we make it that division, after Bryce Young lit it up as well, we'll talk about all that on the show.

1:48

I'll also talk about some of the big moments from Sunday.

1:51

Shields got his after further review or under further review upon further review.

1:57

It's something like that.

1:59

It's got a segment.

1:59

Some of the big topics that we really should be talking about.

2:02

We got quarterback injuries.

2:04

We got quarterback bounce backs.

2:06

Lots more starts after this.

2:08

This is the ringer NFL show presented by Fandall, make every NFL week more rewarding with Fandall rewards club.

2:58

So at the time we all decided on the group text that it was probably just we were ready to start the podcast.

3:06

With about six minutes left on the clock.

3:08

Falcons 422 yards of offense, five touchdowns in the box score by B Robinson, either B. John or Brian.

3:17

And if you woke up and had a fantasy game that need to be sorted out, you might have to do a little further investigation.

3:23

Let's just put it this way, Shield.

3:25

The Falcons are the first two weeks with Cooper rush, the third stringer, a quarterback.

3:31

Completely different in every regard since Michael Penn, X Jr. got back.

3:37

And I would say Michael, X Jr. has been solid.

3:40

He's tonight's game against the Saints.

3:43

I think it was about as efficient if we've seen him play, but it just seems like having him there has unlocked everything else.

3:50

And they look like a real team that you got at least talking about in the playoff conversation.

3:56

Yeah, different doesn't feel strong enough.

3:57

I mean, it's a reminder of how quickly things can change those first two weeks were two of the worst offensive performances by any team in games this season.

4:07

The last two weeks have literally been top 10 performances league wide for any offense in a game this season.

4:13

They look unstoppable.

4:15

I mean, when they don't score, it's almost been a surprise these last two weeks.

4:18

So I was making jokes about archvanting wanting to play for the Falcons, maybe next year, two weeks ago.

4:25

And now I sort of think that the Falcons are the favorites in the NFC South.

4:29

So yes, things can change quickly.

4:31

It's only week four.

4:32

Thanks will change by week six, week eight, week 10 and so on.

4:35

But for no team or so, then the Falcons in the first month of the season.

4:40

Yeah, we were joking for weeks.

4:42

How this is a team that could be getting arch and solving their quarterback problem.

4:45

And it seems like they had their solution the whole time.

4:48

They've had their quarterback.

4:49

It's Michael Pennix and he just wasn't.

4:52

He wasn't well, but now he is well.

4:54

And they'd look like a totally different team.

4:55

I mean, I think, Jill, you're right.

4:58

They're probably the favorite in the division.

5:00

And it's obviously reactionary after two weeks and after one, like blow out game.

5:04

But we also thought that the Saints were a nice little story, you know, a couple of weeks ago.

5:09

And they completely blew the Saints out.

5:11

We watched yesterday where the Panthers had a nice Sunday night football performance.

5:14

Like this could be a team that could make some noise.

5:17

It could be a fun little team.

5:18

And now the Falcons a day later, like, I don't know about this.

5:20

Panthers game.

5:21

I don't know about you guys.

5:22

I was looking at the calendar, I was looking at the schedule.

5:24

They already played once, but I've already gone to week 18 and I've circled that.

5:28

And I said, you know what?

5:29

This might be a game that gets flexed into the Sunday night football game.

5:33

The division is on the line.

5:34

And I think it's, I know it's just we've fought, right?

5:37

But what game is that?

5:38

You're saying you're saying Falcons, Panthers?

5:40

Falcons, Panthers.

5:41

I mean, the NSC North could be on the line.

5:43

Like a live onsite pod or something.

5:46

Tom, Tom, live onsite pod.

5:50

I don't know if we do have the budget for that yet.

5:53

I'm not sure we're getting there.

5:54

We'll slowly close to it.

5:56

Layin L or where's that where the Charlotte?

5:58

Yeah, I could probably make a little road trip.

6:01

You'll find it.

6:01

I'll try to make some content.

6:03

Well, we'll put on the back burner for now, I guess.

6:05

Yeah.

6:06

Uh, Saints meanwhile, that was rough.

6:09

This was the team that I think a lot of people.

6:11

It was kind of the hip team to be into, right?

6:14

Based on how they finished last season.

6:16

I mean, I thought Tyler Schuck, who was under total duress, the entire game.

6:21

I was impressed by how well he moved around.

6:23

I mean, he easily could have been sound how many times he was sacked in the end,

6:26

but could have been sacked twice then many.

6:28

Could have getting himself out of, you know, bad situations.

6:31

Chris Alave played well in that game.

6:33

The Saints defense though.

6:35

I know that it's hard just like we saw with the Packers,

6:38

when you're trying to tackle B. John Robinson, it's easier said than done.

6:41

Shield, but it just on a night that it was supposed to be this celebration.

6:45

And maybe it's just made more on the broadcast than it is in person,

6:48

but it seemed like the crowd, you know, was amped up.

6:51

I'm not even sure.

6:52

Trombone Shorty at half time had the night.

6:55

Uh, he was expecting based on how subdued that crowd had to be just the defense

6:59

got absolutely, you know, ripped to shreds in this game.

7:03

Which again, B. John's doing that to people.

7:05

But if you're the Saints now and you're one in three,

7:09

then there's some concerns that you're, you're having to address.

7:12

I would think on that side of the ball.

7:14

It's the worst game in the season.

7:16

You're right.

7:16

It came at a bad time where the crowds amped up and you're on national TV.

7:20

This isn't the team they've been through the first three weeks of the season.

7:23

I mean, they were very competitive against Detroit.

7:25

That came down to the last play.

7:27

They go to Baltimore and win that game.

7:29

So I'm with you.

7:30

I still think they have something they can hang their hat on most weeks,

7:33

which is their passing game and Chuck's going to push the ball down field.

7:38

And the receivers are going to get be good.

7:40

Maybe they get Jordan Tyson back at some point this season to add kind of

7:43

a third pass catcher there.

7:45

But yeah, I think they're better than they showed today.

7:47

I don't think they're going to be a team that just gets blown out weekend and

7:51

week out.

7:51

Because I think the passing game's going to be good enough to keep them in a lot of

7:54

these games.

7:57

Meanwhile, as we sit here, I just say Tweet is 123 left.

8:01

And apparently Chris Lave just got hurt.

8:03

Why is Chris Lave in the game that they're down 28 points on?

8:09

That's something I don't get.

8:10

That is like a league wide thing that I don't get where coaches have this

8:14

mentality of, you know, because they're preaching all week.

8:17

We're in a fight to the final whistle.

8:18

Defend every plate of grass.

8:20

And then I watch some of these games that are blowouts.

8:22

And sometimes it happens with the team that's winning, you know, Kyle Shanahan for

8:26

all his greatness up yelling at the TV at times.

8:28

Christian McAfry does not need to be getting a carry in the fourth quarter.

8:32

And there's always at least one of these every season.

8:35

Hopefully this one's not serious, but coaches do it anyway.

8:38

Yeah, I don't really understand that.

8:40

It's a league wide thing.

8:42

Well, keep an eye on that.

8:43

I normally I wouldn't just bring up a tweet in the middle of a recorded podcast,

8:46

but since we're literally talking about how the game was over, I'm struggling to

8:51

find the explanation for how a guy with his injury history would still be on the

8:55

field.

8:56

You know, through news, it's just cut it to 22.

8:59

I don't know if we should write this one up just yet.

9:02

He seems okay.

9:03

Took a, he took a hit and walking it off.

9:05

Quoting Nick Underhill.

9:06

So crisis subverted on that point.

9:10

There is something to be said for the panic that ensues in September about a variety of

9:15

different things.

9:16

And everyone buried the Falcons, obviously, out of the gate.

9:19

People buried the Patriots, buried Drake May to a degree that seemed, I don't know,

9:25

a little bit presumptuous three games into a season with the AFC champs.

9:30

And they come out in Buffalo.

9:31

I tried in the suite on subset.

9:34

Of course, you can subscribe to to tamp down some of that.

9:37

She'll talk to a lot of people familiar with what's going on.

9:41

There was not like panic about Drake.

9:44

You know, it's shoulder, it's variable.

9:47

It's like, so it's none of that stuff.

9:48

Like it's not playing well.

9:50

He's had a little bit of bad luck, bad decisions.

9:52

He's pressing.

9:53

He still had a couple in that game against Buffalo.

9:57

But you saw the real Drake May in the second half.

9:59

The same guy that everybody fell in love with a year ago.

10:02

That's a Patriots team that's still going to be really well coach.

10:06

They went in there and made statements.

10:07

I thought on both sides, the ball shield and all of a sudden now,

10:10

I mean, I think you at least have to have the real conversation of are the

10:13

Patriots or the bills.

10:15

Again, they just face off head to head.

10:17

But who's the favorite in that division?

10:19

Yeah, you had written that, you know, it's, it's had nothing to do with the

10:22

shoulder.

10:23

Like you mentioned, it's bad luck.

10:26

He's pressing.

10:27

He's making bad decisions.

10:28

It felt to me reading that like art.

10:30

It's between the years a little bit.

10:31

And I thought it was so interesting how they approached this game where early on,

10:35

they had a fourth and three where you can kick the field goal, you know, get on the

10:38

point, you're get on the board, you're on the road.

10:41

And they go for it.

10:42

And he gets it.

10:43

And in the third quarter to tight game again, they could say, all right, let's go ahead,

10:46

kick the field goals fourth and three.

10:47

And they're like, no, let's go for it and put it in our quarterbacks.

10:50

Hand even the last possession they have where they're trying to ice the game away.

10:54

A lot of teams in that situation are thinking just run the ball, make the other team use

10:58

timeouts, run the clock.

11:00

And they came out throwing it.

11:01

And he's, you know, play action bootleg and he completes the past there.

11:04

So it felt like there was so much in that game organizationally that they wanted to remind

11:09

him. We believe in you.

11:11

Remember the guy you were last year, you're still that guy, your shoulders fine.

11:16

You've made it.

11:16

You've had a few bad games here.

11:18

It's okay.

11:18

It's week four.

11:19

And just watching main the first three weeks, like just watching him talk to the media

11:23

and that kind of thing.

11:24

You're like, kind of is confidence does seem to be a little bit shot for a guy who said

11:28

so much success so early in his career.

11:31

But I think what they did it worked out.

11:33

He played well, like you said, we could always spend this one of, you know, different ways,

11:37

Billy, because there's like like he throws an interception.

11:40

You know, he has a fumble.

11:41

He had multiple fumbles in that game.

11:43

They, they recover one of them.

11:45

If FDN Chism doesn't make a one handed grab, are we having the same conversations?

11:49

Incredible, Caz, we might be having conversations like, oh, you know,

11:52

may add a couple turnovers there.

11:54

Patriots lose another close one, but that's not the reality.

11:58

And I think that's big for his confidence and obviously big for their season.

12:01

It seemed to be a point of emphasis to what you were saying is that they were reminding

12:05

him all week like, hey, these are the quarterbacks.

12:07

You're at that level with them.

12:08

You're at the Josh Allen level.

12:10

You're at the same level all these are quarterbacks.

12:12

You said the three fumbles.

12:13

He only lost one of them.

12:14

I mean, that's luck.

12:15

The interception completely not his fault.

12:17

Like that was one of the flukiest intercepted you've ever seen where he throws the ball.

12:21

It's not a good throw, but it was a fluke.

12:24

Yeah, I mean, what happened?

12:26

Dogs has to make a miraculous catch, which he kind of does.

12:30

Then hits the ground.

12:30

The ball bounces out goes right to a bill, which at the time was also bad luck because they

12:35

look like they were going to go into the half and they were going to be leading it 14 to

12:38

seven.

12:39

And then there's a late touchdown by the bills.

12:40

And I said, OK, it's going to be tied.

12:42

Maybe we drive here.

12:43

We go to the half with the lead.

12:44

We make it 17 14 patrons.

12:46

And then there's that turnover.

12:47

They return it like 30 yards, whatever gets right into the field of range.

