For all those daddy's who like big pieces or little pieces, we saw a happy birthday
to me so you know what that means.
Hello people, earth and welcome to How Did This Get Made. Today we are talking about
the 1981 Canadian Slasher film Happy Birthday to Me. That answers the whole lot of questions.
I heard Calgary very late in the game and I was like, oh, they're all in Canada.
They're in Canada. That makes so much more sense now.
I am Paul Sheer. That's Jason Manzucas and June Dianne Rayfield. We are going to break
down a movie that even me trying to explain it offers a bigger question, which is this.
I was going to say, what do you need to know about Happy Birthday to me? Well, it revolves
around a high school senior. Is that surprising to you? I mean, I didn't think that that was
high school. I had a lot of questions. I only thought it because it said academy.
They also were at a fall. Yeah, it seems like it's a boarding school except they all go to homes.
Yeah. The school appears to me the size of like university of Michigan. It looks like 20,000
people go to this school. That is what was kind of hard wrap my head around.
And also some of the 17 year old boys look like they're 48.
Oh, I mean, the landscaping budget alone for this academy is massive. You know, I mean, this
is just a quaint little school. Well, now that I know it's a Canadian school, it all makes sense.
Yeah, so much for landscaping up there. If you want to know more about it, Virginia, that's a K.A.
Ginny recently returned to her prep school after recovering from a mysterious accident that left her with gaps in her memory.
Now, Ginny is also a part of an elite click of privileged students called the top 10.
I love that. I could talk about the top 10 is my first note. I was like, I love when a click has a name.
Oh, the top 10. Well, I actually want to ask for the top 10 because is the top 10 just based on the father's wealth?
Or are they the top 10 of their class?
It seems like they are the like the top 10. They call themselves the top 10. It's like the top 10 coolest people.
But that also falls apart when one of the coolest people looks like someone doing radar from Mash cosplay.
And he is like working in like a well, they are a group of people who would never hang out together.
They are like it is like Scooby Doo in the gang. It's like one from each archetypal gang.
You know, there's one nerd. There's one jock. There's one smarty.
There's you know, I'm like, this is strange. It's a bizarre group. Anyway, each one of the top 10 begin to be murdered one by one by an unknown killer.
And Virginia starts to piece together the details of her accident and suspects that she might be connected to the killings.
That is the premise. Well, we got so much to bring. I'm so sorry. I just interspersed throughout. Yes, you're right Paul.
That is what the movie is about. Interspersed throughout though. This is a story about a young woman's relationship with her therapist.
Oh my goodness. David.
David or therapist David who is the most significant relationship in this movie and is wandering around the high.
Just not seeing patients outside just walking around, checking out some doc or David as if he's like again the movie treats this like small town rules.
But I'm telling you there's got to be 13,000 kids at least going to this school.
Like when they are watching the soccer game, by the way, the other thing about this movie that really got me was things play out in real time in this movie more than I am accustomed to.
Yes soccer games. I'm watching like three to four minutes of a song. Not a montage of been the clue that this was Canadian is that they didn't play American football and everybody's there cheering everybody.
I was also like astounded by was the could because it felt the first I thought we were in a new England boarding school. Yes. And I was like, oh, well why are they a wire the bullies in the bar elderly people.
And by the way, the bullies are old. The Elks Club. They are they're wearing outfits. They're in a prank. They're in a prank war with the Elks Club. It's so strange.
And and else clubs bad behavior is singing 100 bottles of beer on wall. I mean, I do think those men were insane. But I was like, this is really different. Like you don't see this in high school movies where the town bullies are the elders.
Yeah. But I also like I found it so confusing and now Canada makes sense. Like why in this boarding school where I imagine them rowing. I imagine them. You know, why are they at mountain biking competitions.
The mountain biking competition doesn't make sense for Canada at all. I don't think I don't think anything. It feels like they were like we got to put like rad and BMX is coming out. We need to put a mountain bike. It's just not a school sanctioned as far as I know activity.
Well, it's also like did the school have to like recruit the French guy just to ride the bike because he's like French Canadian. Is that when it's yet is is Etienne French Canadian.
And if that's why I did come from France, when the news report at the end, it's that he was visiting for France. Please. But he's he's the son of like an ambassador or something. That's right. That's right.
So like it's also like these seem like important people. And I want to just be clear. The top 10. Let's just I really just want us to move off of it. The top 10 is like. Think of it like a good old fashioned geek squad. Yes.
And it's one of the first things established is that Virginia's part of the top burn and dead. They're all part of the top 10. Now does it seem like there's 10 of them. I think there's only about seven.
Oh god, that's such a good question. But I don't get killed immediately. We have bird and then you never see all 10 burn it together. ATN. I have their names.
The nerd with the rat. It is the rat part of the top 10. There's how there's still and
Rudy Steve Rudy and look and ATN and Greg Maggie Amelia. These are other news. I'm looking at the cast list.
Well, this isn't I don't want to be racist toward white people. I really really don't. I'm always hyper aware of that. But they all looked the same. Oh, yes. Oh, they
well, it was made the ending. The ending. I would make the ending. No, not that. I mean, we're just going to like let's just talk about it at the very end of the movie.
As we've been conditioned to believe that Virginia is the killer because she has this. She's undergone this like open brain surgery that may be.
Brain surgery, you know, has left her with, you know, like a fragmented memory, etc. By the way, they're doing a lot of skull surgery. They're doing a lot of.
We're not in the brain. We're just a lot of OBS open brain surgery.
Oh, wait. I want to get to the end. But Jason. Yes. Why is she doing OBS? Why? Because I think it was a. Okay. I believe that this is a psychiatric treatment.
This is kind of like they were trying to help her because she went through this traumatic event to rewire her brain on some level.
So it's like an electroshock treatment. Yes, but more glory. Yes. And I think they were trying to set up the fact like I thought, well, I have a lot of
fears of what I thought I shouldn't reveal that yet. But I feel like that was the whole thing is like, okay, you went through trauma.
This is the way we're going to get you out of trauma because she at one point the father says she hasn't moved in months.
She's just sitting here writhing in this bed. He's like, don't worry. That's the brain tissue repairing itself.
And then at the end of the movie, you see that really the only thing that happened was the car took a tumble off of bridge.
Not that that's no great feat, but they're able to be there awake in the car. The mom said, why don't you swim away from me?
And then she swims out and she's out. Like she didn't seem to get brain injuries from that.
I think what she was maybe suppressing was, well, I don't know. I really don't know.
Because what I got my other question is, did David cosine on this open brain?
This seems like this is all David all the time. I was well, that's and the movie is really like this is one of those movies that we do that
seems as though it's giving you the information to kind of try and piece it together. But but you couldn't have any of
it. Like it really takes an exposition dump at the very end of the movie.
The basically the very final scene is a series of reveals that basically explain what's been going on in the whole movie.
In a way that I was like, why?
