Coming up on the Zacklow show.

1:07

Preseason basketball is here.

1:10

There's a lot of news.

1:11

Tyree's Haliburne is back.

1:13

There's some injuries.

1:14

There's some early hot takes and observations.

1:17

Nikias Duncan.

1:18

I know he's mainlining preseason basketball the same way I am.

1:21

We're just going to go back and forth.

1:23

Random preseason observations and takes things.

1:26

We've noticed things that just were putting it our back pocket.

1:28

I know it's only preseason, but that could be interesting for the regular season two.

1:34

That's kind of alarming for the regular season two.

1:37

Then we pick each of us our single most intriguing player for the upcoming NBA season.

1:44

Then Nick Friedell is here to talk about the Warriors.

1:46

It doesn't seem great.

1:48

Isn't it better than we think it is?

1:50

What's going on inside the Warriors is Pajemski can get a new deal.

1:53

It's a hype about Yaxxolendaborg.

1:55

I like him too.

1:56

We talked to Nick about that.

1:58

Then Tyree's Haliburne came back last night and looked pretty damn good.

2:03

The Pacers looked good.

2:04

Guess who's here to talk about it?

2:06

Tyree's Haliburne coming on the Zacklow show to talk about everything that's happened

2:10

since game seven of the 2025 finals should be a fun conversation.

2:15

That's all coming up next on the Zacklow show.

2:24

Welcome to the Zacklow show.

2:29

The NBA is back.

2:31

Preseason basketball is happening.

2:33

There are already some fun on court trends.

2:35

There are some actually important injuries.

2:37

Unfortunately, we got to talk about Tyree's Haliburne is back.

2:41

Nakaya Stunken, if there's anyone I know who is watching some of this preseason action,

2:46

maybe focused on the Southeast division, maybe not along with your WNVA work.

2:51

It's you, so we're going to nerd it up about early season, not even early season,

2:55

preseason trends.

2:56

How are you this morning?

2:57

I am doing well.

2:59

There's been so much basketball this year that I am soaking in and enjoying.

3:02

I'm also trying to make sure I stay sane as we now have the WPLAYALS mixed in with all

3:06

the preseason things that are happening.

3:08

So lots of note taking, a little bit of sleep, but we're having fun.

3:11

Let me tell you, you're catching me on a good day.

3:15

I'm in a good mood today for two reasons.

3:17

Would you like to hear them?

3:19

Yes, I would.

3:20

Number one, Tyree's Haliburne played his first game since game seven of the 2025 finals

3:25

in Oklahoma City.

3:26

We all know what happened.

3:28

And the Pacers are back.

3:29

I know you watched the first half.

3:31

I watched the first half.

3:33

Obviously, he's a little rusty.

3:34

Obviously, he's kind of feeling his way into the games.

3:37

Not forcing anything.

3:38

There weren't any step back threes really in all the Tyree's like highlight stuff.

3:42

But the passing, the vision, the off ball movement, all the stuff that he immediately

3:46

injects into their offense was there.

3:49

I thought his movement looked pretty crisp and his ability to change directions on the

3:53

dime looked pretty crisp.

3:55

The shot is the shot.

3:56

It's always going to be there.

3:58

I thought it was a super encouraging first step.

4:00

Pascal, Siacum was playing so hard that it almost made me uncomfortable.

4:05

I was like, dude, chill.

4:06

I know you've been waiting to play meaningful basketball for a bit now, but I love to

4:10

Pacers immediately look like a team, like this is a team that knows each other.

4:14

And it was a nice reminder.

4:15

Like, we're here.

4:16

The East is loaded, but like we're here.

4:19

We're going to have some kinks to work out with the spacing and zoo bots in the bench.

4:22

And is it Jarrah's Walker?

4:23

Is it who's the backup five?

4:25

Oh, be top and look great.

4:26

But I'm in a good mood because the Pacers looked ready to go.

4:29

Yeah.

4:30

I think you nailed it.

4:31

They look more like themselves in this preseason game.

4:34

Forges as much as you can take from preseason action.

4:37

Tyree's immediately injecting a level of organization into his offense.

4:41

I think it was good.

4:42

I think the biggest thing for me as he works to knock off some of the Russ is just going

4:46

to be how often is he driving, how deep into the paint is he driving?

4:50

And so a little bit of a mix bag there, understandably so in his first game back, but you saw when

4:54

he was able to generate paint touches, the whole breadth of the offense opened up.

4:58

You can still get to those push outs if necessary.

4:59

He has the late dump downs.

5:00

He has to kick out passes in there.

5:02

And then when the ball is taken out of the basket, like he is just immediately getting

5:07

them all up there, like the pace is right there again.

5:10

So I'm excited for him, happy for him personally.

5:12

And then on top of that, he just makes this pace routine make a lot more sense.

5:16

I'll also just sprinkle in while we're here.

5:20

Jair's walker continued to raise the brow for me.

5:23

Fun preseason for him so far.

5:25

Six times and the first half, I think.

5:27

And clearly they've decided we're going random preseason observations.

5:31

So here's what they've decided that he's jumped over Ben Shepherd in the Ben Chyraaki.

5:36

I think that's a smart decision and his playmaking is why.

5:39

He looked like he looked, we'll see what the shot making and the decision making and

5:43

the defense, but he looked like the right upside bet to take like whatever the eighth,

5:47

ninth, but that guy's going to play 15, 18 minutes a night.

5:51

And I think as you get into some of the smaller liners, you're going to have him on the floor

5:55

with, I'll be topping with Pascal.

5:57

So yeah, I can like just having a little bit more size and still maintaining some utility

6:01

offensively is going to be important for them.

6:03

So I like what I have seen so far.

6:05

I just want to see more preseason action to see what it looks like when the game starts

6:08

to count, but stock up for J.S. Walker for me right now.

6:12

Let me tell you a story in a caes.

6:15

Fall of 1996, little Zack Low just turned 19 years old sophomore year of college.

6:23

I'm in a dining hall in college watching game wanted, American league championship

6:28

series between the Yankees and the Orioles.

6:32

My match that year, 71 and 91 disastrous season, but we were coming.

6:36

We had some young pitching.

6:37

We had some interesting players.

6:39

Todd Hungley was starting to become a thing.

6:41

I was a little upset about how the season went.

6:43

And obviously I hate the Yankees.

6:45

The Yankees had won the World Series in a long time.

6:47

It was a great era of bad Yankee baseball that was ending.

6:51

Game one, I don't know, you may be too young to know the name Tony Tarrasco.

6:56

Game one of the American league championship series almost 30 years ago to the day.

7:00

Tony Tarrasco was about to catch a mundane Derek Jeter fake home run to right field.

7:07

One of many fake home runs Derek Jeter would sneak over the wall in his career.

7:11

And then a fan, Jeffrey Meyer, reached over the wall, caught the ball, stole it out of

7:17

Tony Tarrasco's glove.

7:19

The Orioles never recovered.

7:20

There was no replay.

7:21

The stupid umpire Richie Garcia got to call completely wrong.

7:26

Game run Yankees win the game.

7:28

The gluttonous fans rejoice and 30 years later.

7:33

All baby, I hope everyone in that stadium felt a wave of joy pulsating in their bodies

7:41

when Anthony Volpe hit a home run over the wall when yet another gluttonous fan couldn't

7:46

help himself and reached over it.

7:48

It would have been it would have been a hit.

7:49

It would have hit the wall was not going to be it out.

7:51

I hope they all had what I had when Croatia tied the World Cup against Portugal and

7:56

the ref screw them.

7:57

I hope they had that joy.

7:59

And then it was ripped out of them because this time, 30 years later, the fan and was not

8:06

rewarded.

8:07

The Yankees were not rewarded.

8:09

They are going home having been swept by the Tampa Bay rays.

8:12

I was laughing this morning in my house telling what happened to my daughter who was asleep

8:18

and my wife who doesn't care.

8:20

I was laughing like the million dollar man Ted D. B. Ossie just cackling to the point

8:26

that my family thought is there something wrong with him.

8:29

I've never seen him like this before.

8:31

Am I a jealous bitter Metz fan?

8:33

I am.

8:34

Am I jealous that the Yankees have won far more than the Metz?

8:37

I am.

8:38

Am I angry that the Metz had a higher payroll than the Yankees this year and failed and the

8:42

Yankees were in the playoffs?

8:44

I am.

8:45

Would I take a sweep in the National League Division series?

8:49

I would.

8:50

All of that said, boy, am I in a good mood today?

8:53

I hope Tony Tarrasco wherever he is.

8:54

I don't know where he is is having a great day.

8:58

I hope Jeffrey Meyer wherever he is having a bad day and the razor moving on.

9:04

So I'm in a good mood today.

9:05

And the guy said, and that that kid in the dining hall, that 19 year old kid, I was really

9:09

upset.

9:10

I was unhappy.

9:11

I said, I can feel it.

9:12

I can feel the world shifting back to the Bronx in a way I don't like after all these

9:18

years of mel hall losing and non-matically losing all this.

9:22

And it did shift.

9:23

They won a little world series and it was a nice little karma.

9:27

Karma went 30 years, but it came.

9:29

You know, I am glad that you are in a good mood.

9:32

I didn't expect this to be the reason, but it's someone who's to the part that probably

9:36

shouldn't have been to eat all to be.

9:38

I am not a big baseball guy.

9:40

I have a lot of Yankees, Mutuals, oddly enough.

9:42

And so like seeing their tweets come through the timeline and the best of all the basketball

9:46

stuff that has happened.

9:47

It hurts.

9:48

It hurts.

9:49

Oh.

9:50

I was like, oh, nobody's having a good time right now.

9:53

And I can't even console because you have dream liberty going down to the wire.

9:58

And then eventually, ACE's boundaries was crazy in that fourth quarter.

10:01

But you know, I love this for you.

10:03

I'm glad the younger version of yourself got a little come up with the way things happen.

10:08

Am I proud of any of this?

10:09

I'm not, but it's who I am.

10:11

And, you know, self-worthiness is important.

10:16

The brewers are now our team in the little household.

10:18

But anyway, okay.

10:19

We're just going to bounce around preseason is what it is.

10:23

Some teams play their real guys, some teams don't.

10:26

The first half of these games is very different than the second half.

10:29

You can't read anything into it, but you can just like back pocket some fun stuff for

10:33

like, I'm going to remember this one, the regular season starts.

10:35

And sometimes the preseason matters like the 14, 15 warriors kind of announced themselves

10:40

in the preseason is like, this is a completely different animal.

10:43

Watch out for us.

10:44

So let's just go back and forth.

10:45

Some preseason observations that are interesting, good, bad, whatever.

10:48

You can lead off.

10:49

Give me something you've noticed.

10:50

Okay.

10:51

I will start with a little bit of propaganda.

10:54

I am super intrigued by this Memphis Grizzly team.

10:57

I think this is your, you're talking to the right guy.

10:59

I've been driving the Memphis Grizzlies playing bus for a few weeks now.

11:03

But so I'll let you sing it.

11:05

Go ahead.

11:06

So we are alive.

11:07

When we had you on the podcast earlier this summer, just talk about things that brought

11:09

us joy.

11:10

I think we both mentioned some Memphis Grizzlies related things in the midst of all the

11:13

losing that they did.

11:14

And so getting into this preseason action, they have that opening game against Atlanta

11:18

Hawks.

11:20

And the offense is well space.

11:22

The tempo is fantastic.

11:24

They are moving cam booze around the board.

11:26

Ty Drum looks fantastic.

11:27

They're cycling guys in and out.

11:29

They're maintaining their full court pressure.

11:30

Defensively.

11:31

So the tempo continues to be up.

11:32

And then they just continue to flow.

11:35

They can just die.

11:36

It's you up in so many different ways with so many different players.

11:39

I ended up tweeting it out.

11:40

Perkling the glass.

11:41

And I saw that game.

11:44

And I saw what the offense looked like.

11:47

Yeah.

11:48

This is why I'm high on them.

11:50

Earlier this morning.

11:51

I am watching the Grizzlies magic game.

11:52

And your little magic.

11:54

We're not very kind.

11:55

Particularly in the first quarter against the Memphis Grizzlies.

11:56

Like we are also going to do the full court pressure thing.

11:58

We are going to be super physical with you off the ball.

12:00

We're going to make sense.

12:01

I'm going to make sense of switches.

12:02

Let's see what your offense looks like.

12:04

And when the shots are falling.

12:06

And we're going to play.

12:09

what you're looking at.

12:10

And when the shots are falling, it could look pretty bad, which also some fun stuff happening

12:15

on the Orlando side.

12:16

Maybe we get there.

12:17

But it was cool for me, someone that is intrigued by this business team and ultimately

12:21

high on this business team for them to have this kind of tests in back to back games,

12:25

where you still, what it looks like when it's working, free form to get to Hawks team,

12:29

that was good last year.

12:30

And then you get this Orlando team with a bunch of sides, like you're seeing Tristan De Silva

12:33

on Ty Jerome.

12:34

It's like, okay, what does that look like if you put more sides on Ty since he's going

12:37

to have a lot of ball handling responsibility?

12:40

Good tests for them.

12:42

My entry remains.

12:43

I guess I'll leave it there so I don't get too happy.

12:45

But keep an eye on the business business is where I start.

12:47

I mean, I couldn't be more excited about Cam Boosert.

12:50

He's starting at the Ford, the matchup with Ben Carroll was awesome last night in guarded

12:54

Franz as well.

12:56

He's playing a little bit at the five.

12:58

And let me tell you, he had a moment where he was at the five at Nick Lutchevitch.

13:02

He was hit in threes was on him.

13:04

And he it was like immediate barbecue chicken.

13:07

I'm taking you off the bounce and one for Cam Boosert.

13:11

I'm super excited about the kind of next layers on peeling and cetera cowards on ball

13:16

game is a secondary pick and roll guy.

13:19

I guess my worry about the obvious worry about the grisies is they probably don't have a

13:24

top 50 player in the league on their team, depending on how Cam Boosert does this season.

13:29

And if Zach Edie is healthy, Zach Edie played last night.

13:32

He's been massively impactful when he plays.

13:34

We'll see how much he plays.

13:35

He completely changes their team.

13:37

I guess my worry is a, you know, they're going to win a lot of games with depth.

13:42

And so they're going to look really good in the preseason in the third quarter against

13:46

the other teams backups when their backups are playing the other teams backups.

13:49

I don't know how much that carries over.

13:51

I'm a little worried about their passing in overall and in their starting five like

13:57

Cam Booserts and awesome passer.

13:59

And they'll get places with Jalen Wells and Cedric Howard attacking close outs.

14:03

But I'm a little worried with Ty Jerome, who I really like and will score the hell out

14:07

of the ball.

14:08

I'm just a little worried about the collective passing, but I remain optimistic about the

14:13

grisies.

14:14

I think that's fair.

14:15

And I think just in terms of the scoring like one of the things popped from the early,

14:17

it is Jalen Wells and the start lineup instead of Jeremy Grant, which I should have figured

14:21

that was the way to go just to get some lineup bouncing going to make sure the second unit

14:24

has a level of punch to it.

14:26

So we'll see how long they stick with that.