12:51

Then they take the lead and it's 17 14 like, oh, here we go again with the Patriots.

12:55

But I mean, aside from that, he had a pretty good game.

12:59

It's the best game that he's had.

12:59

He hadn't had a touchdown since week one.

13:02

So he was kind of straightening things out.

13:04

And then on the other side in that game, Josh Allen is now starting to find the turnovers

13:10

that he was not finding earlier on in the season that it's like, oh, Josh kind of makes

13:14

these bone headed plays so much so that there was a play.

13:17

And I'm sure you guys know the play that I'm talking about where Josh Allen seemingly

13:21

was going to get sacked in the end zone for a safety and decided instead of taking the

13:25

sack, he was facing the end zone just through it backwards, not looking at all, just

13:31

he did backwards to, I guess, create an incompletion which could have easily been intercepted,

13:37

returned pick six, whatever.

13:38

It could have gone disaster.

13:39

It didn't.

13:41

And the only reason no one is criticizing it is because it's Josh Allen.

13:44

Like, ah, it's Josh Allen.

13:46

Where if like Drake may had tried that play with how he had been playing and they had

13:49

up losing the game, they would have been crushing Drake and said, what a bone had.

13:53

If James Winston would have done this like, oh, classic, James, like, what is his bone

13:57

headed play where Josh just gets the benefit of the doubt now.

14:00

And that's where we're trying to get Drake may too, I think is where he can just do these

14:04

things.

14:05

Like, ah, he'll be fine.

14:06

It's just Drake being Drake.

14:07

Well, Josh, yeah, go ahead.

14:09

No, I was going to say Josh has sort of earned that right.

14:12

Yeah, that's a nice.

14:13

Yeah.

14:14

He's a reckless player.

14:16

Like, it works out.

14:18

And he then sets the record for franchise for touchdowns and rushing and all of this

14:23

and that and it's like, oh, what a tough guy.

14:24

But it's like, these are dumb plays that you shouldn't be making, Josh.

14:27

You kind of need to clean up at some point.

14:29

I've never seen a ball, you know, dirt and so to speak in that manner before because

14:34

he throws a full on pass.

14:36

The reason it doesn't get called, I think for for intentional grounding is because he

14:41

is outside the pocket and he's somehow got the ball back to the line of scrimmage back

14:46

hand in underhand.

14:47

I mean, I'm not going to sit here and credit him too much for an incompletion, but like

14:52

he does seem to have shield like this sixth sense of, here's why get away with it what

14:56

I can't.

14:57

But when the turnovers are coming for Josh, sometimes they come in bunches.

15:00

Yeah, that last week with what five turnovers as a team against the chargers and then again,

15:05

the Patriots, you know, listen, they stepped up on both sides of the ball and that came.

15:09

Yeah, it's like one of those things.

15:10

You try to make a change in your life, Billy.

15:12

You know, and you know, for me, it's like, all right, don't be just rummaging the cabinet

15:18

with the kid snacks at 1130 when you're waiting to record a podcast and go in there and grab

15:23

the cookies.

15:24

That's not going to be like good for you.

15:25

And you know, for like maybe four weeks, you do it well.

15:28

And then the next week, you're in there and you're in that's Josh Allen.

15:31

He's still got, you know, his thing is he's playing every snap, like it's fourth down

15:36

and the super bowls on the line.

15:38

It doesn't matter what week it is.

15:39

It doesn't matter what's the score is.

15:41

It doesn't matter who the opponent is.

15:43

And so he can't totally turn that off.

15:44

He's turned off a lot of that, I think, but you still, yeah, you'll get one or two of

15:49

those every game, every couple of games, but to Tom's point, he more than makes up for

15:55

it.

15:56

Most of the time, now to your point, if that's a playoff game, like last year, he did

15:59

kind of do that in the playoffs before halftime and it cost him.

16:02

So I don't think your point is with, you know, without a, is totally invalid there.

16:07

But yeah, you will see those from time to time.

16:09

But I mean, he's Josh.

16:10

So like, it's kind of like you take the go with the bet, right?

16:12

He's going to do it.

16:13

Some cookies.

16:14

Let him eat some cookies.

16:15

Yeah.

16:16

Yeah.

16:17

He's still healthy, which that alone puts you above some of the other, the other teams

16:22

that you have right now.

16:23

We saw a lot in the NFC this past weekend.

16:27

It's Lamar who goes down with what I can only call it.

16:30

I mean, at this point, it's the Lamar.

16:32

It's he's either hurt or he's sick or there's something going on.

16:37

It seems kind of confusing and maybe you'll play this week or maybe we don't see him

16:40

for a month.

16:41

Like that happens every single year in that game.

16:46

You don't see like anything.

16:47

I mean, obviously, there went back and saw a replay.

16:49

But there was no clear indication.

16:51

She'll initially that he's hurt.

16:53

Then he's on the sideline.

16:54

Then apparently, they're time up going, going back in the game.

16:57

At some point, he leaves the sideline, not to be seen again.

17:01

And now, I mean, Jesse Mitter didn't sell any guy.

17:02

It was really confident that Lamar is going to play this week, which if he doesn't, they

17:08

actually gave Tyler Snewpully some money this year to be the backup quarterback.

17:12

But you have to ask this because of the history, the some guys who like, they always seem

17:16

to come right back.

17:17

They say, his teammate Kyle Hamilton comes back two minutes after every major injury.

17:22

Lamar, there isn't history here.

17:24

It just makes me wonder what exactly is this looking like and similar to last year with Lamar

17:29

suffering injury early in the season and then didn't ever seem to get back to 100%.

17:33

I just wonder based on his game, how much that type of an injury is going to impact

17:38

17:38

There's always some mystery to it.

17:40

There's no doubt about it.

17:42

And sometimes when coaches answer injury questions, they're being intentionally vague.

17:46

And sometimes it sort of sounds like they don't know with Jesse Mitter was like, no, he

17:50

doesn't really sound like he knows when Lamar Jackson is going to be back here.

17:54

I know the media that were there, the beat reporter said he left the stadium with a boot on

17:59

his left foot.

18:00

And so it just adds this degree of mystery uncertainty to the Raven season.

18:04

And the fact of the matter is Lamar Jackson's been playing like an MVP candidate.

18:08

I don't think we've talked about it a lot on this podcast because they haven't had the

18:12

most highly publicized games or most exciting games so far.

18:17

But he's been incredible even in that game in Declan Doyle's offense.

18:20

I mean, I think he had a string of 11 straight completions at one point in the first half.

18:24

He was 15 for 20 for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the first half before he left the game.

18:31

So it is sort of a big deal that it's going to have an impact on the AFC playoff

18:36

picture in the league because I'm not sure how good that Raven's team is without Lamar

18:41

Jackson.

18:42

It really feels like he's kind of lifted everybody up the offensive line, Zay flowers,

18:47

the other members of that offense.

18:49

So yeah, that I mean, it might be the biggest story in the NFL.

18:52

Honestly, this week, just not knowing when Lamar Jackson's going to be back with the

18:56

Ravens.

18:57

It's your point, Tom.

18:59

It's the exact same week he got hurt initially last year too.

19:01

So it really is right around week four.

19:04

He's been getting an injury.

19:05

We don't know, but like, they got a big one next week because they're going to be playing

19:09

the Falcons on Sunday night football.

19:11

So now that we've seen the Falcons are one of the best teams in the NFL, is this something

19:15

that you can kind of go into without them because when you get injured against the Titans,

19:18

you can kind of say like, okay, well, Stupon Lee's here.

19:21

He can kind of take us the rest away even though it ended up being a one-score game.

19:24

But that's like a game that you don't want to risk him getting injured again.

19:27

But when you have these World-Beater Falcons coming with Michael Penix, I want to, you

19:31

know, maybe I would dare say a challenge on the NFC to when the NFC championship, I think

19:36

you'd want to be full strength coming into it.

19:38

Would you not?

19:39

Well, that's always the thing too, is with Lamar, with some guys who keel fast, the other

19:45

guys who seem to need a lot of time to be able to actually get back to 100%.

19:50

His game is unique because of the mobility aspect of it.

19:53

You know, the some core best, like, I mean, Justin Herbert, who we can talk about that

19:57

situation too since Jim Harboss said that was the grittiest game he's ever seen as the

20:01

chargers took a fourth consecutive loss.

20:04

Like Herbert just tapes it up and goes, even if he's not, but that's because he doesn't

20:08

have to move that much.

20:09

He's not Guy who relies upon his legs.

20:12

It's just, you know, with Lamar, there's always that aspect of like the stuff that scares

20:17

you.

20:18

He's a thoroughbred.

20:20

Like he's got to be able to run.

20:22

If he can't, it just, it hampers everything else that he's doing.

20:26

And that was Lamar we saw.

20:27

I think we talked about this on one of the first shows I did with you guys.

20:30

Like, we didn't see the real Lamar last year because once he got that injury, he never

20:35

seemed to be at full torque again.

20:36

I'm not saying that's going to be the same case here, but TBD, how long it takes here,

20:41

because what you don't want to do is what happened a year ago, frankly, which is Lamar

20:44

goes out there and is just kind of 85% for three quarters of season.

20:51

That's not a recipe that I don't think anybody wants to see.

20:53

Yeah, he's got the different layers to his game.

20:56

He obviously can carve you up from the pocket.

20:58

We've seen him targeting the middle of the field, making incredible plays down field.

21:02

But then you had that added element of creativity, of scrambling, of being used even in the

21:07

design run game when necessary.

21:09

That makes him even more dangerous there.

21:11

So hopefully, yeah, like you said, get a little timeline on this baby.

21:15

See when he comes back and when he comes back, he looks like the guy we saw through the

21:19

first three and a half weeks, because like I said, that has been easily one of the best

21:23

quarterbacks in the NFL so far.

21:25

Somewhere between day to day and week to week, I think, it'll be, it's like a four

21:31

and a two weeks.

21:32

That's what it seems like.

21:35

It's like one day to be day to day, one day to be week to week.

21:37

This is just life in Lamar world.

21:41

Five teams were on three, five teams are now on four.

21:45

Chargers remain in my mind, most shocking story in the NFL, even though we knew Billy that

21:53

there might be some complications, messing personalities and philosophies with Jim Harba

21:59

and Mike McDaniel, like scale of one, everything's going to be okay to 10 absolute five alarm

22:05

fire.

22:06

Where are you right now on the trajectory of the LHRG.

22:10

I think I would say a confident seven, maybe, maybe higher.

22:17

It's not like all out panic just yet, but we're getting closer to it.

22:21

I'd say seven or eight.

22:22

Now that I'm talking eight, let's go eight because I don't know if you saw the post game

22:27

press conference where they started talking to Harbaugh and they were basically asking him

22:31

about Mike McDaniel's job security and he gave like a very non-answer to it.

22:38

And then they had to follow him and they're like, so is this job in jeopardy?

22:41

He totally didn't understand the question or didn't want to give a full answer.

22:46

No, no, no, he's perfectly fine.

22:49

There's nothing to see here.

22:50

Everything's good.

22:51

But it's kind of like, it's just in her we're getting worse as the season is going on

22:56

because it seems like he's not getting better.

22:59

This game was not very good.

23:01

You had two more interceptions.

23:02

He had less than 200 yards.

23:04

He lost another fumble.

23:06

I'm starting to get concerned and we've talked about it.

23:09

We've done the schedule a bunch of times, but it doesn't get any easier for them.

23:13

They have the Broncos and the Chiefs and they have a buy and they have maybe the healthy

23:17

Rams and Texans Ravens.

23:19

It's, I mean, the season's ending for them very quickly if they don't start winning here

23:23

and they just keep losing.

23:25

They're headed for a relevancy.

23:27

Like we've talked about them probably more so than any other team this season because

23:31

to what Tom said, they've been probably the biggest story, the biggest disappointment

23:34

in the NFL so far.

23:36

But I just, I don't think they're going to be in it with that schedule and with the way

23:40

they're playing.