But also it's it's three reveals after each other. Yeah, that each like, well, just do one. It would be satisfying.
Like it's like she's come out a little bit like like like like I couldn't crack the question.
And this is going to be really, I'm going to really like expose myself here.
Okay. But I want to be brave.
Was that woman at the end?
So by the way, I'm so happy that I am as well because I also wrote who is this?
Yes. Okay. So this is what I started. This is what I started to say.
This is the main killer that we're talking about the very end of the movie.
We are we are seeing like we keep on eliminating suspects almost all the 10 is dead.
And now we reveal this thing and when the face mask and yes, I did say face mask comes off.
And well, getting to all that the reveal was confusing and I had a theory.
My first theory was it was the mom saying.
And I thought that the mom. I thought that. Okay.
So I thought it was the mom.
I thought it was like a psycho situation where she is taking on the mother's
point of view.
Like she's like she's losing herself to the mother's like like possessed by her mother's spirit almost like Norman
a baits you know, in that sense, but that wasn't it.
And then when so that when she comes in and it's double.
So there's a fake out where the killer comes in.
So so the setup of the movie, which you find out at the very end is the characters in the 10
were supposed to be at Virginia's birthday party some six years ago.
Right?
Or something party and no one has attended the party.
Like six years ago, no one went and the mother is her mother is freaking out.
Well, where are they?
Your little friends from the proper Academy.
They're not going.
What?
There's a party in Antomerson's house.
I heard them talking.
Why didn't they invite you?
Mom, they don't even know me.
God damn it.
It's not.
We'll show them if they won't come to our party, we'll go to dance.
The mother is freaking out, which leads to the chaotic and crazy driving in the rain scenes that we've been
seeing chopped up throughout and then the death scene of her mother and all of the rest.
And so then we realize that all of the kids from the 10 who've been going missing all the movie are in
the cottage on Virginia's property where her birthday party from six years ago was set up to
happen that never happened.
The cottage is still set up.
The bodies are all in there.
Virginia finds all the bodies and then Virginia herself walks in a second time.
So you're being told there's twin sisters here, right, which was a giant shock.
And I was like, well, this is not set up at all, but I'm willing to go with him.
I was like, okay, cool.
A second, you're saying Virginia brought those bodies in?
No, no.
We thought that because this is before the face mask reveal when she rips off the mask, right?
Okay, right.
When we think it's just a twin, a lot of tackle twin.
And we're like, well, yes.
So then you're like, well, first you think it's Virginia and you're like, God, it.
Okay, she kills her dad because this is her revenge for her dad not showing up to her birthday
party.
And you're like, okay, that's a filling.
I get this.
I kind of saw it.
I actually did think it was a dad, but I get that.
And then then the Virginia walks over and picks up the head of who Virginia.
And you're like, wait a second.
She has a twin sister because she's calling her sister sister.
And you're like, well, okay, well, now we know that.
Sue.
And by the way, this is, these are the very final moments of the movie.
The movie, like almost two hours have allapsed.
And so their intro is long.
It's an hour and 50 minutes.
So much stuff in these last moments that is that then like, so then you have twin sisters.
Okay, whoa.
Okay.
So now I'm like, okay, so the twin sister's been doing all the murder and the Virginia that
I've been following has just been like going crazy from all these consequences or the
perception that she feels like maybe she's doing all this murder.
Then she immediately rips the mask off of the young girl.
A perfect mask to reveal who is this?
What this is.
And it was like this is a reveal.
I don't know.
When I see it, when I see and I don't remember and from the movie because to June's point,
all these people look the same.
I'm actually looking at a cast picture right now.
I don't even know which one's Ann and I'm looking at pictures.
There are a couple of girls who have like different haircuts and could conceivably be
like a differentiated girl that we've been following, not Ann.
And no, Ann looks like Bernadette and Virginia, you know, like Virginia.
I think Ann, it was the girl was Ann the girl that was swimming in the pool.
No, that was Maggie.
Okay.
I think Ann was the only moment I thought, let's keep an eye on Ann.
Ann might be one to watch is when after that crazy like initial game they played on the bridge,
when Virginia runs into the woods toward her house, the camera kind of lingers on
answer reaction.
And I thought, hmm, and something's going on with Ann.
Okay.
Well, then I forgot all about her really.
Yeah.
Because they then they take it at a real time walk home.
And again, the movie does kind of low you into a sense of security because it is taking you.
The first murder is way too long.
And nobody is finding any bodies.
Nobody's finding any blood.
That like they show you.
And so that's like, it's really weird too.
Because you're like, oh, wait, is she imagining these murders and all this blood?
Because she covered in blood or the bedroom would be covered in blood.
The guy in the bell tower who is like, let's go cut down the bell.
Rudy, like, oh, she Rudy is dead.
But then Rudy isn't dead.
And they're like, oh, she imagining all these killings because Rudy died.
Well, Rudy dies later later.
How?
Not the Shishka Bob.
He's no, that's the other guy that's Steve.
Yeah.
Wayne or Steve?
I think that's Steve.
You know what?
I have a question about that.
And I'm so sorry.
And I'm sure we'll get to how to Rudy die.
But when you say to someone, hey, I make a great midnight snack.
Do you think that that is Shishka Bob?
Do you think you're making skewers at home?
I have never in high school never expecting Shishka Bob.
I never have ever seen the more disgusting thing than two kids by a fireplace
eating Shishka Bob and then and the way hard and the way that she's doing it to make
out scenario.
And she's like, let me make it spicier for you.
And she's like putting some sort of, like some sort of seasoning on it.
Like she's like putting a cayenne pepper on her.
Invited me back for a midnight snack that she's saying she makes a great midnight snack
in a sultry way.
I'm like, oh, great.
This is sexy.
We're going to hook up and she's like, just hold on.
I'm going to make suvlucky by the way.
I'll be right back.
I'm just going to warm up some gyros.
Finally, Shishka Bob, not an easy thing to make.
You got to be you got to cook some of the vegetables.
You got to get that me go and I got to chop up these peppers and
I mean, and you want that meat to like marinate and in its own juices and stuff.
And is it black bag for a while?
Like it is, it is a process.

Now here's my question when he says my butt's on fire.
Yeah, does he mean like my ass is on fire like that food was just the fire the fireplace was on his backside.
His backside was facing the fireplace.
That's all.
Yeah.
I think it was like how spicy is this food?
No, no, I have a feeling that that was kind of like a fun ad lib of the movie.
Like, you know, we're the kids having fun.
You know, it's like, you know, I Virginia have a bidet in her bathroom.
Oh, Jason.
I wrote this down.
Okay.
Virginia seemingly only has a bidet.
I didn't see it.
I'll just got so lit up because I agree.
I agree.
She only has a bidet only.
I agree.
And I did forensic research looking for a ball.
I read every round at three times because I'm going to bring this up and no one's going to agree with me.
No one's going to know what the fuck I'm talking about.