14:27

I don't think the passing thing is unfair.

14:29

I think that is where kind of their space in front most of the way they scheme things

14:32

and how quickly they move.

14:34

I think the theory is, we'll be attacked so quickly.

14:37

And you have so much ground to cover as a defense that we can open up easier passing

14:40

reads for everyone.

14:41

And so as long as you're able to maintain whatever advantage they get, they should be

14:44

okay.

14:45

But I do think that is a fair quid system.

14:47

My turn.

14:48

I watched the Bulls first preseason game last night.

14:51

Okay.

14:52

I'm just putting this in my back pocket.

14:55

The floor was really open for Caleb Wilson and modest Bozellis to do their sort of second

15:01

side slicing diagonal attacks with Jalen Smith starting at center as a real stretch five

15:08

and Nick Clackston was injured, not playing.

15:10

Obviously, there's a defensive cost and I have a Nick Clackston.

15:13

You're just not as good.

15:14

You're less switchy all of that.

15:16

But I'm just like just already I'm putting it in my back pocket of like Caleb Wilson

15:21

will see how the shot comes.

15:23

Bozellis will see how the shot comes.

15:25

I think it's probably kind of a done deal as a I don't know if it's going to the off

15:29

to dribble three is ever going to be a plus and not a minus for him.

15:33

The captain shoots fine.

15:34

He's always open.

15:35

I just they're all downhill attacking players with size and shaky slash unproven jumpers.

15:41

I just like the way everything looked with a stretch five in there and I'm sure the Bulls

15:46

have noticed that too.

15:47

I'm at Jalen Smith was great off the bench last night.

15:49

It was last year, rather.

15:51

I'm just I'm just putting a pin in that.

15:53

That's all.

15:54

I think that part is fair.

15:55

Like I want to dig into that one in particular, but I think broadly speaking, the Bulls were

16:00

a team last year.

16:01

You look at the shot profile.

16:02

We get to the rim of time.

16:03

We're going to get a bunch of threes up.

16:04

We're not going to take mid rain shots.

16:06

Maybe to the chagrin of my tossing zealous who may want to experiment a little bit more

16:09

inside the arches in the middle of the floor, but either way, like very structurally

16:13

sound in times of the shot location at the very least.

16:15

They're going to play with tempo.

16:17

And so if you do open the floor and line up with Jalen Smith at the five, that is more room

16:20

for Josh Gated to get downhill, which quietly got a little bit better dealing with contact

16:24

last year, the 14 foot floaters or push shots turned into 11 foot floaters and push shots.

16:29

So continue to map out that progress.

16:31

Caleb Wilson is going to get downhill.

16:33

My toss museum is absolutely going to get downhill.

16:35

And so the bones are there structurally.

16:37

Did you get any kind of internal growth?

16:39

It's going to be an offense that annoys defenses that are already formed at the very least.

16:43

So I appreciate the shot.

16:45

Your turn.

16:46

I guess what we're talking about fun offences and spacing in general.

16:50

I'm going to run a quick get Wilson to use the Nurgish, but okay, well, let's let's

16:54

let you continue it to jazz because I want to hit Nurgish for sure.

16:58

Oh, yeah, I'll go to you.

17:00

We can hang with her, but I'll get Wilson to use the Nurgish.

17:03

We'll circle back to that front.

17:05

But getting to see what this Utah Jazz offense looks like, I already was pretty high on it

17:09

heading in just because of the stuff they run the way that will party spaces as guys,

17:14

particularly the bigs kind of getting more things.

17:15

You need to sing this with Darren Peterson, where he compared it to Somerley, where he's

17:20

had the ball in his hands a lot to now.

17:22

Here's the anti-George initiating.

17:24

We can let Laurie have the ball a little bit.

17:25

Use the Nurgish before going down.

17:27

You have some of the high post high post up stuff.

17:30

I like to fit in the context for Darren Peterson.

17:33

And in general, I think this Utah offense is going to be very good.

17:37

They just have so many things to poke at as an offense.

17:39

They have so many skilled guys, so many mismatches they can create.

17:43

I'm excited to watch the offense.

17:45

I think the floor is going to stress me out.

17:47

And I think starting the preseason against the Denver Nuggets of all team will probably

17:51

accentuate some of the problems that they're going to have on that front, both in terms

17:54

of how they can match up physically and from a size perspective, how well they can end

17:57

positions.

17:58

And if you could just out, I have even bigger questions about the rebounding for Utah.

18:03

But offensively at the very least, they're going to put points on the board.

18:06

You nailed it with Nurg.

18:08

Look, if you missed his four weeks, which is his reevaluation timetable, tack on another

18:13

week, just because that's how it usually goes.

18:16

It's like 12 games, because we're still well into the preseason.

18:20

It's not the end of the world.

18:21

Like we always overreact to these short term injuries.

18:23

Teams just find ways to win random games that maybe it looks like a bad matchup on paper.

18:27

The jazz have a lot of talent.

18:29

I'm with you.

18:30

I think offensively this team is going to be really good defensively.

18:33

You lose his size.

18:34

You lose his rebounding or in all of that for a team that doesn't have a great defensive

18:40

infrastructure or the triple J.

18:43

Everyone else, I'm curious to see who is actually guarding the elite ball handlers on the other

18:49

teams, because Darren Peterson is not ready.

18:51

He can't do George isn't ready.

18:53

And this gives them an opportunity, I think, to experiment with, hey, how does it look if

18:59

we either start a smaller lineup, like maybe Ace Bailey slides into the starting five.

19:04

Maybe Josh Akogui slides into the starting five instead of just replacing Nurg with Jackson

19:09

Hayes or whatever.

19:10

And like we're committing to big ball, which I think is how they want to play with Nurg.

19:14

This gives them a chance to see like, hey, maybe does it make more sense for us to start

19:19

a wing with some defensive size and acumen.

19:22

I mean, Ace Bailey is not quite ready for that yet, but he's interesting.

19:25

But I agree with you, the cost on defense and just the facilitation you lose in the high

19:29

post and how Markin and works off the ball and how triple J works off the ball.

19:35

It's a meaningful loss that could cost them a game and every game's going to matter.

19:40

It's a really an opportunity for Kyle Phil Palski to play with the two starting base,

19:44

because you know, passing is probably his best skill.

19:48

As long as we're on injuries, a couple of other things we should mention.

19:51

Man, I don't even know what to say about the Clippers at this point.

19:56

Like, it might be time for Chuck DeCondor to fly south for the winter or something because

20:03

Brandon Ingram suddenly's got partially torn Achilles.

20:06

Max Truce got hurt in preseason.

20:07

He's going to be up for a while.

20:09

It's just not, it's not going well.

20:13

And obviously, Max Truce is there to get traded eventually no matter what the Clippers say.

20:17

So maybe none of this really matters.

20:19

It's just, I really would like the next Clipper headline to be like Keaton Wogler gets a puppy

20:26

and it look how cute the photo is and not any of this.

20:30

And then in Philly, really sad one, Ariel Huck Forty, who was said to be their third string

20:35

center and maybe their second string center while adembono is injured right now.

20:39

But still towards Achilles, I mean, just a brutal, brutal break for a guy looking for an

20:44

opportunity to get real minutes.

20:47

And you know, Nick Nurse came out and said, yeah, we're going to just do like backup center

20:50

by committee.

20:51

Bono will get first crack.

20:52

We've got Dom Barlow.

20:53

We've got your barri walker.

20:54

You mentioned going small with Dean Wade or LeBron at the five.

20:59

I would be very cautious about doing anything that over taxes LeBron'd at all in the regular

21:06

season, including guarding fives or acting as the five defensively.

21:10

Obviously, he can do it.

21:11

He's like guarded yoke kitchen spot minutes and done fine.

21:14

He can do everything.

21:15

But that's just a bummer for a team where that position is critical because of how many

21:21

games in bead will miss.

21:23

And you know, like I don't think Huck Forty is like changing your season either way,

21:26

but it would be nice to have as many as many cards in that backup center deck as you

21:31

can.

21:32

Like I think on the field of front, one, just a blanket injury suck and like seeing that

21:36

happen in real time and seeing the slow more replay when it ends, I just hate all of that.

21:42

Within the actual encore context, I think you know that you want to have as many options

21:45

in the four slash five room as possible.

21:48

So you can maintenance a you need a little bit during the regular season.

21:51

You don't want to put that on LeBron.

21:52

You want to say that for like high leverage matchups in the ultimate of the playoffs.

21:55

If you want to get that go that small.

21:57

And for a sixers team that already had like some defense of rebounding questions about.

22:03

Losing your backup center depth certainly doesn't help ease my concerns on that front.

22:07

So I'm curious to see how I'm going to play out of that.

22:08

And because of how the sixers built their team.

22:11

They're dealing with apron restrictions.

22:12

It's not like they can even sign another big off the street just to help in a short turn

22:17

if they want to like it's going to have to be some a trade of some sort to make that

22:20

work.

22:21

So I'm curious to see if they wait this out and just world with the option that they have

22:23

or if they do try to make some sort of like two for one deal or something just to loosen

22:26

things up.

22:27

We'll see what happens on that front on the clippers and call your sentiments that I

22:30

have said that you just get the late anger news.

22:34

Max Bruce in the first quarter of the opening free season games.

22:36

He goes down.

22:37

It's like, well, it didn't take long and I was enjoying it.

22:39

I actually had clipper notes prepared.

22:41

It was like, I kind of like how the offensive's functioning.

22:43

I am excited to see for however long he is healthy,

22:47

there is garlic at the helmet of the offense without having to like share with another small

22:50

guard, et cetera.

22:53

I just want as many good vibes for clipper fans as possible because this entire summer

22:58

has just been nonsense for them specifically.

23:03

I would do all too good vibes when I let's see some serious darlin.

23:06

Let's see.

23:07

Really had to murder continue to shoot like 80% on threes and come off staggers and get

23:10

open looks without having to dribble.

23:11

Let's see Keaton Wagler continue to build on what has overall been a strong summer for

23:16

him like a shaky first of summer league game.

23:19

But he's responded in a real way getting more comfortable attacking till to be fenced.

23:22

So there are some fun to be had.

23:24

I would just like for those who stay healthy enough for us to be able to talk about it in

23:27

earnest.

23:28

All right.

23:29

My turn.

23:30

Speaking of the sixers kind of.

23:33

It's been two preseason games, whatever.

23:35

I didn't watch both of them.

23:37

The AJ Mitchell Jared McCain bench duo is going to light the fucking league on fire all

23:42

season.

23:43

I mean, they are going to just blitz opposing second units with their collective off the

23:48

dribble scoring three level scoring.

23:50

Kane's been throwing some bullet pick and roll passes in the preseason and they are just

23:55

I mean, obviously sometimes AJ Mitchell might start if somebody's out and all of that.

23:59

I just think they're going to light up opposing second units.

24:03

And a day, Mara has shown some really fun flashes and preseason.

24:07

I will see how it carries over but like a couple blocks and then dunks on the other end

24:12

in transition.

24:13

A couple post ups over smaller players on switches that looked pretty deft.

24:17

But again, they've got a million centers on the roster and the dilemma of how much do

24:21

we want to play CHEP at center now that our perimeter guys are all healthy and we have

24:25

enough wing depth to maybe do that more.

24:27

But I just say McCain and Mitchell, it's just not fair.

24:31

The dynamism that they're bringing off the bench.

24:33

I mean, they are going to be toying with some of these opposing second units.

24:37

This under team is going to be so incredibly good again.

24:42

And just a quick hat to to my guys, Steve Jones, who was I think live tweeting that game

24:47

last night and getting into more thoughts earlier this morning.

24:49

So I want to get to watch that one in full.

24:51

I've got to see a little bit.

24:52

I'm also seeing like clips on his timeline.

24:55

But this is kind of what the thunder do.

24:58

They build up second units.

24:59

They trust they give start throws to the young guys.

25:02

Once they evolve, they get traded to keep the books cleared and other guys still post like

25:06

an assembly line of quality talent.

25:07

And so now you get a full season of the Jared McCain experience.

25:10

Here's to see what he does inside the art but outside of it.

25:13

He's going to light it up in OKC needs all the shooting that he can provide.

25:17

And we saw what Age of Mitchell did last year, like just continuously got downhill and

25:21

self created the minutes with him and Shay let the league on fire last year.

25:25

And I'm sure whether he starts or not.

25:27

There's going to be plenty of time where he is playing alongside shake ups and like letting

25:31

him toy with the second or maybe the third best point of defender on the floor.

25:36

That's not a fun proposition for defense.

25:38

And I'm right there with a dive are like if there's any sort of like chat injury or if

25:42

I say a hardsteins out or whatever, being able to go to that guy.

25:46

For like 15 minutes, like yeah, have fun trying to store at the rim when you already have

25:50

all of these perimeter defenders ahead of you that's ready to say the ball from you.

25:53

They're going to turn you over on top of that.

25:56

It's unfair.

25:57

It's well done.

25:58

I'm excited to see more from your turn.

26:01

Well, I am wearing like a Miami Bay shirt.

26:03

So I will circle back to the very first preseason game of the 2026 27 season.

26:10

Heat rappers was a lot of fun.

26:12

Finally, I saw what Yannis in Toronto,

26:15

or Yannis in Miami looks like against the Toronto rapper stood didn't have everyone.

26:19

So again, preseason caveats all they could stuff.

26:22

My baseline question is something I talked to Eric Bolster during like introductory press

26:25

or things earlier this summer was how does he feel like the blend is going to go between

26:30

the spacing principles that they introduced last year and ultimately removing screening

26:34

as a concept.

26:35

It felt like it's a within that.

26:37

And now having Yannis who is very good at like inverted pick and rolls.

26:41

And when he wants to screen can also be a very good role on top of that.

26:45

Getting to see the mix of Yannis with a clear floor.

26:49

As the heat are just kind of cutting and relocating all over places, get now hill.

26:52

He's generating catch a shoot three is for everyone on top of that.

26:55

And then when you don't stick to shoot or we do stick to the shoot.

26:59

He's now getting all the way down hills.

27:00

It's like, this is what you want to look like if you're the Miami Heat.

27:04

You're seeing Clay Thompson's all fall Grammy pop.

27:06

You're seeing Bam out of bio being booed around the board.

27:08

And you're seeing Yannis and Bam in tandem.

27:10

Just kind of switching out loading up help protecting the rim.

27:15

Color Larson looked good and Wiggins looked good.

27:19

Again, it's preseason, but like that's kind of what you wanted to see.

27:23

Multiple drives clean catch a shoot looks created.

27:26

Not a lot of like redundancy in the half court.

27:29

The defense was switchable and active, but you still had a presence at the rim on top of that.

27:34

It's not going to be what they shot from three every night.

27:36

Like that's kind of the formula you wanted to see.

27:38

So I just wanted to give a quick hand to the heat for what they look like.

27:41

Yeah, I mean, if you honest is healthy, they're going to be a very good team.

27:43

If you place 70 games, whatever 68 games, they're going to be a very good team.

27:47

He's got to be healthy in the playoffs, which he hasn't been.

27:50

I'm still interested in just sort of the what is Bam doing when Yannis has the ball.

27:55

Question and how they work that out, but there's a lot to do.