23:41

And even Herbert's game against the Seahawks, like I'm flipping around our, this game's

23:45

over this 27 6 and then I go back and watch it today.

23:49

And the second half is the version of Justin Herbert that everybody who is a Justin Herbert

23:54

fan is like, oh, there's something there.

23:56

He's scrambling around.

23:57

He's getting out of the pocket.

23:58

He's chucking the football 40 yards down field and I thought, this is garbage time stats

24:02

who cares.

24:03

I think at the ball back and they have a chance to actually drive and score a touchdown

24:07

in Seattle against the defending champs and tie the game and he gets hit from his blind

24:12

side and fumbles there.

24:14

So I mean, my big question because I think Tom, you've made the case before and it's a good

24:18

one that the best course for the chargers might be to just be like, let cooler heads prevail.

24:25

This was the first year with Mike McDaniel.

24:27

Jim Harboss on a big contract.

24:29

They're not going to want to pay him to go away.

24:32

He's not going to want to go away and give up that money.

24:34

You're not trading Justin Herbert.

24:36

Give the whole operation another chance in 2027.

24:41

And I think that that like if you take a step back, like if you were like, all right,

24:45

let's be rational about this.

24:46

I actually think that could make sense.

24:48

But the way this is going with the losses piling up and that dynamic between McDaniel

24:54

and Harboss, like, are they going to all sign up for that for another year?

24:59

But this season continues to go down the tubes.

25:02

I mean, that's really my biggest question with the chargers right now.

25:05

Right now you are just trying to throw baking soda on the grease fire, like just put it

25:11

out.

25:12

You have two games before the buy.

25:13

Just find a win.

25:15

Any win.

25:16

And then maybe we can cobble it together and make some adjustments, make a run.

25:19

Well, they're going to have to reassess that the buy on like a global level is, are we tracking

25:26

the right direction in the big picture with this offense, with this coordinator?

25:31

And that's not to say, if not, you fire my bidet immediately.

25:34

But if you decide like, we need to make changes not because of 2026, but beyond your

25:41

basic admitting, you completely screwed this up in the off season.

25:46

You made the biggest move that you can make as a head coach, which is fire in your offensive

25:50

coordinator, fire in your offensive line coach.

25:53

They kept basically all the other assistant coaches, which is a little bit unusual, but

25:57

they bring in a new coordinator and a new offensive line coach to try to take Justin

26:02

Herbert to the next level.

26:04

If you come to the conclusion, Billy, that it's done the opposite.

26:08

And you have actually taken Justin Herbert back.

26:12

That's more in my mind and indictment on the entire decision making process than it

26:16

is on Mike McDaniel.

26:18

Like presumably you had a plan.

26:21

Here's how this is going to work.

26:22

You would have thought it would be accelerated faster than this.

26:26

If you're seeing though, when you go back into that tape that, hey, all right, there is

26:29

growth.

26:30

We're not winning, but we're growing.

26:32

Then take the season, ride it out.

26:34

Don't make major changes.

26:35

Don't change the play collar.

26:36

Don't fire us.

26:37

Just ride it out and see.

26:40

Can you keep making those games?

26:41

Because maybe in 2027, you're going to be playing at a high level.

26:45

I go back to Kyle Shanahan's first year in Atlanta, where now they won games out of the

26:52

gate.

26:53

Like Matt Ryan was not happy.

26:55

Him and Kyle Shanahan did not see eye to eye because Matt had always been full control

26:58

with the line of scrimmage.

27:00

And I can check and I can make all these things happen.

27:02

Kyle was like, no, you're going to be a robot.

27:05

I'm going to get people open.

27:07

You're going to throw the ball to the right guy.

27:08

And that's not how Matt had played the game.

27:10

Well, you're two and he becomes the MVP.

27:12

Again, different situation because the Falcons were winning games at least early in that season

27:17

while they were figuring it out, Billy.

27:19

But you have to think of this.

27:20

It's not just the short term.

27:21

Everybody wants their pint of blood here when things are going wrong.

27:25

But you have to go, right?

27:26

Did we completely mess this up?

27:28

If we did, then yes, make wholesale changes.

27:31

But if we think this is still like, it's just not coming along as fast as we want, we

27:35

think it's the right thing.

27:37

Right now, it's the other rest of the season goes and then make them more informed, less

27:42

to rest in the season when they get to the end of it.

27:45

To Shiel's point, Herbert was getting better as the game went on.

27:48

So the game started as bad as it could.

27:49

He throws an interception first play.

27:51

Then they get the ball right back to Sam Tharn, decided to throw an interception to.

27:55

Then they were down 21.

27:57

They were down 27 to 6.

27:58

He got them back in the game and had a chance to tie the game or potentially win the game

28:03

and then gets hit on his blind side, fumbles the ball.

28:05

But the thing that's weird about this fit with big Daniel and Chargers is, when you're

28:12

saying like, is this a bigger picture thing?

28:15

Was this just a mistake that was made in hiring personnel or whatever?

28:19

I think everybody coming into the season like, this is the best thing that the Chargers

28:23

could do is bring in Mike McDaniel.

28:26

This is the offensive genius.

28:28

He's out there.

28:29

He's available.

28:30

We saw the flaws that he had because his quarterback and Tua wasn't good enough.

28:36

And now if you're listening to, you know, a ringer fantasy show, they're talking about

28:39

like, well, maybe the Chargers should go and they should sign Tua as their backup if

28:42

he's available because obviously that works with a Daniel.

28:45

Maybe that's something that you throw out there.

28:47

Now I don't know how many people besides Craig thinks that that's a good idea, but that

28:51

has been floated out there already.

28:52

So people are having that conversation.

28:55

I think that we all would be surprised coming into week four that we are viewing Mike McDaniel

29:02

in a similar light as we are viewing Davis Web in terms of which head coach is going

29:08

to make a change or make an adjustment with the situation with their offensive coordinator

29:14

first.

29:15

The Broncos are the Chargers.

29:16

Two teams with boat with I don't think either of those teams would be thought of in this

29:20

position right now.

29:21

Well, the other thing is I mean, with Herbert, it's like at some point he does have to be

29:26

accountable here.

29:27

You know, Jim Harboh has never won fewer than what he's won 11 games in five of the six NFL

29:32

seasons.

29:33

He's never had a losing record and he's 0 and 4 right now to your point.

29:37

Mike McDaniel was viewed as a smart, right?

29:40

Offensive mind.

29:41

Look at what he did with Tua and that Miami offense.

29:43

Now he comes to the Chargers and the offense doesn't look good.

29:47

I mean, how many coaches is Herbert going to have to go through or offensive?

29:50

And again, as I've said before, I'm someone who likes Herbert.

29:53

I think it's going to happen for him eventually, but to be fair about it at some point when

29:56

the coach keeps getting fired, when the coordinator keeps getting fired, when you're cycling

30:01

in different offensive linemen and different pass catchers and it still doesn't happen.

30:05

Well, the one constant is the quarterback who we all know was talented and has been very

30:09

good at times and not so good at times and probably underwhelming when you look at

30:13

the career as a whole based on the talent.

30:16

Like, it's fair.

30:17

It's not a hot take to be like, all right, we do have to look at that guy a little bit

30:21

and wonder why these other pieces are never working.

30:24

Broncos still trying to figure things out, find their rhythm.

30:28

We'll talk about them, talk about some other teams that have underachieved some quarterbacks

30:32

who have overachieved.

30:34

A lot more.

30:35

She'll get his, what is it again?

30:37

She'll, you know, I change it every time I say it, but let's say a pun further review.

30:42

We'll see if the audience likes it.

30:43

If not next week, maybe we just switch up one word and do what's it called an A B test

30:48

billy?

30:49

Is that what it's called?

30:50

Am I using that incorrectly?

30:51

I don't know.

30:52

We'll do a pun further review this week to answer your question.

30:55

Upon further review right after this.

30:58

This episode is brought to you by Nationwide.

31:48

A football team is so much more than a set of players.

31:51

It's a complete roster filled with depth and grit.

31:55

Its offense and defense coming together to make something unstoppable.

32:00

It's like how Nationwide is so much more than a great insurance company.

32:04

They're one of America's largest financial services companies too.

32:08

Insurance and financial services together.

32:10

That's a whole team in and of itself.

32:14

Team Nationwide.

32:15

For your insurance and financial needs, Nationwide is on your side.

32:20

32:26

It's Monday night, week four now in the books, which means it's time for

32:30

for a shield and a pawn further review.

32:34

Title is still potentially between.

32:36

Show it again.

32:37

Yeah, I like when we record this part because we can digest the takes from,

32:41

all right, what's everybody getting right?

32:43

What's everybody getting wrong?

32:45

What do we actually think?

32:46

So here are some things I've been chewing on since an electric week four, I think, in the NFL.

32:52

So here's the first one.

32:53

We've talked a lot about the Houston Texans.

32:55

The Houston Texans are now Owen Four.

32:58

CJ Stroud is not the reason why the Houston Texans are Owen Four.

33:02

Because I think we all thought coming into the season, if the Texans have a bad season,

33:06

if they're irrelevant, if things goes out, it's going to be because of CJ Stroud.

33:10

Because we know what we're getting from this defense.

33:12

We know what we're getting from the coaching staff.

33:14

And it just hasn't played out the way.

33:16

I think we thought it was going to play out.

33:18

You know, if you just looked at the record, you'd be like Stroud must be the reason.

33:21

But that game against the Cowboys on Sunday, he was on fire through for 347 yards.

33:28

Didn't have a turnover.

33:29

Had eight completions of 20 plus yards, the most by any quarterback in a game this season.

33:34

He leads them down the field in the fourth quarter puts what's supposed to be an elite defense

33:40

on the field to hold the game.

33:42

And they couldn't do it.

33:43

And they didn't do it for the second game in a row.

33:45

So I just think we have to be fair when we talk about the Texans, when we talk about

33:50

Stroud, I'm not a hipster.

33:51

I'm not a CJ Stroud through throws like, oh, baby, look at him getting to this backside

33:56

dig.

33:57

No ball the way I know ball.

33:59

I'm not even in that camp.

34:00

I just think he's played well enough for them to be better this season and Billy, I'll

34:04

surprise you with this one.

34:07

I don't think they're completely cooked.

34:09

I know the wrong one for I know the history.

34:12

These are like coin flip games that they're getting up, they're guessing heads every time

34:16

and it's tails every single time.

34:18

I still think they're a decent team that has a chance to go on a run the rest of the way

34:24

and like sneak into one of those wild card spots.

34:27

So you don't have CJ Stroud as being the reason.

34:30

Did you have the reason that you had like do you have a primary reason because I was looking

34:33

up.

34:34

So I was trying to prepare for a number of different directions that you could go in

34:37

here and see like, okay, it's not CJ Stroud.

34:39

So let's start looking and it's like, hmm, the run game has been pretty bad.

34:43

They've only got, you know, 79 rushing earth per game on average here.

34:47

And only the Bengals are worse.

34:49

David Montgomery, he's averaging a lot less than he was last year.

34:53

He has 20 carries for 60 yards the first week and after that, I mean, he hasn't done

34:58

a ton more.

34:59

He's 29 so he's getting older, but he's averaging 4.1 yards per carry this season or over

35:03

his career, only 2.7 yards per game this year.

35:07

So he's a lot down or much further down than he was last season.

35:12

So like that's a notable thing.

35:14

Penalties, they're 11th and penalties.

35:15

So they have a lot of penalties against them, 7th and penalty yards against them.

35:20

Among Montgomery, he has 127 yards for the season.

35:22

So in case you're wondering, Kenneth Walker leaves the NFL in rushing yards in season.

35:27

That's 537.

35:29

He has two games that have more yards and Montgomery has the entire season.

35:33

James Cook also has two games with more yards than David Montgomery has the entire season.

35:36

So the run game hasn't been great.

35:39

PFF has their O-line ranked right at the bottom of the league.

35:42

Their O-line hasn't been great.

35:44

Their offense ranks 21st in time of possession, so they're not possessing the ball very

35:47

long.

35:48

So there's a number of factors here.