I'm going to feel insane.
She only has a bidet.
Yes.
It's so funny.
Can you only have a bidet?
Oh, you can't do poops in a bidet.
I didn't know.
But why do you know maybe a thing would flush you flush you clean?
It doesn't know.
Wait a minute.
I don't like even the phrase or the hand gesture that went along with that.
Flush you clean.
Flush you clean.
And you can probably get away with some pee because it's going to go down the same way.
That's what it's used for normally, right?
Oh, no.
What is it?
What is it about?
A bidet is not a urinal.
What is a bidet?
It's just for cleaning.
It's like what washes your asshole?
Oh, I thought you were supposed to, but, but I thought you can sit on it.
So I thought you're supposed to pee in it.
You're supposed to like you're.
And then you're thinking about the toe toe toilet.
A toe toe toilet is.
Can I also don't like the way you're stepping out all those tees toe toe toilet?
The toe toe toilet.
The toe toe toilet are freaking me out right now.
I don't hide you.
There's a male.
There's a scabob with my face on it.
There is, but the toe toe toilet is meant for you to sit.
It's a convenient bidet, but those bidets from the past, it was kind of next to a toilet.
And then you would kind of finish your business and then like run over in a crouched position
and let like a, like a water fountain full of water just kind of clean at your butthole.
I think that's crazy though to have to use a different toilet bowl and then to have to
like shuffle over with your pants down to a bidet.
Well, if you're an Italian older man, I'm not saying I do this, but there, I feel like
people in my family took off all their clothes to poop.
Like if you get sweaty, right?
All the Italian older men in your family.
Look, I feel like that was like a thing.
Like I'm Italian and I have a lot of like bigger men in my family.
And I feel like there was a joke that they always would take off all their clothes to
take a shower.
I have a friend who does that.
Yeah, it's like, it's like I don't want to get my clothes sweaty.
Yeah.
I don't know that some, some people I think do that to just concentrate on what needs
to have.
I'm taking off all my clothes.
Why?
I mean, like if that's the case, if you need to take all your clothes off in order to
take a shit, then you might as well just go straight to the shower.
You're that's what you're saying.
By the way, go home.
Yeah.
Like it's just getting the car going.
You're done.
You're done.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, I am shocked that that's what a day is.
I, I, and I honestly think I might have been using it wrong because I thought you were
supposed to pee in it and then sit on it.
How many times are you using a bidet?
Maybe I'm wrong.
There's actually a couple of straws in LA that have bidets and I thought you could sit
on it and then let it.
Are they bidets?
I'll wash you.
I mean, I'm looking at it and it looks, I mean, it like, I mean, you can certainly pee
in a bidet, but I don't think it's like the equivalent of a urinal.
You know what I mean?
Like, like, we're O, P and P in there.
I mean, that's why they're next to each other.
I mean, for, by the way, I remember, I mean, I'm not going to be like, I'm going to be
in, I mean, we are, aren't we too old to be trying to crack the code on bidets?
I guess, I think we are.
I think we've had the last coat.
Like, shame on.
Whatever it was it was.
I will, I will say this much.
I once went over to a friend's house and he was showing me around.
It's a very interesting house and he goes, check this out.
And he had a urinal in the shower and I said, oh, what's that?
And he said, well, I don't want to pee in the shower, but I do want to pee in the
shower.
So I installed this urinal so I don't have to like pee in the shower.
And I was like, huh, wait, what?
He's so like the idea being like, he doesn't want to pee and have built into the wall.
He built into the wall in the shower.
So it was sort of like, I can pee, like it was on the opposite side.
So we're the, we're the water constant.
I have a question for both.
Sure.
Are you peeing in the shower?
No.
Okay.
So do you have the overwhelming desire to pee in the shower?
Sometimes I have had that desire and sometimes I have peeing in the shower.
Sure.
I've done that.
Yeah.
But I think it's very different for women because it's like, that's a whole situation
to have to pee in a shower.
We don't pee in it.
I'm not peeing in it.
Yeah, I'm not peeing in a bathtub.
I mean, it's very easy.
But I have to say it does require some cognitive dissonance because we all use the same
shower here.
And I know how many men and young boys are peeing in the shower.
And every time I go in there, it's kind of forgetting.
Here's an update.
I don't pee in the shower ever.
I don't think I have ever peed in a shower.
You know what I do before a shower?
I go to the bathroom.
Well, here's the thing.
I agree with you.
Somebody told me that it'll catch you on a wears.
No, I can see where that brush is.
Where that's in there.
It might happen.
But I made fun of because I was like, oh, I never would pee in a shower.
It's disgusting.
It's like, what are you talking about?
That's like one of the best things you could do is a peeing in the shower.
Who said that?
Who said that?
Who said that?
That's one of the best things you've ever done.
I have a list.
You want to know?
OK.
I would love to compare.
Yes, President.
President Midnight, number one.
Baroque, who's saying Obama is the person who told me that.
So there you go.
Ah.
Ah.
Ah.
Ah.
Oh, you shit.
All right.
So she has a bidet.
Oh, my God.
She's probably pissing in that.
So she exclusively has a bidet?
And only has a bidet.
Wow.
I couldn't find a bowl in any shot.
I also then, I for a moment, like froze the frame and go, all right.
If that's the door and there's the sink and we know where the tub is, there is simply
no room for a club because there's a wall here.
Yes.
I thought for sure the bidet is, I was like, the bowl must be across from that bidet.
And then there is a shot that gives you that and it's not there.
Not there.
It's just not there.
Oh, so soft there.
No, this might just be again, chalk, it's up to its Canadian.
Yep.
They may use a bidet and it's totally different.
These fucking backwards ass idiots are busy shitting in the bed.
It won't go down.
It won't go down.
My poop won't go down.
The bidet.
That's not a Canadian.
Yeah, it is.
A little bit, right?
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Do you see Fago?
I don't even know either thing.
Alright.
So can I just like, I knew that we were in for a trip when this movie opens up with this
young girl, ATN, is that ATN, walking out of her dorm?
Well, if that's Bernadette O'Hara.
Oh, that's Bernadette O'Hara.
ATN is the French bully.
What is that?
Oh, sorry.
I have the names.
I'm not going to really invest much time in it.
That's Bernadette O'Hara.
So Bernadette O'Hara.
So Bernadette O'Hara was the killer until a moment ago.
And I thought it was going to be the lead.
I also was confused by because they never mind so much.
But they never mind so much.
But they never mind so much.
Yeah.
I mean, the hairstyles of the time, she's our Drew bearer more.
For all intents and purposes, she's our Drew bearer more.
She's getting killed right out of the gate.
That's why we never see the top 10 together.
The top 10's always coming and going.
Like even when we meet the top 10 in the bar, well, Bernadette's not there.
So they're nine.
And radar, junior isn't there.
So that's eight.
And then the other one enters in two.