27:58

There's a lot of places he can be.

27:59

They can play two man game together a little bit.

28:02

Agree for sign encouraging.

28:05

All right, my turn.

28:07

Two Minnesota observations.

28:09

Okay.

28:09

Number one, Jada McDaniels looks ready for a big season.

28:13

He's just playing and has played for a while, but these these preseason games he's been playing

28:19

with just a level of like bravado and confidence on offense that feels even a little bit

28:25

amped up to me.

28:26

And I just think to Kaminga fit.

28:29

It's been two preseason games.

28:31

I was kind of pessimistic about the spacing of it on offense and sort of like how are

28:36

they going to work with that?

28:37

I'm intrigued after two games.

28:39

It's going to be messy and clunky on some nights because that's just the nature of the

28:42

beast, but a the aunt Kaminga McDaniels trio is pretty fucking big and physical on the

28:49

wing on defense.

28:51

And you've just seen enough of like like Lamello Kaminga pick and roll on one side of the

28:58

floor.

28:59

If you switch Kaminga's rolling ahead of that switch and Rudy's in the dunker spot looking

29:03

for an outlet pass and Kaminga's so fast that even if the help is there, you can go through

29:07

it or even more promisingly like Aunt Kaminga empty side pick and roll on the right side of

29:13

the floor, kick to Lamello, Lamello go bare pick and roll on the left side when the defense

29:18

is already in motion already compromised like they're hitting all and they're running

29:22

Kaminga clearly has the green light to like grab and go on train in transition.

29:27

Like they're hitting the right buttons for that to be a workable offensive combination.

29:31

I'm still a little skeptical and I you know, if it if it doesn't work very well, I.O.

29:37

Coming in is the obvious solution.

29:40

The bench is like really dependent on Terrence and his junior looks all right and bear

29:44

and Jay looks all right and you know bones whose bones, but I the first glimpses of the

29:49

Kaminga go bear fit look a little zippier than I anticipated honestly.

29:55

So you know TBD, but I there a team obviously that everyone is super intrigued to watch.

30:00

I like that.

30:01

I think we just talked about the worst little bit on the recent episode of the Dungers

30:04

but I think the thing that popped first year and I was just the injection of pace like

30:08

it's obvious because Lamello balls in the building, but like just seeing how quickly

30:12

they're getting the ball across half court, how quickly they are flowing from side to side

30:15

as you already mentioned.

30:16

It's one thing to have the threat of Lamello on one side and on the other.

30:19

It's another thing where you have to deal with that within like 12 seconds instead of

30:22

18.

30:23

And so the fact that you have that kind of skill, that kind of pace on top of that just makes

30:27

it difficult to deal with.

30:30

One of my baseline questions for the rules is going to be like how do they deal with teams

30:32

that want to switch?

30:33

And so having a Kaminga that is willing to slip out of there and you have finishing opportunities

30:37

or even if you just talk about transition stuff, he doesn't mind like sealing people.

30:41

Oh yeah.

30:42

He should be doing it already like if I got a small on me randomly like I'm going right

30:46

to the rim and they're feeding them the ball.

30:47

Yeah.

30:49

They are already looking at this preseason so checking boxes is going to be aggressive

30:53

but it's like good to see sound process on that front to where we can't hit these slips.

30:57

We can't hit these duck ins or seals already.

31:00

We have some side to side flow without two star guards.

31:03

And just and I will also just know I think they more and others have hit on this.

31:06

It feels like they've already thrown like 30 lops in the preseason already like the

31:10

vibes just generally seem to be high.

31:12

And so I also glad you hit on kind of the defensive struts of like the perimeter guys so far.

31:17

I also can't deny on how attentive these guys are going to be off the ball because the

31:21

line of the strut in the way that you would imagine there's going to be more switching

31:24

one through four with Rudy kind of roaming the back line.

31:27

It's not enough to switch.

31:28

You still do have to be active.

31:29

You still have a plug gap.

31:30

Still going to be ready for relocations and cuts and things like that.

31:32

It's very early but I've been encouraged that has to sustain as we get into regular season

31:37

basketball for the walls but they very much have top three offense top six top seven defense

31:42

potential.

31:43

So I hold in it.

31:44

Do you say top three offense?

31:45

They can.

31:46

I think the three point race certainly going to be up there.

31:48

And nervous is incredibly good.

31:50

Lamell is going to juice the transition attack and this is a rules team that have guys

31:53

that can get out but historically haven't been a great transition team throughout this

31:56

era at the very least.

31:58

I think it's on the table.

32:00

It's I like that.

32:01

All right.

32:02

Let's take a quick break.

32:03

We'll toss around a couple more quick ones and then hit our most intriguing players for

32:06

the upcoming season.

32:10

This episode is brought to you by State Farm.

32:13

Every player brings something different to the field.

32:15

Some at speed, some at power, some have their own podcasts.

32:18

That's true.

32:19

That being said, no two players are exactly alike and the same is true off the field.

32:24

That's why State Farm takes the time to get to know you so they can help personalize

32:27

coverage for your life and budget like a good neighbor.

32:31

State Farm is there.

32:33

All right.

32:36

I guess it's your turn.

32:37

You got one.

32:38

Go ahead.

32:39

I will be quick with this one.

32:42

Watching some Sacramento Kings.

32:44

I kind of like there is a cuff and the Montess of bonus together.

32:49

I have all the questions in the world about what that's going to look like defensively.

32:52

I think like we saw last year, this is very much going to be a bonus at the level.

32:56

Let's hope our rotations behind it are going to be strong.

32:59

But there is a cuff show very early on in some going back to some belief that he's going

33:03

to be a guy that created his own shot.

33:05

He's comfortable to navigate in tight quarters.

33:07

He can shoot.

33:08

He can drive.

33:09

There's a fun play making chops.

33:10

He has to decide in two paths and how often he wants to do so.

33:13

But the passability is there.

33:14

And with the Montess of bonus, one, you use them as a hub that takes some of the creation

33:18

burden off of A.C.

33:20

And two, one of very basic but important.

33:21

Note, he is such a good screener.

33:23

And his exchange is on hand.

33:25

Dogs does such a good job of forcing the finish to go over.

33:27

It makes life easier for there's a cuff to put guys in jail and they kind of navigate

33:31

those tight quarters inside the arc.

33:33

So just a quick note on that duo offensively at the very least.

33:36

I am intrigued.

33:37

I like what subonus can mean for A.C.O.

33:39

For however long subonus is going to be in Sacramento.

33:42

This is a pro.

33:43

I don't doubt that he's going to do subonus things and play super hard and ferociously as

33:47

he always does while he looks for the exit door.

33:50

I have a good king story for you about how their season started.

33:54

I heard this about a week ago.

33:57

I called up people who could verify it.

34:00

It's been verified.

34:02

At their first they get they all arrived for training camp.

34:04

They went out to a fancy training dinner.

34:06

Team the whole team to staff everything.

34:09

And at the dinner of a Vecca Ronda Dive spoke and he kind of turned the dinner into a

34:16

roast of lots of people in the room telling them all the ways in which they have been failing

34:23

as players, coaches, executives, whatever.

34:28

And I checked with the kings and they confirmed the gist of that I would say.

34:35

Some people were alarmed and were like this is not going over the way you intended.

34:42

Some people thought I get what he's doing.

34:45

He's using the fact that we've become a media punchline to motivate us.

34:50

He was not saying I the Vecca Ronda Dive, believe these things about you.

34:54

But here's what people say about you.

34:57

Prove us wrong.

34:58

But it was described to me as a prolonged roast that landed with some of the audience and

35:03

not some of the and some of the audience not as much.

35:07

So like the kings are the kings.

35:09

Okay, a couple more rapid fire ones before we transition.

35:12

I mentioned the bulls.

35:13

Dale and Swain dribbling the basketball makes me a little bit nervous.

35:18

But you know, like he won't have to do that as much when the real games start.

35:23

I'm already tired of Dylan Brooks and the season has even started yet.

35:27

Just like a knock.

35:28

Just like enough, man.

35:30

Like really like I know this is your stake and you've become famed.

35:33

We all got it now.

35:34

Just like save it for when it really matters.

35:37

And the pelicans, I just took note that they started eaves me see over Derek Queen in their

35:45

preseason opener, which I think if you want to have a competent defense and a more engaged

35:52

Zion, I think that's probably the way to do it.

35:56

And yet Zion still again, preseason game, whatever.

36:01

He's just still in this netherworld of like old Zion who I sewed and ran pick a point

36:07

Zion Zion who would occasionally center like not that often, but occasionally Zion who

36:13

was really the fulcrum of everything the pelicans had.

36:17

That guy like exists here and there, but a lot of times even with me see starting and

36:22

all the ball handlers they have it at one point they played.

36:24

I took notes.

36:25

They played Jeremiah fears, Jordan pool, Benedict, Mathurine and Sadiq Bay all together.

36:30

I'm like, good freak and luck making that work on offense.

36:34

But he's still a lot of times just kind of hanging around the baseline, dunker spot extended,

36:39

not as involved as he used to be.

36:41

So I just, there's a lot of talent on this team.

36:45

And I've joked before like as jumbly as it is.

36:49

And I mentioned that lineup and all the guys who need the ball.

36:52

It was going to be like a fourth quarter, like a quarter of every, every week where you

36:57

watch them.

36:58

They're like, did they just score 45 points in a quarter and look like the best team in

37:02

the world.

37:03

And then the next quarter they're going to give up 40 and like turn them all over eight

37:06

times and probably lose the game.

37:08

They're just such a bizarre team.

37:10

But I just don't think design situation can be scrutinized enough in terms of like he's

37:15

on a semi expiring.

37:16

Do they, is he really a part of their long term core?

37:19

What is he who would trade for him?

37:22

It's just a strange brew over there.

37:24

Yeah, it's like they've reached the inflection point of how much they want to invest in him

37:29

because you have Derek Queen in the building.

37:31

And because it just kind of feels untenable having them on the floor together defensively.

37:35

So you do just kind of get to a point where you have to choose one and try to accentuate

37:40

their strengths, but also kind of hide their weaknesses on defensive end.

37:42

I don't think you could do that for both with the rest of the personnel that they have.

37:45

I'd say other quick notes that I have to kind of close things out back to the Kings.

37:49

That may just be because the roster doesn't have a bunch of good defenders at all.

37:53

But in summer league, Emmanuel Sharpe popped for me immediately.

37:57

And in preseason, he will foul, but he's going to be very physical.

38:01

He's just a very good screen navigator while I'm thinking about random defenders.

38:05

Alpha Diallo and Denver.

38:06

Yeah, very fun.

38:07

I think I'm already forcing, I think, an ace second violation in his first preseason

38:12

game.

38:13

I'm just like, okay, that seems like a lot of fun for me.

38:16

John thinks that anything else I want to hit those are probably the two.

38:22

Oh, I treat by the Lakers tossing out some of their acquisition wings, some of the young

38:26

guys, ramp it up full court pressure.

38:28

We'll see how much that sustains as we get into the regular season, but they didn't feel

38:32

like a high pressure group last year.

38:33

And so that seems like a little bit of a shield for them.

38:35

We'll see if Jay Juretik speaks with that.

38:37

JJ is optimistic.

38:39

And so I take note of things like that because JJ says nothing lightly.

38:43

I think the Lakers are going to win a lot of games.

38:45

I just think the two teams in the West that are juggernauts are just going to be too good

38:49

for almost everybody.

38:50

Okay, let's shift gears.

38:52

Every year I would write this column when I used to be a writer, my six most intriguing

38:56

players for the season.

38:57

I have done that version of the podcast already over the summer.

39:01

I don't even remember who was on it.

39:02

Scoot Henderson was one of them.

39:04

And I said, I have separately a player who is my no brainer, most intriguing player for

39:10

the entire season.

39:11

I'm going to do a standalone segment on him.

39:13

So that's what we're going to do today.

39:14

And I said, I want you to pick.

39:16

I know you and Steve Jones on the Dunker spot.

39:18

Wonderful podcast.

39:19

Everybody should listen to it.

39:20

I have done your sort of version of that.

39:22

Most interesting players are intriguing players.

39:24

But I said, why don't you pick one?

39:26

And so we'll have our like actual apex, most intriguing players.

39:30

The guys were like most obsessed with for the season.

39:32

So I'll let you go first.

39:33

Who's your guy?

39:34

I know who your finalist for this world.

39:36

But I don't know who you picked.

39:38

I ultimately stuck with the Eastern Conference.

39:41

I would live in Bob Lee for this.

39:44

There are a bunch of reasons.

39:45

One, he is incredibly good at basketball and young for a Cleveland Cavaliers team that

39:49

I feel like as I've seen projections and read articles and tweets and listen to different

39:55

pods, you think about the top tier of the Eastern Conference in his naturally New York because

40:00

they just won a lot of Boston low, a lot of feeling intrigue.

40:04

There seems to be a very wide range on how good the Miami Heat are going to be for people.

40:08

Some feel like they can be top three.

40:09

Some feel like they're just going to be in the play in because the role players, whatever.

40:13

And I'm just like the calves did just make the Eastern Conference finals.

40:17

They did.

40:18

It wasn't the best version of themselves in the Eastern Conference finals because the

40:21

mix just kind of blitzed them.

40:22

So I understand some of that, but like they're really good.

40:25

And when you zoom out with that playoff run in particular, I think you can very much argue

40:29

that Evan Moby was just their most impactful guy in their playoff run.

40:33

And I don't know if that gets enough attention.

40:35

And when it does, it feels like that is brought up within the lens of, well, that's because

40:39

Donald and Mitchell didn't do what he was supposed to do.

40:41

That's because James Hart and did the playoff thing again.

40:43

It's like, Evan Moby is really good.

40:45

I think because he didn't make the Capitol L leap last year, some of the subtle

40:49

roof that he did make last year went under the radar.

40:51

Like I did feel like he was a better passer.

40:52

I did feel like he dealt with contact on drives a little bit more.

40:56

He was more intentional about hitting first on some of the post touches and on some

40:59

of the drives in particular.

41:00

Very quietly converted to career.

41:02

I see three percent of his two's and he was at 63 percent of his two's during the playoffs

41:06

as well.

41:08

And he's been in all defense candidate.

41:10

If not a deep-woiter since he has stepped into the NBA and so forth.

41:13

Caps seemed that I still think at the very least it turned out regular season wins.

41:18

If we do actually get another creation lead from Evan Moby or there's just more play

41:22

strength in general, which unlocks more lines with him at the five, and which means he gets

41:26

to build more picking role chemistry with James Hart and that looked really good during

41:29

the regular season last year.

41:31

The caps should be in the mix to come out of the East.

41:34

Like I don't think that is an egregious take to have.

41:36

And so for me, I'm watching once again on what level of growth we see from Evan Moby

41:41

on top of him being really good on both ends of the floor already.

41:43

I was going to ask you what specifically is the source of intrigue.

41:49

Like what are you watching from him?

41:50

We're like, I want to see what's different this year.

41:54

You mentioned more picking roles with with Hardin, maybe with with with him at center.

41:59

You mentioned his passing.