35:50

I think that you may be right that it's not all on CJ Strout.

35:54

This is a fascinating stat.

35:57

If you look at the current qualifying pass, there's like 35 guys who have thrown enough

36:01

passes at the season to qualify.

36:03

There are three quarterbacks who have not thrown an interception.

36:09

And I would fairly guess you would not be able to name those three.

36:12

You want to take one stab, Shield?

36:14

You want to take one guess as somebody who's on the list?

36:16

Has not thrown an interception this season.

36:21

I know Purdy hasn't taken a sack.

36:23

Has he thrown an interception?

36:25

I guess Purdy has.

36:26

I'm not Purdy.

36:27

Not Purdy.

36:28

You got a guess, Billy.

36:29

Well, I know one of them for sure, because we're talking about him right now.

36:32

Right.

36:33

Okay.

36:34

Try to guess one of the other two.

36:35

Okay.

36:36

The other two.

36:37

Context, Closer, everything.

36:38

Hmm.

36:39

It's not James.

36:41

For sure, not James.

36:42

Oh, that's what your mind went.

36:46

When Tom phrases the question, who has not thrown an interception, your mind was like

36:50

James.

36:51

Well, it's because he's just throwing three.

36:54

Yeah.

36:55

He had a rough week.

36:57

Case qualified.

36:58

Case, key number, an interception.

36:59

I don't remember.

37:00

He doesn't qualify.

37:01

He has not.

37:02

He almost threw a few, but not enough qualifying, not a pass to qualify.

37:04

There's three quarterbacks who have not thrown a pick this year.

37:07

Are Jared Goff, Geno Smith and CJ Stroud.

37:13

It was Stroud, even in like the most unfavorable telling, you know, yeah, he's completely 61%

37:19

of his passes.

37:20

It was a higher rate yesterday.

37:22

Strong for over 1100 yards.

37:23

Five touchdown passes, no picks.

37:26

Well, when I look at the 2026 Texans, there's two factors, I think the pop up.

37:31

One, Nico Collins being out for a couple of weeks.

37:33

Like there's a direct correlation between Nico Collins being on the field and them being

37:38

super explosive and Nico Collins not being on the field and they're not.

37:42

Remember, this is a Texans team, too, that hasn't had Christian Kirk.

37:45

He got hurt on like the first day camp hasn't played.

37:48

They still don't have tanked L back.

37:50

They've had to kind of have this different rotation.

37:52

When you take Nico out, CJ Stroud's throwing two, you know, just kind of a smattering of

37:58

other guys out there.

38:00

The second factor is this Texans defense, which was the calling card for them last year.

38:05

They were the number one defense.

38:06

And Lee, they've had three opportunities, two minute drives, put games away.

38:12

And they're over three.

38:14

We know this.

38:15

Tameco Ryan's nose football.

38:17

Matt Burke is a really good defensive coordinator.

38:20

Whatever it is, whatever buttons they're pushing, they have to push other ones.

38:24

In those two minute situations like this is why you invest in the will Anderson, Jr. at

38:28

the top of the market and the Neal Hunters making like $40 million.

38:32

And Derek Stingley is one of the highest paid corners.

38:34

Like you're expecting that group to step up.

38:36

They didn't have LZ's outshire on Sunday.

38:39

I'm sure that that makes a factor.

38:40

But it's a little bit of a pattern, small sample size.

38:43

But that's the stuff that if you're the Texans coaches, Sheila, you got to be banging

38:47

your heads against the wall.

38:48

Like we're good enough.

38:49

We know that we've done this before, but three cracks at it and we haven't closed out

38:54

any of these games.

38:55

I would imagine that the Tameco and Burke and those guys, it's been a lot of time this

38:59

week.

39:00

Okay, we know we're good enough.

39:01

We're playing the Titans this week.

39:02

Okay, like this is a, you should win this game.

39:05

No offense to the Titans, but like you absolutely should win this game.

39:09

Let's make sure if the Titans keep it close, which they kind of have to solve is done

39:12

a good job with their defense.

39:14

Let's make sure our defense where we've got all the investment.

39:18

And that's what we're known for isn't the reason that we let this thing slip away again.

39:22

It's weird because Will Anderson, I think has maybe been the best defensive player in football

39:26

this year.

39:27

Like he is making an impact.

39:28

He is doing everything in his power to get that defense going.

39:32

And there are stretches where you watch them.

39:34

And you're like, okay, this is the defense.

39:35

We thought they were going to be, but to your point, they're not closing these

39:39

games.

39:40

And overall, if you just look at EPA or whatever, they're 25th in EPA.

39:44

Now part of this is they've gone up against Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Dak Prescott in

39:49

three or four games where I know they should be able to perform better against those guys.

39:54

But that is a tough group.

39:56

You know, if you're just naming the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL this season, all three

40:00

of those guys are going to be in there.

40:02

And then part of it, I hate to use this as an Alicist because it's like, she'll were

40:05

paying you.

40:06

And it should be a little bit better than they're getting a little unlucky.

40:09

But I think they're getting a little unlucky.

40:11

I mean, we've won Josh Allen is chucking that ball to Kamari Lasseter in the end zone.

40:17

He drops the ball.

40:18

Like if that play happens 10 times, I don't know.

40:21

Is he catching it at least six or seven times probably?

40:24

And he doesn't catch it there.

40:25

That could be a win there.

40:26

And even this last game, I mean, they had some calls go up a Lasseter has not had a great

40:31

season.

40:32

He's been one of the better corners in the NFL, but he had some calls not go his way

40:36

on that final drive where the Cowboys had it.

40:38

So these are all reasons why I'm like, you know what?

40:41

I don't think they're that far away.

40:43

I totally agree with Tom's point about Nico Collins.

40:46

He is just, he just totally changes what their offense should actually look like.

40:51

So it's not the hardest schedule going for it.

40:53

I was looking at it.

40:54

I think they need to go 10 and three, which seems like a big ass for an O and four team.

41:01

They won nine games in a row last year at one point.

41:03

So it's like the bones are still there for this team.

41:06

I'm not crossing them off as a team that could still potentially get hot.

41:11

Going through this schedule, she and I'm trying to find these 10 wins.

41:15

But more importantly, I'm trying to find these three losses at night.

41:18

It's possible.

41:19

It sounds crazy, but it's possible that they could do this.

41:23

You have to win this week.

41:25

You simply have to win this week against Tennessee.

41:29

Because then you're at Jacksonville and home against the Giants team that we can talk about

41:33

later, but they're not an easy out right now.

41:36

That's before the buy.

41:38

You would hope, yeah, coming out of the buy, the chargers have been terrible.

41:42

The Browns will see how they're sustained in November.

41:44

Like you've got some games you'd like to think you can win.

41:47

Yeah, you got to get the one.

41:49

And then you go, okay, you know, if we can, if we can make tapies next two, go into the

41:52

buy three and four.

41:53

It's going to feel a hell of a lot different than, you know, two and five or one and six.

41:58

Yeah, absolutely.

41:59

All right.

42:00

My next one here.

42:01

Here we go.

42:02

I've been chewing on a quarterback we've talked about before on this podcast had a moment on

42:07

Sunday night.

42:09

Bryce Young might be delivering and I can't wait to your time.

42:13

Give us some information on maybe what the contract negotiations have looked like or

42:18

could look like, but Bryce Young might be delivering one of the best bet on yourself

42:21

seasons in recent memory.

42:24

I mean, if you watch that game Sunday night against the Lions, he throws for 329 yards.

42:29

They go up and down the field.

42:30

I swear the box score said he had like 12 in completions.

42:33

I watched the whole game.

42:34

I don't remember the ball hitting the ground at any point in that game.

42:37

It felt like a miracle when the panthers threw in in completion.

42:40

And the thing with this game is he's had little games in the past where he's saying, there's

42:45

something there.

42:46

I don't think he's had a stretch like this to open the season for games in a row where

42:51

he ranked seven in EPA even last year when it felt like he was making progress.

42:55

He ranked 24th.

42:56

So this is totally different than anything he's done in the past.

43:00

I think the the I test backs it up.

43:02

He looks really comfortable.

43:04

Is that that internal clock that like the quarterback announcers always talk about?

43:08

It seems like he's got that when pressure is coming.

43:10

He knows when to step up.

43:12

He knows when to get creative.

43:13

He knows when to get rid of the ball.

43:15

And I just feel like this is shaping up to potentially be one of the big feel good stories

43:21

in the NFL.

43:22

Did you guys see the video when he went into the locker room?

43:25

The MVP chance.

43:26

I didn't see it.

43:27

No.

43:28

Yeah.

43:29

Billy wasn't really.

43:30

No, it's not that.

43:31

I mean, I just I kind of feel like so many of these locker room videos and I have a lot

43:34

of thoughts, but go ahead.

43:36

What was it like a team published one where it was like, oh, the panthers put this out.

43:40

So there's like the nice music underneath.

43:41

So it like really gets you in the fields.

43:43

It seems genuine.

43:44

Like that one seemed genuine.

43:46

I watch one with Matt LaFlor giving a speech in the locker room and it felt like he was

43:50

trying, but they were all like, oh my God, we almost blew that game to the buck starting

43:54

and I'm drafted for it.

43:56

This one felt a lot better than that Packers one.

43:58

I'll say that.

43:59

I don't know if you caught this.

44:00

There's been a lot of criticism of Bryce over the years, but during last night's game,

44:04

Chris Collins were said something that I was like, I don't know that he's entirely wrong,

44:10

but I also don't know that it's fair criticism where he said, you know, Bryce young often

44:14

gets criticized for kind of being told that he's not in the zone during the game.

44:18

And a lot of that comes down to his face.

44:20

If you look at his face, it looks like he's not always in the zone.

44:23

And I'm like, I don't know, Chris, like I'm not sure that this is a fair one.

44:26

You just look kind of like a happy guy that's not to say that he's not in the zone.

44:30

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I will pose it to both of you because you're saying

44:33

is this like one of the best bet on yourself seasons ever.

44:38

It seems like, unless I'm totally off here, they would just pick up his fifth year option,

44:43

right?

44:44

So he's making a little over $12 million.

44:45

They already did that, I think.

44:47

Right, Tom, he signed for 2027.

44:49

That's the option.

44:50

Correct.

44:51

So then he'll make $25.

44:52

He had to do it at this past spring.

44:53

Yep.

44:54

Yeah.

44:55

So, I mean, he still has to perform next season too, right?

44:59

Like this is a good season for him, but he's got to continue to carry it on.

45:04

And they didn't believe in him enough to give him that big contract extension yet.

45:08

Well, the options, you know, that's a rock on your cap because you can't like, parade

45:14

it and stuff.

45:15

And so nobody wants to carry that fifth year option number for the quarterback.

45:19

And then you're again down the road of the tags.

45:20

Like, listen, you could do it, you know, a variety of different ways.

45:24

But usually if you got a quarterback playing at a high level, you get the contract done.

45:28

Now in terms of what discussions took place in the off season, my understanding was it

45:32

was very, I don't want to say cursory, but they didn't get into any deep negotiation

45:37

to it was just, hey, this is where we would do a deal.

45:40

Well, that's not where the market's going to be this year or next year.

45:42

All right, we're not going to get a deal done.

45:44

And it kind of made sense because you'd say the arrows pointing up, right?

45:48

On Bryce through the course last year and you get into the playoffs, they'll be at

45:51

8.9.

45:52

But he had his moment.

45:54

It made sense.

45:55

The Panthers want to gather more information and it made sense for Bryce that, all right,

45:59

if I'm not going to be getting paid like a top five top 10 quarterback, I'll just wait

46:04

and I'll play it out because I got fully guaranteed money through 2027.

46:09

The Bryce we've seen though, this is something better than I think that we've seen him in

46:15

terms of just the way that he is playing.

46:18

And in terms of his demeanor on the field, like I've met Bryce a couple of times, that's

46:22

just kind of how he is.

46:24

Like that's his natural.

46:25

You don't want to pretend you're somebody else and like act like you're a fiery guy

46:28

on the field when in reality, you're just like, you know, you're having fun.