So we're starting off the top 10, only seeing seven.
So there's a lot of coming and going of the top 10.
So that opening moment where she's walking and you're like, okay.
What's happening?
Then you hear like almost a whip like and she flips down, eats it face first and you're
like, oh, she's been tripped by the murderer.
But no, she was tripped by this old woman walking a dog, which for her to have tripped over
that dog, the amount of spatial awareness that she would get wrapped up like around.
It's around and around and around her legs.
Like it's in Indiana Jones is like whipped her.
She would have had to have spun in place in order to get that wrapped up in.
And the leash would have to be conservatively like 40 feet long.
And the dog is like a pug.
Like the dog is not a dog that is taking a long.
That's an English bulldog.
Yeah, very cute dog.
Very cute dog.
And then one of her teachers or the school headmaster, head mistress.
Head mistress rather.
Who is also set up to be, I mean, I guess everybody is a red herring and a thing like
this.
But I mean, she's definitely setting herself up to be like, you have had to not go to
that damn bar.
You know, and she lays it all on thick.
I mean, we're like, okay, well, she's going to come back and then she does come back.
And then she disappears.
She comes back to like introduce the class at one point.
Well, I found it very strange that Bernadette after she walks away from the head mistress
and is like very polite to her and says, like, oh, absolutely head mistress.
And I you got it head mistress and then.
And then head mistress has come along Winston and then Bernadette says,
come along Winston, give mommy head.
Yeah.
That was weird.
Super weird.
Well, that's a Canadian.
Yeah, that's a good thing.
Dogs giving grown women.
Yeah.
I mean, in the 80s, a lot of Canadian women were married to their dogs.
It's a practice that's only recently fallen out of favor in the great North of Canada.
And that seemed then immediately devolves into Bernadette being choked in real time for
like six minutes.
For like six minutes, she seems to die.
The killer releases their hold on her and she bounces up, runs away and she doesn't ever
run away.
She only runs like two cars over.
She's in the parking lot.
And the killer seems to be like, well, I'm going to start to be slow in this.
Like everyone's being too slow.
Yeah, the killer decides like, I'm going to just start stalking her by sneaking into
other unlocked cars and look at us.
By the way, here's what I really needed an explanation for because once we get to the
end and do our triple reveal and then we do know, I guess, that it's Anne, the whole
it was been Anne the whole time.
I'm looking back and I'm like, there's a moment with Bernadette where she everybody
recognizes the killer.
And Bernadette is like, oh my gosh, thank God.
It's, thank God you're here and sort of collapses into the killer's arms.
And that killer is roughly like two feet taller than her.
Well, there's a lot.
They do that.
They do this a bunch where sometimes it's not the young actress playing the murderer and
sometimes it is.
There's a lot of focus on the black gloves that seem like big, burly hands are inside.
But I just needed some explanation about the height disparity at the end.
Like that was crazy.
Oh, no.
There's a bunch of crazy stuff.
And how is Anne successfully getting, is she doing all of this wearing her Virginia
mask?
Well, no, no, she gets the Virginia mask later.
I think that she gets the Virginia mask.
Wait, now when they go and break into the taxidermist radar, juniors like layer, he's got
a mask.
Now, is that of Anne?
No, it's Bernadette.
We think that our dead body, so it turns out it's just a mask.
Well, it's a bloody mask, though.
I mean, why did he make it that way?
Well, it's a, they say they say later on.
Like I guess he was just experimenting with what her head would look like cut off.
But they say about Alfred.
That's Alfred and he isn't the killer, but there's something very wrong with him nonetheless.
And how, so you tell me then, how the hell is he getting in the top 10?
This is a guy who carries a lab rat around.
That's why I think it's because of his dad.
Yeah, it must be.
It must just be wealth and so off because it does seem like a very, the scene with her mother
in the birthday party scene is very obsessed with class and wealth and the rich people
being important blah, blah, blah.
Okay.
But again, it seems like at one point, I guess it seems like he's in on it on some level
because he would have had to have made a mask for her, right, for Anne.
Same thing, right?
Yes.
And then he was making death masks based on his work at the funeral.
And that's what I got.
Like he was like, you know what, if I'm here, I'll make a death mask and then I'll be
able to make my own fun things.
That's interesting.
Because they did show a bunch of face masks.
Did they ever, they never found any of the bodies though?
Because the top 10 are all in the cottage behind Virginia's house.
With their little birthday hats on, which I really appreciate.
Really?
Did they put the birthday hats on both like after the killing order just for that night?
You think the birthday just happened?
Or just just in time for her birthday just after?
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think they've just been hanging out there and told the birthday.
Otherwise it would be bad luck.
I would have loved to have seen Anne go shopping for birthday hats.
Like, oh, it's, you know, it's, it's Jenny's birthday and then you like, you didn't
understand.
Oh, she was doing it for the reveal.
One of the things that would have helped me very much is if we saw, like we got to see
Virginia and her mother in those flashback scenes and we get a sense of like, oh, her mother
is the townie trash that was having an affair with the rich, you know, the, the, the,
was she trash?
She looked like a rich woman.
She looked like she married rich then.
Okay.
Is what, is what kind of is then said.
So that Anne and Virginia are half sisters because of this affair, you know, and that
that is, and I would have been tracking this so much more if I'd seen more of the parents.
So more of everyone's parents.
If I had a sense of both, not just the 10 as the 10, but also the 10's parents as important
figures in town.
No, they're like, he really have his herd of Virginia's dad, who's kind of absent and
Virginia's therapist, David, who is very present.
All right.
So Virginia's dad, I wrote down, I wrote down, Mark my words.
He's the killer because that relationship was.
You wrote down Mark my words.
Mark my words.
Mark my words.
Mark my words.
Mark my words.
I did read it, but I did.
I zoomed background.
I did, but I wrote 16 minutes and called it.
And because I didn't like what was going on there and then I started to think, oh, you
know what he did.
He implanted his own brain into her brain and it was basically killing anyone that was
like flirting with her or like helping her.
So it was almost like the dad was like, because he's like, my father wouldn't like that
very much.
She says at one point, I'm like, oh, she is her father.
Well, her father is dead.
I also thought that something happened in that experiment and like some sort of killer's
brain was put in hers during the open brain surgery.
But I, but here's the thing though, I still not quite clear on why, well, first of all,
why didn't those kids go to Jenny's birthday party because they were going to have their
party.
They were at a separate party with.
I know they were, but I guess my question is they also obsessed with class and did they
also frown upon?
Yeah, because you saw that thing is just because you go to this school, doesn't mean you
get in with the cool kids.
Like that was like that guy who was guarding the gate of the house where the birthday party
was.
I also think at that point, because remember, is it Rudy that she's talking to who
doesn't even remember that she went to their school?
That's what I found to be.
She's not even stressing.
She's not even on the 10's radar in the flashbacks.