42:00

Yeah, yeah, the small uptick and assist last year and then an even bigger one in the

42:03

playoffs.

42:04

His three point shot kind of disappeared, 29% on on three a game.

42:09

Obviously that would be helpful.

42:11

It feels like we've been saying that for four years.

42:13

You know, part of my, as you may have heard, I don't trust the Cleveland Cavaliers when

42:20

I'm picking teams to come out of the East.

42:22

I don't trust James Hartin in big games.

42:25

And I just feel like, I don't know how you feel about this.

42:28

I thought the paid Watson trade was a very good move for them and they kind of move that

42:32

they should be doing and the player profile that they've been searching for.

42:35

I do think like the first 30 games of Watson, Moby, Alan is going to be a little clunky.

42:44

And there's going to be a lot of learning curve to like, all right, he's in the corner.

42:48

Teams aren't guarding him, even though he shot very well in the corner.

42:50

If he does that again, team so guard him, not like the most intuitive catch and go playmaker,

42:56

but can do it.

42:57

The guards both dribble a lot.

43:00

It just feels like it's going to be a little clunky on offense and they have this lever to

43:04

hit off the bench of going small with Watson at the four.

43:08

You throw in Tyson for one of the bigs.

43:10

You throw in Sam Merrill, both of them, whatever.

43:13

I just feel like the Cads are going to, are going to have to search a little bit for what

43:18

is our optimal rotation.

43:20

What is our optimal five-man lineup to close games with all the stuff other teams all

43:24

have to do too?

43:25

I just, I feel like it's going to be a little clunky for them.

43:27

I don't know how you think about that.

43:29

I don't think it's unfair.

43:31

I think, because I think we'll big picture a question that I had for Cleveland and we had

43:34

talked about this when we had to chase down guys on our podcast.

43:38

Kenny Atkinson pressed a lot of buttons last year in terms of how he wants the offense

43:42

to function, different lines he wants to press.

43:44

I think there is, in general, a thin line between experimentation and doing so to the point

43:49

where you don't really know what you're bringing.

43:51

Like what I just pressed all the buttons on the joystick hoping that my outfielder throws

43:56

to the right base or my guy steals home or something, just matching the buttons.

44:01

Yeah, it felt like a little bit of that in some key moments.

44:04

And so I do think broader strokes, who does Cleveland want to be?

44:07

I think that's a fair question to ask.

44:09

And within the clunkyness that you expressed, it wouldn't surprise me if that is the case.

44:12

I do think if you lean into more of a mobile high post creator and they've already done

44:18

that before in this time in Cleveland, you can, you can alleviate some of those concerns.

44:23

Like I don't think James Hart and Donovan Mitchell have to dribble as much if you are utilizing

44:27

mobility in that way.

44:28

It's something that I've cited a few times during the summer at this point, whatever

44:32

mobility, one of my favorite stats of last season is I think among a little under 200 guys

44:36

that ran at least 200 picking roles last year.

44:39

Nobody generated more points for possession.

44:40

First take a picture of them.

44:41

They ever mobility did.

44:42

As the ball handler as the ball handler.

44:44

It's like they use the only guy over 1.2, which again, 200 compared to like, Lucas

44:49

running a thousand, et cetera.

44:51

It's like some of that is still in there.

44:53

When you pair that with the growth that I think he displayed as a driver and as a foul

44:56

draw, which quick aside, the free throw shooting has to perk back up for him because that

45:00

was just weird for him last year.

45:02

60% last year after two straight years over 70.

45:05

Yeah.

45:06

So like that is in theory, low hanging from him to grab.

45:08

So if you average just 20, that might be a part or why.

45:10

But like I just think you can use them as a playmaker to kind of balance things out within

45:14

the offense.

45:15

Takes a pressure off a Mitchell, takes a pressure off a hard unlock some of the cutting

45:18

and relocation from paid to what's on top of that.

45:21

And with this growth as a self-creator, you can get into different looks offensively.

45:25

And I think the defense is just going to be there for him.

45:27

Like I he is just one of the best defenders on the planet.

45:30

And so my entry lies with like what the overall use of him is going to be or what the split

45:34

is going to be.

45:35

Because I have an idea of what actions he's going to be used into is just how much of each

45:38

one.

45:39

But I think you nail the right balance.

45:41

It makes life easier for everyone.

45:43

He becomes more impactful and Cleveland should be right there in terms of the upper echelon

45:47

to use the confidence.

45:49

I mean, the numbers every year with mobility and Allen together are unbelievable.

45:56

And defensively your infrastructure is so sound with those two.

46:01

And yet I'm still like not 100% convinced that that's a 25 minute game lineup in the

46:08

playoffs against great defenses unless something about how they play changes.

46:13

And maybe that's exactly what you're saying, just using your tools differently.

46:19

Because it just felt like offense was just too hard for them last year.

46:24

So this is I'm struggling internally with this myself.

46:27

Like it just so you have James Harden and Donovan Mitchell and two big guys who have made all

46:32

star teams before you've got shooters.

46:33

You've got lots of this stuff.

46:35

They just felt like it was so hard for them to generate really good shots analytically,

46:41

perhaps that's not the case.

46:43

But just a lot of dribbling like Donovan's passing kind of leveled down a little bit in

46:49

the postseason.

46:50

I think that's less about him and just more about the ecosystem not being quite right.

46:53

And then when I'm saying struggling internally, I'm saying Toronto, Holaceous defense, Detroit

46:59

Holaceous defense help both in both cases by the referees allowing more physicality in

47:04

the playoffs.

47:05

And the next just on the greatest magic carpet ride in the history of basketball and he's

47:10

on both ends of the floor.

47:11

So maybe, maybe my biases or whatever are over indexing on like blaming the calves and

47:20

under indexing on like, maybe it was just a suboptimal set of circumstances for them offensively.

47:25

But they just feel a little more uncertain than I'd like them to be even as you know, they

47:30

did make the conference finals.

47:32

And I sit here and I always say, well, it was a very uninspiring conference finals run.

47:36

And again, on the surface, it was like two game sevens against the Raptors who were

47:40

missing Brandon Ingram.

47:41

And I don't like you can sit here and say the Raptors are better without Brandon Ingram

47:45

and help them.

47:46

Like at some point, you need a requisite amount of scoring on your team to win a playoffs

47:50

series and not having quickly like objectively did hurt them, even though he would have been

47:55

hunted a little bit on defense.

47:57

And then they won game seven in Detroit on the road like infatically.

48:02

That was a really a great win.

48:03

And you know, I don't know.

48:05

I don't know how to feel about the cast.

48:07

This is I just don't trust them.

48:09

I don't trust them.

48:10

I don't trust them.

48:11

And I'm never going to trust them.

48:13

Okay.

48:14

That's it for me.

48:15

You want me to make my pick or any other thoughts on the calves?

48:18

I think we can flip you up here's the here who you have.

48:22

Well, you know, it's not just because you're here as the president of the Southeast Division.

48:28

By the way, I think every division, like I think every division like the conferences

48:33

and the NCAA should have like a fake president like who doesn't really do anything with

48:38

that.

48:39

And it's you say you would be my nominee for the president.

48:41

I will take that.

48:42

And you would just have to just give speeches everyone.

48:44

So about how great the Southeast division is and you know, create fake rivalries where

48:49

like whoever wins the season series between the Hornets and the Heat gets like a trophy

48:53

of some kind and all that.

48:55

My most intriguing player for the upcoming NBA season is brought to you by State Farm.

49:01

I think to me, this is a no-brainer.

49:03

My most intriguing player for the season is Brandon Miller in Charlotte currently up for an

49:08

extension.

49:09

I think they will probably get I would bet if I had to bet I would bet I'm getting something

49:12

done before the season.

49:14

Obviously, he's missed a lot of time with various injuries shoulder stuff last year.

49:18

The off season was, you know, he had to take some time to keep recovering from that.

49:24

He's a real eye of the beholder player.

49:27

Pessimists would see I think a Brandon and Grim 2.0 where the numbers and the physical

49:35

profile look great and it just doesn't translate into enough actual impactful winning stuff for

49:41

whatever reason.

49:43

Optimists would see I think a quicker more live player than Brandon and Grim a more alert

49:50

at Defender than Brandon Grim.

49:52

Someone who has more potential on that end if he stays healthy.

49:57

And the Hornets have clearly like look, the the Lemmele Ball trade was a lot of different

50:01

things.

50:02

It was a bet against Lemmele Ball.

50:04

It was a slight hedge against like we don't really think what we were last year was 100%

50:09

real in a world in which a third of the league was tanking and we yet again didn't get

50:14

out of the play in tournament.

50:16

It was a linked to that a bet on if we keep acquiring assets and assets and assets, we're

50:22

going to be the most nimble team in the league and already have a couple of really important

50:28

foundational players in Brandon Miller and Conn Canippell.

50:32

At the end of the day, it's also a big bet that both of those guys are actually foundational

50:38

players that they can be stars in their own right.

50:41

And I think, I think they're right about Brandon Miller.

50:45

I would be an op I would consider myself a Brandon Miller optimist.

50:51

I know the health the health issues have been there.

50:54

I know he doesn't get to the rim perhaps as much as you would like a guy who has the ball

50:58

as much as he had to get there.

51:02

His passing numbers are kind of met and if you look at the tracking data, he has one

51:06

of the lowest assists rates out of like all the hundreds of players who ran some requisite

51:10

number of thick and rolls.

51:12

There's that.

51:13

I think defensively he's been just okay a little bit fowl prone when he gets tired.

51:18

I just look at him.

51:20

I think the package is there and I look at all the different ways he can score should

51:26

be playoff ready ways to score like he can get to that that Chris Paul snaking mid-ranger

51:31

anytime he wants on the pick and roll except he's six eight and Chris Paul is six foot flat.

51:37

And I think he's going to learn on a lot of those plays where they end up in mid-range

51:44

shots or just he picks up his dribble and kicks it out.

51:47

He's like one dribble away on the pick and roll from having that retreating big man in

51:53

a real bad position.

51:54

He's one dribble away from drawing a foul at the rim.

51:56

He's one dribble away from creating a lob or a pocket pass to his big man.

52:00

And I think he has the right intentions and he's going to see that and you see flashes

52:04

of all of that stuff the right pass the hesitation dribble and drive to the rim.

52:08

Yeah, he's not like the most explosive first step athlete vertical athlete when he gets

52:14

a runway he is and he's very crafty and his change of pace, his crossover dribble,

52:19

his hesitation moves.

52:21

Those kind of things like make you effectively faster and more explosive than you actually

52:25

are in a raw way.

52:28

And I see absolutely no reason why he should not be a plus defensive player.

52:32

He can get skinny around screens.

52:33

He's big.

52:34

I think his activity level needs to get a little better.

52:37

But if I were betting, I would bet on Brandon Miller and I but I'm interested to hear

52:42

what you think of the Ingram comparison and sort of I'm more optimistic about Brandon

52:48

Miller than that.

52:49

I have no idea where you fall on him.

52:51

No, like one that as a Southeast enthusiast, I appreciate you bringing Brandon Miller to

52:55

the table first and foremost.

52:56

But no, in all seriousness, the Brandon Ingram comp is interesting to me.

53:00

Like my immediate thought as you're going into it is like, well, Brandon Miller already

53:04

and maybe this is just a product of when he entered the league.

53:06

He is already more willing to take threes and take threes off the bounce that Brandon

53:09

Ingram has ever been 30 and 36% on pull up threes last year.

53:14

And he takes like 10, not pull up 10 almost like 10 total threes per 36 minutes.

53:18

That's difference number one.

53:20

Yeah.

53:21

And so like him being if you're going to be pull up heavy as a wing for me, at least aesthetically,

53:26

I want a larger diet of that to be behind the arc.

53:29

And so the fact that he's willing to do it already just kind of gives him a leg up for

53:32

me when it comes to the Brandon Ingram comparison.

53:34

But like inside the arc, I think my biggest question for him now and moving forward is just

53:40

what level of force is he going to play with?

53:42

And I think you already kind of alluded to it because I do think you see these possessions

53:46

to where like he'll snake, take the extra dribble and kind of play through some contacts.

53:50

It's in there.

53:51

And as you mentioned, when he does have a runway, like he has some incredible ducks.

53:55

And it's a rare package already.

53:57

But I think in general, he's going to have to be more intentional about how he navigates

54:01

tight quarters.

54:02

The fact that he already kind of has the snake and keep it defender and jail can operate

54:06

and get into pull ups is encouraging that that gives him a foundation to build on.

54:10

Let me take that extra dribble snake back the other way and get into some of these scoops.

54:13

Like you see some of those on the film, the finishing isn't always there.

54:16

But like the fact that it's kind of in the wheelhouse for him at the very least, it gives

54:20

us something to build off of.

54:21

So I'm fascinated to see like how quickly he can grow in that because if he does, more

54:26

free throws should come.

54:27

He again, already has a three point thing.

54:29

And like I'm glad you brought up the playmaking portion because like I was looking at a lot of

54:33

the same numbers.

54:34

You look through some of the picking rolls or you look through some of the handoff reads

54:37

for him.

54:38

And it's just like, here's a pass that you wouldn't expect them to be able to make.

54:44

It's a live dribble skill that just kind of comes in random.

54:47

It's there sometimes.

54:48

Yes, like it's nine regular like early pickups and then swing to the wing or something.

54:53

And then it's just live dribble skill.

54:54

Just like obviously it's basketball.

54:57

You can't just say, hey, just do that over and over and over again.

54:59

If you would, he would be the Luca Dantian instead of Brandon Miller.

55:01

But it's just like if that's there, can you do that three times a game instead of once?

55:07

Then have to be 10.

55:08

And so I'm intrigued by that portion.

55:10

And like looking at some of his picking rolls where he was getting two on the ball.

55:12

And one, it wasn't something that he saw super often and with Lamello out of the building

55:16

now, I am fascinated to see how often he gets that coverage.

55:20

And then when he does get it, how does he handle it?

55:22

Because one of the things that popped from me to add to my notes is like, these are some

55:26

good place, some well placed passes.

55:29

He is super retreat heavy.

55:30

But he's in the second of winter.

55:31

He is backing up five six feet.

55:33

He said he said half court and it's hard to make the first pass quickly when you're going

55:40

backwards like that.

55:41

That's one of the things that stuck out for me.

55:42

And he's blitzed.

55:44

It's pretty hit or miss.

55:45

And I want him to get off the ball faster.

55:47

But like you said, part of that is an experience thing.

55:50

And the Lamello void.

55:52

I mean, obviously Kobe White is a very good player.

55:55

We'll see how that works.

55:56

I think it'll be fine.

55:57

Nas Reed is a spacing for that.

55:59

I'll open up the floor more than it was last year.

56:02

When Miller and Kiniple played without Lamello last year, they were like minus 10 per

56:06

hundred possessions now.

56:07

When you throw Kobe White in, it was very limited.

56:10

Like very limited, but it looked good.

56:13

So I'm just like the burden on him is going to be different.

56:15

He and Kiniple are both when they're healthy.

56:18

Khan's already heard too.

56:19

Hornets have like a bunch of injuries already.

56:21

They're going to have to do a little bit more of the heavy lifting on the ball.