46:32

Do you remember after, you know, the year he got benched and then the only reason he got

46:36

back in the lineup was because Andy Dalton was in a car accident.

46:40

And so Bryce went out there and he kind of caught fire.

46:43

And there was a play in the game against the thing that was New Orleans down the stretch

46:46

in 2024 where he has the pass and he does the full like turn your back when you shot

46:52

the three pointer and just like goes in and he throws the touchdown.

46:56

And it was like, that's him.

46:58

Like the joy was back.

46:59

And I give Dave Canalis and that staff, you know, Brad is it was calling the plays now

47:04

will hair.

47:05

The quarter bass coach, like everybody deserves a lot of credit for building someone

47:09

up who would hit such a low in his career.

47:12

And think about this and watching the game last night.

47:14

He's doing that without jail and cocker, who is his most reliable target out of the gate

47:19

without Xavier Lee get who's on injured reserve right now.

47:23

Team Act goes wild.

47:24

Team Act is a bad man.

47:26

But that basketball team that you've been building around and was like depleted not to

47:30

mention, you know, when you're starting guards is out, you know, when you're starting tackles

47:34

goes down in the game like there's a lot of things when you're running backs.

47:37

The guy Jonathan Brooks who everybody was thinking was going to be the lead back.

47:41

He's on IAR like they've got all these different moving parts.

47:44

And Bryce has found a way to elevate himself above it.

47:47

Now that's a lion's team that's just gutted by injuries, especially in the secondary.

47:51

So you should light them up.

47:52

But big stage panties are almost never on TV, never in prime time, never ever in a game

47:57

like this.

47:58

And it felt like one of those moments, not to mention how you're going into your buy.

48:02

You're sitting there going, we're lightening it up.

48:04

We got the leading passer in the NFL and we're two and two in a division that's just

48:09

not that great.

48:11

If you're a panthers fan waking up today, you should be excited about the team.

48:14

They're also really excited about Bryce Young who contrary to, you know, whatever one of

48:18

the world thought a year and a half into his career.

48:20

Maybe a lot closer to CJ Stroud in terms of the one two in that draft.

48:24

Yeah, I like, I love the canalist point because a lot of times the young quarterback, it

48:28

doesn't work for them with the team that drafted them.

48:31

And then they have to go somewhere else to have that whole process of all right, let

48:34

somebody build me back up and I'm in a better situation like Sam Darnell.

48:38

Now it works where he's in the same place and I don't think anyone a couple of years

48:43

ago would have predicted that it's going to happen for him in Carolina.

48:46

Now Billy, I think you're right when you are looting to like pump the brakes a little

48:51

like they don't have to do anything.

48:53

You're right about that.

48:54

Like they could do something.

48:56

I don't think it would be the worst idea for them to slow play this.

48:59

Obviously, there's so many variables here.

49:00

Let's see how the rest of this season goes.

49:02

Can he stay healthy?

49:03

Can he sustain this level of play?

49:05

Where do they do in the playoffs?

49:06

Like there's a bar that he clears where if he clears it, it's going to be an easy decision.

49:10

And they're going to be like, no, Brainer, look at the season you just had.

49:13

There's a big middle ground there where, you know, what if they go nine and eight and

49:17

he's good at times, but he's not great at times.

49:20

And he has some injuries where they could say, okay, let's just have him play out next

49:24

year on the fifth year option, even though there are those cap ramifications.

49:28

You still have the franchise tag in your pocket for 2028 because I think some of these

49:33

teams given what we've seen with some of the quarterback contracts that have been handed

49:36

out, they might be like, I know it's going to get more expensive, but I still would like

49:41

to be sure if we're going to hand out this kind of money to a guy, given what those prices

49:46

are going to be right now.

49:47

It's a dangerous game, though, right?

49:48

Because like that's what happened with two of where two of you waited too long, then

49:51

you signed up to that massive deal.

49:53

And now he's basically crippled the dolphins franchise for the next three seasons, two

49:58

seasons where it's like, well, he's got to go.

50:00

He's obviously not the answer here.

50:01

We have to pay him forever.

50:03

Also, and we kind of were talking about it before this season started, Baker didn't want

50:07

to sign unless he was getting 50 plus million a year and he got three years, right?

50:11

He signs that deal.

50:12

He immediately gets hurt and now you're kind of like, well, Baker might be out for a decent

50:16

amount of time.

50:17

He'll come back and he'll be the franchise quarterback again, but it starts getting pricey with

50:21

quarterbacks, especially if you're not convinced that he's your guy.

50:24

If the money that he's going to get in the fifth year option next year is 25, but he wants

50:28

to be top 10, you're looking at $50 million a year starting for him, right?

50:33

And you're not 100% sure.

50:34

And fair or not, we've kind of questioned Bryce because of his size since pre-draft even,

50:39

we always saw him and it's like, oh, he looks small.

50:42

And then when I think people were really like, oh, he's really small was when, you know,

50:46

friend of the show, Mina Kimes took a picture with him at the Super Bowl like three years

50:49

ago before he was drafted.

50:51

And it's like, they're the same height.

50:53

Like is he like five eight?

50:54

Like is Mina six four?

50:56

Like how tall is this guy?

50:57

Is he actually that small?

50:59

And then he didn't have a great rookie season.

51:01

He was benched, you know, the car accident Tom talked about.

51:03

So he's gone through a lot into his credit.

51:05

He never kind of gave up on himself and he was ready to play that role last year.

51:09

They brought him back in.

51:10

He proved himself and this year he's been great so far for them.

51:13

I mean, it's only four weeks into the season, but still he's done as good as he can.

51:18

Yeah.

51:19

There's the advantage of signing guys early is you get it at today's dollars, not tomorrow's

51:25

dollars, right?

51:26

You can save on the market.

51:27

There are a lot of cautionary tales too is a big one because there were so many blinking

51:31

red lights of just let the guy play it out.

51:35

Just go into let him, you know, he wants to not marry.

51:38

He wasn't participating in training camp.

51:39

They felt like we got to do it.

51:41

We're going to commit to him, but he'd already had the concussion issues, the other injury

51:44

issues.

51:45

And obviously from that point forward, he never played all that great, but you know,

51:49

Kyler was another one.

51:50

They did that after year three.

51:52

They tried.

51:53

All right, even though we have all these concerns with him, we're going to do the deal now.

51:56

It's better than doing it later.

51:57

You know, two is making like 53 million from the dolphins this year.

52:00

Kyler is making like 37 million from the Cardinals.

52:03

I get why it seemed like the Panthers can look at this and can say, all right, the arrow

52:07

is pointing up, but we also remember where it was before.

52:11

In other words, how good is he actually going to be?

52:13

Yes, it's a lot better than it was, but is it going to be top 10 type play for a top,

52:19

you know, top 10 money with Bryce right now?

52:21

You have to say, well, you know, the guy we saw last night, the guy who's seen through

52:24

four weeks is a borderline top 10 quarterback.

52:28

He certainly has the production, but you know, if you get to the end of this year and you're

52:32

able to gather more information, you may feel a little bit better.

52:34

All right, now we will pay the extra five, 10 million a year or whatever it might be just

52:38

because now we feel more comfortable about the entire body of work here.

52:42

I wonder how willing he is to go down the path though, right?

52:45

Because like you've had quarterbacks that have gone down that path.

52:48

You've had DAC who was seemingly always in these negotiations.

52:51

We're like 2019.

52:52

It's like, oh, we want to give you $30 million.

52:54

He's like, nope, I want 40.

52:55

He's like, okay, I have about 33.

52:56

He's like, nope, I want 40.

52:57

Then eventually he goes and he gets longer daily like five year 175 than he does that

53:02

again, right?

53:03

Where it's like, I want to make, you know, $50 million, you're $60 million.

53:06

You're he ends up holding out playing under the tag.

53:08

He gets that contract.

53:09

You have Lamar Jackson who asked for a trade and that was playing under the tag bet on

53:13

himself.

53:14

Then it's up, ends up getting a massive deal for himself.

53:16

So I wonder if Bryce not having already signed one of those massive deals and kind of essentially

53:22

losing his job and then getting it back because of a freak accident now he's performing.

53:27

I wonder if he does actually because, you know, to Chris Collins with point, his face doesn't

53:32

look like someone who's going to be like a hard ass here and he's going to like really

53:35

press them.

53:36

So is he willing to kind of not hold out but really make things uncomfortable until he gets

53:42

the number that he wants?

53:44

Bryce has already made close to $40 million in his career.

53:48

He's due 25.9 on the 50 year option in 2027.

53:53

So you don't have like the financial complications that you would if let's say, you know, you're

53:59

Kirk Cousins and you are a fourth round pick.

54:01

But as we saw with Kirk, if you can find yourself in that position and if you have the guts

54:06

to say, I'm going to play it all the way out.

54:08

I'm going to even play through the tag.

54:10

That's the only time that your leverage comes.

54:12

Kirk Cousins this year is on his 11th consecutive fully guaranteed year going all the way back

54:18

to 2026 or 2016 rather when he played on the franchise tag.

54:23

So if you do it just like Lamar did it too.

54:25

He played the whole thing out and no agent would have advised him as a former MVP.

54:29

Yeah, year four go play for $3 million.

54:32

They would have told him hold out but there are different ways that you can approach it.

54:36

Again, Bryce has made more money than most quarterbacks in the, you know, post 2011

54:41

maybe a era through the first four years for square.

54:43

If anybody can go, hey, what's my worst case scenario?

54:45

I made $40 million and I'll just wait it out until I get traded or something else.

54:50

Like, I don't think there's any reason that you wouldn't do that.

54:53

But it also, you know, there's a two-part thing here.

54:56

It's also what does the team want to do?

54:58

It'll be a fascinating negotiation.

54:59

Who knows?

55:00

Maybe even it comes up this week.

55:02

They're on the buy.

55:03

He's playing really well.

55:04

Do they re-engage?

55:05

I don't know that that happens.

55:07

But if you were ever going to do it, we've seen that happen with other teams in the past.

55:11

Tom think or his Tom.

55:12

No, she will stay.

55:13

That's not a thing.

55:14

That's not a game.

55:15

No, we didn't think that.

55:16

That's a subscribe thing.

55:17

We didn't think we had enough.

55:18

We didn't think we had enough.

55:19

That's what I didn't think you had enough to do.

55:20

We didn't think you had enough to do the game newsletter.

55:21

Three seasons plus four games.

55:23

Exclusive details on Bryce's new contract and the sweep.

55:27

We'll find out.

55:28

You're ever going to re-engage.

55:29

Yeah, I think that, you know, just the last thing I'll say on this is just those guys

55:35

had a much greater body of work for as much as I'm enjoying the month that Bryce

55:40

Young has had.

55:41

That's kind of what it's been a month and then little pockets previously.

55:45

Kirk Cuzin, Stack Press, Scott Lamar Jackson.

55:47

I mean, these guys had been above average quarterbacks for multiple seasons.

55:50

So he's got to figure that out.

55:52

But Billy, the quarterback body language thing is what quarterback has the body language

55:59

on the sideline that is like universally accepted because it feels like whatever your game

56:03

you're watching, you could say this about the guy.

56:06

You know, like, oh, look at his face on this side.

56:08

I know he's sitting by himself for, you know, he's not even looking at the tablet.

56:12

Does this guy even take football seriously?

56:14

There's like these three second clips.

56:16

You see a quarterbacks and they get ripped for this stuff.

56:19

Is there anybody who were like, oh, that's, you know, everybody would like to body language.

56:23

Joe Flacco just looks like he's about to fall asleep at all times.

56:29

Dad knows when he's not on the field.

56:31

Everybody's different.

56:32

Whoever's winning, that's the right.

56:34

That's right.

56:35

There is not.

56:36

Yeah.

56:37

All right.

56:38

My last one here, this is kind of a multi-parter.

56:41

I'm glad Tom, you know, mentioned the Lions earlier, but we didn't go deep into it.