But if someone you knew, just in your class, okay, even if this school is like, you know,
a giant high school, if someone you knew was in a horrible accident off the bridge and
she's mother died and they were like, wouldn't you remember?
I agree.
It seems, this is again where it feels like the movie is both kind of like twin peaks
in that it is small town, murder in a small town kind of thing.
Oh, the ugliness of like wholesome small town, Canada or whatever.
But it's just the scale is so big.
Like there's too many, theoretically, there's too many people to play by such small rules.
Well, but it's like, it makes no sense because because everybody would know.
My gut was this.
She falls off that bridge and I like, oh, we got to get her into our click because we
want to have the almost dead girl in our click.
That's like a cool, like that's a cool thing for them.
And then she's like, you know what?
I remember when you guys didn't even want to come to my birthday party.
So I'm now going to kill you off one by one.
Like I felt like that was a great, like that's the great thing, which is like, oh, yeah,
you agree.
That made for the wrong reason.
I love that.
I love the idea that she didn't, they didn't come to my party.
So I'm killing them.
What I couldn't then figure out is they didn't come to my birthday party.
So my half sister is killing them.
Because I represented the infidelity of her father that her that ends mother.
That was the thing.
And was like, my mother never let me forget.
I'm like, who is your mother?
And who is that?
Who are we doing?
We don't have the history to understand this is landing.
No.
And again, why do you need to kill all your own friends?
Yeah.
Just to have her.
Just to have her own question on Virginia.
Who doesn't even remember?
By the way, have her get into an accident, get her changed face.
Then she comes back to the school and they don't realize there's a million reasons
here.
But she's just killing her friends.
Well, I guess she's not and is killing her friends.
Yes.
Right.
She's killing her friends.
She's just trying to remember stuff.
Yes.
So Anna is killing her friends.
But do we know why she wants to she wants to frame her, I think, right?
That's what she wants to do.
Well, no, she doesn't want to frame her because she was always going to kill her.
Murder suicide, she says.
Yes.
Okay.
I think there is a world in which Anne was jealous the whole time that all of the top
10 were interested in Virginia.
And I don't really like couldn't really follow because it seemed like sometimes the guys
were with Maggie and fighting over Maggie.
Those same guys seem to be also making out over her Bob's with Virginia.
I couldn't follow all of that.
And I was like, oh, is there because I remember at the dance and was sort of looking over.
Oh, my God.
Yes.
Okay.
She's like, you're living with Steve.
Right.
I was mad because everyone likes Jenny now, right?
That's it.
And she's like, everyone likes Jenny.
And basically, I think that Anne is keeping it real.
Anne's like, guys, we didn't go to a birthday party.
And now you like her.
I'm going to fucking kill you.
And that was it.
Was it also Anne's birthday that day?
It was Anne's party.
It was definitely Anne's party.
So, yes.
So basically Anne's little stage at the end is I don't know.
She only says party there.
It ends party is what she says.
I mean, I feel like the, at the end when Anne is confronting Virginia, she basically
says that, you know, that her mother, again, who we have never met, never let her forget
that her father cheated on her with the town, town, town, towny trash.
She just like her, a fucking heart.
Your father is mistress.
And you're his daughter.
My sister.
Something she never let my father forget.
That's when my mother left us.
She could never forgive me for having you.
So all you have felt, you've ruined our lives.
You should have died that night now.
You never showed up in stone.
You know, like that, Anne seemed to want revenge on Virginia because of Virginia was her father's
love child.
And she was like, you know, essentially.
And, and, and, but again, why take out all of her friends?
I don't understand what the, yes, why does that mean Anne has to kill the 10?
And I guess, I guess, because I think the 10 has switched their tune too much.
Like, I think if it was give, if, if Anne had her way, Anne would be like, what?
This girl's trash.
She should never be in our group.
And, but yet she gets in the group and then all the guys are like, Jenny, Jenny, Jenny,
and she's like, guys, you're fucking losing your mind.
And she's, she is in that.
That would be great.
I definitely didn't see that.
I didn't see it either.
And, and it's like, bummer, but also because it's like, you know how you know that they
don't connect to Jenny to the, the town, what would be, what, like you said earlier,
the town famous story of the car that plunged on the bridge.
They do the bridge game, the cha, the game of chicken on the bridge with Virginia in the
car.
Wouldn't they be like, no, she almost died on this bridge.
But, that was a terrible thing.
And by the way, she doesn't remember any of that that she fell off the bridge.
I would imagine that would be a part of the story.
Oh, yeah, you felt like move her out of this town.
Well, I think they did.
Yeah, no, I think, I think you're right.
They could they move back.
Yeah, they move back.
But if they moved, then why was the cottage?
She wanted to come back.
Yeah.
And no, but like, why was the cottage?
Like, I don't know.
That cottage had a soft market.
Okay.
And they couldn't sell it.
So they came back.
It was sat there.
Yeah, sat there.
And there it was hard to move the, it was hard to move the house because the cottage was
still still set up for a birthday party six years ago.
By the way, also, why was her mom still wet at the birthday table?
I was just realizing this now.
The mom fell in the water and was in the car.
I would argue that some divers went down and got the mom out of the car to bury her.
Yes.
Right.
Like, how come it does?
It seems like the mom was just recently taken out of the water.
The mom is still sopping wet.
Like, the mom wearing the outfit from that night, every, every bit of it.
I was confused as to why when they got out, when, when Virginia gets out of the water,
there's a pool of blood in it.
Yes.
From what?
From what?
From who?
Who has the bloodied?
Who is that down there?
Who?
Yes.
And, and, and so then I had to think, wait a minute, does nobody know that the mother died?
Did, did someone, did Anne go down and get the mom out of the water and put her in the
car somewhere?
Could it?
Put them, but then, but wait, but then Ginny would know, like what, the mom just disappeared
from existence?
This is what I'm asking.
You know what I mean?
Like, this is where the movie is like so weirdly, like, no exposition, then all the exposition,
except certain elements that I would love to know.

Well, the other thing that I couldn't quite parse was the dad when he comes in and sees
that birthday party.
Now I'm just in the dad's point of view right now.
He comes in and sees it.
He's connecting the dots.
I think he knows this was the party that she never had on the night of her mother's death.
She enters the room with a birthday cake with candles on it, but this is Anne, not her.
Well, but from his point of view, he does think it's her.
And he says that he shouldn't have done that.
He shouldn't have kept her away.
And I was like, from where?
From where?
I couldn't lie to her.
He has regrets, but I can't tell if it's the science experiments that he did, if it's
for bringing her back here.
I can't tell if it's for David.
Or if he knows the dad sent so much that all of these bad things happened to him.
What does the dad even do?
Because he's like, at one point, he's like, okay, how many?
Okay, great.
And it looks like he's like going to the site of a crash.
He's like a FEMA officer, something like that.
I don't know.
I mean, and, and, yeah, yeah, I mean, he seemed like I also was, I was also predicting that
the dad was going to kill, that killed the mother.