56:25

And like all of that make like, I think I don't think the Hornets are a playoff team

56:29

this year.

56:30

I think they will take a tiny step back.

56:31

That's totally fine.

56:32

That was built into the Lamello trade.

56:34

I just think they're a super intriguing team for tons of different reasons.

56:39

And Miller being the very top one.

56:41

I think that is more than fair.

56:43

And I think as I'm thinking about Charlotte structurally because they led the league in

56:47

like guard screens by a very wide margin.

56:50

And when you have Lamello, you can do that as he can initiate and he can also be part

56:53

of those ghosts.

56:54

I do wonder what that is going to look like when it is Brandemiller said, you're saying

56:57

those ghost screens or those brush screens for Kobe White instead of Lamello are those

57:00

just going to be switches.

57:02

And just in general, how often will Charlotte see switches and what does that look like?

57:06

That's where some of the flashes of.

57:08

And I think we talked about this on the darkest spot.

57:10

No, you talked about it last year when the Charlotte Hornets were on their run.

57:13

Like Brandemiller taking some of these switches and seeing some of these smalls and like actively

57:16

going it.

57:17

These guys in a way that we weren't accustomed to earlier in this career.

57:20

It's like, okay, this is positive progress.

57:22

Continue to do that.

57:23

Continue to stack those reps.

57:24

But like it's in there to play with a little force.

57:27

Now, next up, I think.

57:29

I'm going to say the next step on some of those Mitch, Matt's funny that he did last

57:32

year was can we turn some of these jumpers over the outstrets arms of a small defender

57:37

into free throws?

57:38

I think it's in there.

57:40

Play strength has increased.

57:41

Handle has to get a little bit tighter.

57:43

And again, the mentality to get deeper into the pain has to be there.

57:46

But like the seeds are there.

57:47

So like I certainly understand why the entry level is high with Brandemiller, especially

57:51

when you tie that into Lamello trade plus Miller being extension eligible right now.

57:56

Like I think he's if he's not already better than Brandon Ingram, I think he will be

58:01

soon.

58:02

I would take a little of Brandon Ingram now, frankly, but I think Brandon Ingram is fine.

58:06

That's not a shy for anything.

58:07

He's okay.

58:08

I think the upside comparison and the guy I see a little bit when I watch him and I'm not

58:12

saying he's going to be as good as this player because very few people are.

58:17

But could he be 90% of Jason Tatum, 90 like the big apex wing who's like maybe not the

58:25

best passer in the world, but has a great mid range jumper.

58:28

Squares in a lot of different ways can spray it out, can defend like just sort of a jack

58:32

of all trades at that size who can shoot three's off the dribble, get to his mid range or

58:37

whenever like, could he be that is that?

58:40

I don't know, it's just the guy that I see.

58:42

I don't, I don't again, like he's not going to be I.

58:44

You should never bet on anyone being as good as a guy who makes first team all NBA every

58:48

year that he's healthy.

58:49

But I think Brandon Miller will make an all NBA team sooner rather than later I would

58:52

bet on him.

58:53

He is my number one most intriguing player for the season.

58:57

Nakai is Duncan.

58:58

What's your dunker spot schedule with Steve this week?

59:00

What do we got?

59:01

Oh, we it is we're in the middle on the NBA side.

59:03

We're in the middle of the vision previews.

59:05

So we are doing the Pacific division on Friday.

59:07

So if you are a fan of either the LA teams, the Warriors, et cetera, we are going to be

59:10

digging in and then on the W side, we are just deep and play off prep again.

59:14

I'm flying out or flying back to Vegas later today to see if the Aces extend their season.

59:19

So it's just going to be a mixture of the vision previews and W playoff content over

59:23

at the dunker spot basketball.

59:25

It's a great pod.

59:26

Steve's the best year of the best.

59:27

Nakai is thank you and speaking of the Warriors, we're going to bring on Nick Friedel to talk

59:31

old and stay Warriors.

59:34

That's the sound of a baby being born at St. John's.

59:39

That's the sound of your celebratory first meal being served.

59:44

That's the sound of sunshine pouring into your spacious room.

59:49

And that's the sound of a happy baby taking in its first view.

59:54

Because when it comes to your birthing experience, we've thought of everything.

59:58

St. John's everything for the better.

1:00:04

All right, Nick Friedel is here.

1:00:06

He's wearing a Cubs hat to remind me about P. Crow.

1:00:09

I'm strong.

1:00:10

That is noted and not appreciated.

1:00:12

Here's what we're going to do.

1:00:14

I haven't talked too much about two of the sort of stariest franchises in the league, the

1:00:18

Lakers and the Warriors, the California franchises.

1:00:22

I think the Lakers are just going to be good and really good and not as good as the Thunder

1:00:26

and the Spurs, but we're going to have Dan Waukey next week to do a Lakers deep dive.

1:00:30

And the Warriors, the Golden State Warriors, kind of just over here to the side, not forgotten

1:00:37

because Steph Curry's there and there's some Linda Borg buzz and Pajemski's extension

1:00:42

eligible and they still have all their picks and like, Dremons going to do stuff and Jimmy

1:00:47

Butler might come back.

1:00:49

But just, it feels a little depressing, Nick Friedel.

1:00:54

They're over under his down to 36 and a half.

1:00:57

Jimmy Butler is going to miss a large part of the season, half of it.

1:00:59

I don't know, something like that.

1:01:01

Porzingis is gone.

1:01:03

I don't know what's going on with him.

1:01:05

Al Hufford is very old and will miss a lot of games.

1:01:08

Steph Curry missed a lot of games last year.

1:01:09

He's old.

1:01:10

Moses Moody is out for the season.

1:01:13

They're always going to be fun because Steph is a show when he plays.

1:01:17

The system is a show when he plays.

1:01:20

Dremons and Steph have the chemistry that will never die.

1:01:22

Linda Borg looks like a perfect fit.

1:01:24

I like Pajemski, despite the fact there's been some sort of up and downs with him.

1:01:30

I like Brandon Williams adding a little speed off the bench.

1:01:33

Like there's stuff here, but man, I can't, I can't like get into this team.

1:01:38

Can you, can you tell me like what's, what's happening?

1:01:43

It is always good to see your buddy and what I would tell you what's happening with

1:01:46

this group is they are the most interesting trade deadline team there is.

1:01:53

If we could hit the fast forward button and go to the beginning of February, that's when

1:01:58

it gets really fascinating because I'm with you on all the things you outlined there.

1:02:04

They're not great.

1:02:06

They could be okay, but so much of that is contingent on Steph being out there for a lot of games.

1:02:12

I'm not sure at this stage with that knee, if that's possible.

1:02:16

But the real question to me is what happens at the deadline is Jimmy back, what does he

1:02:21

look like?

1:02:22

Are they potentially going to move him?

1:02:24

Are they going to potentially move Dremon when the time comes that Porzinga's deal could

1:02:29

be used in something with nobody knows what the hell is exactly going on with his health

1:02:35

situation.

1:02:36

So they have a lot of major major decisions to make, but they've got to make them heading

1:02:43

into February right now.

1:02:45

They look like a middle of the road team, but the Steph spotlight still shines so brightly

1:02:51

that you can't look away completely because when he is out there and he's okay health wise,

1:02:57

he's still awesome.

1:02:58

He's amazing.

1:02:59

He's a force unlike any other in the league.

1:03:03

I love Landiborg.

1:03:04

I know Anthony Slater, your colleague, covered the Warriors for ESPN, talked about how it

1:03:10

was Burys or Landiborg for them and then the Bucks made that decision for them basically.

1:03:15

He's 24 years old.

1:03:17

How many times are we going to hear it repeated that he's older than Jonathan Kaminga many,

1:03:21

many times.

1:03:22

He's a perfect fit with the Warriors.

1:03:23

He looks awesome in Summer League.

1:03:25

He shot the three well.

1:03:26

He shot the three okay in college pretty well last year too.

1:03:30

He looks just like an absolute seamless fit in the Steph Dremon, Steve Kerr, flow offense.

1:03:35

He's setting back screens.

1:03:37

He's running two man inverted picket rolls with Steph.

1:03:40

He's running two man without a wharf, he's cutting to the right spaces, hitting his shots.

1:03:44

He can defend pretty much anybody.

1:03:47

I think his sort of attention to detail on defense needs to improve a little bit but he's

1:03:51

a rookie.

1:03:52

He stands pretty upright.

1:03:54

Those reads off the ball and we're switching or we're not switching those are tough.

1:03:57

I think they've got a gem in him.

1:04:00

I just don't really know.

1:04:03

I guess I can't, I'm just, if you had told me that the Warriors got a gem of a rookie

1:04:07

who I think will make an all rookie team for sure.

1:04:10

I would be more excited than this I would think but I'm just not, I'm not that excited.

1:04:14

I got to say Nick like, it seemed like a scorcher when I said it last week and I don't

1:04:18

think it's a scorcher at all.

1:04:19

I think the Warriors are very much at risk of missing the play in tournament, not the

1:04:23

playoffs, the play in tournament.

1:04:25

I think there's a tenth best team in the West and one of those teams behind him, Memphis

1:04:30

or Dallas is going to exceed expectations and I just don't really like this team and

1:04:36

if Steph misses 30 games and those 30 games overlap with Jimmy being out, it's going to

1:04:41

be like kind of a nightmare.

1:04:43

Yeah, they are going to make it.

1:04:46

Insect to your point, I like Jackson a lot.

1:04:49

He fits very, very well.

1:04:51

The only question I have is defensively, is he going to be there every single night because

1:04:57

all anybody says who's been around him since summer late when he won the MVP is the guy

1:05:02

is huge.

1:05:03

He fits all over the floor but there are times you watch him in summer league and at least

1:05:09

early in the preseason and you're like, all right, well, he can shoot the hell out of

1:05:12

the ball.

1:05:13

But is he going to bring that intensity that they want every night on the defensive end?

1:05:18

That remains to be seen.

1:05:19

But to the larger point about where they are as an organization, if you're banking on

1:05:24

the Warriors being pretty good this year, potentially a French playoff team, you're banking

1:05:30

on basically two guys, not named Steph and they're yaxle being in the running potentially

1:05:37

for the rookie of the year if he's as good on both sides.

1:05:40

I'm not going there, but we'll see.

1:05:43

He's got to get to a point where you trust him every single night.

1:05:46

Insect, he's got to play and he's got to play well.

1:05:50

They don't have a lot of other options.

1:05:52

But the other point and it's crucial in any Warriors conversation, they have to have pods

1:05:59

be a little bit better.

1:06:01

And if you believe that the Warriors can get to a better place than they were at last

1:06:06

year, pods has to take that proverbial next step.

1:06:10

Now I would tell you, haven't just been out in Hawaii for a week for training camp with

1:06:14

them.

1:06:15

Pots looked awesome.

1:06:16

You talk to any one of those players, the coaches, they say he's been working on his

1:06:20

game.

1:06:21

He's in better shape.

1:06:23

He looks more confident.

1:06:24

He's the one that's been telling you, Axle, you got to be aggressive with Steph on the

1:06:28

floor because he needs you to shoot it and take pressure off of all the defenses laying

1:06:34

into him.

1:06:36

But that's really the issue with this Warriors team.

1:06:39

Everybody's been through it.

1:06:40

The core is so old that if you believe that they can be better, what you're believing

1:06:45

is the Axle and pods are the guys to help you do it if Steph can stay upright.

1:06:53

So a lot of ifs there, but I can tell you at least in the short returns of the last

1:06:59

couple weeks of training camp, Axle, they love him.

1:07:03

That Kerwan's him to be more aggressive.

1:07:06

He thinks he's a little too passive, especially with Steph, but that will come with time as

1:07:11

a rookie in pods.

1:07:13

He wants that new deal.

1:07:14

He looks motivated to be the guy that he's always thought of himself to be.

1:07:20

The question is can his game follow that up this season?

1:07:25

I like pods.

1:07:26

First of all, pods is definitely in the top five of most jarring hair transformations of

1:07:31

the offseason.

1:07:32

I was like, wait, what's happening?

1:07:35

The curls are gone.

1:07:37

And it just I think he looks a little tougher.

1:07:39

I think it's working for him.

1:07:41

I like pods.

1:07:42

I think he's like a solid fourth to fifth starter or depending on team context, six man kind

1:07:50

of guy.

1:07:51

I mean, 14, five and four on decent shooting last year.

1:07:55

He's a solid defender.

1:07:56

He takes a million charges.

1:07:57

He's not a great defender.

1:07:58

But he's pretty good.

1:07:59

I think that's a good player.

1:08:01

He hasn't he hasn't been helped by Joe Lakeups comments about him and he hasn't helped

1:08:06

himself with some of his comments about himself and that has contributed, I think, to outsize

1:08:11

the expectations among fans.

1:08:13

He's a good player.

1:08:15

You mentioned he's extension eligible.

1:08:17

I'd be curious what you're hearing about that.

1:08:19

I have noted before that his cap hold is $17 million.

1:08:24

The warriors are clearly a team that wants to be in a position at least to potentially

1:08:28

use cap space next summer for one last run or one more run at a big time addition or two

1:08:35

next to staff.

1:08:37

And so I've said I would bet on an extension with Pajewski happening, but right around

1:08:42

that cap hold number so that it doesn't really hurt their space at all.

1:08:46

But I honestly like I we're getting towards the deadline hasn't happened yet.

1:08:49

What are you hearing?

1:08:51

It has always felt like it would get done.

1:08:53

In fact, you know, I've been doing this way too long.

1:08:56

When you see both player and team say, Hey, we want to get this done way more often than

1:09:02

not, especially before these deadlines, it usually happens.

1:09:06

Paj likes being out here.

1:09:08

Don Levy and Kerr really like him.

1:09:11

You figure that the number is somewhere in there.

1:09:14

It always felt like it would be somewhere around 20 to me, maybe a little more depending

1:09:19

on the market.

1:09:20

But he seems comfortable out here.

1:09:23

And Kerr really seems to trust him and that trust is only going to grow.

1:09:27

So I'd be surprised if you and I are talking a couple weeks from now and it's not done.

1:09:32

The real question to me though is if you're the warriors and your pain pods and you've

1:09:38

paid staff and now you have Yaxl again, this ties back into what we're doing.

1:09:44

Well, what happens after that?

1:09:47

And that's what nobody seems to have a clear cut answer on and they're kind of waiting

1:09:53

to see how this plays out for context.

1:09:57

Jimmy is still months away.

1:09:58

He was in Hawaii, but you know, he's not able to do all that much.

1:10:02

Although he kept reinforcing.

1:10:03

I can dunk if I need to.

1:10:05

Okay, great.

1:10:06

But he's 37 years old coming off a major, major knee injury.

1:10:12

And he keeps saying he wants to stay with the warriors, but in order to do so, he's not

1:10:16

going to be anywhere near another max extension.

1:10:19

Dremons, a 27 million this year.

1:10:22

He's not going to be anywhere near that if he ends up wanting to stay.

1:10:26

So there are a lot of major question marks in the future.

1:10:31

But if you get the pods deal done and you still like the way Yaxl looks a few months from

1:10:36

now, those are the two core pieces with staff.