56:45

So we're all on the same page because there might be an opportunity to do that here.

56:48

So here's the premise.

56:50

Until further notice, I cannot take these teams that were considered contenders before the

56:56

season.

56:57

I can't take them seriously.

56:58

Wow.

56:59

And I'm not including teams like the chargers and Texans, they're Owen for, we understand.

57:03

We don't have to take them seriously.

57:05

These are three two and two teams that I'm bumping up the panic level on until they

57:11

give me a reason to say, she'll calm down, settled.

57:14

Okay, it's only October.

57:15

So there's three of them.

57:16

I'm going to give them to you one by one.

57:18

We can discuss them one by one.

57:19

The first one as we just hinted at the Detroit Lions.

57:23

My preseason, Super Bowl pick.

57:27

I'm concerned.

57:28

And the analysis here is simple.

57:31

Their defense is a complete dumpster fire and there doesn't appear to be a way out.

57:35

I mean, I don't know what other way to say it.

57:36

I could bore you with all the statistics.

57:38

They all start with they are 30 second in and then I could give you like 12 different

57:42

categories for the Detroit Lions.

57:44

This is the worst defense in the NFL.

57:46

And I don't think Brian Branch potentially returning from the Achilles will be enough

57:51

to save them.

57:52

It could help them, but I don't think it's going to be enough to save them.

57:55

So I think their options are, get aggressive at the trade market.

57:59

Sounds like they at least were making calls about Joey Porter.

58:02

Junior Tom can tell us about that.

58:04

Come up with some type of brilliant schematic shift, which I don't know.

58:08

Can you do that in the middle of the season?

58:10

That sounds kind of tough.

58:12

Or you risk being some version of last year's Bengals or last year's Cowboys.

58:18

That's where I'm at with this team because I think they're still going to win games, easy

58:21

schedule, good offense.

58:23

But like I said earlier, when a team doesn't complete a pass against them, it feels like

58:28

a miracle.

58:29

Not good at anything defensively and I'm worried.

58:33

I was looking up their defense because it has been horrendous.

58:37

To put it politely.

58:39

It's been very bad.

58:40

So they've allowed 423 yards per game.

58:44

The next close is the Colt at 392.

58:46

Usually when you're looking at like yards per game, points for game, it's like one or

58:51

two, point eight difference from like one to the other.

58:54

This is 30 yards difference that they're allowing per game.

58:59

Points per game, they've allowed for passing yards per game, 304, the Jaguars 280.

59:04

Another one that is like a massive golf.

59:06

It's really bad.

59:07

And last year, they're only allowing 217.

59:09

So you're looking at what, 90 extra passing yards you're allowing per game.

59:14

You've mentioned their secondary has been decimated.

59:16

So there's a lot of injuries there.

59:18

But you know, rushing the best is the best of their defense.

59:21

They're 21st in the league in rushing yards allowed per game.

59:24

That's still not very good.

59:25

Last year, they only allowed 24 points per game this year.

59:28

It's 31.

59:29

So it's a full touchdown difference.

59:30

I mean, it's early, you know, and they lost the loss to the bills who they were, they

59:36

were not favored to lose.

59:37

They have, they're favored in 14 coming to the season 14 of the 17 games.

59:41

One of the games was a build game.

59:42

So that was like, could be a schedule of loss, right?

59:44

The game against the Panthers was a surprise, but again, they're injured.

59:47

So I don't think it's full blow in panic time.

59:49

But I do wonder and I mean, maybe it's crazy.

59:53

But if the Jets say Aaron Glenn, you know, your time has come.

59:59

It's time to go.

1:00:01

This isn't working out.

1:00:02

And he becomes available to the Lions in season in season.

1:00:08

The old New Jacks.

1:00:10

Kelvin Shepherd.

1:00:11

This was fun, but we're going to bring in an old friend to maybe help out here, you

1:00:16

know?

1:00:17

Like if you can bring back the guy who was your guy when you were at your peak in terms

1:00:21

of where the Lions were, do you try to get him back?

1:00:24

Is that something Aaron would even be interested in in season he wouldn't be, right?

1:00:28

But next season, if this trend continues, you have to make some sort of change here.

1:00:32

So I mean, sure, after the season, if he's available, it's possible.

1:00:37

I don't, I don't think Aaron Glenn, sitting here right now is going to be available in

1:00:40

the season.

1:00:41

We have seen it.

1:00:42

We have been several of those times.

1:00:44

Bella check used to bring back his assistance during the season when they got fired.

1:00:48

I mentioned he we got fired by the Browns.

1:00:50

I saw him like a week later wearing Bengals gear on the field before a game.

1:00:54

Like it's not totally off the wall to talk about that stuff.

1:00:59

Like they've got a lot of different issues and Detroit on defense right now.

1:01:03

It starts with the secondary is just gutted.

1:01:06

Everybody, you know, rip Terry on Arnold long before the legal issues, but going back to

1:01:11

just like, you know, his, his completions allowed and passed through and all that.

1:01:14

But like from day one, they were confident going, you're taking the number one receiver.

1:01:19

Like you're going to be on an island and you're just playing with them and you're going

1:01:21

to deal with it.

1:01:22

And he competed week in a week out last year.

1:01:25

He was heard, obviously, DJ Reed's been banged up all season.

1:01:29

Branch hasn't played.

1:01:30

He might be the most important guy in that defense.

1:01:32

And Kirby Joseph hasn't played.

1:01:34

I don't think he's going to be back anytime soon.

1:01:36

He is trying to get back this season.

1:01:39

Everybody's got a pretty significant knee injury that the rehab process is, is really

1:01:44

elongated.

1:01:45

And that's why he's, he's not out on the field yet.

1:01:47

But even more so, they just, they don't seem to have an identity when you talk to other

1:01:51

people who have faced them.

1:01:52

It's just kind of like what are they trying to be on defense?

1:01:56

You know, if you want to have optimism, if you hear offense from the Lions, the scored

1:02:00

31, 31, 31, 26 points.

1:02:03

You can say if we're scoring like that for most teams like you're in these games, the

1:02:07

problem is you've given up 30, 41, 24 and 32.

1:02:11

Week five, last game before the buy.

1:02:14

They are at Arizona, drew Petsing Revenge Game going the offensive coordinator going

1:02:19

back against his old team in Arizona.

1:02:22

Like this is, I hate to say must wins in week five, but this feels like one.

1:02:26

The Cardinals are competitive every single week.

1:02:29

They've scumpled over these last few weeks to try to finish off these games, but they're

1:02:32

going to be in their building.

1:02:34

Two and three going into your buy is going to feel like what do we do now?

1:02:38

Three and two, you get a win.

1:02:40

You still got your entire NFC North Slay to head of you.

1:02:44

They come out of the buy against the Packers and the Vikings both at home.

1:02:47

You're three and two going into those games and the division feels wide open.

1:02:51

I wouldn't feel that bad about it right now.

1:02:54

The defense isn't good enough and Brad Holmes doesn't have a long history of trading

1:02:58

high draft picks for players.

1:03:00

I don't know what individual player frankly is going to fix what's going on on defense.

1:03:05

They have to find an identity.

1:03:06

They have to get branch back.

1:03:08

They probably do have to make a move of some kind before the deadline.

1:03:11

It's just a lot of pieces.

1:03:13

Otherwise, it's going to be our Jared Congrats.

1:03:15

He's going 30 game.

1:03:16

We're going to need 40 instead.

1:03:17

I know that's the problem is that their offense is good.

1:03:20

It's a top five offense by any metric you can look at.

1:03:24

It's like, do you want to waste that in a year where you have a easy schedule and it feels

1:03:28

like there's no juggernaut in the NFC.

1:03:30

There are good teams.

1:03:32

Dan Campbell had that quote.

1:03:33

We all know back in the day where he's like, that could be our only chance.

1:03:36

I just wonder if there's some point where they feel that sense of urgency and they're

1:03:40

like, it might be out of character for us to make a move like this, but now's the time.

1:03:46

We got to do something here.

1:03:48

Maybe the best case scenario is branch comes back.

1:03:50

Healthy Kirby Joseph does come back and then you add one more player.

1:03:54

I mean, that could get me to a place where it's like, okay, it might not be perfect, but

1:03:57

it's going to look a lot better than it looks right now.

1:03:59

They're just not giving them a chance when the Lions offense punts in a game or turns it

1:04:03

over.

1:04:04

It feels like the game just shifts and it's like, uh-oh, that might be enough for them to

1:04:09

lose.

1:04:10

They're just like no margin for error for the offense.

1:04:12

So yeah, Lions defense has me very, very concerned in a big way.

1:04:16

Let's see what it looks like in the weeks ahead.

1:04:19

Okay, I got two more teams.

1:04:20

Oh, go ahead, Bill.

1:04:21

It could also be worse for them, right?

1:04:22

Like they could very well be Owen Ford at this point because their wins have been one

1:04:26

score wins.

1:04:27

There was the first overtime game that they won by one because the Saints decided to go

1:04:30

by two.

1:04:31

Like, this could be uglier than it actually is for them.

1:04:34

So they've kind of treaded water enough at this point.

1:04:40

And they have big leans in those games and then they're just getting lit up in the second

1:04:43

half in some of them.

1:04:45

Okay, my second team here, I got three of these.

1:04:46

Second one is the Philadelphia Eagles.

1:04:50

Their offseason is shaping up to be a disaster.

1:04:54

They had 172 yards of offense on Sunday against the Rams.

1:05:00

That was their lowest total in a game in the last 12 years.

1:05:05

They had 68 net passing yards in that game.

1:05:09

That was their lowest total in the last 23 years.

1:05:14

Oh, for 12 on third down.

1:05:15

I mean, I could go on.

1:05:16

I don't know if you guys are getting bored or not, but they go three and out on 45% of their

1:05:21

possessions.

1:05:22

It just looks hopeless.

1:05:24

There's injuries.

1:05:25

There's coaching.

1:05:26

There's jail and hurts looking uncomfortable.

1:05:28

It's all of the above.

1:05:29

Like, there's always these conversations and Philadelphia.

1:05:31

Is it this?

1:05:32

Is it this?

1:05:33

Is it this?

1:05:34

I'm like, you had a 68 net passing yards.

1:05:36

It's probably all of those things.

1:05:37

This is terrible.

1:05:39

So defense is not good enough to carry them.

1:05:42

And unless I see some progress, I put them in the same bucket as the Lions where it's

1:05:46

like, I cannot take you seriously as a contender in the NFC.

1:05:51

Is this just too close to home for you?

1:05:53

Like the over 12 on third down, obviously, is terrible.

1:05:56

The being shut out in the second half, two weeks in a row is terrible.

1:06:00

But is this just maybe shield and Philly had higher expectations?

1:06:04

So now that we're not where we thought we'd be, like the panic alarm is going off a little

1:06:07

bit.

1:06:08

I don't think so because I said for all off season, I think the offense is going to take

1:06:13

some time and the defense is going to be able to carry them to some wins.

1:06:16

It's a new scheme.

1:06:18

But this is not like, oh, it's up and down.

1:06:22

It's kind of bad.

1:06:23

Tom, this is like, I can't watch this anymore.

1:06:26

I can't imagine anybody who has no interest in the two specific teams playing in that game

1:06:31

or is betting on it or has fantasy implications.

1:06:35

I can't imagine my anyone would want to have their TV on the Eagles offense at any point

1:06:39

so far this season.

1:06:40

Well, some of it to the defense for a second.

1:06:42

They're 20 second right now in yards allowed for gain.

1:06:45

The defense has struggled throughout and you saw when the Rams had some got to have

1:06:49

at moments in the second half.

1:06:51

They were able to get those things done.

1:06:53

You know, you make a trade in the off season for Jonathan Grinard.

1:06:56

That has been a zero impact type of a trade so far.

1:07:00

I'm sure how he's thinking about other things he can do to fortify that side of the ball.

1:07:04

Offensively, I do think we need to give a little bit more grace.

1:07:08

It is a difficult system.

1:07:11

The Sean Manian is putting in.