Right?
That would be a reveal too.
Because he also said, look, I don't want to, I don't want to get too weird about it,
but I didn't like the way he kissed her on the lips like that.
I didn't, I didn't like the way it grows.
I didn't love that, but I'll be honest, guys.
I'm shocked.
To me, the real problematic relationship in this is with the therapist who, they've tenderly
caressing her face, they kiss multiple times.
They have intimacy beyond anybody else in this movie.
Is anybody getting so excited?
Well, invite him to her birthday party.
Well, the other thing about, the other thing that's so weird though is like, her dad has
to leave to go to some sort of like disaster at sea or wherever that was.
Okay.
But then he says on Sunday when it comes back, I'm going to be back and I'm going to take
you out and we're going to dine together just me and you and we're going to dance.
And I'm like, what the fuck is this?
Yes.
What daddy daughter date?
It's a 17 year old girl wants to do this on her birthday.
Yeah.
Really daughter.
Oh, it was romance.
It was.
It was.
It was.
Well, I think that she's got problematic relationships with all the men in her life.
Obviously.
When the guy gets stabbed in the throat, he is making out with Anne in the mask, right?
But then in the morning when Ginny gets up, she's like, what did I do last night?
So is that Ginny?
Like I guess I'm trying to figure out where you'll see why you see the moment you see
that Anne keeps chloroforming her.
Okay.
Okay.
So that you do.
This is just.
Yeah.
This one scene at the end of the movie where we're Anne explains the whole movie.
And that's not all of it.
Not all of it, but you get these moments where she explains that she's been chloroforming
every per, chloroforming Virginia, which is allowing.
A lot of questions about chloroform.
Yeah.
Do you, I understand that once that, once that that cloth goes over your nose and mouth,
that you pass out, but do you not remember the moment of like someone's putting a cloth
over my face?
Such a big question.
Right.
It is.
It is a thing that in movies, we have been led to believe that you put that on and some
immediately passes out.
There's a really funny movie, Mike and Nick and Nick and Alice, where the whole fight scene
is based around trying to chloroform someone and it does not work.
It does not work the way that movies have told you.
It works.
But yes, like you're out.
So I guess she would just be like, I was in the kitchen and then I guess I fell asleep.
Like I mean that, like I think that, like, is where the movie is trying to use her open
brain surgery passed as a way to like kind of obfuscate her, her, basically give you holes
in her memory.
So she's not remembering that she was chloroformed.
She's just.
Yeah.
No, well, that's the thing is you realize at the very, very end that Anne has been driving
Virginia crazy.
You know, so you guys are under the impression because I think I am too that Anne never
wants is like moonlighting as the daughter with like the dad or the therapist.
I guess that was a question.
I was like, do we know that for certain that Anne has had never done that because she
goes, I walked like you.
I talk like you.
I did all that stuff, but she never talks when she's murdering people.
I don't know.
I don't know.
It's a good question.
And for all I know, there might be scenes that are in fact, and under what we call undercover
Anne.
But I don't care.
I don't care.
I'm not tracking it.
Me neither.
Here's where undercover Anne wasn't at the chapel at the temple with Rudy.
Yes, she is.
No, that's not undercover.
No, that's not that's that's Jenny because he.
Sorry, sorry, sorry, yes, because he rooted in that you ran off.
Yes, yes, he cut his own hand.
She ran off because she, and this is where the movie also is tricky.
She also is having brain issues.
She is also blacking out.
So she's blacking out and she's getting chloroformed because she's a member like that.
It's a tricky double edged sword to have.
Well, it's all fun.
And you mentioned this too because there's a lot of confusion.
The movie is not helping us ever because there's so much confusion like you mentioned in
the couplings of the tent.
Oh, I could.
And they already seem big mad at one point.
And I was like, oh, they are constantly swapping partners in a way that I'm like, well, no,
just decide that that Steve is with Maggie.
And this one, and because the fact that everybody is so now, there are now David's pursuing,
Steve is pursuing Virginia and this and that.
And I'm certain that's supposed to help me understand maybe why Anne is feeling away
that Anne is feeling, but I'm not tracking it at all because everybody seems to be bouncing
between partners.
Can I also say this?
And this is a big note I wrote down really disturbed by the lack of grief.
No, wait, I can stir your pad.
It says mark my words mark my words very disturbed, but like I was very.
It seemed like you wanted your own self to mark your words.
Mark my words.
Mark my words Paul.
And I see later later on your pad, it just says mmw.
I write down all my notes just in case I'm ever chloroformed.
So I'll know, I'll know the real truth.
But there is a the lack of mourning for all of these best friends and they are like literally
like and they there's sometimes where there's like, oh, they bet you there's missing.
Like there's no search party.
There's no.
Okay.
So now here's what I'm starting to think because I think Rudy implies this at one point
when he says we're all falling apart.
That statement is not really about how like almost the majority of them is missing and
men haven't been heard from and like I think weeks or days now.
It's more about our interpersonal dynamics are fraught and this is new for us as the
top 10.
And I couldn't in retrospect.
I'm like, wait, was and the whole time undercover and also creating friction like a little mischief
maker.
Sure.
Amongst the couples and so forth.
You mean like like was okay.
So for example, was Virginia who is undercover and taking Steve home to then skewer him
in the head.
Was that an effort to take him?
No, but undercut to someone else.
I don't think undercover and was at that dance because because I think that was Virginia
because and watches her leave.
That's right.
Okay.
So then Virginia and Steve go to the house, make skewers undercover and comes chloroforms
Virginia in the house.
Then bring the skewers and the hummus plate and the charcuterie platter that she's made
happen to by the way, it's great.
And she comes out to say yes.
Fire side.
They do some light petting next thing, you know, skewer to the head.
Steve is dead.
That's that's all the and of that moment.
And so then then they do all this work to show you blood everywhere.
Then undercover and cleans everything up so that when Virginia wakes up the next morning
and is like, what did happen last night?
She's not walking down to this.
I guess that was an easier kill because it was just kind of like a skewer through the
neck.
By the way, that would not kill you.
A skewer through the neck would not kill you at all.
Wouldn't.
No.
Well, okay, interesting Jason.
Well, by the way, the windpipe, it would do a lot of stuff, but it would not like,
it seems pretty bad to me.
Maybe it would be bad, but you would ride the bike.
Right, okay.
Okay.
Well, here's my other question.
I think you did and get the chloroform.
Yeah.
I mean, I thought all the reusable masks, how many Virginia masks did she go for?
I think it's just one, but I think my question too is like, was it easy?
She exactly put off very easy.
She did.
We spent a lot of time with that science class and the science experiment and the frog
and the sort of electric current.
I thought for sure.
Okay.
This is coming back somehow.
We are going to either.
We are going, her mom's going to come back to life via this contract.
This is going to, it's never, I thought for sure that teacher might, we have such investment
in this nerdy teacher.