1:10:40

And I think that's really else is kind of up in the air, but specific to pods.

1:10:45

I think that there is enough push on both sides to make it happen before the deadline.

1:10:55

I would be if you told me Jimmy, by the words on the active roster for half their games this

1:10:59

year, I think they would I would sign up for that if I were a Warriors fan, not not playing

1:11:03

half the games because he's obviously not going to play back to backs and all that.

1:11:06

But that would in my mind on ballparking like January one or something like that for

1:11:12

Jimmy, which is a lot of the season.

1:11:13

It's half the season almost.

1:11:15

You mentioned the expirings, Jimmy and Dremon.

1:11:19

For Zingas has only three million guaranteed on a player option next year.

1:11:23

I feel like they're going to keep his contract on the books for trade purposes, at least

1:11:28

through this season and then decide.

1:11:30

The cap space thing is super interesting because it might it might impact how they approach

1:11:36

this season.

1:11:37

What were they with Jimmy when Jimmy first came, weren't they like 24 and 7 with him and

1:11:44

stepping on what he was like some crazy record, right?

1:11:47

Yeah, I mean, they had Steph from the outside and Jimmy would get to the foul line and provide

1:11:53

a completely different look.

1:11:54

I mean, they fit from a basketball perspective.

1:11:56

No question.

1:11:57

Neither one of them can stay healthy.

1:12:00

So I could, you know, the cap space weapon for them can be used in the off season, potentially

1:12:06

in a lot of different ways.

1:12:07

It can be used just to sign free agents.

1:12:09

It can be used to make lopsided trades where you take in more salary than you send out

1:12:13

or then you normally be allowed to take in because you have the cap space to do it.

1:12:18

And everyone's like fixated on how they control all their draft picks, but one and even that

1:12:23

one is top 20 protected.

1:12:24

It can be amended.

1:12:26

I just wonder if, like, I think they're going to be in the kind of position where we get

1:12:31

to February, whatever the trade deadline is.

1:12:34

I think they're going to be right around the sweet spot where the new lottery system

1:12:38

really helps them.

1:12:39

And like, I, I just wonder if that team that was 23 and 7 or whatever it was, if that

1:12:47

team is just gone, I would bet on it being largely gone because of health and age.

1:12:53

And if there is any move, like if it's even worth it to bundle up a bunch of picks to

1:12:59

salvage whatever the remains of that team is, if I could wait until the off season when

1:13:05

I have a lot more options to either use those same picks in a different way, use cap

1:13:09

space, whatever.

1:13:10

Like, I don't necessarily think it's like a lock that they make a big trade at the trade

1:13:15

deadline because I just think they're going to look at the standings and be like, oh,

1:13:18

wow, we're in the 321, potentially of the 321 lottery system.

1:13:22

Like, we could use a building block or two for sure.

1:13:28

I'm with you, but what I would tell you is having watched this team closely over the last

1:13:36

year, that that draft take, if it lands in the right spot, that's great.

1:13:41

This team, if we're being real, Zach is badly in need of hitting the button though.

1:13:48

They're just, they're not good enough.

1:13:51

And to your point about, all right, we'll throw all these contracts in and we'll make one

1:13:55

big move, potentially the deadline, sign somebody in the summer.

1:13:58

They're still not good enough.

1:14:00

They are trying to do right by step, but step 38 years old with a knee problem.

1:14:05

I mean, I'll give you some anecdotal evidence here.

1:14:09

We're in a Y.

1:14:10

We're in that preseason game.

1:14:11

They're playing the clippers.

1:14:12

He comes to the bench for the first time in the first quarter.

1:14:14

Immediately, he puts the heating pad on the knee.

1:14:17

And I went, oh, no, because this is going to be like that all year long.

1:14:22

He knows that the training staff knows that they still want to be competitive around staff.

1:14:29

Joe Lakeb is the owner.

1:14:30

He wants to win, et cetera, et cetera.

1:14:33

This team, though, as they're constructed, isn't close enough if they bring in that one

1:14:40

mythical major piece to get back to where they've been.

1:14:44

So if it were me and I were Mike Dunleven, I'm watching all this unfold.

1:14:49

I'm saying, all right, we want to keep stuff.

1:14:51

He fills the building.

1:14:52

He is the franchise.

1:14:54

But every single other person, let's talk.

1:14:58

I mean, they really like Yaxl and they really like pods.

1:15:01

I wouldn't stop it.

1:15:03

Either one of those guys from moving out if you got the right pieces back in place.

1:15:07

But that's the issue that they face and that they're not bad enough to tank all the way

1:15:15

out of it.

1:15:16

And they're not good enough to get back to the level that we're used to seeing.

1:15:20

And my point to you, as we sit here before the season is, of course, getting that top

1:15:25

to one or two or three pick, that'd be fantastic.

1:15:29

That piece isn't going to put them into a better place either.

1:15:33

So they are really just stuck in kind of no-man's land.

1:15:38

And the reality is that I don't see a move that's going to take them out of the situation

1:15:44

that they're in.

1:15:45

So if you're done leaving, I guess the best play is you keep the young guys with stuff

1:15:51

and you get everybody else out and you see what happens a year from now and keep building

1:15:58

from that point.

1:15:59

I mean, that pick, it made up with them in a better position to win today, next year,

1:16:04

whatever.

1:16:05

But it definitely puts them in a better position, both step, which is what they really

1:16:09

should be aiming at.

1:16:10

Now, if they are still aiming at, and they should be to trying to thread the needle of

1:16:14

doing right by step, I just keep thinking of, well, who's even the guy?

1:16:19

Who are they trading for?

1:16:21

And there are some possibilities.

1:16:22

The season will go haywire in a bunch of different places.

1:16:24

There's also the possibility of like, hey, maybe there's a guy on an expiring whose trade

1:16:30

value declines to the point that it doesn't cost us very much.

1:16:33

It costs us one protected future first round pick.

1:16:35

Or so like that.

1:16:36

What if the nets decide Michael Porter Jr. is just not a part of our future?

1:16:41

Anthony Davis, I've never really sensed the warriors are like super into that idea, but

1:16:45

like that's a name.

1:16:48

Like, there will be a guy like that who's like, yes, guy helps us and it's the cost isn't

1:16:53

that much.

1:16:54

Like the guy like, I just don't know who the guy that I'm bundling a lot of stuff to

1:16:59

go get because it's got to be somebody younger on the like young prime age timetable.

1:17:05

Like, Kawai's gone.

1:17:06

He's on the Raptors now.

1:17:07

Paul George, all these old guys that they've snipped around.

1:17:09

It can't be somebody like that.

1:17:11

Mark and ins locked up.

1:17:12

Like, someone through Devon Booker to me is a hypothetical.

1:17:16

I just don't see Phoenix even entertaining anything with that right now.

1:17:19

And the contract is huge.

1:17:20

And I don't, I think Phoenix wants to see what they have.

1:17:22

There's nothing going on to be clear in any point with Devon Booker.

1:17:27

I would look at a guy like if Orlando has a bad season, do I get a, do I try and get

1:17:33

a Mulligan on the Franz Wagner pick?

1:17:35

Like that's a guy I might throw a bunch of draft fix that because it's somebody of that

1:17:40

ilk or timetable or age or whatever.

1:17:42

But I just don't know like who, if you, if you are dreaming of this big superstar trade,

1:17:47

I just don't know really who it is.

1:17:49

And by the way, as I'm saying this, that's fine.

1:17:52

Like I think their best move might just be kind of ride it out into the off season,

1:17:55

keep all the picks, keep all the assets and see what comes in May and June.

1:17:59

Because I think this season is kind of D.O.A. to be honest with you.

1:18:02

I couldn't agree with you more on that point.

1:18:05

And I would tell you that I think the problem the warriors are going to face is, yeah, they

1:18:10

want to do right by step and if he's healthy, it changes the dynamic certainly.

1:18:15

But there's not that guy.

1:18:18

You want to throw every pick you got or a lot of picks.

1:18:21

It's kind of traded.

1:18:22

It's over.

1:18:23

Yeah, I mean, friends Wagner, Franz Wagner is not going to get you from wherever the hell

1:18:30

the warriors are to where we're used to seeing.

1:18:33

And then they'll say, all right, we just want to have a chance in the post season.

1:18:37

Franz Wagner is not the type of difference maker on that kind of deal that's going to take

1:18:43

you to a completely different place.

1:18:47

The fan base is more pissed off than I can ever remember it being because they were so

1:18:54

mad that there weren't a lot of moves in the off season.

1:18:59

And they're watching all these other teams improve and the warriors are sitting there going,

1:19:07

we don't want to give up the picks.

1:19:09

We don't see that kind of guy that we're trying to describe here being available.

1:19:17

And that's where I think there are going to be big questions as the season keeps going

1:19:21

because I think this is a team that's going to hover somewhere around 500, maybe a few

1:19:26

games below most of the year waiting for Jimmy and whatever happens.

1:19:30

But Zach, I cannot stress this enough.

1:19:33

Again, it's started season.

1:19:35

If I were the warriors, I would ride this thing out just like they're trying to do right

1:19:39

now because if you put all your picks into whether it's Wagner or Anthony Davis or

1:19:47

Phil in the blank, I've heard Devin Booker too, just a name getting tossed out.

1:19:53

Put Devin Booker on this team.

1:19:54

Give up all your picks.

1:19:56

How much better are you?

1:19:57

You're a better team, but you're not closer to some kind of extra bonus title at the

1:20:03

end of the step run.

1:20:05

So I would do exactly what they did in the summer and I would just close my ears to every

1:20:12

criticism that's out there.

1:20:14

And the fan base doesn't want to hear that.

1:20:16

They want to see action.

1:20:17

They want to see Steph have one more legit run.

1:20:21

I don't see it.

1:20:22

I think that the warriors are entering into that phase of what we saw with Kobe at the

1:20:29

end of the Lakers time.

1:20:30

Now, they're not that bad.

1:20:33

It's, hey, Steph out there.

1:20:35

Okay, this is a good night.

1:20:36

Something truly pretty cool could still happen, but this team is used to winning titles

1:20:41

and competing at the top and the way they're structured and away the money is and what

1:20:48

other assets are happening as Steph gets closer to retirement.

1:20:52

I think the best path is to be as cautious as possible right now.

1:20:57

Well, and also just like whether it's Booker or anybody else that has a huge salary for

1:21:01

the next season, you're taking away all or a lot of the cap space like the dream would

1:21:06

be add a player and still be able to add more players.

1:21:09

And that's, I don't know, man, I just, I wish I had more reasons to be optimistic about

1:21:13

this team, but I wanted to take a look at them because I like Landaborg a lot.

1:21:17

And I think the pods deal should get done.

1:21:19

And they're just always interesting as long as Steph is flying around.

1:21:22

There will be nights.

1:21:24

There will be nights like that Clippers playing game where the old lion roars again, where

1:21:28

it's like Steph Dremon handoff, Steph Dremon, wink, wink, flip the screen.

1:21:33

And like it looks like it's 2015 again.

1:21:36

There will be nights.

1:21:37

There will be moments like that.

1:21:38

But it's there becoming increasingly surrounded by the the creep of mortality.

1:21:44

Nick Fidel, I'm sorry your Cubs didn't make it out of the first round, but they did

1:21:49

better than the Mets this year.

1:21:50

It's always great to see you.

1:21:52

Thanks for PCA, my man.

1:21:55

It is always good to be with you.

1:21:57

And I had a done this and we're both saying it, but it's true.

1:22:00

And I was reminded of it being out there for a while over the last week.

1:22:05

If you're lucky enough to see it, still get a chance to go watch Steph and he is healthy,

1:22:10

go take it because he still is that great.

1:22:14

And he can still make the crowd go, whoa, you know, because you just not used to seeing

1:22:19

somebody like him.

1:22:21

Sadly, I don't know if his knee is going to be able to hold up.

1:22:25

He we're close to where he would want it to be.

1:22:28

But when he is out there, wherever you're at, if you're lucky enough to go get a ticket

1:22:33

and see him, you need to because it's, it's still a pretty cool and exciting atmosphere

1:22:40

every time he lines up to go play.

1:22:43

No, no, no joke, and man, on point Nick Fidel for the athletic.

1:22:47

I'll see you soon, bud.

1:22:48

You got it.

1:22:52

Not cool.

1:22:53

It is Ty Reese, how a Burton last seen on a basketball court a long time ago until

1:23:00

last night in Ames, I where we went to college.

1:23:02

You made your return from Achilles injury surgery.

1:23:06

How are you doing?

1:23:07

How did it feel to be back with your team in a true, true on court fashion?

1:23:11

Yeah, it was a first preciation.

1:23:15

It was, it was excited.

1:23:16

It was a lot of fun for me to get back on the floor.

1:23:19

You know, I think a preseason can kind of be like the dog days a little bit where people

1:23:23

like, as like, as my career went on, I'm like the preseason, like, can we just get this done

1:23:28

with.

1:23:29

But then I was excited to be back in Iowa State.

1:23:31

I think that was the most important thing to be back at, you know, where I went to college

1:23:35

and very special place to me.

1:23:37

And then just to be back on the floor was a lot of fun.

1:23:39

I feel like I, you know, you don't get that experience with practice or pick up, like,

1:23:45

that's just completely different.

1:23:46

And I had a lot of fun with it.

1:23:48

And I feel like I learned a lot and it's good to get film on tape, you know, no matter

1:23:51

what good, bad, and, you know, part of the journey of learning.

1:23:56

Is your post scheme, like physical routine, treatment routine, is it different now than

1:24:03

it was before the injury?

1:24:05

Like, what do you have to do if anything that's new?

1:24:07

Yeah.

1:24:08

I wouldn't say it's anything completely like super different.

1:24:12

I've always been, I mean, I had a lot of good vets, hair, some barns and, uh, I mean,

1:24:17

I, you know, Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph and guys like that and who in buddy healed

1:24:22

who, you know, plays every game, right?

1:24:24

Like these guys who take care of themselves.

1:24:26

So I've always, every time I'm looking here, I've been pretty good about that of getting

1:24:30

massages, getting the tubs, doing all those things.

1:24:33

So post game is pretty much the same pre game.

1:24:35

There's a little more that goes into my lift and my movement session of getting my body

1:24:40

ready than, uh, there typically has been, but for the most part, it's pretty much the

1:24:44

same thing.

1:24:45

How do you feel?

1:24:46

I feel like I feel like I'm going to be a little daft through a real NBA game.

1:24:48

Yeah, honestly good.

1:24:49

Um, you know, I haven't really dealt with any problems, um, really at all with my legs

1:24:55

since having surgery.

1:24:56

Um, you know, a little sornice here and there, but I feel good.

1:25:00

I think yesterday was more about getting my wind.

1:25:02

Like even, even when you play in every year, I played that those first like four minutes

1:25:09

before that immediate time out are always like, oh my god, but yesterday I was like, I am

1:25:15

dying.

1:25:16

And, you know, like we play fast, but obviously Minnesota is playing much faster with the

1:25:20

mellow at point.

1:25:21

So, um, you know, it was just the game was going fast.

1:25:24

I think for everybody because it wasn't just me second win.