1:07:13

It's also the first time play collar and think about this in the game yesterday.

1:07:16

If SafeOne doesn't slip and hurt his hamstring early, are we convinced they're not winning

1:07:21

that game going away?

1:07:22

They also tank bigs being the game.

1:07:24

So down to Shipley's the only healthy running back left on the roster.

1:07:29

They find out Lane Johnson is not going to play like two hours before kickoff, which

1:07:32

you can only imagine the impact that has.

1:07:34

I know, yeah, Devon, Dave Smith wasn't available either.

1:07:37

I think that there's more circumstances.

1:07:39

I know it's Philly.

1:07:40

I know that every single loss is a fold the franchise moment.

1:07:44

But I do think that if you look at all the various things, I think Jay, Jaylin Hertz has

1:07:47

played fine overall from what I have seen, knowing the challenges, knowing that this scheme

1:07:52

is such a departure from what he's done and maybe not on paper the best fit for him.

1:07:57

Like he's working every week on this thing.

1:07:59

They haven't got Mackay Lemon going yet.

1:08:01

I understand the things that are happening in terms of like their identity and what is

1:08:05

it.

1:08:06

But all the injuries right now and knowing that Nick has pulled out of, I don't know,

1:08:09

how many tailspins during his time as the head coach, I'm not that concerned about

1:08:14

the Eagles just yet.

1:08:15

And if I am concerned about the Eagles, it's more on the defense right now than it is on

1:08:18

the offense.

1:08:19

I'm going to have to send that to all my friends and neighbors and family, Billy, because

1:08:24

I'm done to the nice job.

1:08:25

They're coming everyone down and fill it up.

1:08:27

Yeah, it's only October.

1:08:29

They're two and two.

1:08:30

Yeah, I think Hertz has had two good games, two bad games probably, but maybe that's what

1:08:33

you would expect learning on your scheme with some of those circumstances.

1:08:36

I'm just, yeah, maybe you're right, Billy.

1:08:38

I'm too close to it.

1:08:39

I have to watch every night.

1:08:40

They're looking for the Eagles really special.

1:08:42

I know it's, I'm just telling you, it's hard to watch this offense right now.

1:08:46

Okay.

1:08:47

Third team here.

1:08:48

The Denver Broncos are third on my list here.

1:08:52

They've gotten outgained by more than 200 yards twice already this season.

1:08:59

The rest of the NFL, that's only happened five other times for the 31 other teams.

1:09:05

They pull out that game against the Rams last week.

1:09:08

Give them credit.

1:09:09

This was a gutty effort with the defense.

1:09:11

You had injuries there.

1:09:13

I guess the 49ers and that was a close game in the second half, but this Davis Web shot

1:09:19

in Peyton conversation doesn't appear to be going anywhere.

1:09:21

I mean, I don't know how many time shot Peyton has been asked about it.

1:09:25

And we're only in week four.

1:09:26

And like his response this week was like, I understand the question.

1:09:29

I appreciate the question.

1:09:30

Yeah, it's not a bad question.

1:09:32

Yeah, we're not making a change right now or whatever you said, but they're run game.

1:09:37

They didn't have a run of more than nine yards against sort of a depleted 49ers defense.

1:09:42

Jalen Waddle is not being featured bow next.

1:09:45

There's just a lot of check downs there.

1:09:47

So I don't think there are bad teams.

1:09:49

I don't think any of these three teams are bad teams.

1:09:51

I think they all have a good chance to finish over 500 and be a playoff team.

1:09:55

But we're talking about the bar to clear.

1:09:57

Do they look like an actual contender?

1:10:00

Waiting for this Broncos offense and I'm trying to be patient.

1:10:03

But if not for that miraculous comeback against the Rams, we're talking about them as a one in three team.

1:10:09

I would just like to see a little bit more progress with the offense specifically.

1:10:13

Well, the run game has been really bad.

1:10:15

JK Dobbins high this season was 49 RJ Harvey's high was this past week with 25 yards for game.

1:10:21

So that's not going to be good enough obviously to get it done.

1:10:24

I mean, I think if you were to shield the gift if you wanted to calm down,

1:10:28

which you seem on edge today.

1:10:29

I don't know if you had coffee or what's going on.

1:10:31

You're very excitable.

1:10:32

You're very panicked.

1:10:33

I would say if you were to kind of like take a step back and try to give this some perspective.

1:10:38

Okay.

1:10:39

They have a brutal schedule this year.

1:10:41

If you were to look at their first six games of the season before the season started at the chiefs,

1:10:45

Jaguars, Rams, at 49ers at chargers with the time we thought was going to be a playoff team.

1:10:51

And then versus the Seahawks.

1:10:53

If you were to look at those first six games, you would say,

1:10:56

you know, if they could go three and three and those six, I might take it because those

1:11:01

are going to be three really tough games.

1:11:03

So if you just do the first four chiefs, Jaguars, Rams, 49ers, I feel like while they haven't

1:11:08

looked great at two and two before the season started, you still might take two and two,

1:11:13

right?

1:11:14

And say, okay, this is going to be a tough beginning of the season, right?

1:11:17

Then if we look at like week seven to 15, that's where you can win six of eight and kind

1:11:23

of get back on track, then you start getting back into like wild card.

1:11:28

Maybe you steal the division mode, but their schedule this year was really tough.

1:11:34

It is when you look at the stats and just how low they rank on both sides of the football,

1:11:38

it's alarming.

1:11:39

And you know, to look at the on defense, you know, there's no Jonathan Cooper right now that

1:11:44

does make a factor.

1:11:45

He's still on the commissioners example.

1:11:47

It's, you know, now pat your hands beat up.

1:11:50

It sounds like I want to say week to week.

1:11:52

Cause I think he primates a couple weeks, but it sounds like he might be able to even avoid

1:11:56

injury reserve, which you would not have thought based on how he went down in that game.

1:11:59

There'd be up at those spots.

1:12:01

I have seen them before figured this out on defense.

1:12:05

And so I would think that they figured out offensively.

1:12:08

My takeaway just watching the Broncos right now is when you have like a gotta have it

1:12:12

moment when you, it's just like, all right, our best player, our best player.

1:12:16

I don't know who that is.

1:12:18

Jaylin Waddle has had on what is official or unofficial drop total is, but I've seen

1:12:22

him drop a bunch of passes.

1:12:24

It just feels like he's not comfortable.

1:12:26

Maybe he's pressing a little bit too hard right now.

1:12:29

Like where is Cortland Sutton in the offense?

1:12:32

You know, the running backs have been it's kind of a different combination every week.

1:12:35

They just, they seem like they're kind of grasping.

1:12:37

Okay, what exactly are we?

1:12:39

But Bo Nix hasn't played bad.

1:12:40

I don't think by any stretch.

1:12:42

It just seems like in terms of what's happening around him, where the football needs to go.

1:12:46

There's just a little bit of a feeling out process that's continuing to take place.

1:12:50

I don't see Sean Payton just like I said after week one.

1:12:53

It wasn't going to be after one week was going to be after four weeks.

1:12:55

We're going to have to have that every week.

1:12:56

All the organizational decisions.

1:13:00

But certainly they've got to be better.

1:13:01

They've just got to be a better team.

1:13:03

I've not walked away from Broncos game.

1:13:04

Yeah, going those guys suck.

1:13:06

That's not a playoff team.

1:13:07

Every time I'm like, I know there's more on both sides of the ball.

1:13:11

Like why aren't they playing better?

1:13:13

And there's a difference between you're not playing well and you're bad.

1:13:17

I think the Broncos right now are a team that's not playing well on either side of the football.

1:13:22

You know, and let's see, you know, over these next four weeks,

1:13:25

is you kind of figure some of those things out exactly what they are.

1:13:28

All right.

1:13:28

You guys have calmed me down a little.

1:13:30

You're right.

1:13:30

I'm a little bit, you know, high strone on edge, you know, it happened.

1:13:34

But there is truth to the idea.

1:13:36

Because you see this around the NFL with these teams and other teams.

1:13:40

The first however many weeks of the season, it's just like stay in it, pile up some

1:13:44

wins.

1:13:44

It doesn't matter how it looks.

1:13:46

And then at some point, find yourself, whether it's late October, early November,

1:13:50

where it's like, oh, okay, this is what we're good at.

1:13:53

This is what we're bad at.

1:13:54

Here's who's injured.

1:13:55

Here's who's healthy.

1:13:56

Here's this young player who we didn't think was going to contribute.

1:13:58

But now is a revelation.

1:14:00

And now we have more and more of an identity.

1:14:02

So maybe it's a little bit of that.

1:14:03

I think Tom's right about the makeup of the Broncos was always going to be

1:14:08

bone access to carriers.

1:14:09

It's been, hey, in this situation, you can win a lot of games with bone

1:14:13

X and it feels like that situation maybe hasn't been as uplifting as I at

1:14:18

least anticipated coming into the season.

1:14:20

But they do still have all three of these teams that I just mentioned.

1:14:23

They still have a lot of talent.

1:14:25

And generally it's smart to bet on talent.

1:14:27

So there you go.

1:14:29

There's still more games from Sunday to talk about.

1:14:32

We've got an undefeated team that can't score a touchdown.

1:14:36

We've got officials being suspended for using dirty words.

1:14:39

We'll talk about it.

1:14:40

I'm pro football, a whole of famous Brian Dawkins.

1:14:43

And I live for a long time with something I did not know the name of major

1:14:47

depressive disorder.

1:14:49

I carried sadness and anger because I thought I could handle it alone, but I

1:14:53

couldn't.

1:14:54

Now I want to make sure others know that that support is out there.

1:15:18

I needed more from my antidepressant.

1:15:20

So my doctor added cap lighta Luma Tepparon, proven to provide greater relief

1:16:12

When you think like an athlete, setbacks don't stop you.

1:16:17

But mindset alone doesn't get you moving again.

1:16:21

That's where I see odd steps in.

1:16:23

Ice works fast.

1:16:26

Heat makes it last.

1:16:28

So when the rest of the world settles because of a setback,

1:16:31

icy hot accelerates your comeback with fast-acting, powerful pain

1:16:35

belief.

1:16:36

Ice hot, you're so back.

1:16:40

I feel like every week we have some type of a what's going on the

1:16:43

NFC North segment.

1:16:45

We just broke down the lions.

1:16:46

The bears started their third, different quarterback in three weeks.

1:16:50

Kind of a grimy win where they had like 900 yards to 10 for the jets or

1:16:54

whatever it was.

1:16:55

You have the packers who were just

1:16:58

gutten it out every week.

1:17:00

Just feels like they're trying.

1:17:01

They got a million injuries.

1:17:03

Micah Parsons, it doesn't sound like it's going to be back for several more weeks

1:17:06

like that.

1:17:07

That helps not come in anytime soon.

1:17:09

And then you got the Vikings who are 4-0.

1:17:12

They're the first team since the Chicago Cardinals over 100 years ago to start

1:17:17

4-0 without with multiple games, not scoring a touchdown.

1:17:20

I feel I watched a decent amount of that game.

1:17:23

And as much as they are playing who they are, okay, they're playing to we've

1:17:27

got a great defense.

1:17:29

It is a bumpy ride right now, watching that offense, even though I do think

1:17:33

Tyler Murray, you saw him find a little bit of rhythm getting going with Addison

1:17:37

and even more with TJ Hawkinson in the game.

1:17:39

What do you make at a time there's only three unbeaten teams.

1:17:42

You got the cheese.

1:17:44

You have the 49ers and you got these Vikings.

1:17:46

What do you make them in a so?

1:17:47

See, this is nice.

1:17:48

Now we can do a roller reversal.

1:17:49

Now I can tell you guys settle down a little bit.

1:17:51

You know, they're undefeated.

1:17:53

Here's the thing with the Vikings is that they need the offense to be average

1:17:57

to be a very good team.

1:17:58

If the offense is good, now we're talking maybe an actual contender.

1:18:02

And they're not there yet.

1:18:04

But I watched that game and I was like, especially in the second half,

1:18:07

I know the first half was very ugly.