Right.
We're doing just it at his expense.
I was like, when are we going to get this guy?
We need another beat of this guy.
He can help somebody or get killed or something.
There's no, there's no, no adults are targeted.
So it's only the top 10 are targeted and only to be abducted.
You were saying, everybody is like, hi, it's so weird.
It's like the top 10's falling apart.
On the front page of the newspaper is like six missing.
Like, wait, school would be shut down.
And yet not a single funeral, not a, not a, not a, not a, not a, not a single law enforcement.
There's nobody looking into this.
There's no journalists.
Well, there are, I really couldn't understand this.
It seems like Rudy scarf is berry.
He's berry, Rudy buries a scarf in the flower bed.
And what was that about?
And the skull.
And this is so, so one of the things the movie does is misdirect you into thinking almost
every member of the 10 is the killer.
So Rudy has, what we learned is he's done a prank, which is he buried a scarf and a
skull from the science lab in the flower beds at school for people to find.
And it's a prank.
We also think we are also led to believe that the Albert, the nerdy kid, that he's the killer
because he's making the death masks and he's got the burn of debt.
They're all fucking creepy.
The 10 is the creepiest crew of people.
And the number of the 10 seems like they could be the killer.
Oh, we've got, we haven't even talked about the kid who gets killed by having weights
dropped on his dick.
Oh, gosh.
Is that the same kid who went in and stole her underwear?
No, that's 18.
18.
18 is killed by the scarf.
Never wear a scarf while fixing a motorcycle.
The scarf gets pulled in as a garot.
Is that what you say?
The garot.
But the guy with the weights, the weight dropped on his dick.
Again, another person who does make him drop.
Maybe the only person that I would believe would be in the 10 is, is this guy, the handsome
jock who's doing the weight lifting?
Yeah, I guess.
I mean, he can't even to me.
I'm thinking, now maybe this is Canada.
So a Canada 10, you know what I mean?
Like, to me, like the athletic handsome guy would be in the popular clique.
But yeah, again, if that's what it means to be in the top 10.
Well, in Canada, apparently, Albert in the top 10 as well.
What the fuck?
That's what I'm saying.
Well, that's, yeah, what makes a number of the top 10?
I believe it.
Honestly, the only way you get in there is because of what your father does.
I'm going to regret this, but I suspect there are still people in Canada who listen to
this show right in.
Tell us what the fuck is up with your 10?
Tell us how does the 10 work in Canada?
Because it seems like it's a bunch of cool kids and a couple of fucking dorks.
I mean, the other thing about this too is that I felt like, oh, is this going to be
some sort of like play on 10 little Indians?
The egg of the Christie story, right?
And I was like, oh, that might be interesting, but they're all killed without any cleverness.
Like they're all killed just like stab stab choke choke.
Like it's a, there's no like funny tip of the hat.
And they seem to be anything to the order.
Each kill doesn't reveal a new clue or a new element or it doesn't give us more of the
story.
It's just, oh, I guess that person's dead now.
That one, the other girl who is blonde, short hair blonde, don't know her name.
And the dad is running to the cottage and finds her and she's holding that.
Yeah, the birthday present, but she's dead via what I actually don't know.
What's she dead though?
Well, I don't know, but is she in the top 10 because if so, why wasn't she at the table?
She, I felt like she was alive out there.
And that's what I was looking for.
She's still alive.
She's number 11.
I eat or or I guess maybe Anne didn't get to all 10.
I think that that's what happened.
I think that the birthday came a little bit too soon and she counted the dad as part
of the top 10.
I mean, but also, but all of it alive at the end, but also you know, the end.
The cop who had come the other day, the very polite cop is okay.
I'd like to talk to the girl.
He's like, actually, she's sleeping right now.
I was like, all right, I'll come back a little bit later.
So yeah, yeah, they have like a little moment.
All the guys, all the grown men look the same as well.
Can I tell you who I thought he was?
I thought that that guy was the guy who worked the gate at flashback of Anne's party.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And he was still making sure that he was.
Well, I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm because I'm also realizing that the top 10, Jenny is
at the top 10 too.
So when like, she just her head is down.
That's the reveal.
There's a lot of people at that table like the 10 numbers.
I'm telling you, there's only like seven or so people at the table.
We've never seen all 10 in the same room.
We do.
We can agree that that is a true fact.
And that's why I think that girl, but the girl who's holding the gift in the rain at
the end, she appears to be drugged up.
She doesn't seem like she's normal, but she doesn't seem dead either.
I so I she looks frozen and shocked.
I thought maybe her wrists were.
I didn't know.
I don't know.
Maybe she's dying.
I couldn't figure her out at all.
And maybe she's not quite 10 yet.
Maybe she's like, maybe she's 10 adjacent.
I don't know.
By the way, we haven't talked about the one thing that truly blew my mind.
This is, this was my crush of all crushes.
This is Mary Ingles from Little House in the Prairie as the lead.
And that was a huge show.
No, no one like that was.
No, I was.
No, that was such a big show.
Oh my god.
I was so excited.
I guess I knew about this movie on some level because you know, I was a little perv as
a kid and people are like, she's in her bra in a movie.
I was like, so I feel like I didn't know what this movie was until I saw this.
And I was like, yeah, I finally got to see Mary Ingles.
Funny.
It was so funny to me that she like takes her shirt off, but leaves her bottoms on, but
puts her robe on over her bra.
I was like, this is movie logic.
And she puts on like, she puts on the jazz soundtrack.
She puts on like, fine, fine, I don't know what that sounds.
Now why was that guy was only sneaking in to steal her underwear to put it in his shirt
pocket?
That's what it would, that's what the movie would have you believe.
Yes.
This is a case for a benoit plonk.
I mean, really, I would love to see, we now know how it happened, but I would love to
see him get in here and piece this all together.
Honestly, we need that.
Yeah, because she's going to jail.
She like, Ginny is going to jail, right?
At the end.
She's going to jail for the rest of her life.
Well, that's what it was.
Here's as though, yeah, she's successfully and was David murdered at the end.
David David is, he's covered in blood, you know, out in the woods.
The dad finds him out in the woods on his way to the cottage, like his face covered in
blood.
Wait, wait, who's blood is all over the wall when they in the house?
David, that's David, but I don't know why he comes over.
He must have stumbled over to the cottage.
David is the psychiatrist.
Yes.
Who's like, remember that the final, like, blood?
That's David's blood.
Yeah, because the dad walks in and goes, oh my God.
Is it like, if it's blood, though?
I find it was David, because I think it's the last two.
He must be.
Okay, it must be.
Okay.
Man, oh man, this movie, it just keeps on giving.
Now it takes the dad, it takes the dad like so long to walk from the house to the cottage
and every time he seems to like come through the trees and then it reverses onto the cottage
and he's still so far away from it.
He has like three different, like, I'm finally, I'm here now and then he's still like so
far away from the cottage.