1:25:26

So I mean, I feel better than there were more, more people tired than just me.

1:25:29

All right.

1:25:30

So fatigue is one thing.

1:25:31

I watched the game, have to game.

1:25:34

Uh, I thought you looked like Tyree's however, and I thought you were changing directions

1:25:38

pretty well, moving off the ball, like the ball was popping, but like for you, what

1:25:42

did you feel like is a in terms of basketball?

1:25:46

What, what are you for this behind prime peak Tyree's Haloper?

1:25:50

Like is there a movement?

1:25:51

Is there a skill?

1:25:52

Is there a part of your game?

1:25:53

It's like, I, that felt good.

1:25:54

This, this I got a ways to go.

1:25:56

Yeah, I would just say, re adjusting to the speed of the game of live action stuff.

1:26:02

Um, I talked to Jason for a good while last night about it.

1:26:06

Like he said when he came back, it's like the game is going fast and there's really no

1:26:11

way to replicate it.

1:26:12

Uh, like pick up and practice.

1:26:15

He doesn't really do it for us.

1:26:17

And for me, I'm, I'm a, I don't think I'm a pretty fast processor, you know, like and

1:26:22

early in my career, I used to say sometimes like, man, the game is, is moving fast.

1:26:27

You know, rookie say that like the game's moving fast and wants to slow down everything

1:26:31

opened up for me.

1:26:32

Well, obviously the game has slowed down for me for a long time and yesterday was the

1:26:36

first time in a while that I felt like who I'm moving kind of fast.

1:26:40

So that's going to be the biggest adjustments for me just having to like slow back down,

1:26:44

especially with zoo too.

1:26:45

Like, I think the, from the most like tactical standpoint to talk about it, like zoo is by

1:26:50

far the best screener I've ever played with.

1:26:52

He is a guy who hits people.

1:26:55

He enjoys it.

1:26:56

He is great at it.

1:26:58

That's why he's had such a great career.

1:26:59

And I'm used to playing with obviously Miles, who's a guy who's like a early out guy,

1:27:04

a popper and with zoo because I was playing so fast, I kept coming off so fast.

1:27:10

I was so open, but looking down at my feet and seeing I'm one step in front of the

1:27:14

three point line.

1:27:15

And it's like, do I just shoot five horrible long two or do I try to just play the right

1:27:23

way for now, make the safe reads and do all those things.

1:27:26

And as time goes on and I start to slow down, get my feet right where I can just shoot the

1:27:30

three after picking roll or work to get downhill.

1:27:32

I had a couple of times I came off and picked up all up and like that step in front of

1:27:37

the three point line.

1:27:38

That's going to be the biggest adjustment.

1:27:40

And I feel like it'll come with time.

1:27:41

Now that I know that, I'm seeing film for it.

1:27:43

Like it's some all up and powerful.

1:27:45

Um, so I've been covering the NBA full time for 15, 16 years now.

1:27:51

Your playoff run two years ago, one of the coolest things I've ever been around.

1:27:55

I was at the next game one.

1:27:57

I was at all these circumference finals games, all the finals games, all the shots, all

1:28:01

that.

1:28:02

So this is my long-winded way of saying like, is game seven something you could ever

1:28:06

get over?

1:28:07

Do you just not think about it?

1:28:09

Like what is the process of obviously there's the immediate trauma.

1:28:14

There's the halftime locker room.

1:28:15

There's the tears afterwards around TV and all that.

1:28:17

But like a year and change later, like is there a point where is there something you

1:28:21

have to do to like close the book on that or is it just not something that can work like

1:28:26

that?

1:28:27

Yeah, I don't think it's something like we're like, I think the book will forever be open.

1:28:31

Um, you know, and I feel like it's not just me, but like anybody who goes to like a traumatic

1:28:35

life experience, it's really hard to move on from.

1:28:39

And for me, I've said many times like, I was at the peak of the game, you know, feeling

1:28:43

the best I've ever felt.

1:28:44

Um, and it has from a football, from a basketball standpoint, that whole run, but let alone just

1:28:50

that night where I was, I was feeling so good.

1:28:53

And so, um, it's something that would be hard for me to get over.

1:28:56

And we know what I talked to other guys who have lost in the finals.

1:29:01

Obviously different experiences.

1:29:03

Um, but I've talked to guys who have like Jason lost the finals, went on to win the finals

1:29:08

and he's like, I think a lot about that golden state series and some I think about a lot

1:29:12

because I wish I had that one too.

1:29:14

And he's like, I never stopped thinking about it.

1:29:17

And I'm the same boat.

1:29:18

I just got hurt, you know what I mean?

1:29:20

But I mean, that same boat where at the end day, to me, obviously, it's seven games

1:29:23

series and I got hurt in that game and that's the game.

1:29:25

They want to talk about what we could have won.

1:29:27

But like, I think a lot more about game four.

1:29:29

Oh, we're going to talk about that.

1:29:31

Don't worry.

1:29:32

We're winning going into the four.

1:29:34

Like that's been the hardest game for me.

1:29:36

So like, I haven't really rewatched much of the finals to be honest.

1:29:39

Like what's been put in front of you?

1:29:41

What I said on social media or, you know, if it's on TV or whatever, or you're watching

1:29:46

the run, whatever.

1:29:47

But the game four game is some I think about a lot more than in games.

1:29:52

So do you let yourself believe or maybe do you just fly out believes we were going to

1:30:00

win the championship?

1:30:01

Yeah, of course, of course, I believe that.

1:30:04

I'm a competitor.

1:30:06

I wouldn't want to play any of those games.

1:30:08

I didn't believe we were going to win and think some that everybody saw with our group

1:30:11

is, I don't think anybody could watch our playoff run and say, Hey, these guys conceded

1:30:16

at any point in any game they just believe that they were going to lose.

1:30:19

So let alone that game.

1:30:20

Like, we're winning a half.

1:30:22

We played a good brand.

1:30:23

We played a good, a good game from top to bottom as a group.

1:30:26

We just, I feel like about my out there things changed.

1:30:28

So yeah, I mean, of course, I view it that way and I'll always view it that way.

1:30:32

Nothing anybody could say any social media backlash in these comments.

1:30:37

Nothing could change my mind.

1:30:38

I don't care.

1:30:39

But we got to move on.

1:30:40

Like, I'm going to have more years of my career to, you know, hopefully chase that, chase

1:30:45

that dream again.

1:30:46

So, you know, we'll get that opportunity again.

1:30:48

I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason.

1:30:53

You know, I am more than, more than ready for what's the coming next.

1:30:59

It's not funny.

1:31:00

It is, it's funny you mentioned game four because when, when we got word, you're going to do

1:31:04

the pot.

1:31:05

I was like, I should, you know, looking back at the playoff run.

1:31:08

I mean, I'm at the, I'm at the choke sign game.

1:31:10

I'm at a bunch of the games.

1:31:12

It's like, I want to go back and rewatch the fourth quarter or the second half of game

1:31:17

four because I remember being at the game.

1:31:20

And in my, it's one of the reasons I rewatch it is like in my head, you guys were ahead

1:31:24

by more in the fourth quarter in game four than you actually were, but it felt viscerally.

1:31:29

I mean, I remember vividly sitting there thinking, they're fucking going to do it.

1:31:33

Like, they're going to be up three one and this is going to be a wrap.

1:31:36

And you're up by four, I think, with like two and a half, two, 50 and change.

1:31:41

And then just like a bunch of stuff happens.

1:31:43

It's really crazy that happens other than a couple off ball fouls.

1:31:45

But with that was the game.

1:31:48

It's funny, you zero and on because that's the one I zero and on is like that's one

1:31:52

the series to me.

1:31:53

What do you, what, what, what sticks in your crawl about that game?

1:31:56

I don't know if you have a specific thing you remember.

1:31:58

If there's a shot, you remember you have, you have a step back three over a jet that

1:32:02

doesn't catch rim.

1:32:03

I lay in the game, but you have a lot of other great plays obviously.

1:32:05

Is there, what do you remember from that?

1:32:07

Yeah, lay in that game.

1:32:09

There was a lot of a lot of one on one possession between me and chat.

1:32:12

I think like two or three where I shot a three, some at the rim, something else happened.

1:32:18

It was obviously an elite defender.

1:32:21

But I mean, you say it all the time.

1:32:23

You have a basketball player, but like you wish you could get those back, you know,

1:32:27

to make a different decision, make a better play.

1:32:29

I feel like I was at like I said, the peak of my game in terms of closing games.

1:32:34

And so like you said, to be a four point game for two minutes, like that's closing time.

1:32:39

It's time to win.

1:32:40

And you know, I feel like I had, I could have done a much better job of closing that game.

1:32:45

And it's something that really bothers me because it's like if you go up three one,

1:32:50

the pressure of game five changes and, you know, obviously game five is where I

1:32:54

re aggravate the calf injury.

1:32:56

And so everything kind of changed from there.

1:32:59

And you know, we were at a top.

1:33:01

We're at a point where that series was about who could win two games in a row first.

1:33:07

You know, that's kind of kind of felt like it's somebody's got to win two in a row.

1:33:10

Because if not, we're going to win because we won't game one.

1:33:12

So somebody got to win two in a row.

1:33:14

So game four, you know, lose that game and then lose game five.

1:33:18

That had been the first time we had launched two games in a row.

1:33:20

I think since it's like January, we hadn't done that a very long time.

1:33:24

You know, so that's the game I wish that I could get back, you know, more than anything.

1:33:29

I know we're supposed to move on, but that's the one I wish I could get back.

1:33:33

Wait, another thing I had forgotten was how physical the matchup with Dort was.

1:33:39

And I had even forgotten someone was like, you got to rewatch the free throw and Dort like throws them on the ground.

1:33:44

Like, I don't remember that.

1:33:45

It was like, oh, yeah, he really like threw your ass on the ground during a free throw.

1:33:49

Like you're the Benedict Mathros shooting a free throw and all of a sudden you're on the floor.

1:33:53

I think he'd be, he was really like every step off the ball.

1:33:57

There's like contact.

1:33:58

He made it hard for you to get the ball.

1:34:00

I mean, that is that took must have taken something out of you.

1:34:03

Yeah, for sure.

1:34:04

I mean, they have so many, they have so many great ball defenders.

1:34:08

I feel like, I mean, I was seeing it now at Kaisen Males.

1:34:11

He shouldn't be getting paid here soon.

1:34:13

Another elite, elite on ball defender.

1:34:16

Karusos, a guy in battle many, many years, obviously, with him being in Chicago.

1:34:19

So I feel like what they, what they had was the capability to throw multiple defenders at a lot of us,

1:34:25

especially me and I think Dagnoles, obviously a great basketball mind knowing that he can't allow me to just bring the ball up freely,

1:34:31

especially at that time with the way I was playing.

1:34:33

So I feel like they did a good job, you know, top to bottom defensively.

1:34:37

I feel like we were doing a great job defensively, too.

1:34:39

Obviously, Shay is who he is and Doug had a great series as well.

1:34:43

So, you know, I feel like going into that series, people didn't expect much,

1:34:47

but I think that when you look back on it, you'll, especially as time goes on,

1:34:53

I think people realize how elite and how special a basketball is being played at the time from both sides.

1:34:58

And that's made a form.

1:35:01

There's also a shape which off late in that game on a baseline jumper that that's the one that pace or fans

1:35:07

will never be able to get over.

1:35:09

That's the one that when we do the POE meeting this year, and they talk about the push off.

1:35:14

I'm waiting for that clip to be shown so we can ask the question.

1:35:18

Clip never gets shown.

1:35:19

No, I was going to say I had my R version of that meeting with Amazon Prime,

1:35:24

because I do some stuff for MSOs there and they didn't show that one,

1:35:27

but I think it could have been in the montage.

1:35:31

Let's try enough of this.

1:35:33

This is a very similar team in terms of personnel with the one big exception in the middle in that zoo.

1:35:40

Going from a shooting center, a five out center, to a more interior oriented center.

1:35:46

It seems like it would be a big adjustment.

1:35:48

I honestly thought you guys looked really good last night offensively.

1:35:51

Like, is it less of an adjustment than maybe I thought it was going to be?

1:35:54

It's obviously it's different and it's adjustment not just on you, but on Pascal and how he has to space.

1:35:59

But do you, after a real game, how are you feeling about that part of your team?

1:36:04

I think you just hit the nail in the head and we're like,

1:36:07

it's much less of an adjustment than you or any media member

1:36:11

or anybody talking basketball would think.

1:36:13

Obviously it's different because we played like we were so five out.

1:36:17

Like, Miles is a guy who shoots a lot of jumpers,

1:36:20

he gets a lot of top, and he's lit the league in top of the key threes every year that we've played together.

1:36:25

It is different, but I think what we do such a good job of is outside of Miles,

1:36:31

when Miles didn't play, we had Isaiah Jackson,

1:36:34

we had Thomas Bryant, Tony Bradley played a lot in the finals.

1:36:38

It's not even we have never played with a big who's more of an inside threat, right?

1:36:43

And we've done a great job and I think the league is doing a better job

1:36:46

of taking bigs and spacing them to the corner.

1:36:49

So that if it does hit, it's quick to uphill DHO

1:36:52

or that their guys stays in the paint to help they corner cut.

1:36:56

And if you don't hit them, then you have the skit every time.

1:36:58

So I have no worries about it, especially because of Coach Carlisle

1:37:02

and Coach Pierce and the basketball minds that they are.

1:37:06

And Zooz Bayan has been amazing and he's a really smart guy.

1:37:10

I think that's what people take for granted is he's not a dummy.

1:37:15

Like he understands, hey, if I'm at the top of the key,

1:37:18

I shouldn't just be floating here if there's action going over here.

1:37:21

Maybe we go set in the way screen, I go set a pin down,

1:37:24

I get to catch him, we go right in the backside.

1:37:27

Like he has a brain, he's a really smart player.

1:37:29

So I feel like it's going to look great.

1:37:32

And I think what it helps us with two screening, obviously,

1:37:36

that we talked about, which he's a lead at.

1:37:37

And then having another post presence,

1:37:39

obviously past scale is such an elite post player,

1:37:43

but Zooz is as well.

1:37:44

So if you could throw it to Zoo and we're in the middle of figuring out

1:37:49

what our post basins are exactly going to be.

1:37:51

But for me, I tend to be the post entry past the past scale.

1:37:56

I have over the past couple of years,

1:37:58

I feel like I've got really good at being able to pull over in front

1:38:01

if people want to help.

1:38:02

Because I don't think that teams really want to dig or double off of me

1:38:06

and have a rotating defender where I get to make the read

1:38:09

on a rotating defender.

1:38:10

So typically teams will rotate from whoever the other high guard is.

1:38:15

But which could be Drew or double A or Kelly or whoever is in the game,

1:38:20

Jaris, whoever's in the game at that time.

1:38:22

But I feel like we're doing a really good job of figuring out

1:38:24

this is new in a sense.

1:38:26

But we've had to learn how to do it with past scale.

1:38:28

Now we're just doing it with a file.

1:38:30

You know, so I like it because teams are,

1:38:33

I don't think teams are going to be able to cross match as much.

1:38:35

I feel like we've played teams like Boston,

1:38:38

Mizzula and EGMA used to cross match us a lot.