1:18:08

In the second half, I'm like, I am seeing signs of progress here.

1:18:12

You know, it's a 12-10 game.

1:18:13

It's tight and they have to put together two drives.

1:18:17

They put together two long drives later in that game.

1:18:20

Kyler Murray kind of got hot laid in that game, you know, with TJ Hockinson.

1:18:24

You mentioned he was completing passes.

1:18:26

He looked more comfortable.

1:18:27

They're clearly adapting the offense to what he's comfortable with.

1:18:31

They're playing out a shotgun alive, but they didn't have Justin Jefferson.

1:18:34

They lose two offensive linemen during the game.

1:18:36

They hit 336 yards.

1:18:38

You know, they could have had to touch down if TJ Hockinson didn't, didn't slide

1:18:41

there at the two yard line.

1:18:43

So I'm not telling anyone it's perfect.

1:18:45

But I, if I look at from last week to this week and given that it's the only

1:18:49

second full game that Kyler Murray has played for Kevin O'Connell, I was kind of like,

1:18:56

all right.

1:18:56

It lead, you know, it could have gone the other way.

1:18:58

It didn't go the other way.

1:18:59

He stayed healthy.

1:19:00

We're now at least I'm in a mode of let's see a little bit more.

1:19:02

The defense is going to carry the team.

1:19:04

You don't have to be great, but I kind of see a little bit here.

1:19:08

So yeah, I'm kind of like everybody settled down.

1:19:11

Anyway, now I was killed in the Vikings offense last week.

1:19:13

Now I'm like, you know what?

1:19:14

It looked a little better this week.

1:19:16

They still scored one touchdown since week one week one.

1:19:20

It was like, what is this offense?

1:19:22

Right?

1:19:22

You probably thought like, okay, this is going to be really good.

1:19:24

If they could put a 35 points five touchdowns a week with the defense that they're going

1:19:28

to have, like this is going to be a serious contender.

1:19:30

And then they've kind of just cooled the concern.

1:19:32

I guess is if the offense doesn't figure out as how far can the defense take you?

1:19:36

Right?

1:19:36

And to Shields Point, Hockinson did stop the one yard line.

1:19:39

So it shouldn't have been a five point game.

1:19:41

They should have won by, you know, let's say 12, 11, whatever it is.

1:19:44

Right?

1:19:45

The counterpoint would be Chris Bell stepped out a bounce about an inch.

1:19:48

And that was a touchdown that they gave up.

1:19:50

There was a massive play that he became an eligible because before he ran down field,

1:19:54

he had the foot out which by the way, that's on the equipment staff for having him

1:19:57

wear black shoes with the white sidelines.

1:19:59

Like that's one of those things that's very easily fixable where the white shoes could

1:20:03

have it be like, is there like a little sliver of green in there?

1:20:06

I don't know.

1:20:06

Like, are we going to call this?

1:20:08

So that was a fortunate situation for the Vikings.

1:20:11

But the 4 and 0 seems like a, this isn't seen that's going to go into feed it, right?

1:20:19

I don't think any of us think that it's a good position to be in.

1:20:22

But if the offense doesn't figure it out, there should be some concern as to how far

1:20:27

the defense can take you.

1:20:28

Also Justin Jefferson didn't play in that game because of his ankle.

1:20:31

He wants to play this week against the same.

1:20:33

So if he can't go, I fully anticipate he'll be back after the buy.

1:20:36

That makes a big difference.

1:20:38

But you guys are absolutely right.

1:20:39

I mean, the limited time on task for Kyler, who remember, split in reps the whole off

1:20:44

season with a guy who's no longer there just starting to find those things.

1:20:49

They just lost their left guard.

1:20:50

That's a big deal.

1:20:51

And also just Aaron Jones is giving everything he's got.

1:20:54

It's just not primetime Aaron Jones anymore.

1:20:57

So let's see how kind of things shake out of the running back room as well.

1:21:00

We also had one of several incidents yesterday involving officials in that game.

1:21:07

He was in that case Adrian Hill getting real upset because Eric Wilson bumped into him,

1:21:14

knocked him over.

1:21:15

He actually got shoved into him.

1:21:17

Hill said, you get out of here or something like that.

1:21:20

He gets suspended for a game.

1:21:23

You also had Jeff Seaman gets suspended two games for telling Tramack Bride to bleep

1:21:30

himself, bleep you, bleep you.

1:21:33

And then he had Mike Brable who got an unsportional conduct penalty for telling the ref.

1:21:39

It was a bleeping terrible bleeping call.

1:21:44

I assert this billy to you and I just want your opinion on this.

1:21:49

In terms of the hierarchy of what you should be penalized, so I suspended before, do any

1:21:56

of these rise to the level where you think it's beyond the normal thing in the game?

1:22:01

I felt no is the answer.

1:22:03

I think we just have more cameras than we ever had and we have more microphones than we

1:22:07

ever had.

1:22:08

But the Tramack Bride won.

1:22:10

I was like, I feel like this happens all game long, every game.

1:22:14

We just don't see it that clearly.

1:22:16

The situation where Eric Wilson bumped into an official, I've felt particularly bad for

1:22:20

because he was trying to help him up after.

1:22:23

And then he's like, get out of here.

1:22:24

It was like so mad at him.

1:22:25

It's like, this is clearly an accident.

1:22:28

He's trying to help you up.

1:22:29

Like, you don't have to get so mad here.

1:22:31

And then the variable thing, I mean, I feel like the coaches are verbally assaulting

1:22:36

the officials all the time and I would imagine they get it right back.

1:22:39

So I don't know.

1:22:40

I was kind of surprised that we saw the discipline that we saw.

1:22:44

And I'm guessing that this was just somewhat of a performative thing to be like, look,

1:22:48

the officials are not out of control.

1:22:50

Even though there's been more flags this year than I think in the past like 10 years

1:22:53

or something at this point in time, it's been crazy.

1:22:56

How many flags are?

1:22:57

But it feels more performative.

1:22:58

Like take a week off, take two weeks off.

1:23:01

You can go, we'll come back.

1:23:02

We'll make it seem like the officials are at out of control.

1:23:04

But it didn't seem that bad to me.

1:23:09

I mean, yelling F few to a player, that seems a little bit like you're on a power trend

1:23:13

all of a sudden.

1:23:14

I feel like that's a risk though you're willing to take, right?

1:23:17

Because there's nothing actually besides fines and rules restraining that player from

1:23:21

really getting back at you, right?

1:23:24

So yeah, but he's like on the side, he's like on the sideline there.

1:23:27

He's not like up in his face or anything like it.

1:23:30

When you become an official, you know that people are going to complain about calls.

1:23:33

You are at the highest level here with the most competitive people, you know, maybe in

1:23:38

any sport.

1:23:39

And yes, there's a line that they can cross.

1:23:41

We've seen in the past.

1:23:42

If they're in your face, if they're making contact with you, then all bets are off,

1:23:46

yell whatever you want.

1:23:47

But that feels like personal to me.

1:23:50

Like if it's like, you know, it's sort of like they, they are trained that if a player's

1:23:55

yelling at you or coaches very upset with a call, there is a way to handle that.

1:24:00

And I don't think that that's necessarily the way to handle that.

1:24:02

So I thought that one actually was out of line where I'm like, what is it?

1:24:06

I forget which official that was.

1:24:08

I don't remember all the.

1:24:09

Jeff Seaman.

1:24:10

Okay.

1:24:11

Yeah.

1:24:12

I thought he was out of line.

1:24:13

I'm good with the punishment there.

1:24:14

I'm with you on the air.

1:24:15

Wilson one.

1:24:16

I couldn't stop laughing.

1:24:17

Wilson.

1:24:18

Wilson.

1:24:19

He's so mad at him.

1:24:21

He's yelling at it.

1:24:22

He's yelling at it almost like a dad yelling at his child or something.

1:24:26

That's like it was an action.

1:24:27

100% that's my reaction when like I'll be walking through the kitchen, you know, like

1:24:32

I just got something off the grill and like the dog will come and clip my knees.

1:24:36

I'm just like, you get out of here.

1:24:38

Like that's what it was.

1:24:40

I just thought that was silly.

1:24:42

Listen, the NFL is like made sportsmanship a huge deal.

1:24:46

And if you want coaches to follow it and players to follow it, you also want officials

1:24:50

to find it.

1:24:51

Yeah.

1:24:52

It's your workplace.

1:24:53

You can't tell people bleep you at the workplace.

1:24:57

The variable one.

1:24:59

That's the one that I'm just like, I mean, he said it in his press conference.

1:25:02

He's like, I have said that 87 times since I've been ahead.

1:25:07

Oh, they got it because it was out of the box.

1:25:09

You're not supposed to go past a certain point on the sideline.

1:25:12

I think that was it.

1:25:13

But the flag for that man, it wasn't you're a bleeping idiot.

1:25:17

It was that's a bleeping terrible bleeping call.

1:25:21

To me, it's part for the course.

1:25:23

Yeah.

1:25:24

That's the thing.

1:25:25

Like this is like the you could call holding on every snap.

1:25:26

You could flag every coach 20 times a game for saying the F word about something.

1:25:32

I just, to me, Billy, I think that we get down a little bit of a slippery slope.

1:25:38

If we're going to start throwing flags for that again, unless you're going to have a

1:25:41

hardcore enforcement, right?

1:25:42

Like NBA coaches aren't supposed to go certain places and they're constantly going.

1:25:47

And if you cross half-corner something, you're getting teed up.

1:25:50

If you want NFL coaches not to leave the box, then enforce it all the time.

1:25:54

Don't let somebody sprint down to the goal line and call time out when they're not supposed

1:25:58

to be down there.

1:26:00

They've kind of had a lot of leeway.

1:26:01

The only thing you ever see them get busted for is when an official will run into them,

1:26:04

which I think we had that happen too.

1:26:06

Right?

1:26:07

There was Eagles Rams, yeah.

1:26:09

And so I get that part of it.

1:26:12

I just, Bill, if we're enforcing the, an F bomb is an immediate foul.

1:26:18

Like we're, this would be like if Simmons got the, like the FCC popped down on a

1:26:22

map to listen to the one pod.

1:26:23

I feel like, I feel like it's a little harsh.

1:26:26

It was a little, it felt like a sensitive weekend, especially when like a coach is getting

1:26:30

fine for doing the exact same thing and officials doing in another game.

1:26:32

It's kind of like, well, kind of a little bit of consistent here.

1:26:36

Consistent.

1:26:37

Yeah, I even think those are two different things than that.

1:26:39

We don't spend 20 more minutes.

1:26:40

But saying FU is different than that's a terrible F&C.

1:26:44

Like I actually think that that is, that is a different thing.

1:26:47

To be doing, you know, like the ref said, if you, the ref said, get the F back on the

1:26:52

sideline or, you know, I think that is fair game, but just yelling FU to him multiple times.

1:26:58

I would say that.

1:26:59

That is weird to me.

1:27:00

From the official's point of view, it's like, that was a terrible call.

1:27:02

This is my livelihood.

1:27:03

You're questioning my integrity now.

1:27:05

This is beyond just an FU.

1:27:07

This is worse than that.

1:27:08

Well, like if you said to your wife, not the either, either, either, either you guys

1:27:12

never do it.

1:27:14

But if you said, where are my bleeping keys would come off differently than bleep you,

1:27:18

where are my keys?

1:27:19

It would just, it would hit.

1:27:20

I'm not testing that, Billy.

1:27:21

No, neither one.

1:27:22

I'm going to let it snow how it goes.

1:27:25

I do, I do lose my keys constantly.

1:27:30

All right.

1:27:31

We're back on Wednesday.

1:27:32

I don't say that to my wife.

1:27:33

Just so we're abundantly clear on this.

1:27:36

Back Wednesday.

1:27:37

We're going ahead to week five.

1:27:40

I appreciate you all being here watching and listening.

1:27:44

Thanks, Arjuna, Chris, the whole team behind the scenes for Sheel and Billy.

1:27:47