It's awesome.
I again, this movie takes such a long time.
Nothing supernatural.
I thought for sure there might be a supernatural, a switcheroo, a body switch, something.
Obviously, we have opinions about this.
We might be the best movie we've ever done, but there are people out there with a different
opinion, it's now time for second opinions.
Thank you.
All right.
There are 906 total reviews, 70% are five star reviews.
Now I didn't want to read anyone but this one because I thought it was so absolutely insane.
This one was written in 2004 and the author is a person.
This is the author's name, dinosaur events Florida.
That is the author's name, dinosaur events Florida.
This is written in 2004 and all in caps.
Okay.
So today was the big day for happy birthday to me to come out on DVD.
I ran to get it today and rushed home to see the great high definition transfer into my
horror.
The freaking classic orchestrated musical score that made this movie creepy is freaking
gone.
How can they take away the original music score and add in that silly, stupid, keystone
paper, moon nighting chip silly music?
Please anyone out there please contact me.
We must get this movie to its original self.
Looking for retro, SATX dude.
Can you make me a copy from your laser disk?
I will pay you, bud, please contact me.
Did any other fans out there even realize that how they messed up this music and the new
release?
This is one of my all time favorite horror movies.
I've seen this in the theater in 1980, a year before it came out and I have the VHS
at home.
This movie all the time, I love it.
The original music in this movie is classic.
How can they get rid of it?
I just wrote a letter to Columbia TriStar asking him to tell me what the hell were they
thinking?
Clearly, it is a very well written and professionally done.
Ha ha ha.
But I am just so bummed that I can't watch this movie now on DVD through the silly new
music score they added.
It makes no sense whatsoever.
Now I know the original movie scored by heart and for every scene to watch it in
Crystal Clarity and hear the new music, it just sucks.
I am an avid horror fan.
If anyone wants to chat me up about this movie or any others in the past, present or future,
you can email me at I won't say the email address.
And I'm just wondering if any of you realize that the new music score of Happy Birthday to
me is not there.
I need to chat with you.
Okay, please.
Thank you all.
Glenn South Florida.
Ciao.
Five stars.
Happy Birthday to me.
Music score gone.
You know what?
I hope that this impassioned plea yielded somebody sending this guy the copy that he wants.
I will say this.
I did right.
Mark my words.
The score is bad.
The score has a little TV.
I was like, I did have a little element to it.
Scott, try and send to say that Maggie and Rudy were both alive at the end.
So they made it out.
The top 10 is not only a top two.
Okay.
Okay.
Has there been a sequel?
No, I don't think there is.
I don't think there is a sequel.
There's a lot of it.
It's a kind of movie that you might be like, oh, there's eight more of them.
Yeah.
No, this is the thing.
Inadien really explains every one of the problems I had with this.
It's so wild.
I want to read this one story to you because I thought this was really funny.
Glenn Ford.
That is the doc.
That's the psychiatrist, right?
Famous actor basically took this movie because he needed a paycheck and apparently Glenn
Ford and assistant director Charles Brave were involved in a dispute on set in which
Glenn Ford hit the AD.
Producer said he hit our AD who had called a lunch break in the middle of one of Glenn's
scene.
I had to stop the police from arresting him.
It was a mess.
Glenn wouldn't come out of his dressing room until the first AD apologized.
And he said he would never apologize to Glenn.
But I told him that this might be the end of his career as an AD if he didn't.
So he went up and he said he was sorry and Glenn said he was sorry.
They kissed and made up.
As far as I know Glenn never hit anyone else again.
What?
Oh my god.
Crazy.
Crazy story.
From this.
What a nut.
Can you imagine making this movie and getting so worked up about any of these scenes that you
were willing to get physical with someone?
It's truly wild.
I think it was because he was heavily drinking on the set.
One thing that I thought was interesting and I think you guys will like this.
Anne was shocked to be told that she was the killer halfway through filming because
she already had shot her death scene.
Oh, and apparently they decided to change it midway through.
So basically they shot three endings to keep everybody guessing.
But those claims were likely bogus to hide the fact that the script was being rewritten
so late in the day.
So it seems like they didn't like the ending and they changed it and none of it really
makes sense.
So that helps out quite a lot.
If that's the case then that makes much more sense of it than because it is needlessly
confusing and it sounds like that's a result of changes that were made.
Yeah.
The original ending of the script was this.
Virginia was the killer and she was possessed by the spirit of her dead mother while
committing the murders.
That's basically what I wrote in my notes.
I said, did you write my lyrics?
Did you write my words?
Mark my words.
Okay.
Especially when she was like in the graveyard to see her mom and all this talking to her
mom and all this stuff.
I was like, oh, okay.
They zapped a side of her that she is.
It's Norman Bates.
You know, so I changed it primarily because that's the ending of Friday the 13th.
I think that they were like, oh, the original one.
I think that that's where they felt like, oh, it's too much like, oh, it wasn't Jason.
It was Jason's mom.
So I feel like that's why they switched it up.
Anyway, would you recommend this film?
Oh, I have to say I would.
So yeah, I would.
I do think it's very watchable and it does like the birthday hats made me laugh.
There's stuff that's just interesting and so weird, but it's, you know, you, it doesn't,
it doesn't satisfy movie watch, but it went by a lot quicker than I thought.
It's not very satisfying for a movie that's almost two hours long.
I would say this is one for me that I don't think you should feel bad if you want to watch
as much as you want and then bail or watch, but do watch the end.
The end is I think the end is where it really starts getting interesting and weird and the
death scenes are pretty great too because they're so slow and they're so deliberate and
it does feel like everyone is moving.
Like if anyone just moved quickly, they would not have been killed.
It's the kind of movie that we would be over the moon probably if it made a little bit
more sense.
We would have had a blast watching it, but it's confusing enough and it sounds like they
made late in the game decisions that make it confusing that it's just not a, it doesn't
pay off enough to make it like dynamite.
Yeah, fun as hell.
And definitely in this kind of, we're on a good run of like 80s, 80s vibes.
I love it.
I love it.

I love it very much.
I'm like, I'm loving this 80s run of Legend of Billy Jean, layer of the white worm, this
movie, what a great time capsule of 80s movies.
What a blast.
I'm really enjoying it.

I plug L on prime video, which you can still stream the first season of.

That movie is so good.
And if you want to, if you like that episode, there is, I was reminded there's a great action
boys episode, friends of our Ben Rogers, John Gaboris, Ryan Stanger, do a podcast, a movie
podcast.
And they also did a great episode about Legend of Billy Jean.
Oh, I got to listen to that.
Yeah.
That's a plan.
That movie.
Then right now.
Oh, so funny.
That movie, I have been really, it's come up a bunch since we covered it, just in conversations.
I think that is a absolute banger movie.
So if you haven't given it the time or maybe you just listened to the episode, watch that
movie.