1:38:41

Put Jason on miles, put centers on past scale.

1:38:46

Exactly.

1:38:47

And then just, you know, have them take, you know, long tours with contestants

1:38:50

and kind of putt try to analytic their way out of it.

1:38:53

I think that's going to be really hard to not put your five on Zoom.

1:38:57

So that'll be, that's an adjustment for deep ends as well.

1:39:00

He'll put your ass in the basket if you put a little bit of wing on him.

1:39:04

All right, very important.

1:39:06

The National League Championship Series is going to start soon.

1:39:09

You had a very much publicized falling out with the Milwaukee Brewers,

1:39:13

your childhood team.

1:39:14

Are you back?

1:39:15

Have you reconsidered that you had like you just said I was a Brewers fan.

1:39:19

Now I'm not.

1:39:19

Then you threw out a first pitch for the Cubs.

1:39:22

Are you really made a clean break with the Brewers?

1:39:24

You're just out.

1:39:24

Yeah, I'm out.

1:39:26

I'm out.

1:39:27

Wow.

1:39:27

I hear me halfway in, halfway out.

1:39:29

I'm out.

1:39:29

I'm completely out.

1:39:30

I'm a Cubs fan.

1:39:31

I was in the pot with all the Padres.

1:39:34

The Brewers are, you know,

1:39:36

congrats to them, but no, I'm out.

1:39:38

And the thing is like I got, I get absolutely killed on social media.

1:39:43

And people are telling me I was soft.

1:39:44

I have all these things.

1:39:46

And how I'm holding a grudge against the whole state of Wisconsin.

1:39:51

All this junk.

1:39:53

That is not the whole state of Wisconsin.

1:39:54

The Brewers are an organization.

1:39:57

The books are an organization.

1:39:58

These are organizations.

1:39:59

They don't rep.

1:40:00

They're not the whole state.

1:40:02

So when people want to, you know, group all those together,

1:40:05

it makes me laugh.

1:40:05

You know, you can't reply to everybody,

1:40:07

but it is what it is.

1:40:09

It's because they canceled the first pitch on you, right?

1:40:11

Didn't they, they, the Brewers proactively were like,

1:40:14

this guy's become public enemy number one in Milwaukee,

1:40:17

because of all the buckstuff, the game ball,

1:40:19

the playoff series,

1:40:20

Dame time.

1:40:21

I've got to say, man, like the Dame one in Vegas,

1:40:25

was it in Vegas?

1:40:25

I think it was in Vegas.

1:40:26

It was a tournament game.

1:40:27

When you threw the Dame time watch logo at him,

1:40:30

I was like, all right, he's really not messing around.

1:40:32

He's going for all the smoke.

1:40:34

Did you regret that?

1:40:35

Or was that like, no, in the moment, did you like,

1:40:37

did you think like, oh, wow, I'm actually doing it?

1:40:39

Yeah.

1:40:40

Do I regret it?

1:40:41

No, because it was obviously a lot of fun for our organization.

1:40:46

And the run we went on in that in season tournament

1:40:48

was a lot of fun.

1:40:49

And it just added to it.

1:40:50

So it was fun.

1:40:53

I think what I do regret more than anything is like,

1:40:56

what me and Dame's relationship has become,

1:40:59

because he was a guy who checked on me a lot,

1:41:01

early in my career,

1:41:02

especially when I got traded.

1:41:04

And we talked a lot.

1:41:05

And I got his permission to like,

1:41:07

be announced as the letter, oh, because that's his thing.

1:41:10

And I, we were supposed to,

1:41:13

I was supposed to talk to him when I was in Portland.

1:41:14

I got shingle, so I didn't have to go into Portland

1:41:16

this year, but yeah, I think I would love to have a conversation.

1:41:21

Because I think it just became more than it ever needed to be.

1:41:25

And I understand his, I missed communication.

1:41:27

And like, and put it on me, right?

1:41:31

I was young in the moment.

1:41:32

I was having fun with it.

1:41:34

It was probably a little much.

1:41:35

And you know, whatever happened from there happened.

1:41:38

But he's a guy who I have looked up to,

1:41:40

who, you know,

1:41:42

majority of my life,

1:41:42

and part of the reason I were zero is,

1:41:44

is Dame and Lillard.

1:41:45

So, and obviously we both went through the Achilles thing.

1:41:47

And so, you know, it's a guy that I would love to,

1:41:51

you know, at least we weren't,

1:41:53

we'd be cordial again,

1:41:54

because obviously there's lots of fun to play out.

1:41:56

But it's love, my answer is your.

1:41:59

Do you feel like you,

1:42:00

you have a real rivalry with the Knicks?

1:42:03

Obviously the Pacers do from Reggie Miller and on.

1:42:07

But like, do you feel like you have a rivalry with the Knicks?

1:42:10

And the reason I ask is because all of us

1:42:13

spent the whole spring, summer,

1:42:15

waxing poetic about the Knicks magical run,

1:42:19

this crazy run they got on,

1:42:21

the best point differential in history of the playoffs.

1:42:23

And every time I would do a podcast about it,

1:42:25

I would get a couple of Pacers fans telling me,

1:42:28

hey, you know who they never be?

1:42:30

The Pacers, just keep that in mind.

1:42:31

Do you take pride in that?

1:42:32

Is that like someone you talked about

1:42:34

or you felt as the Knicks were like doing this?

1:42:36

You're like, hey man, I wish we were there

1:42:38

because we kind of have their number.

1:42:40

Yeah, I mean, I don't want to take away

1:42:42

from the run that was because it was like you're saying.

1:42:45

I was not saying both of you guys,

1:42:47

it was amazing to watch what they were doing,

1:42:49

especially after they lost that Atlanta game.

1:42:51

Everything from then on was like complete dominance.

1:42:55

Like Kudos to them, it was an amazing run.

1:42:58

I hope that we get to play that again.

1:43:02

I hope we get to play that in the playoffs

1:43:03

because I want to play the best teams.

1:43:06

And I think the Knicks of defending champions,

1:43:09

you should, everybody should want to play them.

1:43:11

And I think it was kind of the way that I viewed Boston as well

1:43:14

when obviously they're still a really good team,

1:43:16

but when they had the team that just won the championship

1:43:17

and beat us in the Eastern Conference Finals,

1:43:19

I was jealous of the Knicks

1:43:22

that they got to play the Celtics and they beat them.

1:43:25

I was jealous.

1:43:26

I was like, I wanted that to be,

1:43:27

I wanted to play them because I want to play the best teams.

1:43:30

So that's kind of the way I'm looking at it.

1:43:31

Of course, obviously I want to get to the playoffs

1:43:33

and do all these things.

1:43:34

I want to play the Knicks.

1:43:35

Of course, because they're a really good basketball team.

1:43:37

And I think a rivalry with the Knicks,

1:43:40

I guess the Pacers Knicks is always going to be a thing.

1:43:42

And I think rivalries are all for like

1:43:45

storyline purposes and stuff.

1:43:46

And but do I feel like us against the Pacers

1:43:50

or us against the Knicks is good basketball?

1:43:51

And will I pick my team to win the series?

1:43:53

Of course, as they would do themselves.

1:43:55

But I'm looking forward to playing

1:43:58

against all these good teams.

1:43:59

And yeah, I would love to play the Knicks

1:44:00

on the playoffs again.

1:44:01

That calls for good basketball.

1:44:05

If you could pick any WWE superstar past their present

1:44:10

and have their entrance music be your entrance music

1:44:13

when you appear as you have done several times

1:44:15

on WWE programming, who's would it be?

1:44:19

It's a great question.

1:44:20

It depends where I am.

1:44:21

It depends where I am.

1:44:22

I get booed in a lot of places.

1:44:23

You do.

1:44:24

You get booed in a lot of places.

1:44:26

So I really don't know.

1:44:28

I think what was fun at the garden this recent time

1:44:32

is Seth Rollins, I came out to his music

1:44:35

and people were like happy.

1:44:37

And then when they saw me, it was like,

1:44:39

me and people were angry.

1:44:41

You know, so it depends where we are.

1:44:44

I enjoy the booze.

1:44:46

It's fun.

1:44:47

I get booed in a lot of different places.

1:44:49

So that makes it fun for me.

1:44:51

But obviously, we're at Indy.

1:44:53

We were somewhere where I knew I would get cheered.

1:44:55

John Cena has like the most legendary theme song to me.

1:44:57

I had his album when I was a kid.

1:44:59

It's a platinum selling album.

1:45:01

So I would definitely pick John Cena's theme song.

1:45:05

Obviously, you're probably not contractually permitted

1:45:08

to do it, but you and Jalen Bronson appeared on a show

1:45:11

together, at least one of them, maybe twice.

1:45:13

Have you ever, would you ever dream of a,

1:45:18

like I wish I could actually take a bump

1:45:21

in one of these segments?

1:45:22

Like, I would love to have the Undertaker choke slam.

1:45:24

You're like, what's the bump you would want to take?

1:45:26

If you knew you were going to knock it in,

1:45:28

you could take any bump.

1:45:30

What would it be?

1:45:31

Pull me through a table.

1:45:32

Wow.

1:45:34

Pull me through a table.

1:45:35

You know, I think it's fun.

1:45:37

Like I said, it's going to be the guy who gets booed.

1:45:39

And so I would love to go to a place,

1:45:43

get booed, kind of be on top and then end up through a table.

1:45:47

Or if you also cool, do it in Indy,

1:45:49

where I'm actually cheered.

1:45:50

And I get put through a table.

1:45:52

You know, the heel gets booed.

1:45:54

That's good to eat for him.

1:45:55

You know, so that would definitely be number one for me.

1:45:59

And I pitched it to Triple H a million times

1:46:01

and he has not been a fan of it.

1:46:03

So I, you know, there will be a time.

1:46:06

It has to be, you know, we have to win a championship.

1:46:08

Because you know, when you win a championship,

1:46:10

everything in that summer is free game.

1:46:12

Like you won the championship.

1:46:14

Yeah, cat got to, cat got to hit people, right?

1:46:16

Cat got to do a move or something, didn't you?

1:46:18

Yeah, you have a choke slam.

1:46:20

It's free game from there.

1:46:21

So we want a championship.

1:46:23

I think you're counting on me taking a table bump for sure.

1:46:26

All right, last one I'll let you go.

1:46:28

I just, you know, watching you guys play last night,

1:46:30

I was joking on an earlier segment.

1:46:32

Like I almost was trying to send signals

1:46:35

to Pascal through my television.

1:46:37

Like stop playing so hard, man, it's only free season.

1:46:40

That he's flying around out there.

1:46:42

You guys look like pretty ready to start the season.

1:46:46

I'm sure it's like in the head of a fan,

1:46:49

I'm sure people would imagine,

1:46:50

although they're talking about like revenge for 2025,

1:46:53

getting back at it,

1:46:54

that I don't think those conversations happen

1:46:56

like that directly.

1:46:56

But do you sense like a real hunger among the guys

1:47:00

who had to live through last season

1:47:01

and you had to live through it in your own way?

1:47:03

Like let's get to fucking work.

1:47:05

Let's go.

1:47:06

Yeah, for sure.

1:47:08

Take a lot of coming into this year.

1:47:10

In the past, we've had a lot of videos come out

1:47:13

from like our summer stuff.

1:47:15

We've went in the media and talked a lot about,

1:47:18

these are expectations.

1:47:19

These are goals.

1:47:20

This is what we're trying to do.

1:47:21

Yada, yada, yada.

1:47:22

It's not that anymore.

1:47:23

I wouldn't say it's that.

1:47:24

It's, I think we know our expectations as a group.

1:47:27

We all come into the year saying,

1:47:29

we want to win a championship.

1:47:30

That's our goal and we 100% believe it.

1:47:34

And I think it's special now

1:47:37

because we're in the first time

1:47:39

where our fan base fully believes it.

1:47:42

You know, going into two years ago,

1:47:43

I don't think that they necessarily believed

1:47:46

that it was possible.

1:47:47

And that makes it fun.

1:47:49

That makes it fun.

1:47:50

Coming off a year like last year was miserable

1:47:52

for a lot of us.

1:47:53

A lot of us dealt with real injuries.

1:47:55

A lot of us dealt with real life stuff going on.

1:47:58

And it was just not fun for really anybody,

1:48:00

anybody with what's going on.

1:48:01

And so coming here is obviously a fresh restart,

1:48:03

but I think that we, there was still like,

1:48:06

got some younger guys,

1:48:07

but I feel like we've, I have enough guys

1:48:09

who have played some real meaningful basketball games.

1:48:12

So I feel like we have some real leadership

1:48:14

to a point of like, guys understanding like,

1:48:17

let's approach this the correct way.

1:48:19

Let's build our habits.

1:48:20

Let's not pretend like last year didn't happen

1:48:23

and there wasn't a drop off.

1:48:24

Except I feel like if you do that,

1:48:25

you're doing the whole last 12 months of disservice.

1:48:28

Like there was a drop off offensively.

1:48:31

We weren't, you know, playing fast,

1:48:32

we need to defensively.

1:48:33

Obviously we won 19 games.

1:48:35

So there's obviously a big jump off every aspect.

1:48:38

So understanding that and kind of re-correcting it.

1:48:40

And I think that's been the great part about our group

1:48:42

and any team who has success,

1:48:44

you have to be a player led group.

1:48:45

And I feel like we've done that at a really high level.

1:48:48

And but I feel like right now,

1:48:50

like obviously there's conversations

1:48:52

if you ask me one,

1:48:53

we'll change it to all those things.

1:48:54

But I think the cool part was yesterday at halftime.

1:48:57

We were like three minutes left in the game.

1:49:00

It was like, we were like, you know,

1:49:01

we knew we only had three minutes.

1:49:02

We're like, let's try to win these next three minutes.

1:49:04

Like, let's try to make a little game out of it.

1:49:06

We got, we got to halftime.

1:49:07

We were all in there.

1:49:08

We were talking about what we need to work on

1:49:10

what we need to fix.

1:49:11

And I was like, man, we need to slow down to the dawn.

1:49:13

There was like an awkward silence in the air.

1:49:14

And Pesca was like, yo, it's fun to be back.

1:49:17

I was like, it's not the world.

1:49:19

You know, we're all doing it.

1:49:20

We're all kind of like, yeah.

1:49:22

It is fun to be back out here as a group, you know?

1:49:24

And we have a really good group.

1:49:26

So man, I'm really looking forward to the year

1:49:29

that it's going to be.

1:49:29

And last night was a lot of fun.

1:49:31

And like, I feel like we were both playing

1:49:33

really high level basketball.

1:49:35

And Minnesota, especially for early pre-season game.

1:49:38

It was a lot of fun.

1:49:38

So, and I'm just really appreciative

1:49:41

to be with my feet on back on the court.

1:49:43

Tyrese, I think every NBA fan is happy to have you back.

1:49:47

It's been a while.

1:49:48

It was great to see you play last night.

1:49:50

I know it's busy.

1:49:50

Thanks for taking a little time joining us.

1:49:52

And I can't wait to see you guys in person.

1:49:55

But best of luck, stay healthy.

1:49:56
